I have to admit, right up front, that when Medleys Cafe was in Corning NY, I worked there for Mary. Â She drove to Corning every day from Prattsburg to offer her super homemade foods, vegetarian in the beginning. Â Somewhere along the line, after I left, she started including meat. Â It wasn't about vegetarianism so much as it was about good, whole foods and knowing what goes into them. Â The bread is made on site, salad dressings, tabouli, and everything else. Â Today was my first visit to the Prattsburg location and it was like walking into history... the same mixed selection of chairs, tables and decorations. Â Lots of live plants and art (for sale) on the walls. Â
You order lunch at the counter and menus are in large print on boards on the walls. Â Most of the same items that I and others loved in Corning. Â Mary has just started doing catering again, too. Â What would I recommend? Â Well, for one thing, call ahead and ask if she's made Veggie Cheese Rollups. Â They are the best! Â Homemade soups of the day and homemade quiche of the day. Â I had Potato Corn Chowder today "just like Mom used to make"! Â Unpeeled, diced potatoes, corn, parsley, lots of freshly ground pepper, chicken broth (I think). Â It was so-o good.
Dinners vary each night, and she comes up with some great ones. Â Just to give you an idea, here's what she recently posted on Facebook: Â "Steak Salad - 5 oz. sirloin over greens with Bleu, mandarine orange, red onion, Seared Mahi Mahi with roasted pepper and cilantro pesto, Creekstone Filet with Bacon Wrapped Shrimp, Roasted Pork Loin with Apple Chutney, and our ever-so-famous creme brulee". Â Busy dinner trade with customers coming from Bath, Hammondsport, Naples, etc. Â Evening entertainment varies. Â Check her Medleys Cafe Facebook page.
I could go on and on, but you need to try it for yourself.
I'm grading on a slight curve here 'cause it's in smack the middle of one sorry-looking downtown. Never sat down for a meal but we always grab sandwiches for the ride when heading back downstate and I am always impressed with the offerings. They make their own bread and take a lot of care and I can't wait to try them for dinner.
