Comfy atmosphere, It truly does a good job of being a bar and a restaurant. Some places lack on one or the other. I Tried there chicken dish with the sausages and they also had a tuna dish which was great. There salads are great, and the portions are not going to fill you up if you go there starving.
Review Source:Came here on Thanksgiving and have been a handful of times prior to T-day. I went against the grain and ordered wild salmon - no sauce. I have a difficult time turning down wild salmon if it's an option. The salmon was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The top had a crispy crust and each piece sectioned off into a tender flaky bite. I finished the whole piece, probably almost 6oz. worth. Came with green beans which were a little overcooked and flavored mainly with fresh garlic. The shrimp cocktail appetizer tasted extremely fresh; I was pleasantly surprised. Their chop chop salad is a classic and features perfectly complimentary components; avocado, gorgonzola and bacon. However, I suggest ordering dressing on the side otherwise they tend to be heavy-handed in application. The bar is a welcoming and warm place and the restaurant has many devoted regulars. I once tried their asian chicken salad and it wasn't a great experience. I work nearby and have heard my co-workers rave about the "Madison Burger", saying that many other burgers can't compete. Years ago I also ordered a paella that was fantastic. This is a solid neighborhood joint with some good and varying menu options.
Review Source:Very disappointed, crab cakes were tiny, stir fry was very salty, with yellow "bag rice".
Drinks are very expensive. We had lunch and dinner there on two separate occasions, my friends had stated that they had noticed that the food and service had deteriorated recently, they eat there on regular basis. It is priced high end, but it is way below Bonefish Grill, which is part of Outback chain. Very disappointing!!!
Really a 3.5 - A solid option in the North Riverdale restaurant scene...not that there are many.
Madisons has a warm and inviting atmosphere, especially during the holiday season with all of the lights and Christmas decor. Â The place is very clean, but VERY warm - I was getting really sweaty by the end of the meal.
Solid wine list and some good bottled beers - but no beers on tap, which I though was strange for a place that features a full bar up front. Â
The menu is well fleshed out, with many Italian offerings, and steak, veal, chicken and pork options. Â Started with the Pear salad and Calamari. Â Both excellent. Â The Pear Salad was dressed perfectly a with just the right amount of goat cheese. Â And what a portion!!
The Black Angus sirloin was great, but ever so slightly over cooked (ordered it MR). Â The accompanying broccoli florets were undercooked and extra crunchy, but still manageable.
Also had the penne a la vodka, and the sauce was excellent. Â The pasta was perfectly al dente. Â
Service was quick and friendly. Â All in all a nice dinner in a pleasant atmosphere. Â And in the 'hood, so no trek to the city! Â Madisons is worth a shot for sure!
The service was good, food was OK, had steak dinner there, but the place was so dark, I could hardly see what I was eating. I asked the waitress to turn up the lights and she came back and said the bartender says he is under strict rules to not turn up the lights... strict rules? This was a Monday night and there were three other people eating there. I felt like a rat in the dark trying to see what I am cutting. One of the owners was at the bar. I will not be back, the prices were too expensive and the food only so so, and I could barely see it. OK if you are blind.
Review Source:Came here recently on a Saturday afternoon around 1:00 pm. Â The restaurant was about half full. Â My party of 6, which included 5 adults and a baby were accomodated without issue. Â The menu was pretty standard for a bar and grill, with the usual variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrees.
I ordered one of the salads that was a special - came with blackened chicken, jicama, mixed grens, and feta cheese. Â There was a nice sized chicken breast that was perfectly seasoned and grilled. Â The other salads that were ordered, one an asian-inspired one with fried chicken and a salad with grilled shrimp were both plentiful with ingredients and enjoyed. Â The other 2 in my party ordered the southwestern burger with avocado, served with fries and both raved about it.
We split 2 desserts - key lime pie and brownie sundae, both were very decadent and sweet.
Everything we ordered was between $9 and $12 and the portions were exrtremely generous. Â The service was very good - our water was refilled often and the server came over multiple times to check on us. Â If the restuarant were located in Manhattan as opposed to Riverdale, I would think the prices would be at least 50% higher. Â
I'm not sure if the menu changes for dinner, but I would definitely recommend it for lunch. Â Very reasonably priced and very tasty food.
Be safe in knowing that this is a very solid restaurant for adults. Â The drinks are poured well, the food is prepared nicely, the variety is good and the service is fine. Â Tables are well-spaced and seating is comfortable. Â It is not a trendy place for the latest fusion dishes and deconstructions of cuisine. Â It is a solid, comfortable place to chill out after a tough week, have a few drinks, a bottle of wine, a nice steak, and decompress. Â It's for grownups who are comfortable in their own skin. Â If you are not, go to any of a million places in Williamsburg or the LES.
