The food was superb! And the service and the atmosphere was excellent too. We will definitely go back again.

Definite signs of cost-cutting, but skill in the kitchen makes this still a worthwhile stop, IF you can afford it. The price is higher than you think, but the quality of ingredients and friendly service make it worthwhile.

Breakfast for inn guests needs to be reserved at a specific time. For both breakfast and dinner, you get a $14 credit. The breakfast chef is very skilled - the eggs are never the least bit browned, even on the omelets! There are very few breakfast places anywhere where the short-order cooks are that skillful.

Note that dining room is small and can be noisy when full. Tomato bisque made with their own canned tomatoes was very good. Duck liver pate was superb, not super-rich and thus full of intense liver goodness. Filet mignon was superb, as were its accompaniments.

My rack of lamb was tasty but cooked medium, not the medium-rare I'd ordered. Great sauce, too. But the lavender popover and dried cherry salad were pedestrian sides.

We found the dessert list too diner-like. The brandied cherry mascarpone souffle was good but it should be noted the chocolate sauce is sweet dark chocolate. I'm a bittersweet fan all the way, so I found this much too sugary for my taste. My DH liked it, however.

Coffee is the local Thanksgiving brand, one of our long-time favs. Service was a little slow (DR was full) but thorough; all the staff at MacCallum are top-notch professionals.

It's a nice place with good food, and they're good at all the little things. If you go for breakfast, try the home made pork sausage. I will never order bacon instead of it again. It's that good.

Went here for a late dinner with my husband and had a very enjoyable time.

We each got an appetizer. He got a soup du jour, a cream of mushroom soup that was good, and I got a grilled flatbread, which wasn't impressive and was incredibly salty. For the main course, he had a rack of lamb (which he really liked) and I had the nightly pasta special, which was very good.

I think it's a bit cheeky to charge $14 for a flatbread that's essentially a store bought pita thrown on the grill, topped with some toppings and then cut into 8 tiny wedges. Not impressed by that, to be honest.

I'm not overwhelmed by the eating options in Mendocino to begin with since so many menus tend to look similar and charge an arm and a leg for the items, but MacCallum House is a solid option for decent food if you're looking for something.

I've been in Mendocino for a while and never realized MacCallum had a restaurant. During the whale festival I walked through the garden and ended up in front of their entrance looking at their menu. I was sold! What caught my eye were the Pacific Rim Oysters with grapefruit & black pepper granita.

A few days later my guy and I made a reservation for their chefs tasting menu.

MacCallum House is one of the historic buildings in Mendo. The restaurant dinning room is the 3 ground floor rooms, with a small bar just off the lobby. There looks to be a fireplace in each of the dinning rooms which all work. We were seated next to a window beside the fireplace. It was so charming and the staff was incredibly nice. I think the music could be a touch louder cause you can listen to everyone else conversations, which personally I enjoy! ;)

We had the tasting menu with wine paring. (I have posted a picture of the menu)

I suggest this to anyone visiting or locals. I wouldn't mind staying in one of their suites either. When I left a grabbed a brochure which showed beautiful rooms, with ocean & garden views. They also have a complimentary breakfast and a $14 a day dining credit to be used in their restaurant or bar.

Mac House was a great evening and I can't wait to take my Aunts there for wine & lunch someday!

The duck was absolutely the best we ever ate!

Everything I had here was perfect. The duck was juicy with crispy skin. The ginger carrot soup was delicious. I would give it five stars if its just for the food. The price was a little on the expensive side.

Everything was GREAT...EXCEPT the oysters! My duck was fantastic and my husband's steak was the same. Expensive but really good. The oysters were so bad I couldn't even eat them. The condiment was also terrible. Would have been a 5 start visit otherwise.

Desserts:
Chocolate extraveganza
Pumpkin Souffle
Chocolate Nut Ice cream

Along with my stay here, I was provided 10$ vouchers. Perfect to use for a great meal or in my case, desserts to cap off my other dinner choices. Every option was great, very sweet, savory, and portioned just right.

The Souffle was fantastic. Definitely my favorite of the bunch. Paired well with cinnamon spice.

