Had a great lunch a Mike's Wine Dive today with my mom. Everything was delicious! We had the hummus, she had grilled fish tacos and I had the chicken sandwich. Upgrade to the sweet potato fries drizzled with truffle oil, you won't be sorry! I could have eaten an entire plate of them! We had a great waitress who did a wonderful job of making suggestions on wines and the food. The s'mores were a great end to our meal.
On a side note, the sandwich is huge. Could easily be shared.
Mike's Wine Dive builds itself to be a fantastic wine bar with it's appearance and setup, however it lacks from that point. Our waitress initially asked if we had ever been there before; handed us a menu and basically walked away without explaining much at all. We perused through the menu slowly, trying to figure out what to go with. Our waitress probably came by to ask what we wanted about four times, each time not offering a hint of advice or what may be a popular pick.
By the time I started to settle for a wine, I found that they were out of it. Second try, they were out. Third try, they were out. Nice to know..... The wine that I DID settle on, I later googled and found out it was pretty much a $13 bottle of wine that I paid $7 for a glass of.
Our appetizer was the Queso Fundido. It was OK, basically a bunch of thick, melted cheese with wedges of bread and some veggies. There was more cheese than bread, when our waitress decided to check on us after what seemed like eternity, she asked if we'd like more bread to finish the cold cheese dip. We said sure, about five minutes later she brought more bread that was literally black and burnt on the bottom. THANKS!
Needless to say, we were very disappointed and left after finishing our first drinks and appetizer. We will never return or consider giving this poor excuse of a wine bar a second chance.
I'm a pretty big fan of Mike's - first because it's in my neighborhood and owned by local folks, and of course because the food and drink are delicious.
Mike's is definitely a "date night" kind of place (I can't tell you how many first dates I've been on here) - it's dark and romantic. But it's also great for a "girl's night" or group of co-workers/friends, and I've even sat at the bar solo a few times -- which is placed way too high to be comfortable, by the way, but it's manageable. So pretty much any occasion except for a family night -- never seen kiddos in there, and I like that. On weekends you'll find live music which is a really nice touch.
Their menu is pretty interesting, some of the more unique dishes are "deviled eggs" as an appetizer, "wild boar ragu" Â for an entree, and "do it yourself s'mores" for dessert. They used to have plantain chips for a side item - I don't see it on the menu anymore but am excited to see "truffled sweet potato fries" instead.
I gravitate toward the vegetarian enchiladas (imagine that) which is served with Spanish rice, pico de gallo and avocado slices. Large chunks of veggies inside corn tortillas and some sort of sauce that's making my mouth water right now.
I've been a little disappointed in the pinot noir by the glass selection - and I wonder if they ever get new wines in or change the wine menu? The menu on our table last night was tattered and ripped so I'm assuming it's an original.
Service has always been top notch for me - attentive but not rushed, and eager to help you select a wine or cocktail.
Came here on a Sunday night with my girlfriend. Based on her recommendation, they are glutton free on a few items. Which is great for her.
Walking towards the place, you notice small interesting things about the establishment. They have a unique and cool pattern painted parking lines in their lot. Inside, you smell an interesting fragrant inside. We were instantly greeted by the hostess and she seated us immediately. The bar is fully stocked with hundreds of different wines, and the place has a new hip vibe going for it. The chalk board had a cool cork border around it, and the seating was fairly comfortable. Indie-rock esque music is playing and candles were lit at each table.
The menu itself is very basic, with large print on a single thick weight paper. Our waiter was very accommodating to our level of browsing the menu. We ordered the sweet potato fries as a starter. The wine/alcohol menu was very large. Just about anything you can think of is probably listed there.
The fries that came out to our table looked great, and we had a few choices of dipping sauce to go with it. I recommend the honey mustard to go with it.
After I would say 15 minutes our main courses arrived. I ordered the fajitas, which came with both the beef and chicken options and she ordered the Grilled Chicken and Veggie Pasta. My meal came with an interesting amount of options to build my fajitas. My plate was a hot plate with all the grilled onions and veggies sizzling, and the meats cut on both the left and right side.
It was very, very good. Portions are more than plenty to which you could probably share it with another person.
This place is a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for in the end.
Service was prompt and quick, and the food is freshly prepared.
I recommend this joint if you want a full fledged experience.
Went on a Wednesday night and it was fairly empty (although it was Halloween night). Â Had the Steak Sandwich per Gabby A.'s recommendation, and the sweet potato truffle fries with some wine.
I felt pressure to get the wine, even though I don't really drink much of it. Â Basically, when someone has provided wine I'll have some but that is about it.
