Just saw A Flock of Seagulls @ new wave last night. Great show! Very intimate. Drinks were decently priced and cocktail list looked amazing. Jenette, our cocktail server was consistent, urgent, kind, personable, always smiling, and very helpful. Sound was rocky at first but like any show, you just have to work the kinks out. I will most definitely be revisiting this venue again in the near future.
Review Source:Went here to listen to some friends Depeche mode cover  band play (they were awesome btw!),
From the outside It looks a little scary but its a fun trip to the past. The walls are lined with 80's album covers and posters. The televisions playing what looks like the pioneer days of MTV. The menu pays tribute to the iconic pop culture of the decade (I had the karate kid quesadilla)
The food was nothing to write home about and the waitress seemed unorganized. To their defense I don't think they were expecting the turnout they had for the show so perhaps they were just overwhelmed with volume.
They have a separate room for karaoke. There was a handful of colorful folks in there singing obscure tunes. I got the feeling they were regulars and if you dare sing girls just wanna have fun they'd be outraged!
It was an odd but totally tubular evening. I'd definitely go again... Perhaps I'll brush up on my concrete blonde and storm the karaoke stage!
I have been in this place many times and really liked it when it first opened but
"progress" has only sent this place downhill for me. Â Seems every time I go in there now they have constant karaoke. Â It's basically turned into a karaoke bar which isn't my thing.
I liked going in here to listen to 80s music but now it's just a bunch of people singing occasional 80s music and not-so-eighties music like Adele (WTF?). I walked in last night and karaoke AGAIN. I asked the security guard if they had karaoke every night and he said either Mon-Thurs or Sun-Thurs. And Fri-Sat they have cover bands with a little DJing. Â Some of the cover bands are so-so. Â I just want to listen to a DJ playing 80s music. Â Hell, I'll even settle for a freaking iPod set to shuffle. Â Needless to say, I walked in and walked back out last night and went home instead.
The karaoke has been so bad that the last few times I was in here, with female friends, we decided to leave to go to the gay bar next door just so we wouldn't have to listen to karaoke. Â AND WE'RE BOTH STRAIGHT!
I doubt I'll be going back in here as much. Â Maybe on a weekend to see a REAL 80s band but if all it's going to be is karaoke during the week you can count me out. Â They can see my New Wave Goodbye as I drive by.
Only giving two stars because we came once-and probably wont be back to see if it was just an off night or if its the norm.
While New Wave advertises as an "80's bar". it misses the mark. This is more of an 80's punk/rock bar. There is no (80's) contemporary or pop tunes. If you are looking for ONLY the Ramones, or hardcore David Bowie-or a greasers pit-this is the place for you.
If you are looking for Sting, Prince, or Fine Young Cannibals, then this isnt the place for you at all.
Not a knock on the establishment-but they need to be more clear on their fine writing. This isnt an "80's bar", its an ""80's rock bar".
A great place for those who enjoy the 80's punk movement-but not for those looking for the whole 80's experience.
This place is so fun! They have a great selection of songs for karaoke, all fun 80's songs and even awesome cheesy songs too! haha so fun! The stage is perfect for all of your drunken karaoke antics!
Actual bands from the 80's always play here, also cover bands (Such as Flock a Goo Goo, the Depeche Mode cover band, etc), and rockabilly bands too. I came to see Gamblers Mark here recently.
So even though this place is super fun, it does have it's negatives. First big negative is that it is hot as fuck in here! Turn on a fan or open a window geezus! So it gets a little too crowded and hot for dancing sometimes but that's what the bar is for!
The bar is a little bit pricey, but eh whatever. The food is pretty good and the bar has a decent selection and of course the cheesy 80s decor is fabulous!
Like other reviews have mentioned people of all ages like to party here so it can be a bit of a cougar town at times, but if that's your thing surely you won't mind at all.
I also think the location is kind of random and far, but it's fun and worth the drive. And lastly parking sucks here, you'll probably have to park across the street at Norms and then you can eat there and sober up after before the long drive home. Also, they do have security here though! Which is always a plus
With all that being said I can't wait to come back and karaoke my heart out!
