Awesome selection of beers on tap. This place just does it right. The restuarunt itself seems to be huge! This is a great place to go with the family or with a few people after work. The menu is well organized with many options for various pallets. I can't imagine anyone leaving here unsatisfied !
Review Source:What was once one of my favorite stops while out on the town the Mew's Tavern has gone down significantly in service and menu options. Â My wife and I visited the eclectic bar area and felt comfortable seeing the dollars still stapled to the ceiling and immediately were thirsty for one of the many choices served on tap. Â That's where everything went downhill, the menu has been reduced, and our server and bartender were inattentive at best. Â I will not allow poor service to keep me from going back since it is sort of an institution, however I hope to see improvements on menu choices going back to the days of the not so recent past. Â Ordered teriyaki wings and bailed on main course took over 40 minutes to get our wings.
Review Source:The Mews holds special spot in my heart.
Call it nostalgia or what have you.
But this place is just darn awesome.
It's a large place that brings in a descent crowd during peak hours.
There are several rooms with funky decor, solid wood, yellow lighting and different seating options for whatever you are in for.
Whether its a few drinks with friends, a bite to eat with family or both! Every time I come here is a new experience and I feel that there is always a room I have yet to dine or have a couple of beers in.
I'm not the biggest of beer drinkers, but I have to say there is a wide selection of beers that is bound to tickle your fancy. Even if you are a wimpy beer drinker like me.
Although they are pretty big on the beer they have some awesome bartenders that can create any mixed drink you want. Even if they have never heard of it! Just tell them what you want and they will make it!
I had an out-of-state friend request a signature (I say this with the utmost endearment) masshole drink and the bartender made it perfectly!
The service is pretty good and the food is always flavorful, savory and filling.
If I'm ever in here for some food, I always order their great tasting pizza with fresh toppings/ingredients.
I can't think of anything I don't like about this place. It's completely unique, gets a great crowd, and the food is fantastic and consistent. It is definitely a South County institution!
The menu has tons of options, but not so much that it's overwhelming.
No matter what your tastes are, you can't complain about there being a lack of choice. Whether you like beer, whiskey, vodka, tequila, etc.. You name it, they have it, and tons of it! I'm a huge fan of their burgers. The patties are flavorful, and they do a great job of cooking it to your specifications, even if they are insanely busy (which they usually are on a weekend).
One of my other favorites at the mews is their pizza bar. It's fun to watch the cooks prepare your pizza/calzone right in front of you.
If the bar crowd is more your scene, then head over to the tavern side, or upstairs to the Celtic pub. Both get late night crowds, but you can also sit here for a meal as well. One great thing about the Mews is that Monday-Fridays from 4-6PM they have their "beer and buffet". $3 beers, and a buffet that sometimes includes pizza, tacos, pasta, or whatever the cooks want to whip up.
The upstairs Celtic Bar is nice, but the only thing I miss about the Mews is the martini bar called Celia's they used to have on the second floor. Even though i enjoyed Celia's, I still would not knock one star off my review.
Great beer selection and good lively crowd pretty much anytime you go there. Â Family friendly in the restaurant side or pizza bar. Â My favorite is the tavern downstairs which is always a good mix of young and old...anyone who characterizes this as "a college bar" clearly does not know the Mews. Â This food is a little better than typical pub food, the beer selection and bar are the best in South County.
Review Source:Recommended by our kids' camp, we stopped by after overnight drop-off  and solid good experience. The Whiskey Jack burger was great (upgraded with all natural Rhody beef) while the taco salad was good. The kid's plain burger was as big as mine! Curly fries were gobbled up quickly and the micro-brew root beer was tasty and refreshing. Definitely would come back here again!
Review Source:UPDATE Josh you posted that no dead animals were presend but you are wrong.. read the inspector's comments.
