Great place to have a drink after teaching high school kids. Â Awkward place to run into former students. Â They have a basic irish beer selection with a few good local surprises in the mix. Â The food is good! Â The back patio is nice and spacious! Â They have a fun vibe and the girls that serve there are super cool. Â They get it done right, quick, and with a witty attitude. Â Thats how I like it! Â Nothing too over the top amazing, but not bad either.
Review Source:A liberal think tank for the socialist bark eaters of Escondido with a staff to match All veterans beware you will be mis treated and your service and dedication to country is not appreciated. I, as a 30 retired veteran, was asked to leave the establishment, and not return, after correcting the attitude of one of the above described when told the recent Boston Bombings were the fault of the U.S. Military's action in the Middle East where I served. Funny thing is I spent allot of money in the place
and the liberal had even asked I pay for his beer as he could not. Great business plan O'Sullivans....good luck with that.
Best bar in Escondido. But that doesn't say much cause the others are all dives. The food is bland and expensive for what you get. The beer selection is a joke for an area that is huge into the craft beer scene. Â It's tiny in the front so it usually feels cramped. I come here every once in a while, but only if I can't avoid it. It's sadly the best option in the area, but I wouldn't recommend it for a non-local.
Review Source:If O'sullivan's would stay open until 2am like a bar was supposed to, thay'd get 5 stars from me. Â Came here on a random Thursday night once and Tony Cummins was playing. Â For those of you who haven't heard of him, he's an Irish pub signer/performer who has a hilarious reputation for getting the crowd into the act and will turn any old night into one to remember. Â Super good times when he shows up here, for sure.
Review Source:I love Irish pubs and probably went on the wrong night.
The place was brightly lit even after 8 pm. They had hard rock music playing loudly over the speakers to add to the ambiance. At the same time they had an extremely long pub trivia game going on that consisted of a woman trying to shout the questions over the music (instead of just turning the music down a little) and repeating the questions as people yelled, "What?" and "Can you repeat that?"
The food (lamb for me, corned beef and cabbage for her) took quite a while and none of it was much over room temperature.
The vibe was that of an Irish pub that had been taken over by people who had no interest at all in running an Irish pub but didn't want to change the decor or the menu. I'll try again on a night when they have Irish music..
Great Irish pub. I checked in after I parked my car for Cruising The Grand. The place was slammed, but the hostess found us a table right away. After I got some Guinness in my gut, I needed some food. I went for the bacon potato boxty and it was fantastic - hot potato and bacon heaven. I was sad I was in on vacation, because the boxty was so big I couldn't finish it, and my hotel room didn't have anything for me to reheat it in.
When I come back to Escondido, I'll return. I can't find anyplace local to me that sells boxty, so I'll have to.
Came in here on St. Patty's day weekend for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the food and decor. I have always assumed that it was a little divey inside but that is not the case.
The Irish music that was playing was a bit on the loud side but I attributed it to the weekend and just went with it. Our food was amazing and I had the Ruben Burger. Beers were served in the true pint size and our waitress was ready and willing to refill when they got low.
Another great thing about this place at lunch time is that we were seated next to some senior citizens that came in for lunch and were taking down GLASSES of whiskey like it was the last thing they were ever going to drink. Definitely an interesting lunch when granny is out drinking you ;)
I was just on a mission to find some excellent beer. Low and be hold! Who knew this place would have great food?
My partner in crime didnt have the best experience with his food and barley picked at it. The bar tender noticed and offered to give my PIC something else but his appetite was killed. Sad story for him, mine was BOMB! and I ate it all. :)
Been here a few times with my girlfriend and have always felt at home thanks to the staff. Â The drinks are very reasonably priced, especially when you consider how strong they are. Â We have tried all sorts of food and it is all good bar food and some authentic Irish style dishes too.
Review Source:From looking for a place to go .. to picking up O'Sullivan's was quite a drill that I did since I was out visiting my friend and had no idea about place around. One thing for sure, one cannot go wrong picking an Irish pub.
It was late that I was here and was not crowded on a Fri night and also streets were barren already with this place open with some people smoking outside.