We were very pleased with the beautiful victorian home the restaurant was housed in. We had a 7 pm reservation. We arrived right on time, and checked in. Then we waited an additional 15 minutes to be seated, which seemed a bit excessive as no one else was waiting to be seated at that time. While we waited, two other couples came in to be seated. They were greeted maybe 5 minutes after coming in. Once again, not very timely. We had a very wonderful meal. We enjoyed the mushroom bisque, the crab cakes, and the rack of lamb. All three plates were very well seasoned and prepared. Our only complaint is that the chef was a bit heavy on the salt. The service could have been better. Our server did not describe the entree when she served it. In addition, she did not check to see if all was cooked to order. Having said all that we would definitely return.

What a great romantic dinner. They didn't hit 5 stars simply because they "ran out" of dessert. How does that happen?

Nice small menu, and they did it right. The portions were perfect. (They look small, but they're perfect!) Great local wine selection, at reasonable prices. Waitress was fantastic and very friendly. My fiance and I will definitely come back - because we want to try the breakfast menu! :)

I've been to Mendocino several times and always stop by the MacCallum House for a delicious brunch or dinner. I was lucky enough to stay at the MacCallum House B&B last week, and they include a complimentary breakfast for all their guests. And this is no ordinary complimentary breakfast that's really just an assortment of scones and maybe a bottle of non-fresh orange juice. This breakfast is the bomb! I'm getting hungry just thinking about it - it's that good!

The first morning of my stay, I ordered these banana wheat pancakes with pecan syrup. They were delicious and the portion was just right - not small at all but not so huge that I wasn't able to clean my plate.

The next morning I ordered the eggs MacBenedict which is like a regular eggs benedict but also has some fresh spinach included. It was also delicious.

Since I went on the off-season, the service was a tiny bit slow (I had to ask for hot water for my tea three times before getting any). However, I do understand how it can be difficult for the staff to judge how many people might be in town during the off-season. I bet it's typically pretty slow so they don't have too many people scheduled to work, but the day I was there was kind of busy. Anyway, waiting for some hot water was no big deal.

I also really love the atmosphere here. One side of the restaurant looks out onto the grounds and has a big stone fireplace on one of the walls - the decor is darker and more cozy. The other side of the restaurant is kind of like a glassed in porch and has a great view of the ocean. I really enjoyed sitting here in the morning since it was so sunny.

Pros:
-Great food. I've come here a lot and everything I've ordered has been delicious!
- Great atmosphere. I love how the restaurant has two very different/distinct sides/atmospheres.

Cons:
- Service can be a tad slow during the off-season, but it's not terribly slow and I understand where they're coming from.

Legend has it that the perfectly mixed manhattan can be found here.

My wife knows her manhattans and it's she that so stated this proclamation. Who am I to doubt my favorite drinking partner?

I will say this, maybe there are better manhattans in the world but you would be hard pressed to find a more impressive setting in which to sip away the afternoon.

This tiny bar located just off the main dining room of the MacCallum House Restaurant is a must for any fan of mixed cocktails, kick ass wine or locally crafted beers. It's always on our list of spots that we must hit up before dinner and enjoy some of the best drinks and meeting some interesting people (locals and tourists). Given the quality of the drinks, the prices are very reasonable and the bartenders are more than happy to let you sample an unfamilair bourbon before mixing up your favorite drink.

First time going there but have walked by about a bunch of times!

Made a reservation which seem like we hit an off weekend so didn't really help. Food was really great with a few solid vegetarian options. Service was friendly and polite. Atmosphere was great as there was a nice fire with not too dark low lighting.

...less walking by, more going in is my resolution!

2. Staff was very friendly..
3. Bartenders were very Kewl

Be nice if you could book in advance using an app of some sort.
Food spoting or OpenTable. would have been great.

All in all good stuff and a good place,.

I was really impressed with MacCallum House's catering. I really liked their duck on some cabbage, and their oysters were also very nice. I also really liked their perfectly-cooked lamb main dish.

The waiters and waitresses were all smiles and very attentive.

Called to made reservations for 7:00 after checking Open Table and not finding anything available after 6:15 on Friday night? Only two tables were taken in the dining-room when we arrived, but had to wait 15-20 minutes while the hostess chatted with a friend that just dropped by (BTW, this happened at every restaurant in Mendocino). We were more than a little surprised at how cramped, unpolished and sticky everything was; a tablecloth would have at least covered it up.

