We've been coming to the Newes since it opened in this form. The attractions are the room (built in 1742 and probably a pub of some kind most of that time...rich with history and maybe ghosts); the beer, which is plentiful, varietal, reasonably priced and served COLD; the wooden nickel gimmick; and the location, which is in the middle of Edgartown bustle but feels removed, as you're in a Colonial era basement. The food is pub food, done well but not amazingly, and priced fine for the ZIP code. Very kid friendly, with two bars (so very adult friendly too). Generally the service has been solid, never great, but this year it was poor...poor like asking four times for obvious stuff...poor like a beer not being served "to my empty seat" even though there were three adults along with four kids at the table while I parked...poor like dressing coming 10 minutes after the salad. Still, 20-30 positive visits and one marginal one I'll give it four stars. If we get pitiful service again next time, I may revise. The waitress was borderline snotty, even though we went out of our way to not get short with her horrible service, and we had a big enough table to get the high auto tip. (PS I've stayed almost everywhere on MV at one point or another and while we now do houses not hotels I do like the Kelley House, if your goal is a boutique/historical accommodation near the harbah...Daggett House was our favorite in that little area around the Chappy ferry but alas is no more...)
Review Source:I am a frequent visitor of Edgartown, and an even more frequent visitor of the Newes. This is by far my favorite restaurant on the island. Though it is a casual place, I love to put on my fanciest dress and come here. Anything you get on the menu will be delicious. Whenever I go, our group will get a few apps and meals to split. The crab, artichoke and spinach dip with toasted pitas is delectable, the lobster mac and cheese is INSANE, the chowder is some of the best, burgers are good, anything else you see on that menu is GREAT. My favorite part of this restaurant has to be the atmosphere and location, tied with the rack of beers. You get to sample (well, more than sample) some excellent beers with amazing flavor, that will certainly get you more than tipsy. The lime and light is one of my favorites -- has a great taste that is not too limey like some of those other lime beers. For every rack or large beer you get, you receive 2 wooden nickels. When you get to 500, you receive your own mug with your name engraved on it. 1000 nickels gets your own personal stool at the bar with your name on it for that year. Pretty cool. I came here once and a two man jazz band was playing. Very intimate and lovely. Just the best place ever -- couldn't ask for anything more -- except when they run out of wooden nickels...
Come here. You will fall in love, and will always be coming back -- just like me :)
PS -- I have 40 nickels. Anyone who doesn't want theirs, PLEASE send my way!
I was so disappointed in the food at The News. This once wonderful pub still has great ambience, a helpful, friendly staff, prime location and a menu that sounds delicious, however... The food is just not good.
Three of us went in for lunch on Sunday, and non of us were impressed with our sandwiches. We ordered a Reuben, a pulled pork and a Thanksgiving sandwich, and all were just lackluster - like the idea was there, but the execution wasn't. The sauerkraut on the Reuben was just greasy, griddled cabbage, the pulled pork was runny and tasteless, and the turkey on the Thanksgiving sandwich was dry and a touch gamey, without a dollop of mayo to help it along.
That said, the service was tops - we were immediately greeted by a super-friendly manager, seated in a great spot and our server was cheerful and quick. I can see this being an excellent spot for beers and conversation, but unfortunately the food misses, which is key for me.
I really wanted to give this place four stars, but the food was just alright. Â By that I specifically mean the burger - nothing hugely special. Â The reasons this place gets a positive review are:
1 Â It's on the Vineyard - a plus already
2 Â Good divey atmosphere
3 Â Blueberries in the beer...
That's right, you heard me. Â They put fresh blueberries in the beer there. Â when I ordered a draft from Maine or someplace like that, the bartender asked me if I wanted blueberries in my beer. Â I kind of looked at him and asked are you kidding me? Â He said no, so I replied, hey, whatever you do here, I'm new. Â So he put about a dozen blueberries in there which floated around inside and when I tried it I was a convert. Â Blueberries in your beer while on the Island, it's a good thing...
Terribly overpriced and under-seasoned food. I didn't even eat my Mahi Mahi sandwich with avocado salsa...it's a shame when the coleslaw is the tastiest part of the meal. My boyfriend's chicken sandwich was more edible but it was completely unmemorable. The only thing that WAS memorable was paying $3.75 for a draft root beer that was actually a mug of ice cubes and about 2-3 sips of (albeit yummy) soda. Find another spot.