Soon there was a band that played awesome music and amuzed the audience with their heart touching tunes and songs. They've also got Smithwicks.
Excellent Irish pub on Grand in Escondido! If you are looking for a St Patrick's destination, they had so many kegs lined up.
Different specials for each day of the week. Live music at night, attentive bartenders, people were fun to talk to.
I went yesterday and they had $5 Smithwick's Ale on tap, gotta love that.
The reviews on the food are good, so soon I will need to try out corned beef enchiladas or tacos. If that isn't a San Diego/Escondido spin on Irish cuisine I don't know what is...
Went to this place a couple of years ago after cruisin grand and had dinner with some buddies. The service and the food were just ok. I went back on 1/18/2013 at around 4pm to have a beer with another buddy and we sat there for 15 minutes and didn't get waited on. It looked like there was only one waitress working. I looked around and it appeared that several tables had empty glasses on their tables. We ended up leaving and going to Jalapeno's Mexican Grill and Steakhouse and the service and food was outstanding! None of my friends nor I will attempt to eat or drink at O'Sullivan's again.
Review Source:Tonight I was horribly disappointed.
I love this place, don't get me wrong... the atmosphere is great, the beer is good, the music is good, heck I even had my birthday party there a few years back and my friends all brought their instruments and we had a great mid-day session.
But, the food, which I love, is so wildly inconsistent that it's unforgivable.
I ordered the beef stew tonight, my wife ordered the same thing she always orders - Irish nachos.
The nachos came, almost no beans, a mountain of jarred jalapenos and they had been sitting under the heat lamp so long the corned beef had turned to jerky. I said, "why they put all that shredded red cabbage on your nachos?"
I was expecting a rich, thick and flavorful stew, you know like the picture on this site, like the stew I had gotten there in the past. What I got was a thin, cold, watery, flavorless broth with three tiny pieces of meat and a bunch of un-cooked carrots. I asked the waiter, "It's been a while since I've eaten here, has the recipe changed?" He said some items had changed, but the stew is the same, it's always been "brothy". It was so miserably bad that I left in disgust - once I finally got his attention to get a check.
Now, this all might sound bitter, but the stew I received looked nothing like the picture on Yelp, or any stew I'd ever gotten there before, it wasn't even stew, it was some unflavored broth with some raw vegetables dumped in it and I'm upset with myself for paying for it.
I love this place! My boyfriend and I always go here and whenever we need a place to meet up with friends, this is it. Good drinks and great food! I highly recommend the corn beef quesadilla. The only downside is that because it is such a small place it gets crowded quickly (Especially during Cruisin Grand). Also, the band noise can be overwhelming, but there is a back patio to smoke and talk.
Review Source:A small and intimate place to dine, have a pint or just listen to the excellent music. R. O'Sullivan's in Escondido is a medium priced restaurant/bar with live acts in a very small area. The noise is overwhelming at times and we chose to move from the front to the very back, when a table became available.
My friend had Shepherd's pie, or something like it and I had Fish and Chips. The food was delicious and the portions were more than ample. The only downside to this venue is the size and the way the sound just bounces around in the room. Talking to your dining partner is nearly impossible when the music is going.
Pro: John on Monday nites, Thomas/Karen other nites. HP sauce, music, and clean bathroom.
Con: Music on some nites can be overwhelming, no heater in the front end, and keep them HP in stock, please...
Got sucker into this local water hole per Rachal. I am not too happy with the cider on tap, but I am learning to deal with the pain with the trash can (john, once in a while) or the industrial grade cactus cooler (karen, can i have some more?)
Come for the daily special that change every month, stay for the local nuts going over the latest sports insanity.
This review is going to be short and sweet!
Friend of mine and I went to this pub to watch the band.
Walked in, the atmosphere is amazing, band was amazing, wine was so so (very limited selection) when you had a glass in front of you!
If you enjoy an almost invisible cocktail waitress (she NEVER checks on you) with a horrible attitude when she is around this is the place for you! The bartender was nice. I shouldn't know this as I wasn't sitting at the bar, but after the third time the waitress checked on the two guys to the left of us and didn't even look our way I got to know her fairly well as I had to walk to the bar and get our own drinks.