Pros:
Waiter knew what to expect from the kitchen and he presented it very well.
My duck was above average and my wife enjoyed the sea bass.

Cons:
Unprofessional and unorganized.
Decor of a coffee shop and 5-star prices ($220 for dinner and wine).
Mendocino needs to get over itself and lose the sloppy delivery.

Great food and a great place to stay. The highlight on the breakfast side was the eggs Benedict, but the cornmeal pancakes with blueberry jam were pretty great as well. Their bar isn't too shabby either, as they take their bar "condiments" seriously. They also have live music some nights and wine tastings on the weekends. Oh yeah, the views aren't too shabby either...

Went there on Friday night - same day reservation. I was ready for a hearty meal, was not going to count my calories but at the same time I was not intending to blow my whole vacation over the next day guilt of eating greasy food. This place totally met my expectation. Yes a $19 burger + Mushroom on the side and $16 fried chicken is a bit excessive but hey, we were on vacation and we felt we might as well have our Niman Ranch burger and eat it too! The Chicken was crispy, very well prepared the cayenne pepper was enough to give you the kick that you needed. Cole Slaw (fried chicken side) was thinly shredded and very crunchy and I appreciated very much.

I would have probably give the food 4.5 but dinning out is about the ambiance and the cuisine. The place was cozy and friendly, Josh our server was quick on his toes and took care of us very well. What really completed this experience for us were the live Jazz player local Duo who played Guitar and the other guy played Sax and Clarinet. They were surprisingly AWESOME!

Consider that just for listening to a live jazz in Bay Area is gonna cost you minimum 25-45 dollar - I really thought this place created the ambiance and the quality of food that we were looking for a couple out on their vacation.

Fine-restaurant prices for food that made us say "meh". I'm not a wealthy person, so there is some tragedy associated with eating a $37 entrée and declaring it "OK".

Pros:
-Sweet staff
-Novelty of eating in a Victorian house
-Well-presented food

Cons:
-Forgettable food
-Low value for the money

I had several meals here (Breakfast & Dinner) and here are my praises and gripes...

PRAISES:
1. Food was consistently good and fresh using only local, non-GMO ingredients
2. Wait staff were very friendly, always on point and accommodating
3. Bartenders were friendly offering up great suggestions
4. Fell in love with Daisy's Dosage (Grape juice in either Pinot or Gewurtztraminer
varietals splashed with soda water) however I loved the Gewurtz better.

GRIPES:
1. Morning Hostess - She forgot things that were told to her just a moment before including seating a party because she thought they came in before us, wrong.
2. Some attention to detail wasn't there like what looked like dried porcini butter on the salt shaker spout.
3. The overly linty napkins, I was a cotton swab after I was done with it!
4. Inability to check me in using OpenTable. Let's just say they need some training.

So one star gone for the gripes above but it was a nice little restaurant nonetheless!

4 Stars, 4 Key Points

1. The food IS as good as it is touted to be. Wine pairings are impeccable.

2. The space is not all that. Small, cramped, noisy and slightly sticky.

3. The dinner chef (Alan Kantor) dances circles around the breakfast chef (Lupe Something). After all, sea scallops are sex and a breakfast burrito can only be so inventive.

4. The MacCallum House and the Bed and Breakfast that reside here are atrocious. A parallel dimension needs to evacuate and take Chef Kantor and all of his deliciousness away from it.

They only thing that holds Chef Kantor back is the fact that his dishes are served out of this dump of an old house. No haters, I don't appreciate old houses like this. I prefer a suite at the four season. But I would like to take chef Kantor home with me. I will chain him to the radiator in my bedroom with a hot plate within reach. I'm already researching what wines I can pair him with and I've never met the man.

Great food, loose the termite palace as a venue. You always have a place on my radiator pipe Alan.

This is a nice little restaurant and bar at a hotel. The bar side apparently has more food options with the bar menu, but if you want a nice atmosphere without hulking over a small table, the restaurant side is nice too.