Love love love this place! Super awesome look and friendly staff! I went to one their karaoke nights with a groups of friends! The owner is super nice, down to earth and friendly. Always walks around and even sings when it's not super busy! The good was good cant complaint when you're drinking lol! Can't get enough if this awesome 80's spot! ^.^ Huge Adios bowl is awesome!!
Review Source:3.7
Goodtimes with a nice small group of girlfriends doing lots of locker room talk at this lovely joint :D
My gf wanted to hold a small gathering on a Monday (not my choice.) But hey some of these chicks got chicks and mens to babysit so Monday was the best we could do HEHE. That day was karaoke night and boy was it interesting and entertaining. I've only done karaoke once in koreatown, that was the first and last time I'd ever do that! unless im drunk the same way :p Service was good and drinks were AWESOME. At first I thought it was weird to have a bouncer there for a Monday but than again it is Bellflower and tooooo many 5150s lurk that city LOL. He was cute too and I don't even eat chocolate LOL ;) Â My gfs had some food and I have to say it was pretty good from what they ordered, especially the tator tots. Also the bathroom was clean(Thank god.)
My girlfriends and I had a blast and at one point more people began to show and sing. Overall I had fun and  im definitely coming back and can't wait to come on a 80s cover band type night!
This place is so much fun!!! Not for the superficial because it's not the best looking/chic  place like say something in dtla or Hollywood, but if you don't care about that sorta thing, you will have a blast here. It's no no dump either by any means, don't get me wrong. Good times!!!
Review Source:The 80s theme was cool, but that was about all I liked. Don't eat there - it's dirty and impossible to flag down a server to help you. The food we got was mediocre and we felt sick the next day. Menu was cute though, like "Depeche a la Mode."
They also have a problem circulating air. There were a couple of spots where you could stand under the air vent and get nice cold air, but anywhere else you are sweating like a hog. Based on some things I saw, they need a visit from a health inspector and a building inspector.
This place really isn't a restaurant or bar, it's just a club.
I love any and all things 80s. You probably won't catch me wearing my Madonna garb but you will catch me blasting some Flock of Seagulls or Duran Duran in my car. New Wave is like the 80s exploded all over the place (and I mean that in a good way). There's an old school Pac Man table, Ms Pac Man on the women's restroom door, an 80s themed menu with items like the Karate Kid Quesadilla and the waitresses even dress 80s. Out waitress was great too, super attentive and sweet.
That being said, is it a little run down and there's very few places to sit so if you do go, I suggest getting there early. There's also a $5 cover on weekends so be prepared for that. Parking is limited and then some. There's a teeny tiny lot on the side but even at 8pm on a Saturday, not a spot was to be found and the adjacent neighborhood seems to be pretty packed with cars all on it's own.
All in all, the DJ played some great 80s tunes, the cover band that played later wasn't bad and I loved that they played 80s music videos and movies on the TV screens. Not the nicest place you're ever going to visit but definitely not bad and makes for a fun Saturday night!
I've been into New Wave about ten times since it's opening and each night has been an event from drinking the house out of Blue Moon last Labor day to getting wildly drunk on my first visit and having an hour long discussion about taxation policy with the bartender to a few nights ago, when to celebrate my recent near 30 lb. weight loss in six weeks, some friends decided to set me up with some broad they knew. I arrived later in the evening as I had a dinner meeting which ran late, and my degree of handsomeness was so off the chart that she passed out about a minute after meeting me. Of course she tried to use the whole "I had too much to drink" excuse, but subtlety be damned, nothing but the truth shall work in my book. She shalln't be seen nor spoken to AGAIN! (Note, when I type "again" in all caps, that means it is pronounced Canadian style, as in "AGAYN!"). I tell you folks, being the world's most handsome does come with it's fair share of responsibility and power, just as Spider-Man said. Let the birds sing a song for the burden of beauty.
Back to the review, I usually have a good time here but periodically the crowd can be a bit rotund and pungent for my liking, which is why I stick to the nights when it's a bigger event which brings in the gorgeous crowd like myself. Drinks are moderately priced but I wish it was located in a better area. In the end, I can't wait for tomorrow because I get better looking every day.
I need to stress that the music is AMAZING and this is the best music that I've heard in an 80s bar in my dear Los Angeles.