Rodents (dead) in traps&mice droppings...WTF...you a serving us food out of this rat infested place to the local who supported and the built up the business. i'm  all done spending money at this place. great way to support the locals Â
we were in town and went to the Mews today for lunch, wow its been about 2 years since i have eaten there. we went into the dining room and there was only 2 tables with people in it and the waitress told us it would be a 15-20 wait...WTF? We sat down at a dirty table and ordered 2 burgers. drinks were served and the soda was completely flat. when the burgers were served the roll were so dry it crumbled as we ate them . this was the worst food i have eaten in a while. this place has gone down hill and is very sad. i used to go to the mews 1-2 a week the beer and food was always good...not any more. the owners Danny & Dave should put a for sale sign in the front and sell if there heart isn't in it anymore. we both went to the bathroom before we left and both ladies & mens room were both filthily and needed to be cleaned. i would think 1 of the 10 people working there that were just talking and hanging out would clean it up a bit.
i just went to Rhode Island health department webpage and read inspectors comments:

The Mews is a beer Oasis in Rhode Island, with a big Menu there pizza is very good too. The beer list is big "69" beers on tap 3 bars it is a huge place . The rare beers are very pricey and not all that rare, but still nice to have the choice. if you at the beach or coming back from Newport this is the place to stop..
Review Source:Ah, the Mews. Â Solid food, great beer, tasty margaritas, and friendly service. Â
When I'm in the 'Gansett area I know I am bound to head over to the Mews at some point for a drink and some pub grub. It's a pretty big place and easy to get lost in. Â Room after room of bar/restaurant seating. Â I usually end up in the money room. Â There are sixty nine beers on draft, so I would recommend going with a fight/rack to try four of your choosing. Â If you are either not in to beer or are watching your girlish (or boyish) figure, I would highly urge you to try their low cal grapefruit margarita. Â Delicious, refreshing fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, tequila and a salted rim. Â Perfect post beach drink. Â
Food wise it is mostly your typical bar food but with a twist. Â Their pizza is fantastic, but I'm not a fan of the fact that their spinach is sauteed (I prefer mine fresh not mushy) so I will leave that off my next pie. Â I love their veggie pizza or their make your own . Â They also have a huge menu of burgers, calzones, Mexican dishes, sandwiches, and so on. Â There is most certainly something for the whole family. Â It's all pretty damn tasty so you may have trouble making up your mind. Â
I have always had a good time at the Mews and agree with other Rhode Islander's that it is a place that you have to check out at least once when you are visiting Southern RI.
The Mews is an AWESOME bar - well, really it's a couple of bars inside one big building. Â The decor is very cool and I love the warmth from the wood floors and low ceilings.
The main dining room of Mews has a huge tree in the middle of it. Â Off to one side is another bar/eating area and all the walls are covered with dollar bills that people have written funny notes on. Â Upstairs there's a fun Irish pub. Â Because there are so many options and the experience can't be duplicated, it's always packed at the Mews.
They have 69 beers on tap so the only trouble is trying to decide what you want to drink. Â There's also a large food menu that's fairly eclectic - Mexican, pizza/pasta, American, salads etc. Â One thing that's very stupid is that drink specials in one bar aren't the same in the other bars even though they're all the same building and business. Â So be careful about where you order.
The Mews is a tad pricey so I wouldn't make it a regular stop, but it's very fun and interesting - definitely worth the wait and distance! Â Check it out!
This is an old college favorite, and continues to be so when I make my travels down to South County on occasion. Â It's perfect if you're a group of URI kids looking for a solid meal in place of the dining hall, or a good place to gather with friends for drinks, food and fun. Â There is usually a wait, so expect that...they do have a bar area to wait in and grab something. Â The main dining area is really eclectic and is known for the big "tree" in the middle with somewhat odd decor hanging from the ceiling. Â
I love that you can get a beer tasting flight with the dozens and dozens of beer on tap, I've actually never gotten a mixed drink here because the beer is so good. Â In terms of food, you'll find the menu is pretty large and diverse. Â My go-to here is usually wings, burgers and sweet potato fries. Â The SP Fries I still find to be the best I've had...perhaps because it was at the Mews that I had my first try of them (...just realized that was 15 years ago...wow) Â
Whether you're a family, big group of friends, going on a casual date night, or want to hit a bar with some buddies, Mews is perfect! Â Also great for private events and functions.
