Love this place. The food is always good and the pizza is the best. I personally love the eggplant and garlic pizza, but you can't go wrong. Good selection of beers on draft and just a fun atmosphere to hang. The only problem is that I wish there was another location closer to me in Southie!
The owner is a stud too.
Interesting place. I came here with my coworker on a Wednesday night and the damn guy knew everyone here! Servers, DJ, random old people...apparently you can make yourself to be quite a hit here with the local populace if you wanted to.
Even though the Celtics lost that night, most people with leprechaun jerseys were still happy and having fun. I'm pretty sure we were the only non white people on the premises.
It was karaoke night, and honestly it was not the most impressive bunch up on stage. Some folks were downright awful. The same people butchering different American classics. And the DJ said they weren't taking any more requests after 10 PM, bah!
Mixed well drinks run about $7 each and are served in a crappy clear plastic cup, but they are a nice pour and are not watered down. I would say this is one of the more lively spots in town at night.
I'm surprised about the reviews on here, because the hub and I really liked this place!
Here's the story: We went out light peepin at Christmastime and somehow ended up an hour away from home. We were starving and happened upon Newtowne. It was a Saturday night around 8pm. We ate in what I believe was the dining area and not the bar area. I could tell people were having fun up in the bar.
We ordered the steak tips which came with garlic mashed potato and asparagus. It was AWESOME!
We still talk about this place and plan to put it in the GPS to find it again. Next time we are gonna try the turkey tips...
If you want a high school reunion (no matter what your age) sit in the lounge area.
If you want a family night out, eat in the restaurant. The cheese pizza with prosciutto is TO DIE FOR. Throw in some beer, and I'm good to go.
Service isn't that great. Not that many (great) beer options....BUT the bartenders always remember you!
i dont think ive ever eaten here. i have heard awesome things about their 'turkey tips', though. i usually just come here when i get cut off at the emerald rose. they have karaoke on wednesday nights. it gets crowded, and theres a pretty loyal following. the girls room is far too small, and on a busy night; i may prefer to piss out back near the dumpster. yep.
however, the bartenders rock. they remember you, and if youre a regular you get top notch service. they might even forget to charge you for one. or maybe i just forgot to pay for it.
final word; if you eat here, let me know how it is.
Where to begin?
Service .5 stars - There staff thinks they belong to a cult of gangsters.
appeal 1 star - lots of TV's can make up for bad service but the place is darker than hell it's self... too the point that I tripped over a fallen patron.
Food 2 stars - food you can get anywhere... there fried green beans are the only thing that is good but simple.
overall 1 star - the "regulars" are wanna be city gang members and punks... a good restaurant attracts good guests. It has the potential to be a three star restaurant and bar, however, it needs serious attention. The flow of design is terrible and could use a better layout.
We went on Sunday to watch a football game since it wasn't being shown as our local game. This place really is like a bomb shelter. It was a sunny day and I had no idea. When I left I felt like I was seeing light for this first time.
The food was blah. Nothing interesting or even tempting- I ordered a turkey sandwich. It was fine, but I make a better sandwich at home. My husband got a salad, which again speaks to the theme of nothing being tempting. The redeeming part about that is the prices are extremely low.
It is great that they show all the games, and the staff was very nice. That is why it's getting 2 stars. No stars for food or atmosphere.
Eek, I hate giving out bad reviews, but Newtowne Grille, you have disappointed me. Â The first time I came here was for lunch and while the food was decent, the service was terribly slow. Â However, I think this place had only been open for a week, so I didn't hold that against them. Â Recently, some coworkers and I planned an after-work outing here, looking to have some dinner and copious amounts of cocktails. Â My boss and I arrived first and explained to our server that there would be nine people total and we'd want to order food when everyone arrived. Â As our party filed in, everyone ordered drinks and perused the menu. Â We were eager to order, sitting with menus closed and ravenous looks on our faces, but our server was nowhere to be found for a long time (about 25 minutes) and when she did pass by, there was not so much a glance at our table, even as several people tried to get her attention. Â Having already paid for our drinks, a vote was taken to abandon this place in favor of the Emerald Rose across the street, where we served food quickly and racked up an additional $250 bill. Â Â I personally am willing to give this place another try, but it will take a lot of convincing to get my coworkers back here again.