But the establishment itself? Eh.
Cover is $5 and parking (given there are only about ten or less parking spots in the parking lot) is pretty much street parking in a shady area.
I didn't feel comfortable walking from my car to this establishment and vice versa.
The crowd is mostly older Hispanics in their 30s-40s. When I walked to the bar to order a drink and the first thing I notice is an older looking woman literally stare me up and down. I laughed and was a little scared. I had not encountered this type of behavior since middle school? High school? Seriously, who does that? Gangstas.
Given that I was the designated driver, I only had one drink the whole night. The prices are definitely reasonable so that's always great to a student budget :)
I feel that this place is definitely going to get more popular, it has great potential. I hope that the crowd changes and becomes a little bit more diversified.
I'd definitely come back and give this place a second chance because there is no other place where you will hear legitimate 80s, Modern Talking you say? Win.
For a small little hole in the wall the place is pretty cool. Â We came here on a Saturday and were able to grab one of the bar tables next to the wall when an INXS cover band was setting up for their gig. Â We also paid a $5 cover but I believe cover can get higher when there's actual bands performing. Â Since the place is so small, it's standing room only for the most part unless you're going to hang in the back room where the restaurant section is. Â
The music was good, the drinks were pricey (never tried the food) and the cover band was decent. Â I'd come back after the hype dies down but was glad I gave the place a try.
I visited this place for the first time recently and took my sister with me when Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons was there.
Since I'm not a great dancer nor a party animal anymore, I wasn't sure of what to expect.
I must say that this place "ROCKS". I have never seen so many middle aged 80's fanatics shaking booty all at once in my life. We had so much fun. We met several cool people and got their numbers with the understanding that we will meet up again there. Richard Blade, as always was awesome. Missing Persons, also awesome. $200 bar tab, not so cool. Lol
I am now glued to my computer waiting for  BERLIN to be announced. I cannot even imagine being there with Berlin and Terry Nunn in such a small venue. Terry Nunn is also awesome. What would be perfect is Richard Blade opened for her since they are such good friends.
Came in here with my girlfriend for St. Patrick's day to meet up with some friends. Â The 80's vibe was cool, and the menu items on the food had some pretty Gnarly names. Â The food was good, we shared the Bill & Ted's Excellent Tater Tots, Culture Club sandwich, and some Doc Browns
I think coming on St. Patrick's day was a bad idea to come here for the first time, as it's more about about being Green than Totally Tubular so I couldn't truly appreciate the vibe as I could on a regular night. Â They were playing "Leprechaun" on the TV which I haven't seen in a few years so I watched it for most of the night.
I'll update this review after my next visit.
The drinks are reasonably priced, the music was great (all 80's and not a song I didn't like) with a mixed age group of patrons. The music wasn't so loud that you couldn't hear yourself think. I guess I just gave away which age group I fall into. To call this place a restaurant is a bit of a stretch. The bottom line is it served it's purpose on getting my 80's music fix. I almost forgot to mention, the movie Top Gun was playing on a loop on two LCD TV's behind the bar. Does it get any better then that.
Review Source:This place is FUN! My friend Dunnaree had her last bday party here and it was a blast. They don't have cheese fries, so I got tater tots with nacho cheese and sour cheese--not the smoothest move. I wish I would have been more adventurous and delved more into the 80s food and beverage on the menu. I saw they had Singapore Slings after I already ordered my Blue Moon with an orange.
We were in the party room and got to watch a Duran Duran cover band (complete with 80s attire and British accents). The staff was really nice and went out of their way to make sure we were fed, watered and happy. It's hard to get good service anywhere these days. So, I was impressed and will be back--hopefully on a night with karaoke.
The only downer about this place is that it's like 20 or 30 miles from mine, so I can have a good time but can't party too hard. Still...fun, fun, fun! Oh and make sure to get there early to avoid the cover charge and long ass lines to get in on the weekend.
