First and last time I will go there, someone gave me a gift cert. for 25.00 went in and orderd 19.00 in food and they told me that the 25.00 cert doesn't cover tax so I would have to pay the tax. so I was like hummmm ,Ok whatever so I paid the tax ,they also told he that the tax is not included we you purchase the gift cert , which I knew was not true because I had the receipt and it has tax on it. and to make matters worse they kept the change out of the 25.00 cert and the bill was only 19.00 not including tax that I paid for separate. Great way to run a biss.

Have been going maybe once a month, pretty good. The service on Wednesday night was superb, I have no complaints. The pizzas are very good, the burgers have a high quality of meat and are very thick. Very nice people that try hard.

Food: we ordered the Blue cheese Nachos, Philly cheese Steak sandwich and pizza, and BBQ chicken Pizza. They were very tasty, but WAY overpriced. $11 personal sized pizza!!

Beer: in San Diego it is sad to see such a poor selection of beer. And for such an un-imaginative selection, it is SUPER overpriced!

    Service: our server was great.

If they had Competitive prices and I would have given 5 stars...

I went to McCarter's last night for my brothers birthday. Our waitress wall Kelly O. Well, because of Kelly's horrible customer service I will NOT be returning there. The place was dead (that's a sign!) and we came in with about 8 other people. She took our orders and when she brought out the food, she got my order wrong. She had an "eat it anyways" attitude when I told her that was not a philly cheese steak, it ended up being a different sandwich filled with 5lbs of mayo.  Then she said "well if you want I can get you the right one" in a snotty tone. I just said Never mind because it wasn't worth it. I didn't understand how she could be so confused when there was literally no one else in the place. After that she wouldn't even look me in the eye when asking if I needed another beer. when I got my bill I was going to tip her anyway. I work customer service, and have experience in fine dining. I know how important tips are. She forgot to add my appetizer to my bill and noticed about 10min after I had payed. Instead of saying "It's fine, we got this one. We got your order wrong and we're sorry" she came up to me handing me another bill with a rude attitude. I was pissed. I crossed out her tip at that point. Worst customer service I have ever had. I will never go back there.

I called 3 bars in advance on a Saturday afternoon to inquire if they were showing the 2013 NBA playoffs (some bars prefer other sports). I chose McCarter's because the friendliest and perkiest employee answered the phone.

McCarter's offers salvation from the standard 1 TV dive bar scene in East County.  The place looks Immaculate and has at least 20 HD TV's with open and unobstructed views t watch the games.

In need of some sustenance to absorb our beverages we ordered:

BLEU CHIP NACHOS ($7) - Kettle style potato chips topped with melted bleu cheese sauce & bacon. Great appetizer with a Hefeweizen.

SPINACH & BLEU CHEESE STEAK ($16.00) - 10 oz. Angus sirloin steak topped with sautéed spinach & bleu cheese crumbles. Served with seasonal grilled vegetables & your choice of roasted red potatoes or french fries. The steak was good but could have been great if the sautéed spinach and bleu cheese where not on top of the steak. The veggies on top steamed the meat and killed the exterior crispiness of the steak.

TUSCAN SHRIMP & PASTA ($14.00) - Sautéed shrimp served on a bed of angel hair pasta tossed in wine & cream sauce with mushrooms, shallots, garlic, basil & sun dried tomatoes. Served with garlic bread. This dish was surprisingly good! Nice size shrimp in a light and creamy sauce. I would order this again.

With a diverse selection of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers and entrees, McCarter's serves some good food and drink, all in a casual and comfortable atmosphere.

I have to deduct a star because they are kid-friendly. I was a tad annoyed listening to crying babies and runaway toddlers.

If you think this place has the best chicken wings in San Diego, you are in luck. You can purchase these same wings (actually boneless chicken tenders) in any grocery store in the frozen food section. Toss 'em in the microwave and you will be in heaven as that's what is served here. I really wanted to like this place as it is so close but would never order food here again. Very standard (although limited) beer selection and it's a very nice location. Service was friendly although easily distracted and therefore a little slow. Would stop in again for a beer (since not much else in this neighborhood) but not for food and probably wouldn't stay long.