Review Source:Everyone needs to stop hatin on Madisons, like NOW. Because they are obviously ordering the wrong stuff... Now you can try and call this review tainted, but I do what I want, and what I want is to eat a Madisons 'Chop Chop Salad' every damn day of my life. Â I NEVER EAT SALADS and this is heaven in your freaking mouth, I feel like such a fatty when I order it because my mouth starts salivating like I'm Pavlovs dog or something. Â Anyways, just trust me chopped up lettuce, grilled chicken, red peppers, avocado, bacon bits, Gorgonzola cheese and Thyme Vinegerette dressing... Yes technically speaking it's what you could call "expensive", but it is so good its worth starving myself a week of pay just for this delicious treat. Ya that's right I said it.
Review Source:My husband and I have been going to Madisons for years. Â It is a neighborhood restaurant so we enjoy the convenience, but we rarely find a restaurant within a short drive to the Upper West Side or nearby Westchester with better food. Â The chop-chop salad is so delicious, it's like eating candy. Â Even though the dinner includes a tossed salad, I always order this salad. Â They have a some amazing appetizers including the charred angus strips and the portobello mushroom with goat cheese. Â Their main dishes are well made. I particularly like the salmon. Â The place is not exactly a hip, young crowd, but when you want good, well prepared food, this place provides it consistently. Â The service has always been good and the fact that we have been their scores of times speaks for itself.
Review Source:Madison's is a pleasant place to visit,s specially in this part of Riverdale. It is good for couples as well as families. It is a little bit on the expensive side, but the pasta is the best I have ever had north of 96th street.
The food is very tasty, the portions are very filling, the pasta, as well as the salads, are very fresh.
I worked in an office building next door to Madison's for four years. Â I've been here for many lunches and some after-work dinners. Â I've always found the service to be average, the food to be over-priced and mediocre. Â And as another reviewer said, the portions are most-often small and unsatisfying. Â Do yourself a favor and head to Riverdale pizza up the block for a great slice.

In an ever-changing world, and with the state of affairs the economy has most of the general public , I find myself paying attention to things that I have not necessarily given much thought to before. Call it preventive maintenance ,call it caution, call it whatever you wish, but  there is an un-nerving air that is being breathed ........and not just by myself.
In the past, going out to eat relied pretty much on the contention of "the reputation" of the restaurant. From breakfast at a local diner, to the burger at a pub, to the Chilean Sea Bass at at a "Haute Cuisine" bistro, the expectations were pretty much about the image the business portrayed and the attention was about the mood or company of friends we were in.....not so today. It is now a growing trend amongst the general consensus that everybody(businesses) be competitive when it comes to the "perception of value". No longer are the days of tolerating or accepting anything less than what we are paying for.
With that in mind and the writing clearly on the wall, how can food mongers disregard with utter blatancy, the consumer and the times that we exist in today? Is there no more romance ,chivalry , or conscience alive today in the "service industry" they are operating in? Is there no more passion that drives our ambitions to be successful? I think not. While this is not my feeling across the board, it is a growing picture that some just don't see. There are some who get it ,and are listening. The answer lies with us, the consumer.
Change is the one thing that remains constant in the world today. It is a beautiful thing once we awaken to accept it. If we are paying for a service and accept anything short of satisfaction, well then shame on us, the customer. If the "service" for which we are looking for, falls short of our expectations, well then shame on the product. What can, and must be done, is to deliver the message of thought to the proprietor and allow change to take place. After all, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck ,and quacks like a duck, it is a good sign it is a duck if enough people tell you.
Now as open-minded as this seems, the "perception of value" relies on the idea of complimenting and thanking those who do a good job. This is how our expectations get met..Besides, what  better feeling is there to share your experience but with a smile..........
                                                         A.K.A.  "MrJ"
During my undergrad, whenever my friends and I had some beer money we didn't use, we would go to this posh place and order the chop-chop salad, a wonderful concoction with lollo rosso or curly lettuce or some escarole, Â sometimes with grilled chicken on top. It's spritzed with the house vinaigrette, consists of avocado, red onion, and other great ingredients.
The penne was cooked al dente and the sauce was more gourmet than traditional, which is understandable. The burger is excellent. There's a bar. Lunch is better than dinner.
Honestly, I am surprised about the negative reviews for this place. I have been here several times and the food has always been fantastic. The only real negative is the cost - it is on the expensive side, but I am always willing to treat myself every once in a while to a nice meal. My favorite dishes are their ravioli and Fettuccine Ala Madison's.
Review Source:I agree 100% with Sheri W's review, so rather than re-review:
The portions are small. I usually walk out of there hungry, so it pays to go for soup or appetizers.
As part of the service, they bring a house salad (pre-dressed) to the table, family style, which is a nice touch.
You don't have to constantly ask for still water, as they bring decanters of water to your table, which is another nice touch.
Otherwise, Sher's review is spot on. In fact, I only go there with the parents:)
Interior: Nice.
Food: Decent but nothing to write home about.
Service: Poor.
Bartender: Nice.
$: Overpriced for what you get.
Wine List: Decent but does not match Manhattan.
Bonuses: Private Party Room, lunch specials, nice bar. Â
Tidbits: Good place to take parents when they are in town and don't want to go to the city.