Here for a birthday party on Saturday night, and I really wanted to hate hate hate this place. Â It's such dump, and they charge you $5-10 upon entry. Â Food and drinks are lousy. Â It's dirty and unkept. Â There' s potential riff raff waiting to happen at every turn (we witnessed the aftermath of a scuffle). Â However, the longer we stayed... the more tolerable the place became. Â People were genuinely having fun and so the energy was high. Â Would I come back here again on my own... hell no! Â but the place was spirited, which is why I gave it an "A-Ok" rather than a "Meh".
Review Source:Its the 80s baby. Came here Saturday night, and loved it. The DJ, the music, the drinks. The only downfall was the surprising waiting line outside for 40-1hr wait. Had no idea how small this place was so it would fill up. Come earlier before 9 or 8 atleast. Other than that, I sweated all night dancing to the tunes and didn't wanna stop!! its contagious in there and I felt like I was the youngest one there, definitely mostly older crowds were there. But not bad at all =)
Review Source:showed up on a saturday nite and the line was wrapped around the building...meanwhile its freezing outside....went and ask the bouncer if they were letting people in and he said no....they had hit there max....was looking forward to it but now I am glad I didn't go. I don't think ill ever go there anyway. They should invest in a bigger place
Review Source:Disappointing. Â
I take my 80s seriously, being a genXer who used to see the bands on their walls. I've actually had this place bookmarked on my "to-do" for a year, often mentioning it to random friends and debating whether or not to do a party here. Â It's a bit far for me, so when I finally found myself in that neck of the woods I had to make the effort to check it out. Â I was greeted by the bouncer who mentioned that there was a $5 cover now and a $10 cover later. I asked if I could peek inside and I'm glad I didn't pay anything. They had a nice bar area, but that's about it. Â The place consists of three rooms: bar/entrance, stage/dance area, and a room with plastic folding tables that reminded me of something that someone would have put together in their garage to throw an 80s party. Is that supposed to be the restaurant? The tiny display case of 80s items was a nice thought, but appeared ridiculous in the large room. Â I did like the posters along the walls. Â Think divebar, not "restaurant".
What a great concept to do an 80s theme! But poor execution. I guess if it was full of people and the 80s music was going, it would serve as a distraction from the lackluster surroundings and could be fun. Â Love that they are getting some original 80s bands in, along with the cover bands, and even Richard Blade who I love as a DJ... but I feel bad for the artists who show up and see that place for the first time. Â Perhaps I would give it a second shot if they had a good band in... but the place just made me sad. The pictures posted really gave me a different impression of what it actually was. Â
It's close to the 91 fwy. Â Neighborhood is sketchy.
My friend recommended this place to us for cheap drinks, tacos, karaoke, and 80s music. We came on a Tuesday night and it was fairly crowded. It took some time to warm up to the place but then it isn't so bad after. Friendly crowd around 30s and 40s, $2 beers, $1 tacos, and karaoke! We didn't order any food but I saw they had some good appetizers.
Review Source:Lately I've been trying to acquire Yelp! fame and recognition; hence, I have been going out to bars in my area and checking in and whatnot. After reading some rave reviews of certain bars by my fellow yelpers, I chose to go to a bar without such rave reviews. Although the reviews were not very enticing, I somehow felt compelled to be at this bar this particular night.
Walking up to the place after being dropped off by a helicopter, I wasn't very impressed with the squalid appearance of the building --but of course, never judge a book by its cover. Once I walked into the place, though, it reinforced my first impression and I cringed at the sights and odors. I felt like a fool for making such an ostentatious entrance to such a place.
Anyway, when I saw that they played New Wave and 80's, I thought to myself: well, new wave and 80's? Maybe I'll run into hipsters and young-ish people who appreciate the sounds of that decade-- I missed the mark! I was greeted by people in their 30's and by some people who looked like they were in their 30's or 20's....in the 80's.
The bartenders seemed to be a bit overwhelmed by the beer guzzling old-timers, and so they weren't very attentive. I think I waited around 20 minutes before I got my first beer. I waited so long that I even learned the name of the bartender --Jennifer-- before I got my beer. It might've been because I was sitting next to people who the bar tender apparently knew, and so I guess she thought that if anyone from my side needed anything, we would simply call her name; eventually I did call her name.