Oh McCarters I want to give you more stars.  Friendly owners and staff, great looking bar, lots of TVs.  Please, please, please do something about the food.  People will come!  This place is right in my neighborhood but every time I think about going there, I think about what I would eat and I go somewhere else.  Good for drinks and sports.  When they fix the kitchen, I'll be back.

I really don't understand any of these bad reviews.  We discovered McCarter's a couple months back and now go every Wednesday for lunch.  We have never been disappointed!  Melanie has our drinks on the bar for us before we even get through the door.   My husband has the Chicken Wings every week.  They are by far the best Chicken Wings in San Diego!  And all the sauces!  Wow!  I typically get the Steak Sandwich which is the lunch special (as are the wings).  It is insanely good!  Again, the sauce is unbelievable.  Comes with super great hot french fries.  The place is clean and everyone working there has been great and personable.

So three cheers for McCarter's!  I'm looking forward to trying everything on the menu!  And at their prices I intend to!

I've been to this place several times because it is close, but these guys really need to work on some things!  The people are nice, and it's a great place if you want to have a quick drink at a neighborhood bar.  BUT, the food is horrible, and i've tried several different items on the menu.  I have never had a good meal there, EVER!!  It's just really really bad.  Then i went there a couple of nights ago while the playoff games were on, and they had the volume cranked all the way up.  It was so overwhelming we left after one drink, and went down the street.  And lastly, here's an idea.......  ACCEPT AMERICAN EXPRESS !!!  Oh My God you are a restaurant!!!  The owner is really SO cheap that he cant accept this card??  Please, your drinks are very expensive for a neighborhood bar, you can afford it!

We recently moved to the neighborhood and were really excited about having a place to watch football games, eat and drink, but my husband and I have both been fairly underwhelmed. Beer is good, food is ok, but some things seem a bit overpriced or just not that great for the price. I'll never order the Irish Twins appetizer again. BUT, the service is good and if you're just looking for a decent place to hang out. I think it's ok.

Really want to give this place more than 2 stars, but it's just not meant to be.  I do like the beer because it is always nice and cold, and the customer service has always been pretty good for me.

But let's talk about the negatives.  Food.  Terrible.  Has the menu ever changed?  Don't think so.  I have tried about a half a dozen things here, and I would be surprised if anything is actually fresh (not frozen).  Want a quesadilla with hot sauce?  The only hot sauce that they have is in a bottle, Chollula I believe.  Come on people, this is southern California.  I guarantee if you asked the guys in the kitchen to make a good salsa or hot sauce they could do it.

Just like all the other reviews....I really want to like this place but it's just not working out.

Chance after chance I gave this place.  It's close to home so I really wanted this new relationship to work.  I was patient while they waited for their full license to sell booze.  I thought it was cute that I had to explain how to make a cocktail or wait for the ONE bartender to help me.  But I made excuses for the poor service.  I overlooked the lack of WiFi, jukebox, or any other entertainment.  I even stomached the many drab items on the limited menu.  But then Football started...

If you're a Charger fan and don't care about any other team, this place will do.  But the Jack-hole with the remote controlling the 17 TVs is less than democratic.

If your car breaks down in San Carlos you might want to step in and have a beer.  But other than that...

I've been here several times I've the last year, mainly to have a beer and watch a game. The food is mediocre, at best, and drink prices a little high for this neighborhood ($5.50 for a pint of local microbrews). Then today I came in and my Stone IPA was now $5.98!  The bartender said they're now adding tax. What bars charge an odd amount like $5.98??  Oh, and the bartender didn't even bother with giving me change from $6 cash! The bigger question is how long will customers put up with that pricing. At $6 per pint, this customer will not!

This place is the worst sports bar ever!

The food is horrible and over priced, service is eh never mind it's just as bad.
When you ask them if they can put a game on their reply is rude saying "They are going to watch other games" another words what the employees would like to see.

crappy food, service, and customer service.

I advise people in that area never to go there.

For La Mesa, this place is pretty cool...the fact that it's not a chain is huge! The vibe is pretty typical for a sports bar...could be better, could be worse. I was there during Happy Hour and the tacos were a good deal for a couple bucks. Service was good...anybody who can handle a tableful of eight indecisive women without getting snippy is a good server. Our (female) server was great. This isn't a place I would go out of my way for, but if I was in the area and the hour was happy, I might stop by for a taco...or two...or three.