We got some cocktails to start (they were strong!). I had the half-dozen oysters, but was horribly disappointed. The oysters weren't well-shucked, I kept biting into bits and pieces of the shell, and they were really fishy. Not the freshest, I guess.

The scallops did redeem the bad oysters. They were well complemented by the wasabi sauce, and the bok choy that accompanied it was really nice as well. The mashed potatoes, however, were a bit runny...perhaps the polenta would have gone with the scallops better?

Dessert was the high point of the dinner. They have superb house-made ice cream, and the praline cookie taco is the way to go. It consists of small scoops of all 6 flavours of the ice cream, served on a curved praline cookie, shaped like a taco. It was fantastic and a must-try!

All in all, while the dinner was not terribly pleasing, the drinks and desserts were delightful. Be sure to stop by the bar if you feel like some after dinner eats.

This would have been 5 stars were it not for the breakfast service the second day.

Day one was great. Breakfast is included for guests of the hotel and did not disappoint in the least. I had the Eggs MacBenedict and they were delicious. House made bread instead of muffins, coffee, mimosa or orange juice. Everything was great. Service was on point. Coffee never got below half full, very attentive. All this as a walk in. We had tried to book a reservation the evening before because the dining area is relatively small and they are open to the public. We were told that reservations were full until 10:15 and we had massage appointments so decided to come as walk ins. Worked out fine.

We also had dinner there that evening. Service was a bit slower but the food was very good.

They do an "Afternoon at the Mac" happy hour in the bar. Great drinks at good prices. The bartender was an older gentleman that was quite interesting and seemed to really enjoy crafting new versions of some older drinks.

Day 2, the service was way off. Thank goodness we did not get this the first day, we would never have made our appointment. We were walk ins once again but it wasn't as busy as Day 1 and again we were seated immediately. Our server was partly to blame. Took our orders but only after we got coffee refills from the pots set up in the bar did he offer. Food took almost 40 minutes to arrive. Fortunately the quality was still good. I guess all's well that ends well......

Craft cocktails in little old Mendocino? You better bet your sweet sazerac.

The bar area is small, so be prepared to take your drink out to the wraparound porch, unless you're fine with being volleyed in between customers and servers as they wiggle there way in and out of the joint.

Bring a suitcase full of cash and prepare to hunt and gather for your nightly dinners.

We stayed at the MacCallum House's suite property and I must say that it was the nicest hotel room I've ever stayed at in America. It's definitely the closest I will ever come to knowing what it feels like to spend the night at a mansion. I have merely 3 quibbles about my overall experience:

1: I lugged our 3 suitcases all the way up 3 flights of windy staircases to check in to the hotel only to be notified that our room wasn't in the main building and I would have to lug the bags back downstairs, put them in the car, drive to the suite property, and then unload them into our room. Frustrating.

2: No joke, bring a suitcase full of cash. It seemed to me that roughly 90% of the businesses in Mendocino are cash only. It's a bit inconvenient and a little odd considering Mendocino is dependent on tourism. What made it worse is the fact that there's only one bank in town and it's one ATM was on the fritz making it incredibly difficult to pay for anything.

3: The town shuts down at 5 during the week and that includes restaurants so plan ahead for dinner.

Tried this gorgeous B&B for breakfast on our last day in Mendocino. We were told they had a great dining room (breakfast, lunch and dinner), and it was not exclusive to guests only.

We shared a breakfast burrito. They split it for us and served the huge halves on separate plates. Yes, it was good, as was the freshly made guacamole and house-made salsa. The accompanying breakfast potatoes, to die for.

Coffee... ok...but from our recent travels, I am becoming a snob. So, not best from my standpoint.

The grounds surrounding the B&B are beautiful. If it had not been so chilly that morning, we would have chosen to sit on the front porch while eating our breakfast.

I would love to return here.

Our favorite meal in Mendocino.

Pacific rim oysters ($16, six on the half shell, horseradish & verjus mignonette http://www.yelp.com/biz_…). Not sure where the horseradish was, but these were fresh and meaty. The Mignonette added a delicious brightness.

Evening soup - potato leek with fromage blanc ($9, http://www.yelp.com/biz_…) Rich and earthy. It tasted like there were some wild mushroom umami-ing it up.

