we had a decent meal, nothing spectacular. menu was not very creative. we ordered a few different appetizers. Shrimp hush puppies were interesting, calamari less than average, and crab dip was just ok as well, annoyed that they did not give enough baguettes and then charged us for more when we asked for extra.
the best of our entrees was the mahi tacos. Two of us had that and really liked. There was a Cesar salad with Salmon that my daughter really liked. I had a crab cake sandwich that was decent, and my daughter thought the same of her grouper sandwich. All in all we had a nice time.
waitress was very nice, no complaints, very responsive. Setting was good, Â very interesting looking building from the outside, fairly average decor inside, with a window looking out on the ocean. Outside on porch looked great, but we chose to eat indoors.
This is my favorite place on Kure Beach. The view is awesome and the food is great. I have always had great service here. Kure beach is relaxing and fun, which is what the Ocean Grill is but with great food and drinks. I especially love the sangria. If you have the chance to eat here, make sure you park across the street.
Review Source:I'm relatively new to the Kure Beach/Carolina Beach area, so I've been checking out all the bars/restaurants to find the right "fit" for me. Â Right "fit" for me means on the water...really...actually on the damn water...great food (selection, price, quality), great service (warm, friendly, responsive), great drinks (cold, strong, priced right). Â There are some decent fits in CB/KB but this one is IT for me. Â Got everything I'm looking for. Â And BTW Â the F'n Tiki bar ROCKS! Â Check out the Summer band schedule! Â Get your A$$ from wherever you are to OGTB.
Review Source:Right on the beach so it's a nice place to just stop in for a quick bite. Got a burger which was decent. Nothing special. Had a tiki bar which I loved but didn't have the time to stop in for a drink. Waiter was very quick and friendly. Sat at an empty table and talked to us for a few min here and there, but not in a creepy way. Would def. go back again.
Review Source:Extremely limited menu. Had peel and eat shrimp, not the best quality and it seemed like they cooked it several days ago and just refrigerated. The crab bisque was pink heavy cream and the only thing other than the liquid was the crackers I had to put in. Fried Okra was just that.
Very disappointing for a large sum of money.
It's all about location, location, location. Â In fact, the location probably deserves a 5 star rating because this place is located on a deck that jets out right over the beach, leaving you with a fantabulous view of the coastline as you eat and drink. Â My friend and I came here for lunch and drinks after driving out from Raleigh before hitting the sand and waves.
The first thing that disappointed me was their service (or lack thereof). Â We were sitting there for awhile admiring the view of the beach before we realized no one had come up to take our order yet. Â We were in a good mood though and enjoying the atmosphere, so we just continued to sit there. Â After a good 15 minutes I decided to ask the bartender if there were any servers on duty. Â There were, so he made sure to call someone over to help us. Â Once we did start getting service, everyone was very pleasant and friendly.
My friend and I both ordered the grouper sandwich blackened. Â It was pretty good, but I wasn't jumping up and down about it. Â We also ordered a couple pina coladas, which were great. Â Overall, I would say the food here is just mediocre, but the wait staff is very friendly and the location is spectacular. Â I will be returning for sure.
Good Grief. Â Wife and I tried to have lunch here on a Thursday around 1:00 at the Tiki bar. Â The girl behind the bar did not offer a menu, nor did she offer a smile. Â We left, not going to spend my hard earned cash with a restaurant that does not care. Â This is a tourist trap, pure and simple. Â I am a local, and this place preys on tourists. Â Will never return.
Review Source:The crab bisque was out of this world, I would come here just to eat that. Â We got a seat upstairs with a few of the pier and the ocean, I couldn't have found a better place to eat lunch. Â My wife and I went here without the kids for a date. Â All of the food was good and prepared right and the service was outstanding.
Review Source:I wish we could review the restaurant and tiki bar apart from each other! Â They seem like two separate entities. Â
Restaurant: Meh. Â It's... ok. Â Not terrible, but definitely not worth the prices. Â You can tell that they are banking on tourists/hotel guests - and, I'm sure that they are not disappointed. Â But, on an island filled with hidden gems, this is a big ole' Vegas style tourist trap. Â Service... mediocre. Â Food is pretty good (but again, nothing to warrant the $$$). Â Atmosphere is very nice, with great ocean views. Â A plus for a big parking lot. Â Overall, I would give the restaurant a 2, simply because I would not go here if it weren't for the...
