Today was my second time to go to Paschalls. I liked it so much the first time, i was looking forward to going back. Â We got there early, there were fewer thn 10 people there. Â However, we waited and waited "in line" at the bar. Â She ignored us and instead served whoever walked up after us. Â I met a frind there and he said he'd been having that trouble since he walked in. Â What a dissapointment. We decided that we could go somewhere else and could've already finished a drink in the time we'd waited! And they were empty! Â We walked to Hickory St Lounge, what a great move. Â I'd never been there, the bartenders were great. Â So from now on, it's Hickory St or The Abbey Inn, where you will actually be served a drink!
Review Source:So you're in Denton, when you decide you want a decently priced, well mixed drink in a classy prohibition area speakeasy bar where the bartenders dress the part? Just walk upstairs to Paschall!
Enter and you can just smell the class coming out of that room. Books, a chessboard, fantastic elegant and comfortable furniture are just the start. Walk over to the bar and take a look at their extensive list of mixed beverages, wines, and beers. Oh, and no need to be dressy... shorts and a t-shirt are fine.
The bartenders are dressed to suit the bar, and are really great at making drinks. They mix it right in front of you (and everyone else), and they make it correctly! That's hard to find around these parts. Most people just throw the stuff in and shake it up... not here. These drinks are amazing AND very well priced.
The atmosphere allows for some great conversation with friends or a date, and is really conducive to relaxing the evening away.
Not sure what else positive I can say about this place. It's an awesome bar if you're into something classy but not dressy, someplace that's pretty quiet where a good intelligent conversation can be held, and delicious drinks can be had. Highly recommend this place!
Pascal's biggest problem is that it's no longer a secret. I've tried to go twice since my very enjoyable initial visit and have been turned away from it being at capacity both times. It truly is awesome though - laid back, great drink selection (they do Old Fashioneds quite well), with lots of board games, books, darts, etc.
It's just quite frustrating when you know there's a good chance you won't even be able to get in. Best to go earlier in the day.
Overall my first trip to Paschall's was very good. Cocktails were amazing and I love the care they use when crafting them. For the quality of the drinks, prices are very reasonable. Much more expensive than other places in town but for the quality and quiet-ish atmosphere it's worth it. The only negative was the cigarette smoke made it almost unpleasant to enjoy my cocktail.
Review Source:Fantastic environment, love the books and chess tables set up, but its a hipstery smoke hole. Would go way more if it wasn't so smoked up all the time. Music is usually good, running the indie/hipster gamut. From what legend says the guys from Midlake were a driving behind this bar, and that magic witch salts in the walls kept it from burning in the great Denton squarefire of 1887 or something.
Review Source:Went here for the first time on Saturday. This particular speakeasy offers a variety of craft drinks and beer. As you enter up the stairs above Andy's bar, it seems as you've been sent back to the 1920's. Antique  The decor is interesting and very retro. The ambiance is very laid back. It's refreshing to find a bar that you can walk in while not feel crowded.
The bar is filled with interesting characters as well. The bartenders are busy shaking their hands in the sky as they build you craft martinis. They are very meticulous and follow a complex process of making your drink. I admire their attention to chilling their glass and placing the garnish on your drinks very carefully.
Also, in the other room away from the bar are several lounges that you can sit at and a place to play darts. If you're a chess fiend they offer you a super large chess piece set.
If you're up for a martini your best bets seem to be the french pearl and the espresso martini. The french pearl is an absinthe and mint based martini with notes of lemon and sweetness. The espresso martini is a delicious vodka martini that's very rich and on the sweeter side with creamy notes of chocolate. This is probably the best martini. My girlfriend and i really loved it. We could have drank a whole bucket of the vodka martini.
Each martinis run around 6.50-8 bucks. It's surprisingly cheap considering many martini bar's i've been to price them higher.
Overall, would probably come here again.
I would be here daily but for the cigarette smoke. It has an abundance of charm and atmosphere, not to mention cocktails galore beyond the expected. Sadly, even when it's empty (not often), it reeks of stale cigarettes.
It's also small enough and closed in enough that if you can't really deal with smelling like an ashtray the rest of the night, you just can't hang here. Hence my 3 stars. Otherwise, what an amazing place for Denton to have.
Oh, Paschall. How I love you. Also how I hate you.
My first experience with Paschall was with fellow Yelper Natalie R. We went for some after-work-venting-drinks, and the quiet, tucked away nature of Paschall (which kindly allows me to chain-smoke myself into oblivion) seemed very well suited for the occasion.
As far as ambience goes, we're all pretty aware that Paschall is a hipster bar. The decor is basically your parents' basement den, shag carpeting and all. I'm 90% sure they robbed my aunt's house for some of the furniture. Their massive book collection is excellent, the seating is quite comfortable, and the lighting allows you to lurk to your heart's content.
