I've been dying for a nice hot pastrami sandwich for a while. New York Cafe is not the place to get one. Despite the name and New York City-ish interior decor, this is just another food place. But it is good, there aren't too many decent hamburgers is this part of Lafayette.
I arrived after 1 pm for lunch and there were a couple diners despite it being a holiday weekend. The menu has breakfast, salads, burgers and sandwiches, steaks and pasta dishes. Nothing fancy, just decent midwestern-style food.
After my initial disappointment of not finding pastrami, I settled on a patty melt and fries. The sandwich came out as advertised - grilled rye bread with a large juicy hamburger patty with grilled onions and melted American cheese. All sandwiches also come with lettuce, tomato and onions on the side (makes a nice little salad). The fries were my favorite style - Â thick cut. They were crispy and seasoned with salt and pepper. The meal hit the spot. With drink, it was under $10.
I want to try the breakfast menu the next time I'm in town.
New York Cafe is located in a older, somewhat deserted strip mall on the corner of State Street and Earl. It shares the space with a Mexican restaurant (pretty good).