Tiki Bar: YAY! Â Love it. Best open air bar on the island, and one of only a couple good ones in the Wilmington area. Â What makes it unique though is that the bar is on the old Carolina Beach Pier, which was partially (mostly) destroyed in 1996 by hurricanes. Â It is actually over the ocean, and a chill place in the summer! Â A bit too chill after Sept. though, so they close for the season. The drinks and selection are great. Â Crowd is diverse. Â Service, meh - but, it doesn't really matter that much. Â I would give the tiki bar a 4 (4.5 if half stars were allowed).
This place could be good. I have to admit, I used to go often. My last visit, over the weekend was just ok.
The prices are WAY too high for what you get.
The food is decent, if they are not out of what you want to order.
The drink selection is good.
The service is hit or miss.
The owner sucks, he has never acknowledged my group who do nothing but spend money at his place. I guess he just has no personality. Never an apology for being out of several items at one time in one visit.
Great views. Clean place. Free parking across the street.
It seems like this place is a classic mismanagement, seems to be pulling a Reed Hastings.
I will go back because it is the best place ON the beach anywhere around here, but I may eat before I arrive.
We spent, oh, maybe four hours boozing it up on the tiki pier listening to the rockin' sounds of local faves The Noseriders. Â An aside: I freaking love surf music. Â I mean, where else do you see some tan beachcomber using his guitar neck to play the Moog synthesizer while he wails on guitar?
Something I love about the beach: craft beer in cans. Â They look like pop, but are way, way more delicious. Â And Ocean Grill's Tiki Bar has got them in abundance. Â They were out of the Ellie's Brown, but had Modus Hoperandi, Sky Blue, and a few others. Â I was quite impressed by the beer selection at such a small bar. Â As we celebrated the last real weekend of summer (weekend after Labor Day), I watched them change out one of their cashed taps to Sierra Nevada Tumbler, a tasty Autumn seasonal. Â It was like magic. Â Of course they've got your standard Bud and Coors, should you have an insensitive palate ...
Their mixed drinks are also not to be missed. Â I took down a Haitian Suckapunch like a champ in three quick bouts with my straw but, boy howdy, was a tad woozy afterward, I'm not gonna front. Â Had to drink me some water and eat me a sammich after getting the business from that no-nonsense (yet, oh, so delicious! drink).
Their beet, arugula, and goat cheese panini is pretty dang good, and did a bang-up job of sopping up the craft beer, coconut juice, and rum sloshing around in my otherwise empty belly. Â I'm not a big fan of fries in general (I can only eat a few at a time, unless they're baked), so I should've subbed salad, because these fries were greasy. Â But, you know, that's how fries roll. Â My friends raved about the mahi tacos, which you can order grilled, blackened, or fried.
The service was not the best. Â The bartenders, wearing their sunglasses in the dark, acted aloof and actually a tad rude at times. Â One forgot to make my drink for ages, but then finally got back to me after a friend and I spoke up. Â A patron came up to order the bartender's choice of six mixed cans of craft brews to go, and the bartender became flustered, then downright indignant. Â I could tell the patron was starting to feel embarrassed and very, very small, so I---encouraged after I *finally* got that aforementioned Haitian Suckapunch---picked up the beer list and very bossily called off the first six cans on the list. Â After that happened, he was really, really nice to me and super attentive. Â Go figure.
But, you know, when visiting a Tiki Bar situated on a pier overlooking Carolina Beach, just don't have super high expectations. Â That way you're guaranteed to have your expectations surpassed every single time. Â Know that the bartenders get frazzled, the patrons---a solid mix of Harley Davidson enthusiasts, well-to-do functioning alcoholics, frat boys, and thirtyish locals---get rowdy (and occasionally obnoxious), and just knock back a few and enjoy the music, the sunset, the breeze, and the company of friends. Â This is a guaranteed good time, y'all, so take it easy, and love your life.
All in all, a pretty decent place. Â We were seated upstairs by a window, which afforded a nice view. Â Food was good- not outstanding, but certainly sufficient after a long day of driving and beaching. Â (I had the grilled Mahi Tacos and would order them again.)