Review Source:Kicked off our weekend on the Vineyard at Newes and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Partly bc we were on the vineyard with great friends but also bc the food and beers! I ordered the fish and chips. It was delish! My husband ordered a pasta dish special that had chorico... I had a bite and it was great! They had a decent selection of beers from brewerys in the area. I saw some from Providence, RI and was excited and asked the server if she knew which brewery and she had no clue. I mean, I didn't expect her to know but since that's really all they offer and from the fact that she knew someone's order at our table before they ordered (he's a regular), it showed she's been there for quite some time so she probably should know not only the food menu, but also the beer menu. I tried the Lime & Light and it was very refreshing. I wanted to try and go back before the end of our trip for another but never had the chance.
So if you go, don't ask what brewery a specific beer is from and try the Lime & Light!
Oh and a cool thing about this bar... every 16oz beer you order, you get a token... every scooner (23oz) you get two tokens... save like a thousand or something crazy like that and you get your name printed on their hall of fame... I think it was called declaration or something... but it was pretty cool. My friend and her father are on there.
We were searching for a place that was open in the off season. Could not have been happier with our meal by the fireplace. Reubens and burgers, and local beers. Service was friendly and attentive. Not sure where the snarky comments are coming from. I can see how the service might get TOO relaxed for some people, but our experience was great. The portions were fine, and I always have an appetite. the coconut shrimp, better than I expected.
Review Source:My husband and I make it a point to have a meal here every summer after I fell in love with the lobster mac n cheese. This year I was shocked to find out that this dish was removed from the menu! Following my minor panic attack, I decided to go for the clam chowder and my husband chose the fish and chips. Â Both dishes were very good but, please bring back the lobster mac n cheese!!!
Review Source:Great simple pub food. My kids loved the root beer on tap. $5 extra for pasta with the mussels?? How are you supposed to enjoy the good broth? My kids we dipping French fries in Mom's bowl and there are no rolls that come with it. Burger came out well done vs. medium rare. They offered to redo it an ended up comping it. Very nice staff. We would go again.
Review Source:If you knicked the walls of Newes with a knife, I'm pretty sure they would literally bleed New England.
This place is a nice little respite from the white walls, shining floors, and popped collars of many other Edgartown joints. It's tucked into the basement level of the building, which helps keep it blessedly cool during the summer, and the place is adorned with old-fashioned wall lanterns, 17th century newspapers, and dark exposed wood beams (you know, between the giant flatscreens showing sporting events du jour). It's also a place where you could just as easily see a group of 20somethings watching a game or a family with young kids taking a break, and the staff are friendly without being overbearing. Overall, it's a nice and laid-back, approachable vibe.
The food is pretty straightforward, tasty pub grub (try the artichoke dip... it's served cold and creamy and comes with a heaping stack of fresh, hot pita bread), and there are a ton of local brews on tap. The prices here are in the lower middle end of the pack for the area, which is especially nice considering the quality of the atmosphere and food offerings.
Don't get the appeal here. Â I suppose it's a less expensive option in Edgartown, but it's not terribly good.
Started off on wrong foot with hostess, would had odd energy. Â Seemed overwhelmed and was not communicative. Â Finally got her to tell us the wait would be 30 mins.
It's very casual, which is no big deal in my book, but know that you are basically getting a tavern like setting.
Waitress was pleasant, but recommended the Roquefort stilettos, which were crostini over-piled with blue cheese and bacon. These were basically inedible. Â And given this was an app, really left a gross cloud over the rest of the meal.
The blue crab cakes were probably the best dish, but again...a bit heavy on the sauce.
The BBQ pulled pork was fine, as was the fish and chips (anywhere from "serviceable" to a shade greasy).
All in all, not for us. Absolutely not a 4 star spot
Finally somewhere you can let that popped collar relax a little in downtown Edgartown (maybe throw it to a half-pop- it's still Edgartown). Â Solid pub with a nice vibe offering better than average bar food and a bunch of delicious local beers on tap. They play off the colonial theme with plenty of dark wood beams and menus fashioned after 17th century newspapers, complete with old timey script.
I've been here with larger groups and as a twosome, and never had to wait a terribly long time for a table. The food has always been a pleasant surprise- I particularly like their sandwich options which never seem to disappoint but found the entrees to be solid as well (they have legit Bangers'n'Mash). We recently went in and sat at one of the two bars to split an order of their fish'n'chips. The fish was outstanding- flaky with a great fry and tangy tartar sauce on the side. While we were there I sampled some of their draft beer options-- they have their two house brews Good Newes & Good Newes Light, a porter and an IPA from Berkshire Brewing Co., Otter Creek, Seadog Blueberry & MV's own Offshore Nut Brown Ale to name just a few.