Dungeness crab tamales ($16, adobo sauce, crema, chile sea salt, pear, radish & lime salad http://www.yelp.com/biz_…) The tamales and adobo sauce were great. Very crabby. The pear, radish & lime salad was virtually inedible. There was a large amount of cayenne making it a scorcher. One bite was enough. We heard another table comment about the overly spiced salad as well.

Cannelloni alla gratinata ($27, roasted butternut squash, caramelized onions, pumpkin seed pesto, Point Reyes farmstead blue cheese, sautéed chard, toasted pine nuts http://www.yelp.com/biz_…) If you like butternut squash you need to order this dish! Contrasting bites of the pesto and then the blue cheese gave a salty balance to the dish. To pick nits, this was a manicotti (crepe), not cannelloni (pasta), but still delicious.

Our waiter was funny and helpful in choosing our dishes and our drinks.

The pot de creme and the shortbread were two of the best damn desserts we have ever had. Ever. You hear me?
While staying near Mendocino MacCallum House became our go to spot for tasty and thirsty enjoyment night after night.
Nifty space, ultra-convenient location, delicious foods, and quality cocktails.
After the wine is gone I recommend a tamarind whiskey sour on the veranda.

We had dinner in the main dining area as well as breakfast in the cafe area. Therefore, my review is based on both experiences.

Pros:
-Dinner: we order duck breast and chicken. They were both absolutely delicious.
-Breakfast: the only memorable part was the orange juice which was freshly squeezed and amazing!
-They accommodated us with a baby (not many restaurants here have high chairs, believe it or not)

Cons:
-Horrible service. The staff is snoooooootyyyyyy!!!!
-Breakfast: I had the yogurt/fruit parfait and Lupe's breakfast burrito and my husband had the 2 eggs version - they were all just ok
-Very pricey and not up to par.

Would we come back? Maybe sometimes for dinner. It's worth a try.

Best. Burger. Ever.

Shocking, I know. This is America; can we as Americans ever really find the perfect burger? Well, my standards are very stringent, but more on that later, okay?

After a loooong drive up from the Bay Area, we arrived after dark. A quick check-in (please see my review of the MacCallum House Inn for more information), a couple of drink chips in our grubby little hands, a plunk-down of our luggage, and ten minutes later, we were in the bahhh with drinks in hand.

The dinner menu looked good, and there were tables available, so we abandoned our vague plans to wander into the cool, dark mist to find a restaurant that struck our fancy, and suck it up and eat at the hotel restaurant.

We both got the burger. I don't know why, but I like my burgers medium, plain. Pink is fine, but I do not want any onion, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise or whatever else you put on a burger. MAYBE BBQ sauce, but that's just maybe. My boyfriend isn't as picky about toppings, but we both decided these were the juiciest, most perfectly flavored burgers either of us had ever eaten.

The next four mornings, we ate breakfast in the Inn restaurant. I don't think we ever strayed from the complimentary menu, but YUM.

Go for the breakfast burrito (even if you are not a breakfast burrito person), and the corncakes.

If you are staying at the Inn, this restaurant is such a great value. The food is delicious, and the fact that breakfast is complimentary as part of your stay at the Inn makes life easy and wonderful. The service can be a little saccharine, but it's always attentive.

Go here!

Mendocino and great mixology... Who wouldda thunk it?

I was surprised to find the most impressive cocktails and bar ingredients in Mendocino, at Grey Whale Bar.

Tony puts a lot of TLC into his drinks. Check out the ingredients lining the bar: dried rose buds, star anise, fresh eggs, chilies, ... he even uses house-made Pinot Noir molasses...

The food here is also exceptional. For breakfast , order the Benedict. For dinner, I loved the the pappardelle appetizer and the duck entree. For dessert, stick to homemade ice creams.

I just came back from Mendocino, staying at the MacCallum house Inn on Saturday night which included dinner reservations at their restaraunt.

This is is my 3rd stay in recent years at the hotel I have also had dinner several times to. The inn is very relaxing, and since times are tough they added a complimentary bottle of wine for guests and a full breakfast (which I never had received in the past).

