This restaurant actually made me sign up to Yelp based on their inadequacy. My son goes to Miami U and Mac and Joes is a time honored institution. Mac andJoes primary customer is a student from MU. Â I'm pretty sure college food tastes better when you're in college based on my experience.
Service was fine...thus the two stars. My fish sandwich was the worst I've ever had...Dried out bun, way overcooked and oven kept slivers of what may have been nice cod at some point...now just almost powdery and fishy dried meal. coating on fish was like biting into some kind of fishy based potato chip but thicker. The accompanying onion rings were the worst I've ever had...Mainly because they were coated with batter that produced a 10 to 1 batter to onion ratio.
I tried to swallow down half my meal, based on the embarrassment factor I would cause my son by complaining, but it just became too inedibly bearable. I complained nicely to the college student waitress and she said she would see what she could do. They didn't comp my meal but gave me a 50 percent discount on my meal...or $5. No problem, again the embarrassment to son overruled my taste buds and sense of right and wrong.
If you go, try the burgers or anything but the fish sandwich. I won't be going to this restaurant though.
I met a group here for dinner/drinks for a friend's birthday. I liked that the week of Thanksgiving, we could be there around 9pm and have a huge long table right in the middle of the bar WITH table service. I didn't eat, but apparently their fried macaroni balls are really popular because I think we had a total of 3 orders of them. A couple friends also had real dinner of burgers or chicken strips and it was a lot of food for a decent price. For a beer and food with a large portion of fries, most people paid around $12. Plus everyone seemed to enjoy their food which is always nice in a bar atmosphere.
They also serve 32oz "tubs" of beer in addition to pints, which is pretty cool with me, and a nice touch to a college town bar.
I was told that this place is a Miami of Ohio staple and that I had to go check it out. The beer selection was decent and the drink specials were good. I also really enjoyed the mac-n-cheese bites. But overall, the place was just another dark college hang-out that didn't have any particular traits to set it apart from many of the other places in the area.
Review Source:Word on the street is that Mac & Joe's  is a "must eat" kind of place in Oxford.  It's been around for like 60 years and everyone - EVERYONE - knows it and loves it.  I went there my second day on the job here in Oxford and I have to admit, it was tasty.  The menu isn't far from what you'd expect it to be - bar food and slightly modified bar food, but it's tasty.  I had a steak sub - kind of a philly but with mushrooms and red sauce (so I guess not like a philly at all, really).  Plenty of Coke products to be had.  The bill for two was about $16 (though I didn't pay). Â
There are several other places to check out in and around Miami U but I expect I'll be back to Mac & Joe's before too long.
I was originally going to write this review once I had a chance to finally dine on some food here, but I realized after coming here weekly that there's nothing realistic that could drastically alter my opinion of the place.
This is Oxford's oldest bar, having been founded in 1946, and it is divided into two floors. Â The upstairs is where the kitchen is, and thus is closer to a sports bar. Â However, the basement (a.k.a. "The Brick Bar") is the part of the bar that is best for dancing - a DJ is there every Thursday and live bands sometimes perform there. Â The bartenders at both levels of the restaurant are lively and sociable, and can frequently be found dancing to songs such as Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger" or DMX's "Party Up (Up In Here)" (even though the song clearly has DMX rapping about killing people). Â If you come here often enough, there is a very good chance they will learn your name, like what Lindy did in the lower level with me.
This is kinda hard to find if you're not looking. Â This is at a junction of two alleys, and the only thing indicating it's there visible from High Street is a small "Mac & Joe's" sign. Â It is much easier to find than the Circle Bar, another alley bar.
I have been to every worthwhile bar in Oxford. Â I happily admit that this is my favorite, and should be checked out if you are in the area.
I used to work at Jimmy John's (11 years ago) and would make the trip across the alley to indulge in Mac & Joe's incredible wings whenever my stomach was feeling up to it. They were huge, meaty and delicious... everything buffalo wings should be.
But things have changed. They still advertise them as "jumbo" and charge nearly a buck per wing, but they're itty-bitty, sad little things... B-Dubs' stuff is more substantial. Their only saving grace is that the sauce is still decent.
And the chicken in the tacos I ordered was quite possibly the driest thing this side of the Sahara. It was almost like jerky.
I didn't complain, as I was hungry and not really in the mood to quibble, but I guess the next time I'm in Oxford and want decent wings, I'll head over to the chain restaurant around the corner.
One of Oxford's oldest bars and it's still one of the best. Found in an alley along High Street, this place is for 21+ patrons. The drinks are priced very reasonable with a very good happy hour. Large tubs of beer for about $5. The food at this place is SO good; not your typical bar fare. The burgers, salads, and sandwiches are all really big so it's impossible to leave this place hungry. There are two floors but both are pretty small. Live music sometimes downstairs. It's definitely a cozy place with all wood furniture. The servers are always friendly and remember regulars.
Review Source:Nice Oxford establishment, low key and off the beaten trail. Boasts being one of the oldest restaurants & saloon in Oxford. Â The Miami Tradition sandwich has been served there "since 1965" and is definitely worth a try. Â Great place to grab a meal with some friends, take your parents on a bar crawl or hang out with visiting alums who use to go there all the time. Great non-chain place to watch the Miami Hockey games and have a beer. I don't usually go there to drink and socialize but when I have the atmosphere has been nice and different from most Oxford bars. Upstairs is a little more bright and inviting, while the down stairs feels a little cold probably because of the brick walls and low lighting.
THINGS TO TRY:
Miami Tradition, Mac 'N Cheese Bites, Onion Rings, Guacamole Bacon Burger, Sicilian Burger, Wings (Medium).
PERSONAL FAVORITES:
Steak burger - Medium Rare w/ Onion Rings and Mac 'N Cheese Bites
It's dark and old-school Oxford. 21+ so no underclassmen. And the hardwoods make it feel cozy.
Ice cold frosty mugs, you gotta dig that.
They also pour some mean Irish car-bombs...
And they have Fantastic burgers... one of my faves in Oxford.
So, I guess that is my advice... follow the above order!
This was my bar when I was at Miami. I loved it there. Great for afternoon lunch and my favorite night was always wing night on monday's. It's a 21 bar at night, so you don't see any of the under crowd and with CJ's across the street, you won't go here to hook up. That being said, the food is good, the beer is cheap and I miss my mac n joes!
Review Source:I'm not a Miami alum, so Mac & Joe's doesn't hold quite the same nostalgic appeal for me as it does for my boyfriend, but I still had a great time! We stopped in after a hockey game, which was super-appropriate: the ceiling at Mac & Joe's is decorated with hockey sticks. The bartenders are friendly, and it's a nice, cozy little bar. Definitely a requisite stop on future Oxford visits!