Paschall makes a lot of solid cocktails. It's pricey, but I don't mind paying more for nicer drinks. They make a pretty solid White Russian, and the most perfect G&T I've had at this point in my life. They have a pretty regular rotation of house-infused liquor, which generally is used in some fancy, signature cocktail of the week. They use fresh accoutrements for the drinks, which is probably my favorite part. I mean, you can use some premium liquor for your well drinks, but if your mint/limes/oranges are way past their prime, you're wasting my time.
Honestly, had I written this review a month or two ago, I would have rated it 4 or 5 stars - the cocktails are really that delicious. The service is hit or miss, but I expect the aloof bartender here. What really turned me off was more or less my entire last experience at Paschall.
I waited 20 minutes at the bar to be served. Now, I'd totally dismiss this, since they were a busy on a Friday night, but the bartender was serving people BEHIND me in line. Annoying, but again, busy night. I ordered two double G&Ts. The bartender told me my total was $16. Rough for two drinks, but okay. I gave him a $20 bill, and he returned with $2. Somewhere, in the void between my G&Ts and Aha's "Take On Me" filtering through the speakers, $2 disappeared. I attempted to get the attention of one of the bartenders, but no dice. I was short-changed and I wasn't even being acknowledged.
Also, the G&T wasn't as good as it should have been. Perhaps it was sullied, as my innocence had been stolen from me in the form of $2.
All in all, Â I probably won't be back any time soon. Which is unfortunate, because there's so much I like about Paschall Bar, and it's one of two places I take friends for drinks. I'll just stick to Oak Street. Clayton makes a pretty mean G&T anyway.
Went here for the first time this weekend. Â I had heard great things about this bar and it lived up to my expectations. Â The atmosphere is amazing. Â The drinks are amazing. The view of the Denton square from the front room is amazing. Â I will definitely be a returning customer.
I ordered the hot buttered rum which was superb. Â It's a seasonal drink so get it if you can! Â It was very smooth and allowed me to at least pretend that it is Christmas time even though temperatures are still in the 80s.
A small group of friends and I were in the square for a car show on a Saturday afternoon. After seeing the cars, a tasty and greasy lunch at the loop hole and plenty of rummaging in the junk shops, we stumbled into this bar. Downstairs looks quite skanky (by this I mean, dark, dirty and smelly) especially in the day time.
The guy at the door suggested we go upstairs to Andys Bar. I hesitate to write a review because we felt as though we found something so incredibly special. I so want to keep it hidden. It is very small but well decorated, cozy, classy  with a cool bartender making unusual and delicious drinks. It is one of the coolest bars I have ever been in. It makes you feels as though you have stepped into a different world. Very laid back and sophisticated.  I am looking forward to returning.
Paschall's is a great spot. It's a bit hidden on the Square, which gives it a "secret club" type vibe. The interior is very classy, and you generally find a type of crowd that matches, but isn't unwelcoming. The view of the Courthouse and The Square is great, if you can get there fast enough to grab seats in the front. My only qualm is that some of the drink prices are a bit much. That being said, the selection is great, from Lone Star to unpronounceable Belgian greatness. I absolutely recommend this place to any and everyone that wants a night out with friends where you can actually talk to people.
Review Source:Summer is going to be very unkind to Paschall unless they figure out a solution to the sweltering heat issue currently plaguing this bar. Â I was there this past weekend and had to leave because it was incredibly hot in there uncomfortably stuffy. Â I hear their roof is flat and black and therefore a vortex for the hottest flares of the sun's surface, but for christ's sweet sake, if I'm going to pay their drink prices, I kinda want my drink to stay cold. Â God forbid I have to go down to Andy's basement.
Review Source:Quite the swanky lil' place and something new for Denton. You'll definitely need to come prepared to spend some money and leave smelling like an ashtray, but it's a great place to just relax and talk. They strictly moderate the 49 person capacity, so if you get there late on a busy night, expect to wait on a staircase for an unspecified amount of time. That being said, it's badass if you're one of the 49 already in that doesn't have to deal with being packed elbow to elbow in a hot and sweaty bar.
It has a really  nice ambiance and, in my opinion, is the best decorated bar in Denton of its kind. If you can catch it early in the night before the smoke gets too thick, it's nice to just sip slowly and listen to some unique mixes and/or older music. Kind of makes you feel like you're living in another time. Definitely a bit more scene/hipster, but still has a very "real" feel to it with very friendly bartenders.  Again, depending on what time and night you go, the type of crowd may vary.