I have been coming to the Mews for years and am happy to say everything remains the same! Consistency is key! Â
They have 69 beers on tap, so if you enjoy beer - this is the place for you. Â I never fail to get the rack of beer because I enjoy sampling multiple beers.
The food is good, and if you're lucky you'll make it here for happy hour for free pizza!
The place is huge, with multiple levels/rooms so if you're looking for a seat at a bar, take a look around and see what room fits your liking!
I have tried to eat here 3 different times when visiting my brother. Â It was always too long of a wait. Â But I finally went when it wasn't crowded with my boyfriend. Â The decor is cool and rustic, has a fun feel. The service was good. The food was fine. I had the nachos. They were pretty standard, nothing new or different. Huge menu, which I usually find overwhelming. Â Apparently this place is legendary. Â I think I would need to eat here again to see what all the fuss is about.
Review Source:"Good for beers with friends, unfortunately, they only  had one gluten free. Maybe limit budweiser and put something more local on the menu. Food:  May have been my mistake but I ordered a veg burger and they served a stop and shop morning star veg patty, freshly microwaved. Compare that with Max burger's (west Hartford) home made veggie burger with Quinoa, veggies, fresh roll. Same price, different echelon of eating entirely.  Real burger wasn't much better. Point for being close by.
Review Source:I'm not from Rhode Island, but every time I come visit (about twice a year), I have to go to Mews. Why? Their Lobsta Mac n' Cheese ($17, but hey, you get a good amount/chunks of lobster... not just 2 small pieces like other restaurants) is absolutely amazing. So creamy and cheesy and delicious. I seriously crave it when I'm back home and wish it were near me! I don't get anything else. I've had their crab dip (also spot on) and their honey buffalo wings (yummy as well!). The price point is fair for everything as well. I'm salivating thinking about the Lobsta Mac n' Cheese while writing this review already...
Review Source:The girlfriend tells me that my 100th review is a milestone and needs to be treated as such. So what better way to celebrate a Yelp milestone than by reviewing one of my old favorites that has somehow escaped being reviewed?
Reading some of the recent reviews it seems as if the Mews has fallen victim to the old joke "No one ever goes there anymore because it's always so crowded". Â As a man who hates a crowded establishment I know why you look negatively upon a place that makes you wait an hour to be seated so let me give you some advice on how to have a great evening and how to beat the crowds. When my friends hit the Mews we aim for a late lunch/early dinner. We are always immediately seated when we arrive at 3 or 4. After thoroughly enjoying our meals and brews we pick up a six pack and go for an evening trip to the beach. Doing it that way, you avoid the crowds at the beach too!
I love a place with a big beer selection. These days more and more places are offering a wide selection of quality beer so the Mews isn't unique, but still, 69 beers is 69 beers. Try a flight of 6 mini-beers, order something new, or go with one of your old favorites.
Two of my friends claim that the gizmo pizza is the best pizza they've ever tasted. I'm not sure that I agree, but their pizza is still pretty damn good. And while I "only" think it's very good, knowing that there are at least two guys out there who think it's the best they've  ever had has to count for something. The subject of calzones, on the other hand, is a different story. Their calzones are the best that I've ever had. The pink panther is my favorite but their other offerings never fail.
The Mews has its faults. You'll have to wait longer than you want to. You'll have to pay an extra buck or two than an item is actually worth. But the bottom line is that I've never gone there and left disappointed. I've never been there and failed to have a good time. I always leave happy and satisfied.
The Mews is a staple in our town! I've been going since I was a kid with my parents and still go about once a month. Def join the VIP club if you go often at all! Its easy to earn points which transfer into $ off the bill and great deals like two for one pizza night.