Super cool owners make an ordinary sports bar feel anything but ordinary. There are a bunch of TVs turned to whatever is popular at the moment. That means if the bar is empty and you wanted to wanted an obscure ping pong tournament, I bet they'd throw it on for you.

The local beers are awesome. The bloody marys are a force to be reckoned with. The food is solid.

It's a great local place to grab a bite and/or watch some TV.

I so very badly want McCarter's to be a quality establishment, but it isn't.  We live close by, and have visited on 4 separate occasions, at different times, on different days, but one thing is always consistent - it's disappointing.

The open space lends itself to lots of flexibility in usage.  So what do they decide to do?  Have beer pong.  Seriously?  That's what people go to PB for.  Beer pong does not lend itself to a welcoming vibe for people who are out of college (the people who actually HAVE money to spend) - it literally leaves me with a cold feeling in that bar.

Although the menu looks SO promising, the food is significantly below average. It's the kind of food you don't mind when you have had quite a few, because, well, by that time you are drunk and fried food is way more palatable.  McCarter's has a nice kitchen - how hard can it be to produce a competitive, satisfying menu with fresh ingredients?

The service is above average.  There is one guy that is always hustling behind the bar to get drinks out.  But some of the wait staff can be a little unprofessional as far as flirting with customers, to the point that they forget other customers.

And the prices are pretty steep.  I don't mind spending money when I go out, but I consistently walk away from McCarter's feeling that I have not gotten my money's worth.  An everyday price of $4.50 for Domestic Drafts?  No pitchers, but there is beer pong?  Fried, inconsistent dishes at a place that claims a quality menu?

I get the sense that McCarter's wants to make the customers happy, but is suffering an identitiy crisis.  What kind of place are you trying to be, McCarter's?

Nice sports bar atmosphere. Appetizer sampler was a combination of terrible food but the beer was cold. I will be back but not when I'm hungry

McCarter's is passable but nothing to get excited about. The space is wide open with a generic sports theme that has been done much better elsewhere. The booth and table seating is not terribly comfortable. The music is loud and not well suited for the clientele or the atmosphere. The menu is pretty thin and not terribly interesting. We started with chips and salsa which at $6 seemed pretty hefty considering the small portion of salsa (small dish of green and pico de gallo). The burgers were OK. Large and flavorful, though mine was ordered med. rare and didn't have a bit of red in the center. Fries and onion rings were freshly cooked. Beer came in a frosted mug. Service at the bar was friendly and attentive.

If I owned this place, I'd target a different demographic other than the 20-30 something singles they seem to be going after. The neighbor is mostly families and middle-aged couples who are looking for value, comfort and decent dining experience. Lose the top 40 dance music, find a cook with some creativity and skill and warm the place up.

My family and I ate at McCarter's and we found the service was terrible and the food was even worse.  Our waiter was not trained well nor was he familiar with the menu.  We had to ask for napkins three times before he brought them.  The menu was limited and our food was tasteless and not what we expected.  My daughter's burger was burnt and my sandwich was one of the worst I have ever eaten.  I would not recommend this establishment to anyone.  I hate writing bad reviews, but this one is accurate.

I've driven by this bar for a couple years thinking that it was just a dive bar. The first time I went in there I was pleasantly surprised. They had a good happy hour and I loved their blue cheese potato chip "nachos".

My family and I went again yesterday and my steak and the Sam Adams cider hit the spot. Our server was great and even better my 5 year old loved the pulled pork sliders!

Contrary to what Ryan H claims, this isn't "a Raiders bar." In fact, a short talk with the owner revealed that there really is no rhyme or reason as to what sports fans decide to show up. They go out of their way to be very, very accommodating to everyone. Proof of this?

What's the last suburban bar you went into that had at least one TV turned to a soccer channel in a NFL/MLB town?

The owners of the place are super cool, as I was trying to convey up above. We cruised in around 11pm with a group of six, including a 6 month old, well behaved baby and they sprang into action to set us up a table and get some chairs together.

When's the last time you saw a bar staff happy about a baby in the place?

