The best beer place for hundreds of miles. Jerry (the owner) selects all of their beers and he cares deeply. He loves his customers and is simply the nicest guy around.
The atmosphere is awesome. Warm and comfortable with a fireplace for winter days, and a great outside area for summer time.
Tons of stuff on tap. It's also not a loud bar. Its easily my favorite beer place in Sioux Falls. You'd think it was in a big city for how excellent their selection is.
Highly recommended.
Recently, my wife and I decided to drive up to Sioux Falls to checkout Monks (and other area haunts) over St. Patrick's Day weekend. Â When we arrived downtown on Saturday there was a St. Patty's Day parade about to start and some sort of "fun run." Â The place was packed. Â We decided to come back after the parade. Â Fast-forward a few hours. Â
When we returned we found seats at the bar. Â The place was about half full. Â The tap selection was good, plenty of nice beers. Â Our visit to JL Beers down the street had "better" beers on-tap (not sure if that's the norm or not). Â Still, excellent selection of beers (when bottles are included).
After ordering a couple beers on-tap we decided to split a bottle of Jolly Pumpkin. Â We ordered it because we could see the bottle in the cooler. Â Our bartender up to this point had been largely incompetent, inattentive and completely clueless about beer. Â Perfect for a beer bar. Â My wife ordered and I decided to walk around the place. Â I was gone about five minutes. Â Still no beer. Â Our bartender was standing looking at the bottle cooler. Â She came back and said "they were out of it." Â We pointed it out to here in the cooler. Â Meh. Â She didn't care. Â We got the bottle... why she didn't ask for help is beyond me. Â The general vibe of the staff sucked. Â And as we were leaving we introduced ourselves to the owner. Â Mentioned the bar was awesome, great beer, etc... mentioned we are in the beer business, etc... and just suggested, nicely, the wait staff needs a little training. Â He didn't seem to care about our opinion... ok. Â Nice doing business with you!
Nice beer bar. Â Great for Sioux Falls. Â I'd go back but my first impression is not stellar.
I have visited Monk's the last few times I have been in Sioux Falls and both times I have enjoyed my experience. Â
The beer list is good, with a welcome reprieve from the SD standards of Bud, Bud light, and Michelob. Â They had a dozen-ish beers on tap, plus who knows how many cans/bottles. I like it!
As far as food, I tried the Thai Chicken Pizza and holy happiness! This is a great pizza! I really liked the peanut sauce as a base with the chicken and sriracha. It was so good. The only criticism of the  pizza is that the crust seemed to be some pre-packaged thing.  If the pizza would have been on a great crust, this pizza would have made it into my top 5 pizzas of all time.  Seriously, it's good. Â
The service is meh. Â It takes a while for someone to notice you. Â I want to yell "hey I'm here and I want to spend money." Eventually, you do get noticed and then the service is good. Â Maybe it's just a logistical issue that needs to be addressed. Â I dunno. Â Whatever, there is good beer and food so I'm happy.
I simply love this place and don't get down here nowhere near enough. The brew selection? It'll make your head spin, and the choices are better than Old Chicago. The food was fantastic, too. A barbecue chicken thin crust pizza for $6 (happy hour)? Sure. But the fun doesn't stop there. My next dish is going to be the mashed potato pizza.
You read that right.
The beers I've had include everything from an EKU Pils (Germany) to a Delirium Tremens. The prices edge a little higher, but you're not swilling Coors Light here either chappy.
Do yourself a favor and stop in -- or on the patio -- if you haven't yet. And thank the sweet Lord there's a spot like this in Sioux Falls.
I'm local and have frequented Monk's since it opened. Â I like the neighborhood pub atmosphere. Â Very relaxed and casual with pleasant out door seating. Â The staff have been with Monk's since opening and are friendly and efficient. Â The beer selection is the best in the city with a good cross section of Belgian, imported and craft beers on tap. Â Monk's doesn't serve full meals per se but the moderately priced menu items are big enough to make a light meal out of. Â It is a great place to go to enjoy a good beer and pleasant conversation.
Review Source:A gem! Fantastic selection of beers in a great atmosphere. If you love beer and chillin, give this place a try because I have not encountered anywhere better in the Sioux Falls area. If you're looking for a place to get hammered and party it up with several women, you should probably head elsewhere. This is a classy establishment.