I had a wonderful dinner on Saturday night. We started with a simple green salad, then had a flat bread with wild mushrooms, bitter greens, fontina cheese, parmesan and truffle oil. It was fantastic. Main courses were duck breasts with endive/apple and venison with a blackberry sauce. This is the second time I have had the venison there and I have to say it is absolutely WONDERFUL......a 5 star plate!

Dinner service was excellent.

Breakfast included coffee and mimosa, I had a buffalo hash with poached eggs, my partner had the omelet with chanterelle mushrooms and spinach and cheese. We cleaned our plates.

I love this place and will continue to return here when visiting Mendocino!

I'd give this place all five stars if not for the weird quirk that they don't have outside service. Let me explain. You can seat outside. They will take your plate / glass, but you have to go get your own drink / food - really?? That makes no sense...

We ate here twice. The drinks are cool and very inventive. The food is good and you can see how fresh all of the ingredients are... the views are beautiful, but c'mon guys get some outside service, please!!!!

So, let me be clear... I give the MacCallum House Restaurant breakfast a four star for breakfast and a two star for dinner. The location is epic, the restaurant set on the first floor of a historic Victorian with views of the garden and ocean and a serene feeling to it. Breakfast is da bomb, I particularly loved the Lupe "Fiasco" breakfast burrito, but go ahead and order the orange juice and the Thanksgiving coffee, it's all good and if you're staying at the hotel, it's all free.

On my most recent visit (OK, I've only been here twice, but that sounded cool), I did have the occasion to dine here as well. I think I botched the order though. I took the St. Louis style ribs, which were soft, not particularly flavorful, and kind of soppy. The herb french fries were much better. My Angel had the Braised Halibut which was delicious. The fresh made ice cream is out of this world and the Thanksgiving coffee in the French press rocks. All in all a very romantic and if you pick the right entrees great meal.

So included with the price of the room is a complimentary breakfast. I'll start by saying all the people that work here bend over backwards to accommodate their guests. One morning I arrive solo and was seated immediately, then ran into a friend, so got moved to a 2 top, then another couple we were friends with arrived and they instantly moved us to yet another table without one eye-roll.

On to the food: Day 1 I went with the much raved breakfast burrito. It really was special. The sausage was house made and the main attraction inside the tortilla. Playing supporting roles were scrambled eggs, white cheddar, roasted red bell peppers, red onions, cilantro,
sour cream, guacamole, and a lite chunky salsa. It really was upscale but amazey. Day 2 I went kind of basic with the Red Plate Special: two eggs, griddled red potatoes, sourdough toast, and added the
Roundman's apple-alderwood smoked bacon, which was cut really thick and was expertly cooked, not too crunchy, not too chewy.

I had one dinner here, and it was for the wedding. I'm not sure if they brought in caterers for the gig, but looking at their dinner menu, I'm guessing it was an inside job. I had the Niman Ranch filet mignon steak, with horseradish creme fraiche mashed potatoes, cherry & black pepper compound butter, cabernet demi-glace. It was a generous cut for a filet and was served spot-on the medium rare tip. Three other people at my table had the same option and each one of us got it per our specified level of cookage. Well done!

The bartenders were also super wonderful and accommodating. I brought a bottle of McCallen scotch for my room for the weekend, and since that was the last night I asked the bartender if she would keep it behind the bar, and she had no problem other then saying I had to pour my own drinks per house regulations. Don't mind if I do.

Great job MacCallum House. I will rave you to anyone heading to Northern Cali!

My parents stayed at the MacCallum House this past weekend, which led to a few stops in to the restaurant and cafe.

Our first night in town we popped in for their free drinks at the bar. While Dick's Place is a better choice for heavy drinking, and the pub up the street is better for beer, The Grey Whale Bar has unique, perfect cocktails and a good selection of alcohol. My gin & tonic included muddled rosemary--a great combination.

While drinking, we were lured in by the cafe menu and decided to stay for dinner. The cafe is casual and there were several tables with kids. The menu is longer than the dinging room menu (and includes everything on that menu as well) I also thought that the wrap-around sun room where you eat was prettier than the formal dining room.

