Loved it! Â My husband and I got the chicken quesadilla for an appetizer and it was cooked perfectly and really good. Â I got the Potato and Chicken Bowl. Â It was delicious. Â Kind of like Shephard's Pie but with crispy chicken...and in a bowl. Â Its pretty much my dream meal. Â Delicious. Â My husband got the Gumbies. Â He really liked them and he liked he Honey BBQ sauce he got with them. Â There are a lot of really interesting and tasty looking things on the menu, so we can't wait to go back and try different things. Â Its in a weird location, but besides that we loved everything!
Review Source:It was very crowded when we came in which wasn't surprising for a Friday night.. got seated pretty quickly though. Pretty good sized menu as well as portions.. I couldn't even finish my meal. Our drinks took awhile to come but the food came in a reasonable amount of time. Friendly service, definitely great if you're looking for BBQ.
Review Source:Mojo's is a Portsmouth treasure with truly something for everyone. The menu is extensive, with their signature BBQ dishes in addition to burgers, steaks, chicken, and fish. Mojo's succeeds on several levels; it's a family restaurant, it's your neighborhood joint, it's a sports bar, and it's a great destination on date night.
I was visiting Portsmouth from Seattle and could have happily eaten at Mojo's every day. The staff is friendly and attentive, the portions generous, and the food excellent. We have a lot of great restaurants here but I can't name one that does everything Mojo's does under one roof.
Stopped off on my way back from my vacation in Maine it's a bit off the beaten path but that's a good thing they have parking. I had a http://restaurant.com certificate and it was welcomed with a smile very friendly service the food was out in a pinch and really it was quite good not the best bbq of my life but the friendly service and pretty good grub made it a destination I will return to a welcome stop on the road
Review Source:We will definitely go back!
Arrived at 7:30 on a Saturday night, no wait, which was great. Tough to find with the road construction. Funky decor, great music playing at just the right volume. Â Our server, Betsy was FANTASTIC! Â She explained the specials, and gave her recommendations of the menu items. Â She checked on us throughout the meal, and we never had to go searching for her. Â We could tell she really enjoys working there.
We both ordered the white wine sangria, my hubby thought it was too sweet but I really liked it. Â I got the 1/3 rack of ribs with the steak tips added on, cooked medium, and the corn and collard greens. Â He got the 1/2 rack with baked beans and dirty rice.
The ribs were good, but there was a lot of gristle, and they were not as fall off the bone tender as they could have been. Â I added extra BBQ sauce which helped. The corn and collard greens were good, could have been hotter. Â The baked beans and dirty rice were good, also could have been hotter.
All in all, we would go back and try the pulled pork and/or the chicken. Â Loved the atmosphere, the giant tvs with college football were awesome.
Private lot parking behind the restaurant is a big plus as we had spent a different evening searching for parking closer to down town to go to another Portsmouth restaurant.
Good food, good drinks, reasonably priced, fun atmosphere. Â Can't ask for more!
My husband and I were looking for a place to eat in Kittery, and we weren't in the mood for fried seafood, so we stopped in at MoJo's. Â At first the noise level was intimidating, but once we figured out that no one was going to come take our order, we settled in to scope out the menu. Â I'm a fan of pulled pork sandwiches, so that choice was a no-brainer. Â My husband ordered the brisket sandwich. Â I can't speak to my husband's sandwich except that he didn't share -- it was gone in 3 minutes. Â But, his sweet potato fries really tasted like sweet potatoes and not just orange colored french fries. Â On the other hand, my pulled pork sandwich was served on a large soft bun with a HEAPING amount of succulent pork. Â The smoke ring in the pork was visible, the meat was moist, and the flavor was awesome! Â This is a pulled pork sandwich I would gladly have eaten without the sauce -- the meat was THAT good. Â The sauce, however, added that extra bit of sweetness and spiciness that only enhanced an already fabulous sandwich. Â Can't wait to go back!
