Love the new updated interior. If you want a night of live music, questionable dancing (in a fun way), and non fru-fru drinks, this is your place. The ages of folks here are mostly middle aged, not many youngsters. If there is a band, there is a $5.00 cover after 9pm. Loved that is was right downtown across from the beach - easy walking from where I used to live - no need to drive home after a few. Definitely visit since it is a landmark of Laguna Beach.

So Ive went in their twice hoping that the 2 time would be better. The first time i went in their, it was on the Union Day Parade. This drunk belly dancer starting gaining up on this other young belly dancer whom was sober may I say, and their was a huge fight outside and no one did anything. The fight lasted for ten minutes. I heard that this drunk woman is always there, which makes me not want to come back, because what if she starts wailing on me? Not good for business. The 2 time I went in was on a Wednesday, the crowd was 40-50 yr old people. The place I swear to god it smelled like urine. The floors were sticky, the stools were very lose, the bar was very loose and sticky. They had absolutely no menu's. They served peanuts and NO FOOD. No appetizers! I asked what kind of drinks they had and they said that whatever I wanted they could make, I asked for a apple martini and the idiot did not know how to make it. So I was like oookkaay can I just have a Margarita. When he gave it to me, no salt on the rim of the glass, it was green on the bottom, it didnt taste fresh, it was warm. Someone call bar rescue already and get JOHN TAFFER in here!!

Very cool bar. Fun adults - especially the ladies whom love to dance to the live music. No "douche-baggy-ness" here.

Cover is ~$5. Drinks are average ($18 for a round with tip) given it's in LB.

Had a great time with my buddy - we just sat and people watched and caught up on old times. Definitely not for the "clubbers".

If you're into dive bars then this is the place for you. They have a wide selection of alcohol, and all beers are bottled. YES bottled. Nothing on Tap.

We showed up while it was still dead and had a few drinks. After about an hour a band set up followed buy a lot of people in their mid 40s to 50s. Once the music played I could have swore all these people we're in makeup because they were getting down like they were still 20! Definitely an interesting night!

This is a really fun place! Come every Tues @8PM & enjoy Beth Fitchet Wood's AWESOME Music Set and many other top Songwriters/musicians that she lines up each week, and if you're lucky, you will get to hear Steve Wood as well! We LOVE them! It is somewhat of a concert/coffeehouse-type atmosphere on Tues nights, so bring a friend and be ready to sit back, relax and enjoy the music! Robbie is the greatest bartender of all time. Very attentive and ready to serve. Super kind! There are a lot of friendly regulars who have been coming the whole 8 or so years Beth has been doing this. I think we are coming up on our 4th year. She is an incredible musician and singer, and she's funny too; she brings a very warm, family feel to the place. Come on down! You will feel right at home! My husband and I drive all the way from Seal Beach area most Tuesdays! It's just that good!! :)

Nice atmosphere, but went to close out our tab and someone (bar tender or bouncer dorks) signed for me and had added a 30% tip! When questioned they kicked us out??? WTF??

The best place on the beach!!!! Good drinks, good music and great prices. Best part of all is the bartender Audra. She is soooooo nice and takes care of you with a smile. If not for her I would not go there on the weekends.

I liked this antique bar.
I go once in a while usually on Saturday or Sunday early afternoon for great cocktails, outstanding and fun service.
The female bartender is very attentive and hilarious at the same time!!!
That's why my friends and I always stop at the Marine room tavern.
Except for one thing, we like to play Keno, they do not have this anymore.
I wish they have a little menu for food but we cannot have everything, Right?

Anyway, if you like great cocktails, relax, listen your music, play pool, laugh and have some fun, well go early afternoon or before (Friday to Monday the best), it's always five a clock somewhere!

Went here Saturday with my husband and had a great time. Came back 2 hours later with my cousin (female) and couldn't get the bartender (female) to serve us. And when she did "get" to us, she was not in the least bit pleasant. As we're trying to order our drinks, she opted to help another patron, who only wanted change. Got up, walked out. Being a chef, I understand what customer service is.... and isn't. Won't be going back.

Stopped in here after having sushi across the street. We heard live music so we wanted to check it out. It was pretty busy for a Monday night and there were a bunch of guys up on stage jammin away. I liked the laid back vibe of this place and that everyone seemed to know each other. Didn't have any drinks since we were still full from Sake but the entertainment was cool. I would definately go back to have a few beers and listen to locals play.

