Old Dog is a great place to go for a hearty bit to eat, a good drink, some nice music, and perhaps to fun games.
The decor is amazing - it is rustic, industrial, and welcoming. The staff is (usually) friendly. The food is ALWAYS amazing. Try the pasty - it is to die for. The quality of food is great - so much better than the usual "bar" food.
Live music is awesome! They have open mic nights, jazz nights, and random shows of all types. Sometimes they charge cover - which sucks...but whatever, support local music!
It is cash only - sooo know this before you go!
The outdoor section is beautiful! It is nice to sit and hear the trains go by...and by hear, I mean feel. A perfect addition to Downtown Kalamazoo!
Old Dog Tavern... is old. The build has painting from the original building still on it so we thought it was a new paper or something. But when we went in it was a dive bar with lots of character. I think the reason the call it Old Dog is because their point of sales system is so old it doesn't accept credit cards yet.
Service was friendly, we tried to crack a few jokes at the bartender but either our jokes are terrible or she doesn't enjoy humor. Don't mistake this comment as she was rude mannered, she wasn't at all, but was very dry in her interaction.
The have a ping pong table, which is probably a dangerous game to play while inebriated but YOLO KALAMAZOO! The table is nice, the net and paddles were probably found in a garbage can and should be returned there as well. BYOP (paddle) if you want to play a good game of pong. The net was on a piece of wood which is a great solution for a ping pong table in a bar but it didn't stop many hits from going over the net.
I would return just to play pong, we didn't really drink in the bar area at all though.