Review Source:I was here on business from San Diego and just happened to find out about this place while in Kittery. I ended up going to the location on Brewery Lane a few Saturdays ago. The food was not bad. Not the best bbq but I wasn't disappointed, The collard greens had good flavor and the beans tasted good as well. But what made me give this place four stars is the white sangria made by the attractive, dark curly haired young lady tending bar that day. I have never had a sangria so good and so strong, and by strong I don't mean a drink thats overly sweet or tart with some kind of pre-mix crap. This woman put her foot in this sangria (Southern term) and hooked it up! She needs to teach a class. It was that awesome. She just makes it off the top of her head, and I heard that she adds a secret ingredient. Whatever she did it worked.
It sucks that the food has received such low stars. Oh, by the way, my server did a great job as well. She was attentive and gave equal time to me, and the other table that she was tending. If I'm ever in Portsmouth again I am definitley dropping by for a sangria
Had a pulled pork which was terrible. COOK, you need to remove the FAT when pulling the shredding the meat. It was FULL of fat. Terrible. Got some wing. Lousy!! Can't believe a place that is open and does not know how to prepare chicken wings. You don't just cook wings and squirt some hot sauce on them. I am SHOCKED you are in business.
Review Source:Tonight was the first time my husband and I have eaten at Mojo's and we thought it was okay. The ribs and chicken were very good, however the pulled pork was dry. Coleslaw was delicious, the beans had a lot of potential but they were very thick like and starchy, almost as if they had been sitting in a heater for too long. My husband got the mac n cheese which was a white cheddar mac n cheese that was bland and mushy- not very good. The potato salad was okay, nothing great.
Overall it was good BBQ meat- but if you like a lot of BBQ sauce def ask for extra, there wasnt too much on the meat. As far as the sides are concerned, not a huge fan.
I got the prime rib special on Friday night and was very disappointed with it. Â It was incredibly bland and, overall, the worst restaurant quality of meat I have ever had! Â The two sides I had (i.e., mac and cheese and mashed potatoes) were small portions and also rather bland in taste. Â I went to this place for the first time on a whim, but due to the poor quality of the food I doubt I will be back!
Review Source:This place rocked. Last time I came here, It was some other place. Mojo's took over obvi and I liked the new ambiance.
There were a lot of locals here, and one girl there even mentioned that it was a hillbilly bar, but I didn't care and had fun with the hub playing the trivia game with the little electronic game boards.
The beer selection sucked. minus one star. but the deals were decent for the scuzz beers.
We ordered the dirty bird sandwich to split. cajun chicken grilled, mayo, tomato, lettuce, swiss. and fries too. It was very very good. all of it.
Had fun. will return.
This was our first time to eat at MoJo's and we had a very pleasant experience. Â When checked in our Foursquare so we got a free pulled pork quesadilla, which was absolutely delicious! Â We'd order that again for sure. Â We each ordered a rack of ribs. Â I had fries with mine, and my husband ordered the collard greens and the mashed potatoes. Â Cornbread comes with the meals - loved the cornbread and my husband didn't care for it because it's sweeter cornbread.
Our ribs were great, however the sides were just so-so that we had. Â The mashed potatoes and collard greens left a lot to be desired. Â The collard greens had no seasoning at all, and the mashed potatoes had lumps of uncooked potatoes in them. Â
We'll go back but we'll skip the sides we had.
we will start with what was good, Â the fried pickles had a good flavor, Â the fried chicken was excellent...... thats about it
now for the bad. Â the ribs were rubbery and probably undercooked, i asked for them dry and the put bbq sauce on it. the bbq sauce was lousy, rice was dry but had some flavor, the sweet and spicy slaw was neither, it tasted like wet paper. pulled pork was bland and the brisket was fatty and had too much sauce on it. and the corn bread tasted like it came from market {last week}
I have friends that work at Mojo's and I've heard nothing but good things about the food. I finally stopped by for lunch this afternoon and I'll say it's not bad. The combination of below-par service and overcooked food was disappointing.
