Great dive to sneak away from the mundane of the river walk. Pool, darts, & beer. The burgers were just what we needed after a long day of sweatin` in the summer sun. Warren was very helpful & chatty. He made sure we were properly taken care of. Mostly locals & bicycle "gangs". Very quaint.
Review Source:Went walking looking for a BBQ place and came across Moses Rose's. The place was empty, and the entrance is laid out a bit like an adult bookstore or something. We went in anyway, and sat down to look at menus. This place was "divey", which I don't mind at all. Unfortunately the menu basically consisted of sandwiches. We were hoping for some serious Texas BBQ. Nope. Not tonight. I ordered a BBQ sandwich with some kind of meat that was indistinguishable from 1000 other sandwiches I've eaten. I also ordered a side of fried potato salad, which I thought was a GREAT idea! IN theory it actually is a great idea, in execution here it was not. It actually was still a little cold, and not nearly crisp enough. I'm going to try to make it at home myself sometime.
Strange atmosphere, just edible food, nice enough staff, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it.
Had the surf'n'turf burger. One word... Bombdiggity. Yeah, I said it. Shrimp and beef and bacon on one bun, why have I not done this before!? I had the wings there, as well, and they were yummy! A little hard to find when we were looking for it; however, that could have just been us and our... Uh... Not so sober sense of direction.
Review Source:I have never been more happy to find a Bar/Burger Joint that I can call,"My new hangout." I was a little leery at first walking into the place. Once I put on my best, Doc Holliday face and strolled through the saloon doors, I was greeted with friendly smiles and offered some of the most cost effective and great selections of beer in the downtown area. Â Just when I thought that was going to be the highlight of my night, I put on my big-boy pants and ordered the 'Flaming Jack' hamburger. Â Ok, if there is another review on the best burgers in Texas and I do not see Moses Roses at number 1, Texas will need to find new burger experts. Â The fries looked a little dodgy until I stuck one in my mouth. Â Best, "skin on" fry I have ever stuffed into my face. Â I became more amazed as my visit continued, I even love the fact that the chef came out and served me my meal on a, very well presented plater. Madrids, can take their cheep buns, canned been burgers and flattened out patties and throw them to the dogs...... stray dogs.
I can't wait to go back and put the chef to the test. Â If you see a guy stroll in and sit at the bar armed with a Nook, you better be ready ;)
I'm pretty confused about the closing and opening of The MoRo on Yelp. I don't get it, regardless it gives me an opportunity to renew my opinion and review on the place.
The location has been around for a little over a year now. There's a new kitchen staff and serves Bunz burgers and sandwiches. The food is still great, its just more grease, Â cheese and carbs. I miss the Brussels sprouts!
The other thing that's constantly been an issue is the crowd control. During the week, its great. Â Cool crowd, Â nice bands, Â pretty smooth. The weekends after 9 pm is like the military sent out a memo to all the minors that said the MoRo does not ID, which causes an overwhelming frenzy at the bar, then makes you wait in line and that you should hurry up to flood that establishment every Friday and Saturday night and drive all the regulars away. That's what happened to us. Its happened on several occasions since these kids have caught on. Then there are only maybe 4 staff members serving up this huge facility. Its amazing. I would not be surprised when they get fined for lack of Ids being checked and selling to minors. Until they get some security or you like waiting in long drunken lines keep away on the weekends.
A definite stop for your visit in San Antonio- it's right across the street from the Alamo.
Our visit here was totally made by the chef. It was in the middle of the afternoon so it was slow. The chef came to our table, introduced himself, and conversed with us about what we like to drink and what we like to eat. He was personally invested in helping us get the exact drink we would like and making us something that would amaze us. My fiancee ordered a burger off the menu, but I worked with him to create a hodge-podge "burger." It ended up being a filet of fish (seriously though, it was a whole half of a fish. HUGE), with barbecue sauce, jalapenos, lettuce and tomato. He was super excited to serve it to me as no one had ever ordered that before and this guy truly enjoys cooking and making people happy. As we ate we talked with the chef about the area and you can tell he just has a passion for cooking and San Antonio.