We rolled into the Marine Room not knowing what to expect. In the heart of Laguna Beach, you have no idea what kind of crowd is bellying up to the bar. Inside, on a Thursday night, I found just what I wanted, plenty of stools and a long counter. Add some tables and a band playing classic rock and the scene is complete.

The female bartender smiled when she took our orders, but she had a edge. At one point, she go a little pissed and launched something against the wall ... ba-bam! No special attention or conversation on her part. And, I wasn't about to ask her how her day was going. The band playing was called "The Actors." We've seen them before at a Sunset Beach pub. They are a band that has been together for decades. It is cool to see some older guys who still appreciate rocking out.

The crowd was a mixed bag of just about every human combination you could imagine. The highlight was seeing an apparent wealthy gentleman dancing with several much younger women at the same time. If you saw the movie "Michael" where John Travolta played an Archangel, think of the dance scene in the bar. It was a clumsier version of that - "Chain of Fools" Marine Room style. Good times!

Tip - If you're looking for something to eat, or another place for cocktails, there's a Hennessey's Taven directly acorss the street.

This place is awesome, it's a local bar and has a great selection of booze. They have live bands and it has a great home feel to it. I love have there is no smoking in the bars in CA... huge plus. The night we were here.. there was a group of drunk obnoxious unpleasant people at the pool tables. Finally the bartender had enough and they were booted out. Here's a hint, if the pool table and pool sticks are not yours don't go banging them on the pool table cuz you suck at pool and miss your shot. I'm a happy drinker so it was fun to socialize with the bartender and the locals.. after all I did grow up in the area

Good dive bar to get a brew with your buddies while at the beach. Brought my friends from out of town here when visiting Laguna. The bartender Atticus was a cool dude and made a damn strong Crown & Coke. Casual environment, we walked in with what we wore to the beach and they were cool with it.

Great place to go if you are over 55. I ordered red wine which is the only thing I drink and it sucked, served in a small sticky glass. The music, October missles, was okay but very dated. The people in the bar were nice but not my crowd and way too old.

Love the Marine Room.

A casual place to go when you just want to have a drink with a buddy and maybe play some games. They have pool, the touch screen games (with Erotic Photo Hunt!), a deer hunting game, some old school game, a Lord of the Rings (I think) pinball, and pool.

Nick, the long haired, blond bartender is super nice. The drinks are cheap and the crowd demographic is mixed. I prefer to go here earlier in the week when it's not crowded and doesn't have a cover (they have a $5 cover on weekend music nights). Even though I love Marin Room, I usually don't go in on the weekends- it gets really crowded...and I'm not into crowds :)

Hopping around Laguna with my friend, we wound up here, roughly 7 jack daniels into the night... The band was just going on and kicked off a swinging blue grass set with a song about Jack Daniels. Looks like we wound up in the right place! This bar was a pretty good mix of the old and the young and the band had the place jumping. The dance floor was packed. Everyone was singing along, myself included. I'm generally an EDM girl but I swear I discovered some kind of country roots in here. Feels like a pretty local spot but a pretty mellow place to enjoy some drinks, live music, and get out of the Newport bubble.

If you're not from Laguna, and you're looking to get a shot of some local flavor -- maybe even a little rhythm and blues -- then check out the Marine Room. Always showcasing local talent, it's a great place to have a beer and listen to musicians play their hearts out. It's less about the drinks and more about the music. Let loose and enjoy the atmosphere.

Definitely not the diviest of dive bars but I love a place that play decent live music on a somewhat regular basis. Cheap (and not horrible) wine by the glass and quick, friendly bartenders. An older crowd on a Sunday night but I still danced my ass off. $5 for cover is reasonable enough if you absolutely must charge something at all. I'll hit up this little establishment again in the future!

A dive bar in the heart of Laguna Beach. A great place to knock back some drinks.

Pool tables in the back.

You can order food from Hennesseys and bring it in if you are hungry.

This place is an institution in Laguna Beach. And some of the patrons here are older than Laguna Beach.

Truly a dive bar. Great strong drinks, cheap, and it gets packed. I have never seen a bad band here, and they have some great local talent that has been playing here forever. Or close to forever.

Doesn't serve food, and get there early if you want a place to sit down.

An odd little hide-away. Walking in I felt like I was walking into a party my parents were throwing. The age gap between my friends and the patrons already there was very noted.

We headed to the back and enjoyed a round of pool and a couple beverages.
Just a bar, just a bar with some annoying acoustic music.