The waitress was also the bartender, and she was pretty wrapped up in chitchatting with the people at the bar (the big money customers, most likely). When she came to take our order, I got out "yes, I'll have..." before she told me to hold on so she could answer the phone. Being someone who works in customer service, I always help the customer in front of me before answering the phone, if I really take that long, and it's super important, they'll call back. So needless to say I was a little peeved.
Food came out in a timely fashion, I ordered the Smokehouse Ranch burger. They should probably include in the description of the burger than the "smokehouse ranch" they add to it is like a chipotle ranch. It made it hard to taste anything else after eating it. My burger was overcooked, but sizeable, and not dry. My husband got "tips and tenders", and his steak tips were overcooked as well. The sweet potato fries were fantastic though. He got mashed potato (also very good), and onion rings (a little too much fried batter for me). Also their Arkansawce that they keep at the table in a squeeze bottle was pretty tasty. Great with the fries.
My husband had to get to work, so he was not thrilled that after the waitress dropped off our check, and he promptly stuck his card in it, that she went back behind the bar for more chatter, and lots of text messaging. He finally went up to the bar to have her cash us out.
I thought the atmosphere was really what MoJo's had going for it, everyone at the bar seemed friendly, and there were lots of large tvs for whatever game may be going on. I'd consider going back...and ordering something else.
I dined here on a Wednesday for the "Steak Night" 10 oz. $9.99 special. It was probably one of the blandest, driest pieces of meat I have ever had. I was forced to use their Arkansawce to give it some flavor. It was also a little over cooked for med-rare. The sides (mash potatoes and mixed veggies) were very small portions. I was lucky I had ordered the (overpriced) chili cheese fries as an app to fill me up.
On a positive note, the staff was pleasant and ambiance was great. I was able to get a table right in front of a TV with the Red Sox game on.
If you must dine here, use the Restaurants(dot)com gift card to save yourself a few bucks.
Fun, sports bar like ambiance. The ambiance outperformed the food, by far.
The "turkey" in the Turkey Dinner sucked. It tasted Sysco/rubbery like. The gravy was gross; paste-like. Come on guy's you could do better than that, or take the Turkey Dinner off your menu. The "fixing's," however, were good; the Cranberry Sauce made it out of the can OK, the mashed potatoes were good, and the fresh vegetables were fresh.
We would not race back to MoJo's.
Fourth trip to Mojo's will be the last. Service was slow, the ribs were mushy and looked like they had been carved up with a chainsaw. The bottle of spicy BBQ sauce at our table was empty. On the plus side, the beer was cold and the hog wild wings were excellent. However, when I want BBQ, I won't be coming back to Mojo's.
Review Source:Terrible. I had a feeling it wasn't real BBQ. No smoke smell anywhere or any evidence of it in the food. I also knew when I saw the menu. Good BBQ joints do not need to put 100 things on the menu. I'm so tired of this shit. Don't advertise as a BBQ joint if all you do is slow cook and microwave. Mo smoke=no BBQ. The bar was nice. I'll admit it looked like a nice enough place to have a beer. They hire pretty bartenders. The food was shit. If you want BBQ save your money for Goody's in Brentwood, KC's in Manchester, or Tennessee in Peabody.
Review Source:This is my first update since Mojo's moved to Brewery Lane and I'm disappointed. Â The food is okay but it's no longer amazing. Â The mac and cheese is better but it still needs something and the meat is more bland than it used to be. Â Sure there's the BBQ sauce, but the pulled pork and steak tips weren't much without it. Â The dirty rice was milder than I had expected but it was okay. Â Based on the food alone, Mojo's has gone from a four star experience in a small and intimate space to a three star experience in, believe it or not, a sports bar.
Nothing against sports bars, but four of us walked in on a Sunday afternoon for a late lunch with good conversation and some blues playing in the background. Â What we got was a loud sports bar where conversation was impossible and conversation was drowned out by a football game and the endless (and much louder) Toyota commercials. Â Oh, what a feeling.