The beer selection is great- they have some really unique stuff. The bar is huge, and the room is large. There's a place for live music.
Overall, everything gets 5 stars. Yeah, this is a divey-looking place, but it's character wins you over. Plus they go the extra mile to make it really entertaining to figure out how to get in. The food is nothing fancy based on ingredients, but passion goes in to it, and they have some really unique methods of preparation - fried potato salad anyone? We have been traveling for 6 months straight all across America. We'v eaten at countless restaurants, and this was the best customer service we've ever experienced at a restaurant. If we are in the San Antonio area we WILL be going back.
I was a little annoyed about this place, but please don't take that to mean this place was bad. I had just received word about getting a new job and was with a number of my family visiting the Alamo. We were looking a BBQ place and was a little disappointed to find out Moses Rose's was more of a bar. No ribs to be found on the menu.
I will say this though, the place had charm with service to match. I would guess that we had about 30 of us in our group so to have that sudden influx must have been a big surprise, as much of a surprise as the rather odd entrance to the establishment. The food took a bit of time to come out but was well worth the wait. I found my shrimp sandwich and wings to be scrumptulescent. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a beer and some good grub as we found out.
My fiance and I have been travelling the US for the past 4 months, and we've used Yelp alot to help find the best gems for food and drink in the various cities and towns we've passed through and stayed out. Â Yelp has absolutely gotten it right this time, probably some of the best one dollar sign food we've ever had. Â As others have said, finding the entrance is a fun way to start. Â At night, we were told the antics on how to get even more fun. Â Our server, Rob Scizzle, who also is a chef, was very personable and laid back. Â I ended up getting the Surf N Turf burger (burger topped with a butterflied jumbo shrimp and chipolte sauce drizzed on it) Â which was huge, juicy, and delicious! Â My fiance ordered off the menu, and got a fish burger, with some of their house BBQ Jerk sauce on it. Â She absolutely loved it. Â We also ordered the fried potato salad as an app, along with a half order of the fried pickles (Rob was kind enough to do the half order, as we knew we wouldnt be able to finish all of it otherwise!). Â Both were out of this world. Â All in all, it was a wonderful experience dining there, and a great way to fill the belly before or after visiting the Alamo!
Review Source:Ah I am envious of people who have not yet gone to Moses Rose's Hideout, because I would love to experience my first time at this place again. I won't divulge why the first time is so fun, but you'll know what I am talking about once you get inside the bar ;)
This is a really cool dive bar with a big saloon type seating area and a small stage, which usually has a pretty good act playing live. I love his place because it has put some thought into making the bar stand out, creating a unique experience for patrons, and the tourism of the downtown area has not yet spoiled it. Moses Rose's is completely unpretentious, laid back, and is just a solid place for a good drink. You will see all walks of life mixed together enjoying themselves, making it also a great spot for people watching.
I have not ordered anything off their menu, but was offered some appetizers by a table next to me. I tried a few things that I can't remember now, but nothing was too spectacular, but also nothing was terrible. If you get hungry I think the kitchen is open until 12.
My absolutely favorite bar in San Antonio. Â What a unique little gem. Â It all starts with the entrance. Â Without giving it away, let's just say it's entertaining for those on the inside watching on TV as people in the lobby try to figure out how to get in. Â But don't be discouraged, we don't laugh at you.
They have a full bar and several beer choices. Â They serve bar food and small bite fare. Â And let me say: A M A Z I N G. Â I tried about 5 items, all less than $6 and all big portions and absolutely perfect.
During the day it's divey and family friendly. Â Each night has a different theme and activity, from kareoke to bands and DJ's and poker night. Â Come 7 nights a week and never be disappointed.
We booked our large group 2months in advance and they seemed unprepared for us. It took an hour for everyone to get food and the food was barely o.k. The clientele was a bit sketchy and I wouldn't recommend this place to a large group. Cheap food is the main highlight for this establishment.