They filled drink orders extremely quickly and have a good selection of local brews as well as the normal mainstream brews you'd expect in any bar. I recommend a bloody mary as they're incredibly spicy and made with a house made mix. Get one, get one, get one.

No hipsters, no bros, plenty of sports options, good beer, good liquor and quite the food menu. The place is clean, spacious and used to be a bike shop way back in the day. Now it's probably the coolest bar, cleanest bar and most well kept, best serviced bar in the Lake Murray area. If I lived over there I wouldn't have any issues with calling this my favorite neighborhood haunt.

Here it is. My first Yelp review. I wonder how many Yelper's opened their account because of a bad experience. I'll bet it was a lot of you, am I right?

Here I was at McCarter's grill, getting more and more pissed, and then the [manager? owner? random lady pretending to be in charge of something?] mentioned she was going to "have to read about this on Yelp." Well, I can take a hint! Done! Account opened, bitching commenced...

Location was convenient for... where I was that night. I guess if you find yourself in San Carlos, and, say, the biggest game in Aztec history is going to be on, the location is brilliant. The bar itself is nice, has high, lofty ceilings, lots of televisions. Seriously, PLENTY of televisions, which causes some problems that are simply way too complicated for the [manager? owner? random lady pretending to be in charge of something?] to handle, as we shall see. There are plenty of types of seats (bar, larger booths, smaller booths, tables that can be arranged for larger or smaller groups, etc), so this is nice. All in all, when you walk in, it stands to reason your experience will be fine.

There is no tinting on the windows, so the late afternoon glare is a little much, but certainly not a deal-breaker.

We arrived early, at least an hour before the game, because we wanted seats. Lots of people do that sort of thing, you know, showing up early and putting tables together, etc. A lot of people had done just that. There were tables with two people holding six to eight empty chairs, maybe more. So you can imagine our surprise when the  [manager? owner? random dude pretending to be in charge of something?] asked us if the ONE open chair we had was being held for someone.

Yes. My wife. Who is on her way. On crutches.

No matter, off he goes with our chair. I look around the room. Mostly empty chairs, being held by one or two people at every table.

So here it is, McCarter's, your 'FUCK YOU,' #1.

And the game begins. If you've ever watched the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, AKA "March Madness," you are probably aware that there are often more than one game going at the same time. It's MADNESS, I tell you! We asked the  [manager? owner? random lady pretending to be in charge of something?] if the other game could be put on one of the televisions. We were told yes, but it never happened. We asked again, and she told us that the other patron's would get mad, because everyone was there to watch the Aztec game. Seriously? I WAS THERE TO WATCH THE AZTEC GAME! Do you think that no one who is at a bar watching the tourney has a bracket filled out somewhere? No one is curious as to what is happening in the other game? You are supposed to be a sports bar. How the hell do you handle the NFL season, what with all those games going on at the same time as the Chargers? Before you think I'm being unreasonable, please see the picture I am posting. The one with four televisions all within two feet of each other on the same wall. Airing the same thing. Really, McCarter's, do you think that someone would have complained if you you put the other game on one of those four televisions?

Here it is McCarter's, your 'FUCK YOU,' #2.

Well, I'm out of steam, but quickly, before I go... Bacon-Cheese Fries, in a word: awful. Seriously, how do you fuck up Bacon, Cheese, and Fries? Boneless wings: not great, but not bad by any stretch of the imagination. If you get these, you'll be okay. Beer: cold, but second of three Stellas was mysteriously different tasting than the other two. I thought it was the fries ruining my palate, but then the third tasted like the first. Weird.

So, to sum up, can't really recommend the place, but if you are in San Carlos the next time there's a big game, and expect the worst, you might be alright.

Went here recently to watch some of the NCAA tourney and had a good time.  Love that there was some sports bars options in La Mesa.  They turned the sound on for us upon asking - so we could listen to the game! Yeah!!!!! Big plus!!!!

Atmosphere was good; service was good; menu was good; food was good and so was the beer. The HH looks good.

The place is really pretty large - good viewing - many flat screen HD TVs.  There are windows on the street side of the place that open if the weather is nice.

Overall - will go there again - hoping to be a regular.  La Mesa needs more sports bars - this beats Hooleys re viewing.  We liked that they accomodated us on the sound.