Also, this awkward little building wasn't designed to be a place for entertainment; from where I was sitting at, I could only see the bartender, the people who were right behind me --who were passionately talking shit about one of their friends and whose conversations revolved around facebook,( and these are 30 year olds, people)--, and I could only see parts of the small stage they had for karaoke. This place is pretty small, but I still couldn't get a good view of anything. There were some pillars in between me and the stage, so if I wanted to see the people on the stage and not just a side of the stage, I had to crane my neck and move my head side to side like an ostrich looking out for predators. But since I was sandwiched between the counter and the people behind me, I couldn't get my ostrich on very well. That's another thing, there was so little space to move around (since there were quite a few tables and lots of people), that you pretty much were confined to one place. Terrible.
In conclusion, I didn't enjoy myself very mucho. Hope you guys enjoyed this review, because that helicopter ride cost me a pretty penny, and I won't have funds for the next few months.
So we were searching for a place to go New Year's Eve. No, not a Hollywood place with $50 cover and $300 bottle service full of attitude. Just a nice place to hang out. So after driving around Southeast LA County in circles (thanks GPS), we finally this divey looking restaurant. Got there just at 7 - crowd seemed to be mixed 30s and 40s - just a few youngsters and nobody menacing. We found a table - and ordered pasta. For $9, small portions but tasty with marinara sauce and garlic bread. I ordered a Richard Blade drink (named after a famous dj) and found it too sweet. My wife ordered a Corona. $4 - $5 for beers and $8 for drinks - seemed about average - then again my bar days are over.
The fun started with the karaoke. Although no one was American Idol material, everyone gave it their earnest effort. It was fun listening to the Motels, Pet Shop Boys, and Human League - although their definition of 80s was stretching it with a 70s song by Queen and Vogue by Madonna. Another nice thing was that they had a picture booth where we had some cheesy photos made of us. An overly enthusiastic photo guy mentioned he was Filipino and when we told him we lived in Daly City, he mentioned that we probably knew half his relatives.
Service was nice and attentive too. The other room w/o karaoke had loud 80s music playing. There was a band set up but we left at 10 before they started playing.
All in all a good time, It was nice to celebrate 2013 like we felt and looked in 1983!
Last night was my second visit. Â The first tine was in late 2011 before seeing The Cure. I almost drove past it because the outside look run down and nothing about it looked like an 80's themed restaurant at all, Â besides the business sign.
We arrived 15 minutes after it opened, Â so we weren't surprised to be the first ones there. We went to the bar immediately and the bartender greeted us warmly and took our order. We ordered the '' Bill and Ted's Excellent Cheesy Tots. '' They were definitely tasty. For drinks we, of course, Â ordered ''The Cure.'' It was ok, Â but for our next round we ended up just ordering our usual drinks. After we indulged in some fried goodies, Â we wandered around and took pictures with the many posters and even snapped a pick with a Slimer plush doll from Ghostbusters. My friend and I were really enjoying the nostalgia of it all. Â After finishing our drinks, Â we headed out to get our Robert Smith fix.
Last night was my second visit. I went for a date. We arrived almost two hours after it opened. We were the first ones there again. No one greeted us at all. There was a hostess stand, Â but no hostess. We wandered around and employees saw us, Â but never approached us or even took notice of our existence. They looked like they were still opening up, Â so we decided to have dinner somewhere else and come back for drinks.
An hour later we returned and were happy to see people were finally arriving. We found an empty table and a waitress immediately greeted us and provided the drink specials. $2 drafts, Â a great deal, Â but we were interested in some mixed drinks. We gave our waitress our order, Â which was two ''Thriller'' martinis (I'm a huge Michael Jackson fan and the ingredients seemed promising) and an ''E. T.'' sundae. Â The drinks arrived pretty quickly and the presentation was great, Â but we didn't enjoy them. The vodka and melon liqueur were overwhelming and I barely tasted the raspberry liqueur. Â Being a bartender myself, Â I found myself thinking of ways it'd be more enjoyable. I ended up just chugging the martini to get rid of it and got a simple rum and coke. Â The ''E.T.'' however, was more than we expected. It was four enormous scoops of vanilla ice cream with chocolate and caramel syrup, Â a mound of whipped cream, Â and sprinkled Reeses pieces on top. Â I can't believe we finished it, Â but we thoroughly enjoyed it and even was approached by a waitress saying seeing ours made her want one as well. Â
My date and I enjoyed the 80's music and watching The Princess Bride on one of the tvs, Â but found ourselves wishing that the music videos playing on tvs by the stage, Â were playing instead of the DJ's music. We were confused for a long time why karaoke hadn't started when they posted that it was going on that night and didn't even realize it was in the other room until after we were on our way out. There should really be signs or someone telling you were and whats going on. When we peeked our heads in to see what was going with karaoke, no one seemed happy and the singers weren't great. This I don't mind as long as you seem like you're enjoying yourself. We debated a little to stay and do some karaoke, but decided just to head and go home.