This trip was the first time I learned about their 'Declaration of Superiority' Wall. For every beer you get, they'll give you a wooden knickel (check it out: <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/EFRc8Tnzna6FGik4Vjwdhg?select=2y1j_kdPm52NlMDvDcZxKA#RxinlrFLOP_fNTX9bXv-zA">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>). Once you hit 500 you make it on their 'Declaration of Superiority' scroll and get your own engraved mug. How did I find out about this so late? Oh well, it's only more incentive to return. 2 down, 498 to go.
had dinner on Sunday night, good food great service. Â A tad casual and cheap for MV, but definitely served it's purpose. Â We had the burger, chix sandwich and pulled pork sandwich. Â All were good and served as requested.
Not the best food in the world, but great for the price and area.
The Newes pub has a nice cozy atmosphere in the off-season with a fireplace and small friendly crowds. We went in on Christmas Eve and had a great relaxing dinner. The food was very tasty (the lobster roll initially looked a little small but it was packed with lobster and a great sauce with capers and turned out to be a perfect size) and the onion rings were phenomenal! They even accommodated a picky eater in our group by combining elements of two dishes and it turned out great. Finally, the root beer that is on tap is delicious! I will definitely be back the next time I am on the Vineyard.
Review Source:Lobster Mac and cheese was great. Â Huge chunks of lobster w bacon, breadcrumbs, and cheese. Â Only improvement would be if it was a bit creamier. Garlic green beans were great too. Looking forward to going back before we leave the island. Also clam chowder was incredible. Tried it at the chowder competition. Amazing!! Â Creamy w a great flavor. Think their was bacon in there which gave it almost a smokey flavor. Awesome.
Review Source:Had a great casual lunch here. Nice selection of local beers and our pub- style sandwiches were very good (grilled chicken with roasted red peppers, pepper jack, chipotle mayo, and corned beef sandwich with melted Swiss and thousand island dressing). Fun ambience. Would do again, but where were the wooden nickels?
Review Source:Our English friend that went with us said they were top of the list for fish and chips in America in all his 20 years in country. The bangers and mash truly hit the spot and the rest of our group was very pleased with their food as well. One of our group ordered the lobster mac and cheese which was one of the best we ever had.
Beers were a great local selection and they have a large size and pint. One of the troupe had the blueberry beer which they add blueberries to when serving which was very tasty.
The service was great and we sat in the bar to be served by the bartender who was friendly and personable. Did not wait long, and the food, drinks and service were great and reasonable priced. Will go back again if we have time either for food and drinks or just drinks.
Small bar and small dining area, but great pub feel to hang out with your friends.
I have been coming here for almost 20 years and I am shocked at how the quality has gone downhill. Â The calamari was more peppers than squid (and had a huge piece of breaded plastic which I pulled out of my mouth - the waitress took it off our bill, but wasn't overly concerned about it.). The burger my husband had was the size of a mini slider, and my lobster mac and cheese was the size of a kiddie portion. Â We asked for bread and were told we could have some but had to PAY for it!!! Â In the old days they used to bring you little warm loaves of bread with butter when you ordered! Â
I am so sad that The Newes has deteriorated so badly. Â It used to be such a fun place with wonderful pub food.
Mmmm.... better than pub food, I'd say. Â The lobster mac and cheese was truly a worthy indulgence - which says a lot, since it must have been an entire day's worth of calories. Â At first, I though the portion looked too small. Â But as I type this about 3.5 hours later, I'm still full enough to be very glad it wasn't a bite more than it was.
My mom had the cheeseburger. Â It was very good. Â I'm not going to agree with reviews that say it was the best ever; I have to reserve that for burgers that have snazzy tangy creative toppings. Â But for just a standard, classic cheeseburger it was moist but not too greasy - very good.
My mom thought the cole slaw was too plain. Â I actually liked it - understated. Â
I'd give 5 stars but the dessert selection didn't seem to die for, and again, I'd need fancier toppings on the cheeseburger. Â Or at least some pickle slices that fit on the burger.
I am updating my experience from the last visit.
The same waitress, once friendly before, with a careless approach, this time. Â The food portion is being ridiculously smaller. and, not impressive. Greed is their new ingredient!
Although they have more people there than my last visits, in this winter time, I find that the food portion is reduced-big time. It is a cheat! Kid burgers for grown ups for $14?.
And, without asking the option of salads or chips, they filled the filthy, sticky serving basket with 3/4 of chips, and 1/4 burger-that is the kid's size. I can never FORGIVE THEM for forcing me to eat more chips than the burger. I felt embarrassed that this is how I was treated; the burger was consumed in the first 2 minutes slowing chowed down.
