There is a new world restaurant / juice bar / coffee shop down here in Clear Lake called NOKturne that is open from about 6 pm to about 9 am on Tuesday through Sunday nights and from 9 pm to about 9 am on Sunday and Monday nights. I've spent the last few nights there wrapping up a quality management certification after my daughter told me about it.
I had a long talk with the manager. He came to the U.S. from Mexico in around 2002 to finish secondary school at Clear Creek High. The menu is largely vegan with no fried foods. They plan to have a liquor license within five weeks and are working on permits to build two stages for poetry and live music. After the lounge goes in, they will expand the art installations.
Please show your support for this great effort in a part of town that doesn't have many options for culture or late night, low key venues.
Me - "whatever you do, don't put any capers on it"
Of course my sandwich comes out FULL OF CAPERS.
And you know what happened next? Â The young lady working cashier went back into the kitchen and had the cooks prepare a whole new sandwich and then she brought it out to me.
It's a young restaurant. Â
They're trying to do something outside of the suburban norm.
Mistakes will be made.
The true value of the spot is how they handle those mistakes. Â
They made a customer out of me that night.
I am really rooting for this place to be a success, however, I think a little market research would serve them well when it comes to menu options. I gave three stars because I appreciate the effort to being the new kids on the block and venturing out of the typical "clear lake" fair.
We live across the street and I tend to work late hours, so I appreciate the option of non-fast food during the late night hour. Â We ordered a fresh juice, 4 chicken wings and a breakfast burrito but had to wait 30 minutes to eat. Â
We were the only patrons in the restaurant, but two others did walk in and ordered about 10 minutes after. Â My guess is that most items are frozen and they needed time to defrost, then cook. Â This is the only logical explanation going by the other items offered on the menu. Â With the extensive amount of different ingredients and proteins, there is no way anything is being served fresh.
The breakfast burrito was ok, nothing I can't make, if not better at home. The chicken wings ( 4, really?), were a little soggy, but the flavor was good. Â The juice was good, but again, why did it take 30 minutes?
I think the menu needs to be simplified with standard choices but with a  "worldly" twist... and QUICK!
Great concept. Works for me since i work nights and i'm awake late at night when i'm not working. Right now they're not "fully" open yet. They have an art gallery, lounge, and stage area in the works. Food wasn't bad, an there's a lot of healthy options. I got the Veggie burger and it's one of the best i've had. Will def come back!
