I love Our Hero.
Known affectionately to many Wittenberg students as "Ghetto Sub," this little hole-in-the-wall sandwich shop is a godsend in the way of cheap, quick, and reliably delicious sub sandwiches. I have never been disappointed by a sandwich there, and when it comes to curing a hangover, Our Hero is CLUTCH.
The interior of the restaurant is pretty dingy, with just a few tables and booths out front and a more private small dining area that extends into the back of the shop. The people working there always look a tad greasier than I would like someone to be who is going to handle my food, but the "ghetto" aspect of the dining experience is part of Our Hero's charm. One time, I went there with two friends of mine who were significantly drunk even though it was the middle of the day (it was Saturday!) and the guy working behind the counter tried to sell us marijuana. We politely declined, but talk about all-around service.
The Italian sub is a favorite of many of Ghetto Sub's regulars, but I usually go for the Bacon, Ham & Cheddar. With any sandwich you can order the Our Hero signature accoutrements, known as "The Works," which include lettuce, tomato, onions, peppers, mayonnaise, salt, and pepper (I think that's it). An 8" sub comes to five bucks even (perfect since the credit card minimum is $5), and its fulfillment factor could put any Subway Five Dollar Footlong to shame. I don't hate Subway or anything, but if it didn't exist anymore, I wouldn't miss it. Our Hero, on the other hand, is one thing that I frequently find myself missing about living in Springfield.
I think this little sandwich shop will always be one of my favorites. And for any haters out there who prefer its around-the-corner rival, Mike & Rosy's, it's probably just because you ain't ghetto enough to appreciate Our Hero for the delectable dive that it is.
Our Hero should put this slogan under their logo: "Ghetto Sub": College tested, hoodrat approved.
Special shout out to Tina for her help with this review, and for possibly being Ghetto Sub's #1 fan.
Went here today for the first time with some co-workers. Â Good subs. Â I got the steak sub with extra peppers. Â It was a little too heavy on the lettuce, and could use more steak. Â However, it had good taste, the bread tasted fresh, and the ingredients in the sub seemed fresh as well. Â Only bottle or can pop, no fountain.