Fish & chips was good; so were the chips (real chips!) with blue cheese yummy!!!  Also free wifi!

I moved into the area from LA about ten months ago.  I found McCarter's on my way to the Post Office.  It is a typical sports pub with appetizers, a light menu (pizza, fish/chips, burgers) and televisions for watching various events.

First off - there are plenty of televisions and they are well-spaced around the bar and around the rest of the restaurant.   All of them support HD and mgmt is good at getting games/events you are interested in on a screen you can see easily.

Second - beer selection is fine, and prices are a square deal with various Hpy-Hr specials - but if you want fifty micro-brews, stick with the Main Tap in El Cajon.   Not the McCarter's is bad, just that Main Tap is more like the gigantic public library approach to micro-brews.

Food - menu is not huge, but I've worked my way through the burgers and pizza's and they are fine.  Same story as the beers - this place is not supposed to be Mr A's, but is a sports pub.  So they are supposed to have good burgers, fries, appetizers, etc and they do.

$$$ - have never paid cash and have always used my card and have never had a double charge in about twenty trips there in 2010.

Mgmt/Staff - mgmt is there on a regular basis and friendly.  Staff has never been a problem as far as my treatment goes.  I usually have only one person or a very small group, so have never had occasion to see how a big crowd gets treated, so no comment on that.

I can walk to/from, drinks/food are not free, but decent.  I can see watching sports there for as long as I live within their area.

Unfortunately my most recent trip to McCarters was not as pleasant as my last. In fact I may never step foot in the place again! The place...cool, the food...ok, the service...terrible! I have sat at the bar and the service there is pretty good, however the waitresses on the other hand are not.

Not only did I sit there with an empty glass on more than one occasion but what should have cost me $34 has me out of $108 for the Labor day weekend!! The waitress rang the entire bill (which should have been split cash/card) entirely on my card. So rather than bring back the cash to the table, the bill was "credited' back onto my debit card...which takes 3-5 days to be available to me. Then she rings my portion, and somehow rings it up AGAIN! And the second charge I knew nothing about until I checked my bank account the next day and I had to call to get it fixed. So now they essentially have put a hold on $108 of MY dollars!

Absolutely ridiculous! Offer to get meal comped? No. Offer to buy a round of drinks? Yes however I was drinking water! No thanks I don't need you to comp my water.

    Very disappointed and shocked!

If you do go bring cash and make sure to count your change back!

Last night was my second visit to McCarter's... and I probably won't be going back.

The food was good.  I had fish and chips (can't really mess that up) along with their house salad.  We also shared their Bleu Chip Nachos which were very delicious!

Our waitress, on the other hand, was terrible.  I should've been able to predict how our night was going to go when I asked what their "seasonal" Sam Adams was.  I ask, "Is it the Summer Ale?" Waitress, "No.  It's the Autumn Ale.  It's September, it's not Summer anymore."  Okay... without asking anymore questions, I just go with the seasonal Sam Adams.

We were there for 3+hours... just chatting and celebrating a birthday.  Our waitress didn't seem to know what to do with us.  Our drinks went dry and she'd come over to clear plates, including mine while I was still eating off of it.  The place wasn't very busy, so I'm not sure why this waitress's service was so lackluster.

At the end of our evening she brings us our bill.  I pay half in cash, while another paid for the other half on her debit card.  Not too hard.  We've done this plenty of times... at other places, with a different waitress.  Our waitress rings the debit card up for the full amount... then realizes she forgot to apply the cash before ringing up the debit card... so she applies the cash and rings up the debit card again.

We had no idea what was going on until a manager, Pat, comes to our table to explain what had happened and offers to "buy" us a round of drinks.  We decline.  After Pat walks away our waitress starts on with some story about how someone (probably her) loaded the paper in the machine backwards so it wasn't printing out a receipt and that's why the card was rang up so many times.  Whatever.  She didn't know what she was doing, it's obvious.  If the service throughout the evening wasn't so bad, no problem... but the service was horrible and this mistake just sealed the deal.

If you do visit McCarter's try the Bleu Chip Nachos... take some cash... and look out for a short waitress, brown eyes, with long blonde hair - not to be mistaken for the tall, slim waitress(?) with long blonde hair who brought us our food and was very nice.

