I'm ok giving this place one star because I thought my food was pretty good (however that wasn't the opinion of everyone in my party) but I would be happy giving it no stars. The inside was sweltering in the middle of summer so either there is no a/c or they decided not to run it even though there was clearly a need. There was seating outside, so that was a good option and much cooler. The service was absolutely terrible, almost the worst I have ever encountered. Our waitress was rude and horribly impatient. There was a table full of overly intoxicated people seated next to us and during the middle of our dinner one of those individuals came up to us and in an EXTREMELY condescending tone said that we needed to move our vehicle immediately so that the owner's van parked in an alleyway could get out, that it was the vehicle of her designated driver. My mom, unhappily, walked away from her dinner and moved our car, and that van never moved from the alley. Our service actually diminished further and by the end of our dinner we were all very unhappy, felt very uncomfortable and were more than ready to leave. A very sad disappointment, especially since the place came recommended and we were visiting from out of state.

Really greasy food.  The fish inside the breading was good but the greasy breading made it taste really poor.  Portions are good but I feel so sick from the grease I can't give more than 2 stars

Lovely outdoor seating area!  However, the food is hit or miss.  Although, the appetizers are usually a safe bet.  Drinks are strong and a good variety of beer on tap.

Overall, a solid pub.  I was really impressed with the fish and chips. The batter was crispy and seasoned well.  The caesar was neatly overdressed, and the artichoke dip burger was satisfyingly over the top in beef grease and cheese.  Wash it wall down with a great bear on tap, and you have a wonderfully lazy afternoon.

Good food. Straight forward, irish flare.  Salad was above average, nice dressing choice.  Comfortable restaurant, a little smokey near the bar.
I am looking forward to a return visit.

Seems like a place that would be the go to for people from Michigan city, but its really hard to get past smoking inside the bar.

The chili had clearly been microwaved, and not log enough, at that -- it came out at maybe 100 degrees.  Blech...

High point: they has bells two hearted. Which is good enough for three stars in my book.

My favorite local pub.  Love the Irish Spring Rolls and a very good ruben.

Good food and beer but don't come at lunch looking for real Irish food. Sadly they suffer the same problem as lots of Irish pubs in that their beers are Irish but the food mostly isn't. Their Sully sandwich was tasty as are their bangers and mash. The atmosphere is good and they have a nice patio. I just wish I could more Irish food in the middle of the day.

We were headed to the Lighthouse when I spotted this place. I wanted something unique and I got it. It is a tavren in an old house. I keep forgetting that you can still smoke in Indiana. How Rude! We were seated right away. It had a bunch of locals in it, that were having a blast that had continued from the night before. The menu had a lot of fancy things that you would not expect from a pub in Michigan City. I had a feeling that I should stick with something easy. I was correct. The 7oz burger was really tasty. But they forgot to melt the cheese on mine. My friend had the same thing, but they melted his? The seasoned fries tasted like Dorito sticks. Not to my taste but they were gobbled up. I did notice that this place was spotless. Including the washroom. My only problem as with the dumb waiter. They did all the cooking on the second floor so they had to pull it up and down. The rope that they used looked like something you had your dog tied to in the back yard. Then I looked at our waitress bringing our food with the same hands that she just yanked with. Not very appetizing!

Like Garnet S. mentions in her review. I too was headed to Michigan City and needed a dinner place to meet a good friend. It's hard to find reviews for this town on any website and most of the finer dining places are outside of town and closed on Sundays. Unless of course you want to eat at the Blue chip casino. (Bleh)

Driving from the outlet mall, McGinnis was within sight, filled with mostly senior customers it looked homely enough for a good time. When I walked in with my gal pal you could hear a pin drop. I have to guess that they don't see many colored people or Indian people. Or maybe they were wondering if we were an interracial couple; who knows. Weirdos. I hate that bumble fuck Egypt look some distant towns give to outsiders. This is Michigan city, not Las Vegas, Co, some random town in a booney place of a small populated state.