Our dinner food was all good, though not as outstanding or interesting as it sounded on paper. As a table we shared: the green salad, the duck confit, the crab tamales, a burger, the pasta special, the shrimp pot pie, and the wild boar sausage bread pudding. The bread pudding was the table favorite, with the duck confit and the burger coming in second. The tamales lacked flavor (all the crab I've had so far this season seems that way) and the pot pie wasn't actually a pie, but more a plate of pie filling with some puff pastry on the side.

The highlight of the dinner for me was the huckleberry dessert with a glass of Highland Park 12 scotch.

Later in the trip I joined them for their complimentary breakfast in the dining room. The breakfast was very good. My eggs benedict was perfectly done with very flavorful hollandaise sauce, meat that actually tasted like meat instead of like a processed meat product that you sometimes find on eggs beni, and fresh spinach. The buckwheat crepes I sampled were excellent also. The only thing I didn't like about breakfast was my mimosa, which didn't have enough orange juice in it, and tasted a whole lot like an EmergenC (the cold fighting drinks).

We were really disappointed with our dinner here. I had been looking forward to this meal and really wanted to enjoy it. But even though Mom and I were "oh this is nice" "impressive presentation" "pretty tasty"-ing throughout the meal, in hindsight we were just being polite and trying to make the most of our last night on our Girls Trip to Mendocino.

Decor was great - we were seated just inside the rustic old MacCallum B&B main house. Our table gazed out over the beautiful front grounds and was situated right next to a crackling fire. The waiter was pleasant and friendly and did everything right. Wine and spirits list was expansive and the food selections were impressive.

But sadly... the food was just not that great.

*Seared Black Pepper Encrusted Ahi with warm bacon vinaigrette, fingerling potatoes and Comanche Creek lettuce. Mom had this appetizer for dinner since all we'd been doing the last few days was eating and she needed a break! She's JUST started eating raw fish (I finally got her on the band-wagon about 20 years late) and is still a bit squeamish so asked for the ahi to be cooked "medium". I'm not sure what that stands for in fish as opposed to meat, nor do I know how difficult it is to gauge; but her fish was definitely well done. She was okay with it but the flavor of the sauce wasn't too spectacular and overall the dish was okay.

*Pan Seared Liberty Farm Duck Breast with fromage blanc bread pudding and blood orange port sauce. The duck was good, but the sauce (I was expecting it to be fantastic because I LOVE wine reductions) was just okay. The bread pudding was interesting and tasty but might have been better with the dish had the sauce been a touch sweeter. Just my opinion...

*Bittersweet Chocolate Cheesecake Souffle with Cabernet infused cherries. This was SUCH a disappointment. ESPECIALLY after we'd had such a fantastic souffle at Rendezvous just 2 nights ago. Mom and I were so excited to have a second souffle after almost dying over Rendezvous's and were just plain sad upon tasting this one. I do realize "bittersweet" is the first word in the description but this dessert was almost not sweet. It was overbaked too, and while it was beautifully high, it was totally dry inside when it should have been moist. I was hoping the infused cherries would add some sweetness but they didn't. I was SO disappointed in this dessert. Even Mom commented how unsatisfying it was as a dessert (she's usually a very forgiving diner).

MacCallum House is a beautiful place with amazing gardens and a gorgeous B&B (including other venues all over town). If they could polish up the taste of the food to match the presentation - they'd be unstoppable.

Me and my fiance love the food here. We've eaten 4 breakfasts and 2 dinners - all fabulous.

The breakfast burrito, cod cakes, omlettes and egg benedicts are yummy. I love the potatoes - very tasty - seasoned just right. The wait staff in the day is young and less experienced than the night staff. But that just give the restaurant a more laid back feel. We like that about this place.

Dinner is fabulous -- both times we had excellent waiters. Very attentive, and offer recommendations. We loved the Neiman Hangar Stead and Filet Mignon. Also, the appetizers were excellent - we had both raw and broiled oysters, and flatbread. The portions are very generous ... the food is just so flavorful. We definitely eat way to much as not to waste anything.

The dessert is my least favorite - we had the souffle and ice-cream. Light and a little bland. I'm still giving the food a 4 (would give a 4 1/2) because I feel the food is excellent.

Good wine selection with not over the top prices.
