We stopped in here for Father's Day, and ended up just getting some beers. The selection in this place is awesome. One of the better draugh lists I've seen in the area.
The only thing that kind of stunk, is we stopped in during the Jazz brunch. Not really feeling breakfast and beer, so we didn't eat, and by the number of people in there, seems like most people feel the same.
Great location. Unfortunately, you don't eat the location. You eat the food. Or try to anyways. First of all, it is a pub. So I figured a nice craft beer and a gourmet burger would go down good. Ahhh  -  we don't have burgers. WTF??? So I order some nuts as a starter. They are literally a right out of the beer nut can. Why not throw me a bag of tostitos and a can of cheese?
Great location, but your menus sucks.
So I loved the barley pub before it moved as well- but I went to their new location tonight to try out the food.
First off great space, I know they worked VERY hard on it and it really shows. I hated the old place that used to be there and really wanted to applaud how much work they did redoing that whole area.
Anyways I unfortunately did not have any alcohol this time- but I had a burger and my fiancé had the pesto pizza. My burger was cooked PERFECTLY- albeit a tiny bit bland. I think If I could suggest possibly adding just one or two spices into the beef I really would call it the best burger in Dover. My fiances pizza also looked incredible.
I think I'll be back but may order something different with a bit more umph to it-- but I recommend everyone come in and try this place because I still think they have a great atmosphere, drinks, prices and food.
I wrote a review of the new location of the Barley Pub on 1/23/13, giving it one star due to lots of issues. Since there is a new Barley Pub page for the new location and the reviews did not transfer and I want to outline what happened here. After I wrote the review (seen below) Scott M. wrote this feedback to me, "I am very sorry for your bad experiences at our new location. We want very badly to do a better job. We also know that we have not yet been able to master all of our newly learned skills. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Â Cheers! -Scott.
We went in last night with some friends to grab some beers. We all ordered and there was no seating so we all stood around near the bar. We were very obviously in the way as waitresses were irritated trying to get by us. So we then tried to stand closer to the bar to stay out of the traffic area. That of course did not fly as that is an area for people to order drinks so they asked us to move near the pool table. We were standing near a table that had some papers and what not on it. A couple of us had our drinks on the table, but nobody was sitting at it. Either way, "Scott M" local business owner, rudely came over told us that is the management table and to move. A friend nicely joked, "but there are not tables for us." and he responded, "well why don't I just order a table for you right now" as he laughed and brushed us aside, as he sat down to chat with a coworker showing her something on his phone. He had no regard for the patrons of his establishment. I have never once in my life seen a business owner treat customers this way. Especially a business that everyone just "loves" as being a "local watering hole". If this rude and ill-mannered mans bar is what people consider a friendly local watering hole than I guess the standards are pretty low in Dover.

We just moved locally a few months ago and were really excited the empty corner space was going to be the new revamped Barley Pub. We went a couple days after it opened and of course there were some issues. For example the hostess wanted us to wait, and successfully did make some people wait, in the cold vestibule for a table vs. letting them in to get a drink at the bar. There was lots of confusion among the whole place it seemed. We understood new place, new menu they needed time to sort it all out. We have been back 4 or 5 times since and each time seems to be more and more disappointing. We went over the holidays with our family for drinks and a snack and sat at one of the high skinny tables. A waitress came over and started to take our order, then said actually I am off in a few I will have the new waitress come over.... 10 minutes later we had to flag down another waitress. It just seems to hard to give them business. We have most recently gone and sat at the bar. I understand that the bartenders are nice and friendly, because of some of the other reviews and I see them being nice and friendly perhaps to the regulars. Each time we have sat at the bar it is like they could care less we are there and will get to us when they can and they are always just meh when it comes to friendliness.
Now, getting to our latest visit. I saw on the Barley Pub facebook page it was Ladies night on Tuesdays. We went in, sat at the bar and the bartender came over eventually. Asked what we wanted and just that being said sets me off. It is ladies night, there are specials, I am a lady... TELL ME THIS. Do not make me ask you. So, what do I do.. I ask. I wanted wine and they don't have specials on wine on ladies night anymore so regardless I ordered a glass. My husband ordered a beer that came in a tulip glass, probably around 13 oz., and we looked up later it was a weak beer anyhow at 4.3% and was $5.50. As soon as we ordered we realized I should have ordered the beer as all beer was $2 for ladies and he should have ordered the wine, oh well! We figured a nice bartender would see that and adjust it on the bill. Now getting to my wine. Sure, I understand that sometimes your wine pour looks deceiving because the glasses are really large so it looks as though you hardly got any. I am fine with that. Not only did my wine pour look like that it was even laughable, it took me 3-4 sips for it to be gone. Honestly, took me 4 minutes to drink... a glass of wine! The bartender came over and we asked for the check and she said she thought we were hanging out longer. I said well the glass of wine was the smallest I have ever seen and so it is gone and we are leaving. Instead of stepping it up and being kind or polite to your customer she shrugged it off and said that is just looks like that because the glasses. I said well OK, but you saw the time it took for me to drink it and I did not chug the wine. And of course we got the bill and full charge for the beer. We have no desire to go back there, which is a shame.
I enjoyed a great lunch at the new Barley Pub location very recently.
This downtown bar offers around 30 beers on tap and an interesting pub food menu. There's seating at the bar plus several long communal high top tables, table seating along the windows, and a pool table in the back area.
Though not extensive, the food menu offerings include sandwiches, burgers, salads, small appetizers, pizzas, a few dinner entrees (after 5PM) (pork & barley pot pie, truffle roasted quail, lobster thermidor, fettuccini & mushroom dijonnaise), and a few desserts too. They also have a Bluegrass Sunday brunch menu served 10AM-3PM, as well. Most items are priced under $12.
I stopped in here over the weekend and found an open table next to a window. There is only one server running the floor, so it took a few moments to place my order.
For a starter, the Gnocchi ($5.50) served in a bowl had soft potato dumpling pasta in a roasted garlic cream sauce with applewood smoked bacon, which was smooth and not too rich.
For lunch, the Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich ($7) was one of the best chicken sandwiches I've enjoyed in NH, homemade and very fresh! The tender juicy piece of boneless chicken was hand breaded in a very crispy coating & deep fried and topped with a crunchy sweet honey mustard cole slaw on a soft flour bakery bun. The house pickle spear on the side was very good and not vinegary. The side of House potato Chips (add $1) were very crunchy, not greasy and had a slightly salty taste.
The service was slightly delayed, as the the solo server was doing his best to accommodate the moderately busy bar floor serving food and drinks. The next table ordered the beer sampler (8 different beers in small glasses), which is what I would very likely order on a future visit with my buddy.
I would definitely return to The Barley Pub just for the Southern Fried Chicken sandwich with some cold beers!