Review Source:First of all, I'm a local. Me and my husband and 2-year old stopped in yesterday after walking past the window and seeing a newspaper article pinned up in their window reviewing their "Macho burger". Â We ordered the brisket nachos, pretty good. Hubby ordered the Macho burger, I got the chicken avocado sandwich, which, sorry to say, was tasteless. True San Antonions know there's only one place for a Macho burger, it's not here. We will go back, but not for the food.
Review Source:The story goes that when Colonel Travis drew his famous line in the sand at the Alamo and asked all those who were willing to stay and fight to step over the line, one man didn't step over the line - Moses Rose. Â He split and needed a place to hide out. Â In the shadow of the Alamo, we have Moses Rose's Hideout.
Lunch and dinner are good - standard hamburgers, nachos, and the like that you can expect to find downtown. Â Friendly staff, a good selection of beers and also a full bar. Â
The coolest part is the focus on live music - I've seen all kinds of bands here: the rock-n-roll of Joe Turner, the country-pop-punk-psychedelic of Snowbyrd, the shoegaze of Vanity Press and the Saturday Night Satellites. Â They even do an open mic night on Mondays - they provide all the instruments! Â Want to serenade the crowd with a tasty original or your country-fied reworking of Lady Gaga? Â No need to worry about bringing your guitar - they'll let you use theirs!
Be prepared - they make you work a little bit to gain entry. Â Go in through the gift shop and perform the task they assign you (Push ups? Jumping Jacks? Â Maybe doing the Tootsie Roll...) Â Then they'll show you the real way in. Â Watch the closed circuit TV's as everyone else acts silly performing their own tasks to gain admittance.
This is a welcome addition to the downtown scene that's too often filled with tourist trap chain places. Â Oh sure, there will be tourists here, but they've made an effort to be appealing to tourists and locals alike - and they've succeeded!
Loved this place. Speakeasy vibe is great, dont judge a book by its gift shop cover! Â My husband and I went in for dinner and drinks. Justin started us off with a few cocktails and menu suggestions, while we had a laugh about one of the bars "quirks". Everyone was very friendly, and the band was tuning up for what sounded like it was going to be a great set. While i have always thought the fish tacos in ensenada or mission beach San Diego were the best ive ever had, i have been wrong. So flavorful and juicy i could eaten another basket full! With the side of fried potato salad (yes fried), which was to die for. My husband had the brisket tacos, and they were amazing. We coulve just eaten the brisket all by itself, ITS THAT GOOD. No sauce, in its own juice, we were thinking about going back for lunch again today. Along with a side of their slaw which was perfect and we were happy. Remember the name Wolfman folks, he's got talent and he will be a chef superstar! Thanks for taking the time to meet us and we will be back!
Review Source:Went  here with some work folk after hitting up SegCity (which was super cool!).  Group of 8, and we were the only people in the place.  We were initially helped by the chef Michael (who was really nice and informative).
Got the Travis Guac burger with Texas Tobacco Onions. Both were really good! Â The Texas Tobacco Onions were fantastic.
The highlight of the meal was the homemade ice cream Chef Michael let us try. Â Blackberry, Pumpkin, and Apple. Â All were terrific, but the blackberry was my favorite.
This place is exactly what I was looking for in a downtown hang out.
Part restaurant, part music venue, all bar. Walking in on a Friday night to a standing ovation put my ego at an all time high (dig that), and top is off with funnel cake, homemade ice cream and a really great beer selection? I can get behind that.
This has a great ice house feel to it, and it is far enough from the craziness that is the Riverwalk to warrant more locals than tourists. My friends and I were able to hang out with a wide variety of San Antonioans including the family with 3 kids eating burgers and the bro with dreadlocks getting his groove on with his fanny pack while jamming to some great rockabilly tunes. There are plenty of tables and chairs for everyone and the bar tenders are crazy friendly.
My favorite part? It's education friendly, thanks to the Texas Tidbits located in the bathroom. Who knew the name was actually a witty jab at a historical figure?
The only thing that could make this better? Giant Jenga...there's a perfect table in the back.
What you need to know about Moses Rose's Hideout:
Good:
The beer is served frozen cold.
It is jampacked on Friday nights.
Lots of good looking women.