All in all, Â I've love the 80's theme, Â but it's more of a bar than restaurant. Â Despite the disappointment in our drinks, Â we're optimistic and plan on making a second vist in the future. We really want to try out the karaoke.
So if you are looking for a nice restaurant, Â I wouldn't suggest here, Â but uf you a are looking for some late night 80's themed fun, Â give tge place a shot. I truly believe and hope if we arrived around 10-11pm there would have been more people.
Been wanting to check this place out for a while. Came in around 8 on a night when nothing was going on and still had a $5 cover which I thought was lame. I shouldn't have to pay you 5 bucks so I can buy your overpriced drinks.
Besides that this place was my kind of place. Good music and Fun titles on the menus. The bartender was REALLY NICE and even told us about some not on the menu drinks when we weren't sure what to get. Later in the night when it got busy at the bar the service was still quick.
If you want to sit where the action is get there early cause there are only a couple of tables but they do have a dining section away from the stage
Overall, will be returning on a night when a band is playing or they do karaoke =]
Went last night to see an Oingo Boingo cover band. Â The event was sold out online, so I emailed to find out about purchasing tickets at the door. Â I received a reply in a couple of hours that I could purchase tickets at the door at 7pm. Â Kudos to their management for answering emails during non-business hours!
Don't be scared of the exterior looks and the bars on the windows! Â The inside is actually nice and wasn't the "Dive" that I had pictured in my mind. Â 80's band album art adorns the walls, as well as movie posters. Â I especially liked the Weird Science poster in the men's restroom.
After the band played, the DJ continued with great 80's tunes.  The drinks were reasonably priced and my buddy seemed to enjoy his nachos with cheese goo and jalapeño peppers.
Can't wait to return for more 80's music and dancing. Â Hopefully I will return when Richard Blade is DJ'ing. Â I may even order his named rum drink.
I will be recommending this place to my friends who enjoy 80's music and dancing.
You really can't get a feel for a place unless you been there at least a couple of times. Â Just like geometry, you need two points to draw a line. Â Sadly, I've drawn the line here.
Monday is one of their karaoke nights, so I decided to go in after work and try another obscure 80s song. Â There was the same size group as last time, which would be great if it weren't for the fact that the cocktail waitress was serving more water than drinks. Â Karaoke singers are notoriously cheap (I used to do this myself) and only order a couple drinks then drink water all night.
Had three pints of Bud Light and an hour and fifteen minutes later did my one song ("Hunting High and Low" by a-ha); never did it before, mucked up the end and only got a smattering of applause from three people. Â So, if you're the new kid on the block, don't expect much from the other singers. Â Just like the 80s, it's as cliche-ish here as it was in junior high school.
They have a New Wave Karaoke Facebook page, so I commented on the extremely long wait time. Â Had a nice dialogue between the KJ and how he runs his rotation (strictly off a list with no jumping, friends/tipper sing first, etc.) and some comments from other singers.
Saving grace was the bartender gal was quick with my beers (but it's draft beer, not a complicated pour and she wasn't too busy when I was there) and they play 80s movies when you're waiting an eternity to sing (saw the last part of "Coming to America" and the beginning of "Fright Night").
Monday appears to be their busy night with a 15+ singer rotation, so be prepared to wait. Â KJ suggested I try a different night...I'll try when my silly security schedule allows.
This review is for Saturday, 9/29. Â This is my second visit and I was so happy to hear the major improvement in the music! Â The DJ was awesome and played a great variety from the 80's. Â Loved it!!