Review Source:A cute little place that features a huge selection of beers and even a few decent wines. -1 star for the way too hot fireplace (I stripped down to a tank top in December in SD--that's not right) and for putting ice in my cider (??)
In a town of chain restaurants and bars, I like to see places like this survive.
Huge tap selection - like 25 or more! And maybe 100+ in the bottle selection. Â Great outdoor seating. Â I drank my dinner that night, so I'm not sure about the food. Â It sounded like the music was controlled by the bar staff....which means that it can really suck at times, and there's nothing you can do about it.
Review Source:We've had really, really bad service here. Â Hard to get service, hard to order food, I have even heard one server swear under his breath about some of the patrons - BUT, beyond that, the beer selection is great and I really liked the food. Â There's not a lot of food choices & the portions are kind of small, but the pizza and avocado rolls are pretty good. Â Good place in town to find a variety of beer selections.
Review Source:Monks is one of the most relaxing places to be!!! there is a great night life going on but yet at the same time it is cozy! The staff has always been very helpful... i mean the selection of beer is huge.... the also carry beer that i have not found since traveling abroad. I figured that i would try different beers while traveling and probably not see it again until my next visit  overseas.... Monks brought them to me..... i love it!
Review Source:Found Monk's on Yelp...excellent place for a beer. Â Won't find your ordinary Miller-Bud-Coors selections, but you will find an excellent selection of great beers...many regional...some available nationally. Â 20 beers on tap....many others offered in bottles...the place is very comfortable and upscale....the server was very knowledgeable on the beer offerings...prices were very reasonable...you simply can't go wrong stopping by.
Review Source:We are full-time RVers whose residence is in South Dakota. Â As such, we roam around the country and come back to Sioux Falls every 5 years to renew drivers licenses. Â This time, we found Monk's beer bar. Â Loved it! Â Great selection of brews, some of which we have found nowhere else in our travels. Â Very friendly and very knowledgable barkeeps (not to mention some great bar mix muchies!). Â Friendly patrons and great music which didn't drown out conversation. Â Only problem for us is that we'll have to come back to Sioux Falls more frequently!
Review Source:I have only been to Monk's one night after dinner at another downtown eatery. Â I had dessert there which was a chocolate pyramid filed with chocolate mousse--decadent and yummy. Â The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. Â The environment was very relaxed and comfortable. Â I plan on returning again.
Review Source:Monk's is definitely not a bar in the traditional sense. Â Also a coffee shop during the day, Monk's House of Ale Repute (I know, the name is all cheese) caters to a more subdued drinking crowd. Â It's an intimate setting with a relaxed atmosphere and has an absolutely fantastic beer selection. Â There's no Budweiser or Miller here, it's all top notch stuff. Â They have everything from local microbrews to a wide selection of European beers. Â You are bound to find something new and interesting to try. Â I'm not a wine drinker, and so far haven't tried the food, so I can't comment on those.
When you walk in to Monk's you aren't a bit surprised that it doubles as a coffee shop. Â It just has that kind of vibe to it (leather couches, local artists' work on the walls). Â The music, while not generally my favorite stuff, isn't too bad and is kept reasonably low. Â Â You never have to fight to be heard over what's blaring through the speakers. Another perk, in my opinion, is that Monk's is non-smoking. I haven't been in Sioux Falls all that long, but Monk's is the only non-smoking bar I've found. Â Not that it is a necessity for me, but sometimes it is nice not coming home smelling nasty. Â
My one small complaint about Monk's is that you never really know what beers they have available on tap when you go. Â They have a menu that lists somewhere between 15 and 20 beers, but they usually only have about ten of those available at any given time. Â It can be a little annoying to order something only to have the wait person tell you that you can't have it. Â A couple of times I've had to go through three choices before finding one they had. Â Would it be that hard to add a small sheet to every menu with the current options and just change that when the options change?
If you are looking for a place to have a drink and a conversation in a laid back atmosphere or if you just love good beer, Monk's is the best place I've found so far in SF. Â It's perfect for those not into the stereotypical bar scene, or if you are just in the mood for a quieter evening.