They have a dining room but when there's a game on, it's like the dining room wasn't even there. Â We complained to a guy who told us "That's the way it is." Â Later our server asked us how everything was. Â We told her and she just said "Oh, it's Sunday". Â A third person asked us later and we just rolled our eyes and didn't bother saying anything. Â The sooner we got out of there, the sooner my headache was going to end. Â Three stars just became two.
Okay, maybe it's different every other day. Â But I won't be going back to find out. Â Someday when a few of us are thinking about where to go for lunch or dinner, I won't remember that the problem was related to a specific day of the week. Â I'll just remember that the atmosphere was terrible and Mojo's won't be in the running. Â I used to really like Mojo's but not any more.
Finally, my wife had an interesting idea. Â Mojo's may still be okay for takeout food. Â Not that I was impressed by what I got, but I'd be willing to try a rack of ribs to go. Â I want to give their food another try if I can get it to go.
Standard BBQ fare. Definitely a fun place to watch a football game, not too far off I-95. Wonk cheap beers on Sundays during NFL games, bud light was $2 a pint. Full rack of St Louis style ribs, not enough smokiness here. Fall off the bone, and served dry rubbed with sauce on the side. Side of collards and mac & cheese, both standard. Good and substantial ribs.
Review Source:Despite my earlier experience with untrained, uninterested staff, I went back for takeout this time.
Placing an order, the waitperson answered the phone, heard that I wanted to order, instructed me to hold on while she got ready to take an order, and after 45 seconds of waiting, asked me what I wanted. When I asked if she was ready, she was rude and impatient. Never an explanation or apology for the delay.
OK, so I order. I show up to pick up the ribs. Almost a full bar, no bartender in sight. A guy who was either a manager or an owner was talking pleasantly to a seated couple and walked right by me (I had been standing there for about 60 seconds) without saying hello or if I could be helped. He did pick up my order (bagged) and asked "Whose is this?" A waitperson appeared and told him it belonged to a person with my last name. No one had even said hello to me yet.
I spoke up, said it was my order, and the waitperson took my credit card and said a price that was more than what was stated on the web site for the ribs. I told her that, and her reply was, "Well, we haven't updated our web site." I said, "Is that MY fault?" She ignored me.
Again, three-star ribs, No-Star service and attitude. When will these people learn? When will I learn to stop getting the ribs?
Collards!
Off the top, I want you to know that the collards nearly bumped this place from a solid 3 stars to a soft 4.
I digress.
On the way home from a day at the beach, we stopped in Portsmouth for a bite. I knew there was Q, so I quickly Yelped on my Blackberry and adjusted by GPS to the closest establishment.
Mojo's is in an industrial area, but the space is pleasant inside. A big bar, and a nice dining area. I was a huge fan of the meat in the ark logo, as well. It was an early dinner, and service was fine even as it started to pick up.
I got the pulled pork dinner with beans, collards, and cornbread. The pork was unsauced (good job, Mojo's), allowing me to taste the meat before I added anything. It was good, although a bit dry. I suspect that I got the edge of the pan, as some meat was juicier than others. (Reheated leftovers being excellent confirms this, in my opinion.) The beans were pretty spicy, which I liked. The cornbread was pedestrian. The collards were phenomenal. A great mix of savory pork flavor, spice, and vinegar. I could have eaten a bowl of the stuff.
All in all, Mojo's was good - about par for the course up here.
I think their new location is excellent. Â There's a lot more parking and more seating. Â
I had a combo plate, pulled pork and ribs came with two sides (I had beans and mac and cheese) and cornbread. Â The pulled pork was tender and juicy and barely needed saucing. Â The ribs were literally fall off the bone tender. Â They had the best baked beans I've ever had. Â The mac and cheese was a disappointment though. Â The whole shebang was around $15. Â It was a lot of food. Â
They have a couple of sauces available. Â The regular red bbq which is a very good. Â The one that stole the show in my opinion was the Chipotle Mustard Sauce. Â It had a fair bit of heat and was very tangy.