The list is a bit intimidating but they break everything down to flavors and feel, so I picked one and was relatively happy with my choice.
Service was good (sat at the bar). Â The steak sandwich was tender without being fatty. The cheese gave a nice robust taste. Â The fries were well-cooked (crispy with some potato inside). Â Overall, a nice place. Â Good for casual conversation and food with a bit of flair.
I don't know how to feel about Mikes. I like it. Thursdays are $5 OMGSOGOOD martini day. Last time I went, the martini glasses were smaller. SAD. The food is pretty great.
It's not a place where I want to hang out. There's just too many dudes in chinos and loafers willing to pay $20 for Mac and Cheese.
It's been a mite-bit of a cultural shock: a legitimate wine bar in Wichita with a selection of cocktails, concoctions and beer expansive and unique enough to rival some of those pretentious Kansas City joints? Mike's has it.
And if you're a lady (or gentleman) who happens to be a bit of a lush, the house sangria is highly addictive. You'll be blushing and giggling after just one of these perfectly sweet, only ever-so-slightly boozy, drinks. But if you're more of a burly beer guy (or are a lady looking to impress that cute guy with the bolo), the craft selection isn't too shabby either.
Mike's food is pretty good, but don't expect anything super extraordinary (though that Kobe burger is supposed to be something fantastic). The deviled eggs are nice, with a touch of balsamic and a creamy smooth yolk, these seem like the perfect brunch dish. The bruschetta is great, though I'd recommend it more as a Vampire repellant than first date food.
One of the reasons Mike's is a terrific place to go in Wichita is because it is one of the few restaurants in the city that gets it right on all fronts: creative and interesting menu, appealing but not ridiculous concept, attentive and knowledgeable service, and excellent atmosphere in a well-designed interior space. No bad art or anachronistic tablecloths; no bad attempts at Italian; an actual competent wine list (not great, but not aimed a true oenophile either, really); really nice list of martini cocktails. It does encompass what is good about this city: it is creative and funky without being pretentious or absurdly showy--it is understatedly hip, kind of an inverted Portlandia, that, rather than threaten to drown in its own vanity and self-consciousness, welcomes and just kind of exists in its own state of charm.
There are several things to recommend on the menu. They know how to prepare beef, which is always a high point for me; I had the best burger I've had in Wichita there (the 8 oz. kobe with bacon and brie, clearly hand-made, blackened, and pink in the center) and the steak frites is also excellent, a well-prepared cut served with balsamic reduction. Standouts among the appetizers and desserts include the drunken bread (crumbled baguette, gruyere, white wine, parmesan, thyme) and the chocolate torte. Too, the prices are quite reasonable given the overall high quality of the menu; the Creekstone Farms 6 oz. filet is $22, for example.
The menu has its predictable moments, such as the coconut shrimp appetizer and the ahi tuna entree, but compare Mike's fish tacos with the much-lauded ones at Sabor ...Mike's is competent enough that, if you don't want to go all out and try the wild boar pasta or the chimichurri-drizzled deviled eggs, they serve things loads of other places have, yet still impress through quality ingredients and execution.
If I had to choose one restaurant for an out of town visitor that possesses quality and a sense of what Wichita is, Mike's Wine Dive would have to be it.
This is a place with both ambiance and food; from the guitar-shaped sinks in the bathroom to the angled bar with shelves full of wine, it's a nice place to go for a dinner, and the food is both delicious and plentiful... perhaps a little too plentiful.  There are some good options for vegetarians -- hummus appetizer is delicious, vegetable enchiladas are great, spicy but not too spicy, and the brie and mushroom soup they had on when we were there was fantastic.  The desserts are OK -- the creme brûlée wasn't quite set right, and the chocolate "sack" is inedible because the chocolate is so thick, but it's some of the best vanilla bean ice cream I have had in a very long time (perhaps ever).  Will be back next time I'm in town...
Review Source:Mike's Wine Dive is a cool place. Â I came here with some friends while visiting in Wichita and we had some tasty food and satisfying spirits to go with it. Â
The atmosphere is very nice without being pretentious. Â It was a bit loud in there, but over all it had a nice energy for a Friday night. Â Nothing too crazy. Â We were able to get a table right away, which was good because we were starving after our 4 hour drive. Â
We started out our meal with a wonderful thing called Drunken Bread. Â Oh my God this was good stuff. Â It was like a savory, boozy, cheesy, bread pudding. Â The dish consisted of pieces of baguette, gruyere cheese, prosciutto, white wine and parmesan cheese. Â So, so, sinfully delicious. Â There were four of us splitting this, and it's a good thing that was the case. Â It's very rich and meant to be shared. Â I highly recommend it. Â Â
For dinner I had the steak sandwich which was prime rib, caramelized onions and blue cheese all grilled to perfection on delicious bread. Â The prime rib was so tender and flavorful and the combo of flavors was awesome. Â For my side I got deviled eggs. Â That's right, DEVILED EGGS! Â I couldn't believe I could get this as my side. Â I was so excited. Â These little babies were delicious. Â They were incredibly creamy, topped with green onions and balsamic vinegar and herbs. Â Mmm mmm. Â Delish.
