My co-worker and I were excited to discover a restaurant that would deliver our favorite Thai dishes! Â Unfortunately, we were seriously disappointed.
My co-worker ordered the Pad Thai with chicken lunch special, and I ordered the drunken noodle with chicken lunch special. Â We split the entrees so we could each try a little. Â Both came served with a spring roll and fried rice. Â Our meal arrived well over an hour after our order was placed.
The spring rolls were greasy, and filled with nothing but cabbage. Â The fried rice was very pale and flavorless-- almost as if it had been pulled straight from the steamer and dumped in a mixing bowl with a bag of frozen peas and carrots.
The Pad Thai was drenched in peanut oil, and lacked in every other regard. Â It was completely missing the "umami" taste that comes from the fish sauce, had no bean sprouts, and was very skimpy on the chicken, but heavy on the egg. Â My co-worker's request for a lime wedge on the side was completely ignored, but I doubt that little bit of lime could have done much to save the dish.
The Drunken Noodle, advertised as "2 chilis" spicy, was the first drunken noodle I've ever been able to describe as "bland". Â I doubt a chili pepper was even waved in the general direction of the pan it was cooked in. Â Like the Pad Thai, it was oily and light on the meat. Â The noodles were far too overcooked, to the point that they mushed into paste when picked up with a fork.
I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to even my worst enemy. Â I was greatly disappointed, and will not be ordering from them again.
I wanted to really like this place. Â The menu has a wide range of options and the chef clearly cares about what he's doing. Â However, some of the meals are very basic Asian-American dishes you could make for less at home. Â Really, only a few of the dishes are somewhat unique. Â Their green curry Thai was excellent, for example. Â However, this is far from a bistro. Â The service was incredibly slow. Â We had to ask to get our drinks after we ordered, and it must have taken around 45 minutes for our food to finally arrive. Â The waitress did check on us a bit, but not as much as needed. Â It seems she's the only one working there! Â Needs better atmosphere too, it's rather dark with strange decorations, like a selection of random books on the shelf that don't really jive with the rest of the surroundings. Â Needs a lot of work to succeed, you're better off going to Kyoto.
Review Source:I've been there several times since it opened. The staff is very friendly and welcoming, but not much else is up to par.
The place lacks a good atmosphere. Some of the dishes can be quirky - we had a shrimp skewer with little light-up blocks on the plate. However, minus the special lunch items, most of the dishes are overpriced. It's still cheap, but definitely charges too much for the quality of food. Delivery chicken fried rice tastes a lot better than the ones served here.
This is a curious little place. Very small. I have never heard of an Asian Bistro, but I think it may be a translation thing, as exampled by some of the broken English in the menu.
There are several very interesting items on the menu I hope to try, and some old Americanized standard items you see on nearly every Chinese menu that I never order.
I can only judge this place by the lunch I had with my wife there today.
The lunch special menu is very affordable at $5.99 as of this review.
I ordered the "basil sauce" as it was listed on the menu. I chose the beef, which was a mistake. I did not like the brown sauce at all, it tasted like something from a jar in the Asian section of a supermarket...and not in a good way. The beef was very chewy and had a sort of pasty flour kind of taste but no seasoning built in to the beef itself or the stuff it was coated with (probably a rice flour or something like that). On the other hand the rest of my beef with basil sauce dish was very good. The vegetables were wonderful...I just wish it had a better sauce. The clear soup that came with the dish was good, but I could not get away from the sense that it was made from bouillon of some sort. (I cook, so I kind of have a taste for this stuff)
In contrast my wife ordered the Thai Curry (red). Although the curry was not red at all (server tried to explain that theirs is just different) it was delicious. I don't even like coconut curry and I thought it was fantastic. Her chicken was cooked nicely and was very tender and just like my dish the vegetables were wonderful. My wife said the spring roll she selected as her side option was good, but unremarkable otherwise.
Other than my tough and chewy beef and not-so-good "brown sauce" the only other complaint we had was that the dishes were served on a plate so shallow that it was impossible to eat without the sauce being pushed over the edge and on to the table to create a mess. Sometimes "cute" is not very functional.
We will be back to give them another try.