However, the room where you're supposed to dance is a sweat box!! Â I would love to see some ceiling fans in that room just to help circulate some air. Â The dance floor was packed and it was too hot! Â And the ladies bathroom is even hotter!!
Also, around 11:00pm Cholo type guys started invading the dance floor just to stand around?? Â Then a fight broke out shortly after!! Â So sad to see a great night ruined by people that shouldn't be there in the first place.
I'd like to go back but I'm not sure I want to deal with the drama. Â =(
This place is totally tubular awesome......
I brought my girlfriend to celebrate her birthday not even knowing that Tiffany, yes The Tiffany ( I think where alone now) was going to perform this Friday night, with that being said we had to pay an entrance fee of $10.00 each. No problem.
One inside it was not at all what I expected, One room is mainly for dining under the black lights so yes the neon menus do change color and everything is all visible under the black light so beware..We couldn't help but indulge in some Marty McFries and Richard Blade Rum Runners, Pretty in Pink shots, a Depeche mode and a Duran Duran to enjoy the night ( all cocktail drinks)
It's a very spacious area, but lacking big time in parking. Â We had to park directly across the street in front of norms or take a chance in the residential area. This is a great place to have a get together with friends or celebrate a birthday.
I recommend if you just want to drink and enjoy the music stay in the room with the tables and black lights ( they have a screen to view the dance floor)
If your intention is too dance as we did, prepare to sweat allot, not only because of the great non stop 80's music spun by The Richard Blade himself but the dance floor area is small and there is no circulation in that area.. it's a sweat box.
This place is mixed crowd with all ages of 21+ to 50 year olds, I kid you not enjoying themselves.
I see this place succeeding not because of the gimmicks of the 80's posters, movies played on the TV or the decor but simply because the music is fabulous.
I swear I don't have ADD, but the menu was seriously a trip. Â The waitress literally had to come back three times to take my order because I couldn't stop staring at it. Â If I was on mushrooms or any other hallucinogenic drug, I'm sure I would have been in heaven, but I wasn't. Â Why was this menu so weird? Â It's in fluorescent colors and there are moving black lights on the ceiling. Â It changes so fast that your eyes take a second to focus, and when they are- it's changing colors again. Â Trick: Â Hold your phone light across the menu. Â It makes for a better viewing experience. Â Once you've ordered, continue to trip out on said magic menu.
The food was decent. Â I got the Top Gun Burger that was a regular burger topped with pastrami. Â Pretty delish. Â What really tickled my fancy was that it was served with tater tots and I think everything tastes better with tater tots. Â A friend ordered a serving of Bill & Ted's Excellent Tater Tots. Â Again, you add tater tots to the mix and you have my approval. Â Was it anything groundbreaking? Â No- it was just tater tots covered with nacho cheese and sour cream. But again, highly caloric and delicious.
I wasn't as adventurous with the drinks. Â I stuck to Blue Moon for the night but the drinks looked colorful in the black lights. Â I heard some were a hit and others were a miss. Â They did order The Terminator drink that came in a gigantic glass that had multiple straws poking out for sharing. Â I'm not a fan of those- I'm sort of a germaphobe and all I could think about was the amount of backwash that was going to be floating at the top. Â But if you're into that, then you'll probably be happy. Â I'm a one glass per person kinda guy.
Now, just a warning. Â The black lights don't just affect the drinks and the menu- they affect the look of your food too. Â I think that is a miss because at some points your food looks amazing, other points it looks like a glob of... well- you know. Â But if you close your eyes and take in the great nostalgic music, I think it will be an oversight. Â I however, still liked the place and can't wait to go back, dance and eat oddly named foods while sipping on some cleverly titled drinks.
PS- if you're not into loud places and want to be able to converse comfortably with your guests, I would avoid this place all together. Â It's pretty damn noisy. Â It's basically a cool club with food.
I was not fond of having to pay a $5 cover for a new wave bar/restaurant.
The place is pretty spacious - there weren't that many people there, I think the dance-floor area was the crowded part. The music was your typical 80s. Mix of crowd, young and older.