The beers are great and its always fun to have such a diverse selection! Not to into the cocktail list most seem too sugary for my taste, wish they would offer a more classic listing.
Over all recommend the Mews and will be back!
I used to come the the Mews in the early nineties. At that time it was just the tavern side and a great dive that served better than expected food. It has since become a destination for people that are used to chain food. Sure, they have a great beer selection and one of the best Scotch offerings in New England but this does not justify a forty minute wait for food that is only slightly better than Applebees and service that sucks.
When I tell people that I live in Wakefield they almost always ask " so do you go to the Mews every night"
The Mews in over rated at best.
I love the Mews!
You would be hard pressed to find a better beer selection anywhere in Rhode Island. I love doing the sampler and trying all of the seasonal selections.
The food is also great, the pizza is my favorite but everything is delicious!
The service can be a little slow but I think that's because the place is always packed.
They have two bars and a ton of restaurant seating, the upstairs pub has live music nights as well as a trivia night.
You really can't go wrong a the mews. Lunch, dinner, drinks with friends- the Mews has it all!
I've been several times and have never been impressed.
If you must... Go here for the beer- get a burger if you have to eat.
Don't expect the food to be good
Atmosphere: Â It is always crowded- families and large groups of college age students flock to this place. Â It is often a long wait. Â I suppose it is so busy because it is one of the few "big" non-chain restaurants around. Â NOT because the food is great.
If you're a small group I recommend you go to the tavern side of the restaurant. Â When I went with two other people the wait for dining was 40 minutes, we walked right into the Tavern and chose our seat. Â We waited 20 minutes before the server took our order, then another 40 minutes before our food came out.
Don't order anything from the pizza or calzone menu that includes chicken- it is always dry and tastes like freezer. Â
Thoroughly unimpressed with the "gourmet" pizza. Â A wood-fired pizza should have a nice crust and should look like it was wood-fired. Â My pizza came out with a pale crust and could have easily been just cooked/reheated in a regular oven. Â The toppings were gross- the chicken as I mentioned was dry and I'm not sure what they were going for with the Jamaican Jerk Chicken- it had no flavor (besides freezer flavor) I ate half of a piece and sent it home with my brother.
I've also gotten the lobster mac = awful. Very little lobster, no real flavor - I ate the few pieces of lobster and 2 bites of mac and was grossed out.
Convinced I'd just ordered bad items, I went back to Mews yesterday I got the Pink Panther calzone- inside came had a handful of shell pasta in what tasted like a jarred Alfredo sauce (with a hint of tomato)- rather than penne with pink vodka sauce. Â The prosciutto could have easily been some cheap chopped deli ham with no flavor & again, the chicken (same frozen probably precooked chicken breast) was dry and flavorless. The Idea was great! The execution was awful. Â I can't wait to make this calzone at home.
Oh man - I love this place. It's a 69 beers on tap and more in bottles plus free pizza at happy hour and giant burger contest Little Rhodey treasure (Yeah, that was a run-on sentence - what of it?!). And that's saying something since I am not and never was a URI student - this place is crawling with them.
Why do I love this place? Two words: beer flight. I get new beers every time I come here; they always have great new craft brews to try. And two more words: Everest Burger. When the menu uses the words "Gluttonous Pig" about a sandwich, it's something you have to try. And try I did. I failed, but I did so mightily.
Go to the Mews. Do it.
Love this place! Nice atmosphere, great beer to choose from and friendly staff.
We started off with the nachos based on other reviewers...meh.. they were just so/so. Nothing too extraordinary.
I got the Pink Panther Calzone. Crazy good! It is so different and unexpected. Their homemade pink vodka sauce really adds something special. If you are a pizza/calzone fan and want something new and delicious, give it a try!!
My husband got the Whiskey Jack Burger. I had a taste... it was delicious too!
We will be going back often.