The people watching was SUPERB.

Every town south of the Arctic Circle has at least one bar. Many of them resemble Moe's Bar on the Simpsons, cinder block buildings with a straightforward purpose. Some of these are perfectly worthy watering holes, and bulwarks in the communities where they stand. Orange County, being Orange County, has exceptions, bars that add to the atmosphere created by the regulars by providing a lounging place that causes tourists to stop just inside the door and admire, "Wow. What a beautiful place!"

Old-World Charm - But Clean! (well, pretty clean...)

The Marine Room in Laguna Beach is such a place. Carved hardwood replicas of sailfish and marlin hang on the paneled walls. A commemorative textile is framed near the restroom. The printed handkerchief celebrates the Battle of Manila campaign of General John Pershing in 1898. Hardwood floors, warm furnishings and a well-stocked bar make the Marine Room a welcoming destination. Legendary local band The Missiles of October have entertained here for decades. The band has rocked on Sunday afternoons without a basic change in staff for sixteen years. The band has several successful self-published CDs. They would like to make the big time, but they don't want it too much. The drummer, Frank, is in his sixties and has never any job other than drumming. When bassist Jimmy divulged that his wife had cancer a few years ago, the community turned out in droves, turned their pockets inside out to help the uninsured family through their rough patch. And when community members have trouble, the Marine Room and the Missiles turn out in kind.

Dykes on Bikes (and others too)

Summer Sunday afternoons, every parking space on Ocean Avenue is filled with tricked out Harleys and custom-built bikes. But the Marine Room is no biker bar. Sunday regulars are dentists, lawyers and other such stuff, more into putting black lights into their undercarriages than getting into fights. Marine Room owner Kelly Boyd (whose grandfather fought with Pershing) is a rare Republican voice on the city council and his nephew Robbie runs the place. The biggest disputes the two get involved in are run-ins with the city over excessive noise as the expensive chrome hogs enter or leave town. Robbies' new hippy-hillbilly band, the Dupp Brothers, might give the choppers a run for their money.

Laguna Beach is a tourist town with surprising small town habits. As soon as the annual Patriots' Day parade ends in early March, the bar fills with Vietnam veterans and a kilted band of bagpipers. It's a noisy, rowdy bunch on that day. As one might expect in a very liberal town with many retired Marine homeowners and many resident full-time artists, the political discussions can become heated.

Cartoonists

In another era the Marine Room was a sanctuary for famous cartoonists. Original art by Virgil Partch (Big George), the Interlandi twins (Playboy and the New Yorker), Charles Shulz and a host of other visiting cartoonists covers one whole wall. It seems that cartoonists in the fifties had quite a lot of time on their hands. This marauding band often felt the need for sanctuary. They frequented a number of bistros in a much less populous south Orange County at the time, but the Marine Room was always a favorite. Cartoonists of today still drop in. So do well-known underwater photographer Beverly Factor, and Beth and Steve Wood of the sixties band, Honk. Beth hosts a high-powered singer/songwriter night at the Marine Room on Tuesdays, when lots of new material gets tried out publicly for the first time. Older songwriters show up too. Jack Tempchin, who wrote Peaceful Easy Feeling, came to play a few weeks ago.

For all the traffic and activity and tourists in Laguna Beach, it can be easy for a visitor to miss the underlying personality of this town of iconoclasts. Thursday nights in the winter, especially in the rain, give a unique view of the heart of the city, gathered together for a rare night when we have the town to ourselves.

If you plan to spend an evening at the Marbar as it is called, eat before you go. The alternatives are to dine on beernuts, the only food found inside, or spend quite a lot at one of the dozens of fine food establishments located within a two block radius.

Come On Down!

Main Beach Park is not a hundred steps away from the Marbar, and a moonlit stroll on the boardwalk can be perfect counterpoint to the music and conversation waiting on the other side of Coast Highway. If you are there with your main squeeze, there is nowhere on the planet more romantic than Main Beach Park under a harvest moon. If you are on your own, come by in the daytime. The eye candy is second to none.

Pretty much just a bar. Nothing too exciting about it, but nothing to hate either. Bartender was nice. No beer on tap, but had about 15 beers by the bottle. I think my Pacifico was 4 dollars, which is a little pricey for a bottle, but then again, not outrageous.

The place itself has a dive bar feel, not that there is anything wrong with that. I didn't try any food, but it was a pretty laid back experience.

I don't know what else to say, except, it's just a bar and I had a fine time in there and would probably go back if that is what I am looking for.