I love having a place in the hood, but I continue to drive elsewhere (locally K&B Wines) when I want a beer. The owner of McCarters seems to be ignoring the fact San Diego is the brew capital of the US. We have been featured in major magazines accross the country. I think there are 37 breweries in the county now, yet I see maybe two local taps at McCarters?  I would like to see them take one of their rows of taps and convert them to all local brews. They have a start with the Ballast Point Yellowtail they already have. The next step would be to invite local brewers to do tastings during Happy Hour on a weekday night. They do it everywhere around the city. Whether it is Hamiltons or Obriens or whereever, featured beer nights around SD are always packed and guess what...drink beer....must eat.  Time to freshen it up a notch.

Finally got around to trying McCarter's this past Friday (I live less than a mile away and drive by it almost daily!).  Got to say that I was pleasantly surprised.  Staff was friendly, food was tasty, and I liked owner's choice of background music.

I really feel that McCarter's is still a work in process (I don't know that they have any "signature" item(s)), but it is a great addition to our Navajo-San Carlos neighborhood.  I would love to see the owners try some evenings with live music featuring local artists and an eclectic mix of jazz, blues, blue grass, folk, singer songwriters, etc.

Visitors to McCarter's are faced with just one challenge; Parking!

I'm definitely looking forward to my next visit.

After reading all of the great yelp reviews, I must say I was really surprised with the mediocre experience I had here.  The food was really, really eh.  I had a cheese burger and fries, and at first I was excited about the ciabbata bread option for the burger, but in reality it tasted like my burger was between two ends of wonder bread.  The burger itself and the fries were pretty tasteless.

As for the service, one thing they have going for them is their pleasant wait staff, however, for a mostly empty bar, the pace of the service was glacial, and several drink orders were incorrect.  I doubt I'll be venturing out here again...

Finally!  I great bar in East County.  When I say bar, I mean the literal bar.  It's gorgous.  A tall dark brown alter to the beer gods.

I remember when this place used to be square pan pizza back in the day.  My sister and I fought over Pacman.  I won.  And I felt like a winner again just walking in this place.

When you first walk in this place looks very East Coast. Very open and friendly vibe! Bar's in the center of the place. Great place to chill out with friends and shoot the shit. They have a bunch of Flat Panels to watch the game.

    Overall very fun place!

I've been here twice now, and I enjoyed my experience both times.  My fiance and I were really excited to see a nice bar open up right in the neighborhood.  We went for a Padres game and were pleasantly surprised at how big the place actually is, and how many TVs they had.  Both times we've gone to catch the Padres game, but we've also been able to multitask with other MLB games and hockey, or multiple football games.  This atmosphere is obviously a dream come true for most sports fanatics!  The service is good.  Our waitresses always come by to check in, see if we need refills, etc.  The food came quickly.  The food is alright.  They have some interesting things on their menu, but they're worth a shot.

I'm definitely always trying to find a good reason to come here.  We want it to be a great neighborhood bar, and I think it'll really grow.

My boyfriend and I finally got a chance to walk over for happy hour the other night. Prices are all reasonable. Service was great.

Decor was very well done. I loved the old Sports Illustrated magazines throughout. According to my boyfriend, the men's restroom was lined with the swimsuit editions and they all belonged to the owner. Absolutely loved the ambiance.

I'm very happy to have a place within walking distance with good food and beer. This place would be great for anyone - watching the game, drinks with friends, dinner with the family.  A great addition to the neighborhood!

I went to this place  around 10pm on a Saturday with a friend and felt invisible.  We were sitting at a table on the side and were wondering if the people sitting on the barstools wearing McCarters shirts were employees or regulars. This place sucked.  The whole night I was so f***in thirsty. Only after flagging down a barback who looked lost, was I able to get the attention of the loopy bartender, who took 10 MORE minutes to get my friend a drink.  After receiving my Bud Light I came to the conclusion that the people wearing McCarter's shirts DID actually work at the place. No service, no friendly welcome, and no beer equals me not coming back.

I wish I would have felt more welcomed into this obviously exclusive east county enclave (as if).

P.S. For all of you posting 5 or 4 stars, consider the nightlife of this place. Hopefully you'll get the "warm welcome" I too received. Then come back and give it a 5.