Oh, I should mention that my friend grabbed a couple of menus as we were going to eat, but the waitress left the area for so long we weren't able to order anything because the kitchen closed by the time she got back. Note to self: Order directly from the kitchen when walking by on the way to the restroom or ask the bartender to put order in for you.
Well, all was not lost. The band was AWESOME and I can't wait to see them again...At a different venue. :)
Cheers!
This is a pretty cool irish pub. I came here with a few of my classmates to celebrate finishing school. We had a tradeshow to do in the area and our teacher actually referred this spot to us lol.
We were lucky enough to come during happy hour and I tried one of their starbucks tini which came in the smallest martini class for $5. neeeehhhh. After that I stuck with well drinks. We did order a round of shots which were cheap too!
I also ordered the corn beef taco which was greeeeaaaat!! BUT! I did not like the horseradish sauce it came with. The flavor of the sauce was so overpowering I couldn't taste anything else but that. Next time I'll ask them to leave that out.
If I happen to be in the area again, I would definitely come by here and order a drink and a taco!
The crap that really matters:
They serve Coke products.
Try the Fish and Chips, Irish Nachos, Bangers and Mash, and Soup of the Day.
Best pint of Guiness I've found in San Diego County.
Attentive service at the bar.
Service varies at tables.
Stools aren't the most comfortable for long stretches.
Bathroom is generally clean.
Bathroom is one person at a time.
Live music will make your drink vibrate like a T. Rex is coming
Extras:
Housed in the old-timey walls of Escondido's Grand Avenue, R. O'Sullivan's Irish Pub fits in well. Â In a neighborhood full of small businesses and a general small town feel, R. O'Sullivan's adds a touch of class in contrast to the rest of Escondido's bars where T-shirts read TapOut of Affliction.
It's a popular hangout for locals looking for a quiet place to have a drink or two, but open to the idea of meeting a new friend or hearing live music (Usually Irish, but it varies). Â The place creates an intimate vibe with the use of space, wood, tile, and close seating. Â One can be as large a part of the atmosphere as one desires.
This provides a solid backdrop for dinner with background music and lighting which is smartly kept dim. Â The artwork and Irish drinking signage add to the ambience and manages to help you forget you're in Escondido, even if just for a second. Â The space can look cramped (I'd say about 60 seats, plus outdoor seating), but it is surprisingly cozy.
There is a front patio which is a perfect spot for someone looking to take a drink outside while smoking, though it tends to get severely crowded at times. Â There is also a seating area in the back with bench seating and tabling conducive to large groups. There are also heaters for when it gets below 60.
They have about a dozen drafts with some taps rotating with different flavors. Â Of particular note is Smithwick's (Brown ale similar to Newcastle, but not as crisp on the tongue) Â which I have yet to see at another bar. Â Then again, I may not be looking that hard. Â A full bar complements the beers and the bartenders are friendly and make a great tasting cocktail.
The wine list exists.
The food is solid, though seemingly pricey for "bar fare." Â The fish and chips, bangers and mash, and soups are always highlights. Â You will taste some very creative soups which alone are worth the price of admission.
My friend and I stopped in by chance during a recent street fair and we were both pretty impressed. Â It's much nicer inside than I would have imagined. Â We had a couple of drinks (I think all draft beers) which were fine, the prices were good (I think it was Happy Hour prices because it was Sunday football?).
We are definitely planning on going back for the Sunday brunch with Mimosa's and Bloody Mary's. Â WOOT!
Wasn't really feeling it here. Sure it's a decent Irish pub that serves up all sorts of Irish drinks and food, but something about it was just off.
Maybe it was our slightly snooty server? Or maybe it was those two toddlers just roaming around in the pub all by themselves. I mean, like what the fuck? This is a fricken bar. I should be able to curse and yell, but I cant because of these stupid little kids. I have to be on my "best behavior" Gee whiz lady.
So yah, it's still a decent pub, but maybe you guys should tone it down on the bring-your-kid-to-happy-hour-night. I mean I have nothing against kids...if I wanted to see kids on my dining out, I probably would have gone to the Red Lobster or McDonalds or something.