Everyone else at the table enjoyed their meals and I enjoyed the bites they let me have. Â My boyfriend had a burger that was top notch and he got sweet potato fries drizzled with truffle oil on the side. Â The fries were heavenly. Â
The service was pretty decent, but definitely the weakest link of the night. Â It took quite a while to get our order in and also to get our check at the end. Â Other than that, my experience at Mike's was a great one.
Great food at a low price. I love the location and it has brought a new energy to college hill. The only downfalls I can think of is that on one occasion they charged my friend double on a ticket which they promptly fixed. Also just call ahead to see what time the grill closes. I'm a server and I understand mistakes happen with tickets. Overall, very nice atmosphere, great food, and they have some great drink specials.
Review Source:I have been to Mike's several times over the past 2 years. Â It is one the bright spots in the dull, barren plane that is central Kansas. Â
For lunch or dinner, you can't go wrong with the Kobe burger or the Cuban (with truffle fries, of course). Â I have tried several of the entrees and have never had a bad meal. Â The lobster mac and cheese is a favorite of mine. Â The wine list is quite good and my wife and I have discovered some of our favorite wines at Mike's. Â
I wish very much that there were more places like Mike's Wine Dive in Wichita. Â Great atmosphere, great service, great wine.
Terrible service and overall lacking ambiance. Â Our server was very rude and unwelcoming - she took our dish while we were visibly still eating, and immediately delivered our check with no "thank you" or any comment whatsoever. Â Highly do not recommend this place if you value decent service.
Review Source:Food was delish, martinis were delish, waiter was awesome... Would have five stars if I didn't have to watch the hostess stand by the door chewing gum like a cow, looking like she hated life bc she had to be there, Â she also saw my drink spill ALL over the table, chair next to me & floor and just turned around ignoring us & pretending she didn't see it, all we wanted was a towel! Â Didn't even inform our waiter that we had a spilt drink everywhere! He came back 5 min later & discovered we needed some clean up help & got me a new martini :) Â besides an unprofessional hostess, we had to sit and watch be grouchy, Â it was a pretty fun night :)
Review Source:I love their wine selection, it is impressive. I like the foral aromatic selection. I love how they describe the wine so it makes it easier for beginners to choose . I also like the "taste" size option so that you are not stuck with a glass of something you don't like. I has the Kobe burger with the sweet potato fries and it was very good.
Review Source:I go out a lot...mostly lunch or "cocktail hour". Â I am so pleased to have found "Mike's Wine Dive". Â Good wine selection , but more important (to me), one of the few places in town you can order champagne by the glass...and more important (to me), more than one selection. Â
Appetizers were "yummy", especially the coconut shrimp & the shrimp avocado salad.
The best thing about "Mike's....the service staff. Â I have found them to be knowledgeable, efficient, polite, friendly and non-robotic...as are so many servers in Wichita establishments. Â Good job!
Average service but the food and ambiance were a pleasant surprise. The menu selection was large but not overwhelming and everything we had was prepared well. When we came back a second time and enjoyed wine on the patio in the late evening it was a great way to enjoy a nice neighborhood that needs more of such offerings.
Review Source:So I really want  to like this place. One of my friends suggested it. When I walked in the door I was warmly greeted. They had my table ready for my reservations even tho I was 10 minutes early. The waiter was great at first . He saw if I needed anything while I waited for the rest of my party.  I had one of their Thurs $5 Martini drink special which was pretty good.( I usually don't drink but I ordered a drink so I would have something on the table while waiting for the rest of my party to show up.) After we got our food the waiter disappeared. Most of my guest were not into their food.  I had the salmon and it came in some sort of paper. It was kind of annoying that I had to unwrapped it and got my hands dirty. It has a citrus flavor to it but other then that it was pretty bland and it had a side of soggy veggies. So after that I had the chocolate paper bag desert. It was a chocolate shell filled with ice cream. It looked cute but it was not very good. I ended up playing about $40 just for myself after tip. Overall I was not impressed.