The outdoor tiki bar is fun. Â It's got a little boardwalk down onto the beach, which is nice (especially if you decide to go for a moonlit beach stroll after drinks.)
I'd give the place 3.5 stars if Yelp would let me.
(only visited the tiki bar portion of the restaurant)
great tiki-painted location on a pier, lots of tiki drinks (slightly renamed to fit in on carolina beach), decent prices ($7 for something I was expecting to pay around $10 for), good music, and nice bartenders. a decent local crowd seemed to show up close to closing (10pm), and apparently you can order food and have it brought out from the restaurant. I was partial to their version of the bahama mama, but there are plenty of fruity concoctions to choose from (as well as a selection of beers and standard full-bar drinks).
at night, the walk back down the pier could be lit a little better- so mind your footing, parking is in a lot across the street (unless you're staying at the hotel), but you really can't beat the location!
4 stars simply for having the best oceanfront bar closest to the water in Either Carolina Beach OR Wrightsville Beach. Â The Tiki Bar rules. Â It is an old pier that once stretched much further out on the ocean. Â Now it comes right up to the water and allows you to grab a Carolina Beach Ice Tea while the seagulls fly overhead and the ocean breeze blows through your freshly trimmed mullet and or afro.
Review Source:Not a bad place to go for dinner while at the beach. If you can sit outside, near the water, it is very nice but don't be disappointed by the lawn furniture you will be sitting on.
Food was decent, nothing too special. We started with wings that were not cooked enough for my taste. The fish tacos were a good choice. Others in our party had the fish of the day with the glaze on the side (good choice since the glaze was very sweet). A few good, local beers on  tap and in bottle.
All in all, atmosphere outweighs the food.
Good food at a decent price. Â
Fish Tacos (Blackened Mahi Mahi) was excellent...much better than I expected after walking in...
Seafood Lasagna was cheesy and tasty.
Great mixed drinks: Mojito was superb, other mixed drinks were refreshing, but seemed to lack much booze.
Service could be improved, but the staff is friendly and knows the menu.
This place is so-so. The crab cakes have so much filler that it should have been called crab stuffing. If you don't know any better this place is okay. The other person at our table had a very thin grouper sandwich. The bun takes over the sandwich. Do yourself a favor and find some place better.
Review Source:LOVED IT! Â My cousin was visiting from Pennsylvania so we had a girls dinner out here on a Tuesday night. Â We sat on the deck looking out towards the tiki bar and the ocean. Â It was great!
If you do nothing else while you are there, try the crab bisque! Â It's incredible. Â Now having been married in Jamaica, I have a addiction to anything prepared jerk style so although there were several appealing seafood dishes, I had to go with the jerk chicken.
It was very authentic which was shocking. Â The flavor was perfect as though it was actually prepared in the jerk fashion. Â Jerk is like BBQ. Â It's not a sauce. Â It is a way of marinating and cooking the food. Â They got it! Â The chicken was juicy and tender and the spices were just right. Â The rice and beans and pineapple salsa were fantastic. Â Just like taking a trip to Ocho Rios!
My dinner companion had the crab legs and she was so absorbed in her wonderful meal that she hardly said a word once the plate hit the table! Â :) Â Good times.
The prices were about right for the portions and presentation. Â Can't wait to go back and take the hubby!