I remember coming here Freshman year of college, on winter break with some high school friends from NK - ex boyfriend, hippies, druggies, etcetera crowd. I was tryin to hide my New York Fancy. Probably through getting WASTED and stuff... Anyways at some point in the night I thought it would be a charming idea to start sourcing the bartenders' tips from all the holla holla dolla dolla bills taped to the ceiling and walls. I mean: WHY NOT?! Right?! Right?
And I'm not sure but I may have gotten kicked out, and my ex didn't think my antics were so funny anymore... Neither of us got laid that night. He cringed, I sulked. There was some lame after party and that's all I remember.
Fast forward nine years! Ok cool, RHODY FARM FRESH BURGER - Grass Fed too?! Excellent. I'm stoked.
WOOD FIRED PIZZAS?! Really?! I had vaguely remembered getting a delicious spinach and bacon salad years back, but this... this... this was a menu I could roll with. Legit! Supreme! They're catching on to the locavore movement and bringing us happy meat made from free range cows. I'm feelin it...
Beer selection is ace. Especially if you like IPAs, and Belgian brew - wow, they even have Delerium Tremens. My Favorite. Lots of the beers come in 7-9% alc content, so, watch it.
Pizzas were thick and too chewy and the cheese was plentiful and bland. So that sucked. I was sad we ordered two of them: I really did't want to eat them. I could barely muster a slice, and the buzz was already there, AND I'm a pizza-holic. So yeah - we ordered the basic one, and then some other kind loaded with sausage - blech.
I ordered my roady burger medium rare. If you like your burgers medium rare, just order them rare. Mine came brown and dry and way cooked through. Always better to be able to just cook a burger a little more than throw one away. I ate it, but it was sad.
Sweet potato fries = no flavor.
My friend got the Thai Peanut Salad and was disgusted by it. Especially when a carrot slither accidentally fell on her arm...
When the waitress came to check in on us about the food, we all went silent... Buried our heads in our plates... But then perked up, because we needed more beer!
But not even the beer could save the food.
Chris M. nailed it in his review. The food is just bad here. It could be good, but it's not.
So, this is a great place to drink.
The Mews is one of my favorite places. Â I'm actually a little bit mad at them because the menu has changed and my favorite item has been removed. Â Mews management, if you're reading, bad call on taking away all of the specialty sandwiches, Lucifer's Lunch was a winner. Â
Anyway, I stopped off there a few weekends ago for lunch and had a Cajun chicken sandwich. Â It was moist with very fresh lettuce and the roll was tasty. Â It was a toss up between trying the sandwich and a calzone. Â I ate my sandwich and watched the pizza maker toiling in front of the pizza oven and decided to order a calzone for take out. Â OMG. Â Seriously, it was DELICIOUS. Â EVEN DELICIOUS COLD. Â EVEN DELICIOUS COLD THE NEXT DAY. Â
A nice mix of locals, college kids, families, etc. Â There is something for everyone on the menu. Â Choose from 69 beers on tap. Â You can't lose.
It seems like there are only two reactions to the words "Mews Tavern." Either you love it, or you've never heard of it.
Seriously, I'm not sure what kind of Jonestown, Heaven's Gate, Apple Store cult they're running down there - but I've never met a single Rhode Islander that's ever been to Mews that wasn't constantly telling me about how it's the best bar in the universe.
Mews is largely a college bar with a typical bar menu and a decent number of beers on tap. I think this is the source of it's allure to Mews partisans. Many of them have fond memories of Mews because its where they went to drink in college, and confuse that with it being an objectively good bar. Also, I think Mews got on the whole  tons of beer offerings train early, so for a long time if you were a beer lover it was one of the better places to go in RI. However, now that so many other bars have gone that route, Mews isn't necessarily that special.
I'm not saying that Mews is bad. It's a good bar. If I were a URI student I would love it. If I lived in the area I might go there occasionally. It's even worth taking a trip down there every now and then to visit friends in the area of just to go somewhere different.
But if, like me, you've been hearing that Mews is the Holy Grail of pubs from your friends - just understand the context and then everything will make so much more sense.