Review Source:On a weekend trip to Wichita, I checked out Mike's. Â It was a beautiful day so we sat on the outside patio. Â The service was very good. Â Our waiter was constantly checking on us, but not to the point of bothersome. Â The bartender was obviously good as what he/she does....my Vodka Gimlet was one of the better I've had in any city. Â The food was very good. Â We kept a menu and ordered a number of appetizers over time as we drank, treating the meal more Tapas style. Â I do suggest both the "Drunken Bread" (great, but rich....just a few bites will do) and the Shrimp and Avocado Salad. Â I must say, being from the Gulf Coast, I was amazed at the size and freshness of the Shrimp, at a place landlocked in the middle of the country.
Review Source:As a Wichita restaurant, Mike's hits most of the marks as well as any other restaurant in the city, and is worth your money.
Something felt off about Mike's, and it began months before I visited. Perusing the menu, I could not find something I really wanted to eat - something that got me excited. The way ingredients were chosen and described, it all felt too orchestrated. Suspiciously perfect. Maybe I was adverse to the Caribbean and South American flavors that peppered the dishes - the plantains, the mangos, the jicama. Maybe I was just looking for something to nitpick.
Ultimately, it was the draw of the wine bar that got me to visit, thanks to some friends that I was meeting for dinner. After all, wine bars are like regular bars for people who have money and nice clothes. I'm not a wine guy, so I'm not going to pretend I remembered what I had, nor how it tasted, aside from mentioning the service was what you would hope to find at a wine bar, and our waiter was plenty helpful at helping us find something that we would enjoy. There's quite a large bottle list, but the wines served by the glass were much more manageable and ranged the gamut.
I was under the gun, so I had to default to choosing one of the specialties of the house, the Achiote Pork, a couple of Frenched pork chops served with grilled polenta, plantain arranitas, and topped with a mango jicama salsa and sweet onion marmalade.
The menu stated the chops would be cooked to my liking, but it never came up, though the medium to which they were cooked was still quite sufficient for a juicy piece of pork with a bit of char from the grill. There wasn't much more of the salsa than to provide a bit of garnish, but the onion marmalade provided some sweetness to offset the pork. The arranitas were very similar to potato cakes, and I would have liked the polenta to get a bit more crust on the grill - it held together, but it was pretty soft.
The two dishes that seem to receive the most acclaim at Mike's are the Wild Boar Ragu and Seafood Mac and Cheese, which appear to simply be variations on the same cavatappi. I'm not likely to go to a restaurant and order pasta with meat sauce, and even after trying a bite (it wasn't as heavy as I was expecting), I don't think eating an entire bowl of macaroni and cheese is my idea of a main dish.
The worst thing about this menu was the Queso Fundido, which I found to be a little grainy and I thought they skimped on the dipping ingredients a bit. Not that we didn't eat it all, of course. Still, no matter how I tried, Mike's got the best of me. God knows what I'll order if I ever return, but we're operating in a dearth of wine bars in this city - I should have just said it was good and shut up.
This is the restaurant I am proud to have in Wichita. Â The wine list, though overpriced, is impressive and thorough for every palate. Â Every menu item I have had has exceeded my expectations. Â All the appetizers are unique and great. Â I love Emily's Chicken Salad and the pasta dishes are great. Â My only compaint is that the staff cannot seem to get my order right every time I come.
Review Source:I'm very excited this place opened up, it is going to do well. The wine list is great, the staff friendly, and the wild boar ragu is my absolute favorite. The only downside is that it gets very loud and the bar is pretty high, minor set backs to what I think will become a Wichita dining staple.
I have now dined there multiple times, tried many of their wines, and ordered takeout. Â Yeah. Â this place is amazing and is of my top 5 favorite places to go in Wichita!
Great Food
Good Service
Large selection of Wines
This was Mike's Wine Dives first Saturday night to be open and it happened to be the same night of Wichita's annual Wine Festival. I didn't arrive until 9pm and the place was absolutely filled. Waiting time was guesstimated at 45 minutes for our party of 8. We waited an hour because it seemed lively, fun and the wait staff and hostess seemed very attentative to our needs. Lets not forget that wine drinkers aren't exactly pushing to finish a glass.
We ended up waiting for our table on the outside patio, dining on appetizers "Mike's Oysters" and "Cocunut Shrimp", swirling one of the Dry Creek Valley Zen's they "had availible", I was wanting a Sonoma, but they were sold out. Must have been a busier night than expected because our table ended up buying the last bottles of Zen's. I believe they had 5 different Zen's to choose from.
Wichita has been waiting for another wine bar for some time now, primarily because the other wine bar in town hasn't ever changed their wine list and is not known for good service. Hopefully this place will rotate the wine list seasonally and continue with the good service. Give it a try!
