Love this place. Great french onion soup! Awesome beer selection and they are even open in the winter after all the tourist have left. Stop by and grab the seat near the fireplace. PS I am looking for the wooden nickels that they give you when you buy a beer. If you have any that you want to get rid of or would like to sell please email me.
Review Source:Cool British-style pub in the old whaling village of Edgartown (don't get your hopes up--unfortunately there is no actual whale on the menu), housed in a building that is older than America itself (1742!). I am a complete history dork so this was right up my alley, and the stonework walls and exposed wooden ceiling beams (original, I was told) give the Newes an authentic pub feel. The fact that Edgartown is not one of the Vineyard's several dry towns also helps, as the serving of beer is pretty crucial to the "authentic pub feel".
To that end we started with a round of nutbrown ales from the Offshore Ale Co., brewed right there on the island. Delicious. I got my Molly Malone on and had the cockles & mussels for dinner. When I ordered the waitress asked if I wanted a side of bread to soak up the broth in which the shellfish is served. I agreed, somewhat dismissively, because how good could a bowl of clam juice be that I'm going to need my own side of bread (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DSP_9zH9Q44o&s=2d4877b77d9f0a8e246b526a8e2534a58f243a115422b334ed307d3db2e70cf0" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.youtube.com/w…</a>)? I'll be damned if I didn't nearly bite the hand off that selfsame waitress for trying to clear my plate before I had sopped up every last drop of that sweet, sweet broth. Really outstanding. The lady had the lobster mac n' cheese (with BACON) that was phenomenal but so intensely rich that we couldn't even finish off the entire order between 4 people. Auntie had a reuben that looked fairly amazing. I didn't even notice what Uncle had because the big bastard polished off his plate in about 8 seconds, and then started sniffing around the lobster mac.
Most items on Martha's Vineyard are outlandishly expensive, even by my warped San Francisco standards, but the Newes is one of the more reasonably priced places to grab a bite, certainly in that area. We were attempting to treat the Aunt & Unc to dinner as a thank-you for letting us stay with them on our vacation, but my aunt slyly palmed her credit card and thrust it on the waitress before I could even get my hands on the bill, the sneaky, generous jerk.