I have to admit that the service was rather slow. Â I ended up with a soda instead of the water I ordered, but the food came out correctly. Â The guys seated next to us though apparently waited 25 minutes for a burger to come out... and didn't wait any longer.
I've been to Mojo's BBQ Shack three times now, so I thought it was high time I wrote a review.
As a SC native always in search of good, REAL barbecue, Mojo's has come the closest in the area for me. Having had their Pulled Pork sandwich, brisket and now an appetizer called Gumbies (a kind of boneless chicken wing), I have yet to be unhappy with the food.
The pulled pork was definitely not Carolina style tangy barbecue, and was a little more Arkansas red than I'm usually a fan of, but I have to admit - it's good. It wasn't too tomato based to kill the experience. I'd love to see a place brave enough to do a real, spicy, tangy vinegar based marinade barbecue pork, but I think New England's palate isn't ready for the heat. For now, this will do just fine.
The brisket was much better than I've had so far in New England, and was perfectly cooked and tender. The Gumbies are going to become a staple, I can tell - simple chicken strips in any of three sauces, but they seem to melt in your mouth. I combined the Arkansawce and the Buffalo sauce on the owner's recommendation and the spicy sweet combination was outstanding.
My companions have had a variety of their sandwiches and have yet to be unhappy. A crowd favorite among my friends is the Dirty Bird sandwich, which packs some decent heat considering that we are smack in the middle of bland New England, aka "ketchup is a spice" country.
They lost a star for the wine selection. Yes, I KNOW it's a BBQ joint, but I'm not a Bud Light girl. Nathaniel Creek (or whatever the house is) and Yellow Tail is not a happiness combo for me. There are plenty of affordable wines (heck, there are even a lot of affordable *local* wines, to boot, if you want to stand out) that put Yellow Tail to shame and could be unique offerings that went better with tangy sauces without the heartburn and headache of mediocre vines.
Plenty of parking, killer live music, great food, good service, karaoke, friendly staff, and not too far from Downtown in their new location mean this will become a regular stop for me.
Ok so here is my update.
I gave it another star because of it's new location.
It is now down Albany street where the BLT used to be. Â Still awesome food but now with a full bar and they still do trivia night on Wednesday's. Â Can't wait to go in for that. Â I stopped in for lunch and got my favorite. Â 1/3 rack with fries, slaw, and the cornbread the meal comes with. Â The cornbread was moist and so so good. Â The slaw was just as good as allways. Â Best part is I had a Summer Ale to wash it down. Â Place is awesome and if you want BBQ, this is the spot.
I've had Mojo's BBQ from both the (now-closed) North Hampton location, and the Islington Street location in Portsmouth. I really like the sauce - it's rich, tomatoey, not too hot, not too sweet, not too vinegary.
I think the word that comes most to mind about Mojo's meat, aside from the amazing Arkansawce, is inconsistency. Sometimes the meat (pork or brisket) is dry, and sometimes it's moist. Sometimes it's chunky, and sometimes it's actually shredded and pulled. Sometimes it tastes like it's been brined, then seasoned, and then sauced, and sometimes, it's disappointingly bland. Sometimes the price is what's on the board, and sometimes it's less, and sometimes it's more.
The sides are generally disappointing. The mac & cheese is good if it's hot & fresh, but the flavor is not consistent -- we do keep trying it. Sometimes it has red pepper flakes in in, and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes, the sauce has broken, and it's always a thicker floury sauce, not a smooth & creamy sauce. The potato salad is bland. The cornbread is overly sweet.
I've never eaten in. The place is very clean, and the counter staff is always pleasant, but I always have to double check the order, because it's rarely right, and I never order anything complicated - # of brisket, # of pork, quart of mac & cheese.