My husband and I decided to go here on a date while on vacation to Carolina Beach.  I have to say we were not disappointed in our decision.  When we arrived the hostess was vary friendly, and offered us our choice of seating, asking if we would like to sit outside, or upstairs.  After having read several reviews here that said the view was amazing we opted to sit upstairs.  I have to say the view did not disappoint.  Our waitress was very attentive, and was able to answer every question we threw at her about the menu, which was quite a few!  She was also very friendly and accommodating.  We started off with the crab dip which I have to say was wonderful. The crab bisque was also very good.  Just note that when you order a cup of the soup it actually comes out in a bowl, so be prepared for a larger portion.  I got the fresh catch, and my husband got the ribs.  Both were good.  The Ribs are done in a burbon barbecue sauce, and are baked instead of smoked.  The was probably our one complaint about the place.  The fresh catch was good.  There were several options of fish to choose from including Grouper, Tuna, Salmon, and one other. I chose the Grouper  You could have it blackened with a pineapple salso if you wanted spicy or with a ginger soy glaze if you didn't.  I chose the ginger soy glaze as I don't like spicy food.  However, I did get the pineapple salsa on it.  I thought the Grouper was a little fishy for such a mild flavored fish, but it was still good.  The sides with my meal were mashed potatoes, and vegetable.  The veggie was Asparagus.  The Asparagus was done almost perfectly.  Still very crisp, but not overly.  They apparently just steamed it.  After adding a little lemon to it it was perfect.  The mashed potatoes were your basic mashed potatoes, still very good.  I was also surprised at the Sweet Tea.  Now I usually don't get sweet tea, because I am from the North, and thus not a big fan of it, but the sweet tea here was very good, not overly sweet at all.  I think it had the prefect amount of sweetness to it.  Enough, but not over kill.  I can't really comment on their dessert selection as we opted not to get it there.  All in all this restaurant provided a wonderful view, wonderful atmosphere, and wonderful food.
Review Source:Ocean Grill is located at The Golden Sands hotel complex (I resist calling it a resort) along the main drag in Carolina Beach. Â It features indoor dining on two levels, as well as a small dining area on a deck facing the ocean.
Overall, the food rates three stars. Â I usually expect a straight-from-the-freezer entree option whenever I go to a seafood-biased restaurant (since I don't eat seafood), but I'm happy to say the spinach ravioli was not bad and the red pepper sauce was pretty good. Â Two of my companions ordered the swordfish sandwich, and both said it was tasty. Â The last got a burger and enjoyed it. Â We also ordered an appetizer of calamari, and by all accounts it was decent.
The main reason you go to the OG, though, is the view (this is where the fourth star is earned.) Â If you can, request a table upstairs next to a window, and you'll be treated to an unobstructed view of the beautiful Carolina Beach shoreline. Â We sat outside on the deck, which is also a great option weather permitting. Â I recommend hitting the nearby tiki bar for a drink after dinner. Â You can sit on the pier and take in the sunset or some grand people watching.
Our server was great ... she was friendly and kept our drinks filled. Â No complaints. Â Unfortunately, you have to park across the street if you are only going to the OG because the main parking lot is for Golden Sands guests only. Â This lot is kind of small and fills up quickly, especially on the weekends.
I was brought here on the first night of my visit. Â They have a small section of outdoor seating that affords a beautiful ocean view. Â Beyond the seating area is a tiki bar that offers drinks and a limited menu. Â The latter area is great for a late night view of the ocean in a nice summer breeze. Â But I had dinner in the former area. Â
I started off with a cup of crab bisque. Â My cup was actually a fairly large sized bowl, so I was impressed with the generous portion. Â The bisque was surprisingly good. Â The soup was lovely and rich with its liberal use of whole cream and large chunks of fresh crab meat. Â For the main course, I opted for the fresh catch of the day, choosing the grilled mahi. Â This was served with asparagus and mashed potatoes. Â The potatoes were disappointing, but I was happy with the mahi. Â It had a nice soy glaze that gently complemented the dish. Â Finally, I was fairly impressed with the selection of craft beer on the menu with some choices I have not seen before.
All in all this is a very relaxing restaurant with a decent menu. Â Customers are tourists and locals alike, and you may even spot a local celebrity during your visit. Â While I was there, we saw the professional surfer Tony Silvagni.
My sister had her rehearsal dinner here... Â We got the entire dining area practically, which was nice. Â And the mojitos were good! Â The food? Â Um. Â Left a lot to be desired. Â Maybe I made a mistake in ordering mozzarella sticks, but they were just not... good... Â Very plain and only three tiny little pieces! Â I heard the shrimp burger was pretty good. Â But there was definitely not one person I heard in our group of about 30 who walked away raving about the food they had.
Also, our waitress was fairly rude. Â Seriously, I doubt even a half-smile has ever killed anyone.
The night before we had come here for drinks and had a fine time. Â Despite how loud we were, no one rolled their eyes at us (too much). Â The hockey game was on TV, and the bartender was extremely friendly. Â So, maybe that's the way to go - just go for drinks and skip the whole food thing.