Marine room is one of the only true bars in laguna beach. Its divey, ya. Its dumpy, sure. But the crowd is eclectic and very kick back!! You don't get the stuffy and you don't get the tough guys very often, so its nice to come in a let loose.

They don't serve food. Stricktly a BAR for drinking.

Some things to point out:

- pool table and pinball
- drinks are stiff and cheaper than surrounding venues
- bit of older crowd on most occasions but really is a whole different box of chocolates every time you go. Never know what youre gonna get!
- GREAT LIVE MUSIC!!!!! Rock, blues and jazz and more.

cheers!

One of the three true bars in Laguna (along with Saloon and the Sandpiper).

Drink are decently priced and there is frequently a different live band playing each time (at least on the weekends when I'm normally there). The crowd is a bit older than you'll find at Oceans, Brussels, Hennessey's, etc. Definitely a hang out for the locals.

Minus one star for the stupid cover charge policy. On numerous occasions, I've been been accompanied by 3-4 beautiful girls in their mid-20s, and the door guy still insists on a cover charge for everyone.

Had a date night on Friday and went to dinner at Sorrento Grill with a couple friends. We were looking for a bar after dinner and ended up wandering into the Marine Room. We had a really fun time. it was not very crowded for a weekend, but the live band was great and the bartenders were cool. We had a chance to play a game of pool in the back too. No glitz or glamour, just a great locals dive bar with a fun laid back atmosphere.

Tuesdays at Laguna Beach Marine Room - undiscovered (and quite phenomenal) singers, songwriters

For more than 4 years now, the renowned Marine Room Tavern in Laguna Beach has been serving up budding songwriters and undiscovered crooners in its Tuesday Night Songwriter's Showcase.

In contrast to the Marine Room's standard fare of fun and rowdy live bands and fans, the Songwriter's Showcase tends to be a mellower event with acoustic or single-instrument play ... all the better to hear some of the most tremendous singing and songwriting talent in the area.

When you've finished your Taco Tuesday evening at the White House, wander two blocks down to the Marine Room on Ocean Avenue between 8 and 11 to listen in on an ever-rotating bill of great talent.

Not just anyone can take over the stage. The event is organized by Beth Fitchet Wood, the well-loved singer and guitarist of the early '70s "Honk" band and the now-popular "The Girls" band. A singer since the age of 3, Beth thought it would be a great idea to give bracing new talent a turn in the spotlight. Singers and songwriters must possess at least a self-produced CD of their work and need to "apply" through Beth at her web site, www. http://BethFitchetWood.c…

Each Tuesday begins with a 30-45 minute set from Beth, herself, and the stage then opens to feature 3-4 scheduled acts. Crowd sizes vary but you'll usually be able to find yourself a chair or a seat at the elbow-worn bar. What the event lacks in American Idol hoopla it makes up for in sheer, unbridled talent.

How to find the Songwriter's Showcase at the Marine Room Tavern:
From Laguna's Main Beach (the first big beach at Broadway and PCH), travel a block south on PCH to Ocean Avenue. You'll see the Tavern's green awning right there on the left side of the street.

From my blog, http://www.LagunaBeachBe…

I loved the atmosphere of the Marine Room Tavern: great live music, locals singing and dancing, and friendly bartenders. This place is covered with MILFs-- no joking. Everyone is in relaxed clothes, no one is uptight, and everyone is dancing. Even the bartenders are so relaxed that they're wearing sandals. EVERYONE wears sandals! lol Great times.

I gave five stars because of the music. Beth Wood, of HONK
fame, runs a singer/songwriter night every Tuesday. It really
is a labor of love. She corrals all kinds of people to play
each week and more often than not, it knocks my socks off!
Beth is no slouch herself and starts off the night doing a set
of her own. She is a wonderful musician and songwriter. She
has different people play each week, mostly local musicians.
Check out her website for the weekly posting, come on down
and check it out. It's the best game in town on Tuesday nights
and it's free!

A locals bar in a tourist town. Clientele: 40-50 something year old men with facial hair and their girlfriend of the week. Bikers, locals in flip flops, and the forever-singles. Pretentious OC-ers need not apply!

Seriously though, it's all locals, but really good people. Bartenders are always nice, they have live music (Missiles of October used to play there a lot, not sure if they still do), a pool table, and a makeshift dance floor. There is no food there so grab something at Hennesey's across the street before hand but leave room for beer.