Our waitress looked just like Veronica from the Archie Comics, I wanted to take her home with me, but couldn't. Moving on, we both had the Guinness stew with Irish soda bread. Excellent, right amount of potatoes and meat and a tasty stew indeed. Soda bread had raisins in it, which I didn't favor much, but my gap pal said it's great with the butter they offer. This and a couple glasses of Riesling and the night was set. They played some strange music, stuff from Barry Manilow to Frank Sinatra and then to Guns n' roses. It's an Irish pub inside of what used to be someones home. On the side they have a nice space for their beer garden. Since the area is between what used to be a thriving downtown and the outlet mall, it's pretty quiet out there without any passing traffic. This area isn't bustling with business, so restaurants of value are hard to find.

One thing which was of a constant bother were the fruit flies.  There were many and while you're engrossed in conversation over food and drink.. it's gross and bothersome.

I'm always scrambling for places to eat in town because there are not too many good options.  McGinnis is a solid choice and they have good pub fare.  The trek abouts and onion rings are tasty and good for sharing.  I really like the rueben so I guess I'm easy.  That's what she said!  Easily the best beer selection in town which is a good bonus.  We've had on and off service here, but I've always been pleased with the meal.

This year I decided to do something different for my birthday; I took Metra to Michigan City to meet my mother and grandmother (whom I seldom see) for the day.

I scoured Yelp the night prior, trying to find someplace decent enough for dinner and chose McGinnis Pub.  The rating wasn't bad (not bad doesn't translate into good, as I've learned) and they have a full bar.

My two stars are for two things: the Harp on draft was well priced and I got my drink in a timely manner.  The bathroom was also very clean (which indicates one of two things, usually: that they also have a clean kitchen or that they don't get much business and it's seldom been used).

To start, I ordered a cup of shrimp bisque.  It was extremely bland (I couldn't even get fresh pepper for it and had to suffice with stale pepper dust out of a diner style shaker on the table), the waitress sloshed it down the side of the cup with barely a muttered apology, and considering both the cup and saucer were very hot added to the fact that they'd run out of the original soup du jour, it was obvious this soup was out of a can and had been thrown in the microwave.  It was horrid.

For my entree, I got the Jameson chicken with a side of rice and grilled veggies.  The veggies were cold and I'd be surprised if they'd ever seen a grill; the blackened lines seemed to be painted on with soot.  Or they'd been grilled in a huge batch days previously and thrown in a microwave on "reheat".  The rice wasn't fully cooked.  The grilled chicken breast was not fresh and had the toughness you can only achieve from throwing frozen meat onto a grill.  But the worst detail was the Jameson gravy, which was obviously a generic mushroom gravy that had been sitting under a heat lamp for far too long.  It was too thick, flavourless, and I wouldn't even feed it to my cats.

Our waitress was either incompetent or newly hired and not fully trained.  She spilled my soup, my grandmother's coffee, and splashed water on the table when filling our glasses (which she was not prompt about).  When the people at the next table asked what the house red was, she had no idea.  Shameful.

In summary I would never eat at this establishment again nor would I recommend it to anyone I intended to keep as a friend.

The food is good, but the service and atmosphere are great!  An old house turned pub, it is homey and comfortable.  There is a stone outdoor dining area with a fireplace.  They have a nice menu and bar, but best yet, they drive you home if you are too drunk to drive yourself!  Love it!

Not a bad place for Michigan City. I met the owner there one night and he was super nice and talkative. They probably have the best Guinness around-it's poured absolutely perfect! It takes a bit, but it's a proper pint, not like when you go to some hilljack bar an they give you a Guinness with a 3 inches of head because they don't have the tap set right.  Make sure you join the Guinness club if you go there once in awhile. Nice and small and cozy- it's in a old house, aye!  The food is ok  though... I'm a veggie.

Excellent beer and good food.  We came once for brunch and the Irish Breakfast was out-stand-ing.  Perfectly delish.

The rest of the menu is quite good.  Love the addition of the outdoor seating.  Kid friendly with a nice kid's menu.

This place is a gem.  Keep it up!

McGinnis is new to Michigan City, and they have done a nice job of decorating this pub with irish scenes, dart board and an outside area in time for the summer. On our first and only visit so far, we had trouble enjoying our meal because of the obnoxiously load group of seven shoppers on break from the Lighthouse Mall, just across the street. Food was above average pub grub, but service was a bit spotty for what is not a very big place. All in all, we will be back, more for the pub than the grub.