I think this place could have more potential if it had a better "80s" theme. Their website made it seem like you're going into a place of the past with the PacMan entrance, posters, and other things but it was nothing spectacular.
Their jukebox only plays 80s music, I remember clearly that it said any other music will be skipped.
It would've been cool if they changed the music up. Instead of listening to the same classic songs, mixing it up with some new-wave inspired music would've picked it up a bit more.
I think the biggest perk for people who live nearby is that they don't have to drive to Hollywood or other areas to get their own place for 80s music.
Unfortunately, I doubt I'll be back here. This place was not for me.
Had the pleasure of visiting on a Thursday night and I had a great time with my friend. The place is easy to find off of Lakewood Blvd. (across from Norms), street parking is simple, and no cover! Arrived around 10ish and the place was pretty empty but within an hour it began to fill up. The DJ played 80's and Spanish rock...I absolutely loved it! The drinks are fair priced and the bartenders were really cool. There are 2 rooms and on our way out I noticed the smaller room was singing karaoke, I will definitely be trying that out next time. Loved the 80's decor and the drink names.
This is a fun place. Not sure how weekends are but I would want to return on a Thursday again. They sell food as well but I didn't try any, seems like pretty standard bar food. I recommend riding this NEW WAVE ;)
No more "Late Night Happy hour"
Im not cheap, i supported this place when it opened and refered it to alot of people-- wish they would of gave me a "lifetime" card for permanet happy hour prices. lol..
Update time:
Its still "okay," it just gets too crowded, they removed late night happy hour, they now have a cover charge(wtf?!!), crowd is pretty iffy too, the music is still good and If it wasnt for my love for 80s music i wouldnt visit here anymore.
If you're in the area, love 80s music, dont mind a "scruffy/raunchy" crowd, dont mind a small venue that gets overcrowded and have good peeps with ya i suggest you try it.... It isnt all that bad for a drink & some good 80s tunes.
to be honest, i was expecting this place to be like the Back to the Future II's 80s cafe with bright colors and cool gadgets, it sadly was not. Â I also was expecting it to be a bit cooler, as other 80s clubs/bars are. C for Effort, D for divey, and another C for crack money, which I was asked for when I left.
Also parking sucks and the area is shady, and why was there a cover?
Totally 80's! NOT!
Okay, so I tried this place out because I heard so much about it. Since I like the 80's, I figured it would be a cool spot.
To sum up what I think about this place in once sentence, it would go like this:
It's a nice try, but the food needs some work.
I have to admit, the theme is great and this place has great potential. Again, the 80's theme is fun and they had some really clever names for their food and drinks.
They had 80's music going as well as 80's movies playing on the wall. Although, I did find it odd that there were some non-80's tracks being played. What's up with that? Or sort of spoiled it a little bit, but I got over it since they were also playing "Revenge of the Nerds" on the screen.
One of the waitresses was dressed in 80's attire. I have to say, I thought she was pretty hot. Too bad she wasn't our waitress. We had some dude, who was actually very pleasant and friendly. That's one thing to note for sure. The staff is actually very nice.
They have 80's movie posters along the walls such as Ghostbusters, and more. They also had album covers as well such as Modonna and other popular 80's bands. I also even noticed the table top arcade games as you walk in.
I ordered the Chicken Sandwich. I forgot what clever 80's theme name it had. My friend ordered the Cheese Burger. Again, I don't remember what clever 80's name that had as well. You can look at their website for their menu. It has all the clever names.
I have to agree with another Yelper here. The meat patty on that burger sort of resembled the frozen patties that you get at Costco. It didn't seem like fresh ground beef to me. That was really a buzz kill.
My chicken sandwich was a little dry, but I did order it without Mayo so that's probably my fault. The Cibatta bread was a bit too much. It was huge, dry, and untoasted. I wanted it on wheat, but they didn't have any. Bummer!
I guess I have to agree with another Yelper here that the food was more like "bar food" than a real restaurant food.
Honestly, I really wanted to like this place since I hear so many locals really like it. I guess for a bar, it's great! As far as a restaurant, it could use some work.
I gave it 3 stars because I think it's definitely a nice try. If they freshen up the ingredients for their meals then I think it would be a stellar place to chill, eat, and drink.