Awesome rockabilly live bands.
Plenty of TVs to watch sports games.
Bad:
There was a leak from the ceiling.
Weird:
There's a secret room equipped with a hidden camera where you can be watched from one of the TVs at the bar.
You know this downtown spot is good since all of the reviews come from locals and not tourists! And their soon-to-be famous sign, "Bar, Music, Food" is tops.
So, my favorite part of the experience was walking in through the gift shop. It was as confusing as they intended it to be. No one was inside and the nondescript door was a little hard to find. But, again it's the way it was intended and made walking in a bit more fun for me and Danny C.
Then you get inside and find a bar with music and food just like promised. The Grackles were playing the night I was there and they were great. The weeknight crowd was low-key and relaxed. They have an excellent bar menu, both beer and bites. Lots of local craft selections made me happy. Way to keep it locally-focused even though you're main crowd is tourists, Moses Rose's Hideout!
My wife and two daughters were visiting San Antonio looking for something that isn't aimed at tourists and serves some good food - we got super lucky...
Fresh after learning about Moses Rose skipping out on the battle at the Alamo, we stumbled upon his namesakes restaurant. Â To be honest, food was our focus and we were a bit worried with the smallish menu. Â I was however craving something other than the usual macrobrew and was pleasantly surprised with a good selection - had a great rye IPA - but make no mistake, the food served our family of four exceedingly well. Â
All the ingredients were noticeably fresh and we were informed that they are locally purchased - direct. Â We had one of almost everything, pleasant surprises in every basket. Â Okra was fresh and the dipping sauce was original. Â My eldest daughter is the pickiest of all - she loved the fried black drum. Â The oyster po' boy was deliciously unique and the chopped sandwich was solid. Â The venison chile cheese fries were a rib stuffer but two things took the cake for me - the brussel sprouts and the potato salad. Â I've had all sorts of potato salads and am admittedly pretty particular about them, this one brought it home for me. Â My wife who readily admits to being scarred by her mother relative to sprouts lamented not having more after I forced her to have the last one since the rest of us were stuffed. Â All in all, great and affordable meal for us.
We did go early evening, before the bands, crowds and bar scene - the staff was great and welcoming to my family.
I'm digging this place for having only been there once. Interested setup at the door, kinda speakeasy-ish which will lead you to question what will happen if I push that button.
Inside, this place really opens up tables galore, a very long bar, garage door style countertops. Which I wondered if you sit there an smoke since the smoke will go outside....but I don't think so. They had a texas worthy beer selection and nice selective liqour section (well at least the scotch.) They serve munchies and actual entrees. We stuck with the venison chili cheese fries since my stomach had made a deal with my liver and they agreed on giving me more alcohol as long as I ate. Back to the fries, they did it right... it was covered in chili and cheese and there was plenty of meat. Hooray! Â The fries were still crispy, double Hooray! Â
Also, they have someone jamming out every night of the week, except open mic night...which I'm sure someone will do a rendition of a some song. I browsed their website and it seems they have nice mix of music acts from Ska to Country. So, this is a must stop on the downtown SA bar scene.
Finally! Â A downtown spot that is neither too divey or too upscale (and I actually like both), something in between is exactly what you get. Â Not only that, it's a live music venue! Â You just can't seem to find much of that downtown unless it's a mariachi group or a small jazz troupe. Â It's a "locals" type place that welcomes everyone, no matter what your zip code or how long your stay.
Their location is cool since it it just a block away from the Alamo on Houston St. but still just a couple blocks away from parking meters along travis and broadway. Â Moving along...it's kind of fun entering Moses Rose's since you need to press the red entry button in the small foyer. Â Once the door opens you are welcomed to a mid-size bar and plenty of table seating. Â The beer selection is pretty good since they offer types other than bud and miller, I'm not judging, just saying there is some kind of variety (St. Arnolds, etc.).
Also, they do serve food. Â I've never been sold on places that mix food types, Moses offers burger type fare and Mexican food. Â The burgers are pretty good but I haven't had the Mexican food yet so I can't give you a review but I plan to try it out in the ne