I see the people next to our table also refused to finish the meal and complained to the waitress when checking out- They had calamari and salads. Then, the waitress's response was "I wish you told me earlier" Well, lady, where were you all that time, not attending us?
I know it is one of the few places open during the winter season but if this bad service continues, it is going to hurt their name out there.
So you're walking around "downtown" Edgartown when suddenly CRIPES! You realize you're wearing your whale-stitched SHORTS tonight and not your whale-stitched sundress! OMG! Â Where can you go that isn't too fancy but also not, you know, a place where people who can't afford whale-stitched attire are forced to eat?
Newes From America!
The Newes is your typical pub with an, of course, New England slant: decent local beers and items like clam chowder, lobster rolls, fish & chips, etc. None of the offerings are close to being the best I've ever had, but it's a good, solid choice for a casual, well-priced meal in the location.
The Newes is a very family friendly, low key place that Edgartown really needs. It is open year round and features a familiar array of items on their menu at decent prices for downtown Edgartown.
You walk in and veer off to your left in order to enter a dark and cozy little pub-like atmosphere. There are assorted tables all throughout and a few seats at the bar. Two wide screen TVs in the corners feature sports, which is great luck if you are a Red Sox fan.
They have lots of delicious beer on tap, decent food and a very friendly staff. We are underwhelmed by their curry fries which come with a drab, watery curry sauce. Roquefort stilettos, French bread toasted up with Roquefort and bacon, is a traditional family favorite. They offer decent wings, burgers, meat loaf, sandwiches and salads. It's not gourmet, but in some ways that is a very welcome experience when you are in Edgartown with your family. Who needs overpriced rum drinks and martinis, aloof servers who ignore you and a main course that zaps $35 out of your wallet faster than you can say "Jaws"?
No reservations here at The Newes, so get there or early or wait a while during the summer. Off season- it's a welcome sight indeed when the snow is falling, the ice is on the ground, and summer is a very distant memory.
We visited three times in a week, the only restaurant in MV that we visited more than once. Â The clam chowder is excellent, the lobster Mac n cheese is fantastic. Â Also a favorite, the Blueberry beer. Â The atmosphere is colonial pub/sports bar, but it is still a good place for kids.
Review Source:My sister in law, husband, and I were looking for a place in Edgartown on Christmas Eve for a quick drink and snack. Â Fortunately, this place was open and had a roaring fire.
Newes from America had a wide selection of beers and some inexpensive small bites ($3 - $4) consisting of cheddar/ale bread, meat pies, and loaded potatoes. Â
I'd recommend this place as a cozy pub to have a beer (or cocktail - they have a full bar) and good bar food.
The News is my favorite restaurant on the island. What makes it so great is its small size and really cozy atmosphere. The pub-style food is mouthwatering and they have a big beer selection. The service is really friendly despite the fact that they are always busy. Everything on the menu is great and although in the summer you might have to wait, trust me, it's worth it.
Review Source:Went here for lunch in the off-season. It's a very cool atmosphere and we had high hopes. Honestly, it was one of our more regrettable meals on the island, as we left spending $60 for lunch for 2 people and we weren't really bowled over by it.
The thing that left a very bad taste in my mouth, however, was that when our meals arrived, our server asked if we wanted another soda. We both said yes and she took our current soda glasses. And then, apparently, forgot about us. We got through our entire meal with nothing on the table to drink (not even water), unable to get our server's attention to fix the situation. When she finally saw empty plates, she went "Oh that's right- your sodas!" and brought them over as she cleared our lunch plates.
I understand these things happen and I wasn't going to give it another thought until we got the bill and saw that she had CHARGED US for those 2 refills. Had we not been running dangerously close to running out of our 2 hour time limit in the parking lot, we would have said something but we weren't going to risk a ticket for $5 worth of sodas.
I love this place. Â It is right on a side street in the best part of The Vineyard. Â There is a good mix of locals and tourists. Â It is a very friendly welcoming environment. Â At times I have had to wait for a seat other times they seem to move people right along. Â Either way there is always a pleasant crowd in there. Â Make sure to stalk up on your wooden nickels. Â If you drink enough and save your nickels you could be part of there honorary club.
Review Source:The News is a cozy little pub with great atmosphere that I make sure to visit every time I go to Martha's Vineyard. It's a small restaurant, with exposed wood beams and a fire place, which they light in the winter. The pub stools at the bar have name plates of loyal patrons names, and the back of their menu has fun trivia about Martha's Vineyard.
The bar has a wide selection of beer, and also offers the "rack of beer," which is tasting glasses of your choice of five beers. The food is killer. Plenty of comfort food, and there fried come in brown paper bags. Really, you can't go wrong, no matter what you order. Yum!
