When you have plans to meet another group of people and you have to leave a place and it absolutely hurts to leave then you know you were in for something good. I was only in this place for about an hour and a half and let me say this place rocks. I cannot wait to go back to party down. Sure, it's a drive for me from VB but this is a sure happening spot in Hampton. Good looking people all over the place and a good crowd to be around. They were playing a lot of Top 40 music.
I had me a nice big ol' beer for six bucks. The mug easily could have fit at least two beers. There's a big dance floor, a stage (I suppose where the pianos were) and lots of VIP like seating. The place is huge and can probably fit some 400 people without being too crazy.
It was a cold night but my friends told me about the back patio overlooking water. Looking forward to seeing that view when the weather gets warmer.
I even had dinner, the chicken fried chicken. Given the venue I thought the food was overall pretty good. One thing that stood out about the place was being able to still carry on a conversation with people a few feet away from you without the music blasting in your ear.
I will certainly come back soon. Probably best to have a DD since the drive is 30+ miles for me! But definitely worth the trek on the on the other side of the water.
Let me start off by saying that I really had high expectations for Hampton Roads before I moved here: right on the beach, tons of colleges... figured the night life had to be awesome!
I was wrong. Oh so wrong. First off, VA laws are just ridiculous here: no 2-for-1, no unlimited drinks for $xx, illegal to advertise alcohol specials/happy hour (outside of the bar), no bottle service (beer & wine is OK but not liquor?!) and ALL BARS MUST SERVE FOOD!! VA law actually requires establishments that serve alcohol to take in at least 45% of their revenue from food sales. Insanity.
So now that I've clarified that the nightlife in Hampton Roads, as a general rule, is not very good, let me review Luckies with that in mind.
Comparatively speaking, it's probably the best bar on the peninsula, especially since they got rid of the pianos. Yes, that has changed. They are no longer Luckies Dueling Pianos, they're just Luckies and they're just a regular bar. The inside space is nice, with a small dance floor and booths available for reservation. Off the dance floor, there are smaller tables with stools and a couple more smaller booths. There's also a larger "VIP" area with couches right in the middle of the place that you can reserve as well. Bar is large with an adequate number of bartenders working behind it. But they definitely have a shortage of waitresses, or at least waitresses who are available to take your order: instead they're there for entertainment and eye candy.
Drinks are pricey (well, mixed drinks anyway) and their signature cocktails are generally a disappointment, so I stick to drinks like Bacardi and Coke. There is a $5 cover after 9, or you can pay $7 which also gives you access to NASCAR, PBR and the huge shared deck.
Music definitely leaves a lot to be desired. Personally, I don't want to hear the theme song from the Fresh Prince or anything by R Kelly and I will pass on the Cha Cha Slide.
Get there before 8:00 or its a 5 dollar cover; 5 dollars more than it really deserves. Luckies and Nascar alike are average in everyway but to be fair Ive decided to give them the benefit of 3 stars rather than 2 due their location. The lively crowd is a motley one and at times it appears that all the fat women have in fact devoured the skinny ones and I begin to wonder over my fifth shock top why I return. But then I remember that the crowd is merely entertainment, like the fire pit, mediocre live music, and cornhole games. Check it out with a group for a few good laughs.
Review Source:I have been to over a half dozen dueling piano bars across the country and this certainly deserves a visit. Â The team was great, knew how to get the audience involved. Only down side is the layout. The stage is not setup to be the primary focus and so many people don't feel obligated to partake in the festivities. i.e it's too easy to hide in the back or the complete other side of the bar.
Review Source:I've been here a few times, sometimes the entertainment is great. Other times it is just ok. This is totally dependent upon the pianists that are working that night.
Happy Hour is a great deal and ends at 8 PM.
Food comes from the NASCAR grille and the menu is limited, but has the usually bar foods (burgers, sandwiches, appetizers).
Mixed drinks are really tasty. If you get there early (typically before 8 PM) they do not charge a the usual $5 cover.
Second visit to Luckie's and I'm super disappointed...
1. Â Charging me $3 PER soda. Â Um, most places I know charge like half of that and always give me unlimited refills. Â I guess you don't want to encourage DDs.
2. Â I was sitting right next to the piano and I still couldn't understand like 75% of what the pianists were saying.
3. Â Old music. Â Not old-but-fun music, like Journey, but oldies I've never heard of and way too much country. Â The only current songs were the 2 that my group requested (Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber). Â Well, we only got half of each song because apparently the old people in the crowd (and there were quite a few of them) didn't like it, so they paid off the pianists to stop.
Luckies in Hampton used to be McFadden's until Cordish Company pulled the plug on that flop of an operation and installed a most-likely doomed NASCAR bar next door to it. Luckies itself is a piano bar, which is actually a welcome change. I rather like the place now that they got rid of that horrible general manager they had before who would have the DJ play rock anthems from the 80s in an attempt to keep out black people. Well, he succeeded. He also managed to alienate the entire crowd and McFadden's quickly became a vacant bar no one went to. Now, as Luckies, they have the live entertainment, and the guys who play piano there do cool covers of popular songs and take requests. The staff seems much happier, friendlier, and more coordinated. I definitely recommend checking this place out. And the décor on the inside is still absolutely beautiful, as it was when it was McFadden's. It's just that it's being handled properly finally. I hope this place manages to stay around, because they must have crazy overhead given the size of the place.
Review Source:Went there with my extended family while they were in town. Â We got there with plenty of time to grab a few tables as we had been warned it fills up quickly around 7:30. Â The pianists were exceptional and tried to play everything that was requested. Â The crowd was always involved and often one of the pianists would summons someone from the crowd as a prop for a song. Â The bar fare is just that. Â Drinks, chips, wings. Â Not much of a full up menu. Â They had a happy hour but it ended when the pianos spun up. Â Great location right on the water next to Saddle Ridge in the Power Plant commerce area. Â Not a weekly thing but definitely when you have guests to entertain. Â Overall, a nice experience and something that was needed in this area.