While I really like Mojo's food, I was severely disappointed tonight to call their new location and place my first order for delivery only to find out that they now only deliver if you place a HUNDRED DOLLAR ORDER. Â What?!?
The woman kept assuring me that the food is the same great food that they've always had and that I can come on in and get take out. Â It took 3 times for me to finally get through to her that with about 3 decent places delivering food in the Portsmouth area, losing Mojos service is a serious blow to the already limited scene. Â I can do take out from every other restaurant in Portsmouth, please don't patronize me with that as a "great" option.
I really hope they bring back delivery and I will boost the rating back up. Â Right now: Â 4 stars for food - 2 stars for removing a great service = 2 stars
This BBQ was solid. I had yelped it ahead of time and decided to stop in for lunch before settling into downtown Portsmouth for the rest of the day.
The inside is small and cute. It seems they are moving down the street to a larger place, a sign was displayed inside. When we approached the counter a young worker greeted up while we perused the menu. My boyfriend who is a ribs every time guy at BBQ places knew he would be getting a half rack platter. I chose the pulled pork sandwich with a mac and cheese side.
The food arrived fairly fast. The ribs were falling right off the bone. My boyfriend will give this place 5 stars cause he thought the ribs were the best he's ever had. The difference he said was you could taste the smoke and they were just right sauce and all. The side of potato salad was delicious. It had a whipped texture, made with red bliss. Coleslaw also had a good home made texture and taste.
My pulled pork sandwich was good. I found it a tad dry and extra vinegary cause it kept dripping out til the end. I wish the bread was warm cause it was cold with the warm meat at first. Still I worked with what I had, I could add additional sauce. The mac and cheese was surprisingly good. At other BBQ places its seems to be the artificial orange sauce kind. This one had a creamy white cheddar sauce. I enjoyed it. Cornbread was moist with a good texture.
I appreciated that the counter guy came back around to check on us after we started eating. He got some compliments on the ribs and said that's what he usually hears. Prices were decent for BBQ. A half rack platter with 2 sides, a pulled pork sandwich with a side and 2 drinks was $27. When back in town I would hit it up again. They even sell jars of the "Arkansauce" to go!
I'm a big fan of Mojo's. Â I'm not going to say that everything here is great... I got a Gobbling Pig once and the turkey was very dry (it's a turkey and pulled pork sandwich, for those not in the know). Â The sides can be hit or miss (even the mac n cheese). Â That being said, I must convey how much I've enjoyed pretty much everything else there. Â The collards are good, not too vinegary, and they're definitely the real deal because they ran out once and I was told another batch wouldn't be ready for 3+ hours. Â The ribs are fall apart good. Â The beef brisket is wonderful, though ask for extra sauce. Â The pulled pork is great, very tender, though I like the brisket much better. Â The fried chicken is super crispy, and while it's not sweet (honey dipped doesn't necessarily mean sweet), it's really very tender on the inside, so I'm game. Â I've had the dirty rice, mac n cheese, collards, potato salad, beans, and sweet potato fries. Â I like em all, but I'm partial to the collards and the beans. Â Guys, warn your girl if you got the beans... just sayin.
Anyway, I've gotten a lot of different things here with my GF and my buddy, and we've all had great meals for reasonable prices... I never feel sick after eating here the way muddy river would make me feel sometimes. Â If you have to choose a BBQ in town, this is a good choice and I doubt you'll walk away disappointed.
Also, according to a sign there, kids eat free every day. Â How do they do that?
I've been to Mojo's a couple times and had some okay meals, nearly always getting the ribs. Â The sides are decent, though the mac and cheese does need punching up, Â and the portions are generous. Â HOWEVER... Â The last time I went there with a friend, we were both sick for the rest of the afternoon. Â We both had the ribs, different sides.
When I'm feeling brave I'll give them another shot, there's no other decent BBQ in Portsmouth, and I'm not often in Eliot to make it to Muddy's.
