This place always looked closed when driving past it on Veterans Parkway, but the parking is behind the building.
My first experience there was great. It's a basic bar; beer only, billiards, darts, music. They defuse trouble before it happens, there is no cover-charge, and the people are very down to earth. Much like James W.'s review, I felt like I was among friends at Mama's Bar.
My only negative feeling is the smoking. However, considering the environment and location, it's common and accepted.
It's not much to look at from the outside - Mama's resembles a ramshackle shack more than a nightlife establishment. We were surprised, upon entering, to find billiards, darts, and a friendly bartender who offered up cans of beer (PBR's for $1.50) and the long history of the place. Other patrons came round and introduced themselves and chatted amicably.
Count the 4-stars toward dive/biker/roadhouse bar genuineness. Mama's has zero pretense, feels like you're having a beer in someone's garage, and I've no doubt it can get rowdy. Don't bother if you're going for swanky atmosphere or martinis. This place is no bullshit old-skool dive bar all the way, just as it should be.