But hey, thanks to my two cohorts in crime Bernadette M and Martin L, we managed to make "kiddie night" into random shenanigans night out in downtown Escondido.
From the three of us we shared the Traditional Scotch Eggs, http://www.yelp.com/biz_…; hard boiled eggs wrapped in sausage. Not bad, especially if you have been drinking a lot earlier, it's a good snack to munch on.
Besides "kiddie night" the pub offers free live entertainment. We got to listen to some of the band play some random Irish songs and stuff. Not bad. For Escondido, this is an average bar.
It's a bona fide Irish pub, complete with the authentic grub...but there is a bit of refinement in there. Â Not too much and only on select dishes, but if you hang out with someone who can't get down with fish & chips, shepherd's pie or bangers & mash then they will be happy they have some options.
It was Friday, happy hour time and I left the office at 4:30 pm for a 5 minute cruise to the pub. Â I am glad I cut out early because it gets full quick. Â I really wanted a table and luckily, I found it. Â But you have been WARNED! Â This place get hoppin'. Â
The decor is that of a true pub, complete with the dark wood and tables. Â It is a cozy joint and I did see a family of 6 have to wait to be seated for dinner. Â There is seating outside on the back patio, but it is a smoker's paradise so plan accordingly. Â There are also a couple of bar tables out front, facing Grand Avenue and I am sure are nice on a summer night.
The food and beer....
**happy hour is from 4-6 p.m. during the week. Â I am not sure what the special was, except for $1 off select drafts. Â Whatever...I only wanted Guinness.
**the pour was not the best on the Guinness, but then again it was not the worst either. Â Only a little more training is needed. Â It was still damn tasty.
**Skin Credbile - Christ, skincredible indeed! Â More like potatoes sliced thinly, then fried quick to make potato chips, served in a cone and topped with lots of garlic and parmesan. Â Little slices of greased-up heaven!
**Chips with Curry - This curry was unbelievably good. Â It is so hard to find decent curry in San Diego, so this was a pleasant surprise.
**Sesame Seed Crusted Ahi Tuna - great slice of tuna, but the salsa (jalapeno, mango and pineapple) was lacking in a flavor punch. Â Still, the plain tuna was delightful.
I can't wait to come back and try a dinner entree. Â The apps. filled up my party of four and 2 pints of Guinness is a meal in and of itself. Â If you can't hit Shakespeare's, hit up this place instead!
Fun Fun!! We went here after Cruisin' Grand and it couldn't have been more fun!
The live band was great- the beer was delicious!
Good= Curry Fries. Get 'em! You're at a pub, you just gotta!
Bad= BBQ Chicken salad- I was at a pub, what the hell was I thinking anyways? Stay away from salads at pubs. It was so drenched in a thick/ mayonaisey dressing that the ice berg lettuce was moosh. Yeck
They still get 4 stars- Drink the beer, listen to the band, put your mack down on some curry fries... a perfect Friday night!
Whenever I visit my parents, I come here because as stated by Christine C below, this is what Esco night life has to offer. It's an okay pub. They have Sierra Nevada Pale Ale on tap and it's $4 on Thursday nights (otherwise $5 a pint). You can get a bottled Stone IPA for $4. A notable negative for me was that the waitress did not know anything about beer...she could barely state what they had on tap let alone categorize beers by taste.
Live music is cool. The median age of the bar patrons is definitely over 40 (at least whenever I have gone). I can see it being a lot more fun if I were to come w/ more people in my peer group.
Came here after eating at Sandcrab Cafe in escondido.. Â What better of a finisher than a pint of Guinness and some live music after gorging myself on crab? Â
The place was pretty empty but the service was great and the musician up on stage had a great sense of humor; would stop in mid-song to go "Hello, Laaaaadiieeees" as a group of girls walked into the place. Â
If you're looking for a low key irish pub and you're in Escondido this place is fun!
This place is cool! Â My band played here last Friday night and they opened the place to us. Â The crowd was really cool and responsive, the bartenders are awesome, and the vibe is cool. Â The stage area is really cramped or else it would have gotten 5 stars, but the sound was great.
Had dinner here as well. Â The service was excellent, the food was good, and the beer was cold. Â We will definetly be coming back!