Beer selection = strong
Food is unremarkable, but varied and steady
Pseudo-unique lodge atmosphere
Good classic rock soundtrack
Enjoyable - I just dig it here. Â I've found the staff to be friendlier than advertised, especially Matt M with the glasses - very welcoming, knowledgeable, and helpful.
If you're in the area, make it a point to drop in and see what it's about, if for nothing else than 69 taps, cocktail and food specials, and comfortable spot that won't drain your wallet. Â Odds are you won't be blown away, but you WILL enjoy yourself.
I really dig this place. The atmosphere is great especially for laid back south RI'ers. The bar area is really unique and fun with dollar bills stapled all of the ceiling and tagged with peoples names and messages.
The dining room has a huge tree in the middle of it making it a bit whimsical. I just love the feel of this place.
Aside from that, they have a great beer selection and a menu with funny dish names. Everything I've ever eaten has been great. I especially love the pizzas.
It's a must do when visiting Rhode Island.
A mecca for on-tap beer and scotch/wiskey selection. Â There is something that will appeal to anyone and the selection does rotate, both based on season and based on bringing in new beers to try. Â They still do have some of the old favorites (Sam Adams), as well as more rare selections. Â My boyfriend and I like to get a rack (4 7oz beers) to be able to try a few things. Â
Dining/drinking options give you a traditional beer tavern, a sitdown dining room, and a Celtic pub. Â (I miss the martini bar....please bring it back!)
The wood-oven pizza has a thin crust that I haven't been able to replicate at home -- likely the heat of the oven. Â I've had nearly every pizza on the menu and, depending on your mood, you can't really go wrong. Â
The burgers are big and filling. Â My go-to is the blue cheese burger wtih mushrooms. Â Or the buffalo wing burger with blue cheese crumbles....maybe there's a pattern there? Â
If none of the above appeals, the menu is quite large and diverse. Â
It was usually always busy around dinner time and into the late night. Â There are no reservations. Â Parking can be tight -- but there's street parking too. Â I've been a million times and I will go a million more.
Now brace yourself, this may come as a shock... but I don't flock to Mews for the beer. Â *gasp!*
Sure the beer selection is great, in fact they have 69 constantly rotating taps, but for me that's just a bonus.  What I'm really dreaming about while driving down that never-ending stretch of Route 4 into Wakefield is the Firehouse Calzone.  I'm fairly confident this calzone will be my undoing!  I don't know what it is about this delicious doughy pocket that makes it far superior to any other buffalo chicken calzone I've ever had.  Maybe it's the dough.  Maybe it's the combination of buffalo sauce, pepperoni and pepperoncini rings. Maybe they lace the entire thing in crack.  I don't know.  What I do know, what really separates this calzone apart from it's inferior  counterparts, for me at least, is the use of grilled chicken over fried chicken.  Don't get me wrong, fried chicken tenders covered in buffalo sauce do have a place, but not in my calzone.
The service here can vary, the prices are a tad inflated due to the proximity to URI and the wait time can be borderline ridiculous Friday/Saturday nights. Â However, with all of that being said, once that Firehouse Calzone is placed in front of me, all of that goes out the window for I have reached buffalo calzone nirvana and nothing else matters. That alone merits 5 stars.
Love The Mews.
Fun.
Chill.
We started with nachos. Excellent choice.
Good food - I had a gi-freaking-normous burrioto with shredded chicken, black beans, rice, salsa, guacamole - you know, everything.
Their burger selection is awesome and always done to perfection.
Over 100 scotches to choose from. Some very rare selections.
69 beers on tap.
Like their tee shirt says "No Crap On Tap." Indeed.
The atmosphere in the bar section is that of a very comfortable pub. The building rambles on and on with plenty of cozy places to sit, eat, drink and relax.
Food is, as several have mentioned, adequate. Nothing here is going to knock your socks off but then again, you are not going to be disappointed either.