Perfect place to watch the sunset on the Courthouse. I highly recommend the espresso martinis.
The crowd is respectful and friendly. Didn't get a frat boy, douche wagon or meat market vibe at all. Think intellectual, organic, coexist, quasi-sophisticated. Â
The music is at a perfect level so you're not yelling to have a conversation.
Drinks are on the high end of Denton but worth it given the cool, unique atmosphere.
Minus a star for the smoke and lack of good ventilation. Â Like others said, get there early to avoid the inescapable plume.
This place is by far, one of the coolest bars I've ever been to. The decor, lighting and atmosphere made for a great environment to hang out with friends. The playlist is awesome and it's just loud enough but not so loud that you can't hear each other in normal conversation. Â On the other hand, if you can't stand cigarette smoke, it's kind of hard to get away from. Still, a place like this is hard to beat.
Review Source:Denton can now boast a hip spot on the square called Paschall. The hipster bar is a throwback to the days when bars were simple but personable. The bar is small and full of retro decor. I liked that it had a couple of rooms to hang out in in and cool couch nook. The bartender was nice and the prices were reasonable. The reason why I am giving a 3 instead of the 4 is due to the smoke and that my drink was average...nothing to write home about. They specialize in classic cocktails. The crowd of course is college students, but I went early and that didn't bother me. I hear they are strict on capping the number that go in to keep it from overcrowding. I will definitely go back.
Review Source:It has not taken long for this little bar to be discovered. Great scene, great music, excellent drinks. The first week they opened people were barely trickling in and now the place is often at maximum occupancy on the weekend nights.
The scene: beautifully remodelled bar full of bookshelves, ecclectic books, 60s / 70s retro furniture, fancy glass ashtrays, long windows with flowing red curtains that overlook the Denton Square. There are chess sets and two dart boards. The walls are covered in concert posters or art that was clearly purchased at a thrift store / antique mall. Ernest Hemingway art, check. Buffalo head bust, check. This bar is above Andi's Bar and for newcomers a little hard to find, ask the staff.
The music: This bar is partially owned by the local band Midlake, and I'd like to think they have a say in the music. You'll hear 60s, 70s, newer indie or psychedelic music as well and at a decent decibel.
The drinks: Thus far I have only tried the holiday / fall drinks, which is the pumpkin martini (amazing), hot buttered rum, apple cider. Besides the extensive menu of cocktails the bartenders know most traditional drinks you probably couldn't get many other places around here. With the selection comes the prices. Drinks here run a lot higher than most places in Denton.
The only drawbacks of this place is that is gets incredibly smokey AND often fills up to their max capacity on popular nights. I recommend if you want to check it out come in the afternoon when it's a bit slower (they have great hours! Currently they're open at 4pm). Great place to pick up a book or have a drink with a friend while it's still light out and the place is't a plume of smoke and loud drunken conversations.
My wishlist for this place? Open up a roof patio, have it smoke-free inside. :)
I almost don't want to write a review, so people won't know about this cool little place, but then again this is why i must. Â First off the place does "rock" as one other person said even if you have to wait in line to get in. Â The waiting is actually worth it as they don't let it get over croweded. Â This makes you feel like you own a little section of the bar to yourself without people overcrowding you. Â Yes it is way to smokey in there(don't hesitate to open the windows).
They had to spend a good amount to get the place looking like it did and it shows. Â You really wouldn't expect to see something like this in denton, which is why i hope it doesn't become overrun with too many college kids. Â
The staff was friendly and helpful. Â I'd even say they were on top of their game as far as customer service goes. Â Five out of five for those guys and gals.
Drinks....well this is why the place didn't get five out of five. Â As the bar boasted upscale liquor and drinks i was highly disappointed to only see makers mark as their "high end" bourbon. Â Matter of fact they really didn't have any selection of high end liquor. Â Prices were high for denton, but low when in contrast to dallas etc... Â For this type of place you really can't complain.
I ordered an old fashion, and while i must admit i'm a bit picky, this was horribly "watered" down with club soda. Â On top of that i had to upgrade to makers mark(i wish they had a bigger selection of boubons). Â A huge huge disappointment with it. Â This is not what an old fashion should be and that may sound like a snob, but it's true. Â Now if you are wondering about the other drinks they were excellent!!! :)
On that note i really really do like this place, it's a breath of fresh air for Denton even if you can't breathe from all the smoke. Â With that being said i think this place would do great being non smoking! Â Not only would it help keep some of the younger college kids away and it would be great on your lungs and not have you smell so bad when you leave!!
This place rocks, except for the smoke- but I blame that on the people of Denton who need to quit that shit!!
The atmosphere is lovely, and if you get there early enough, it is not so smokey and you can hang out with friends, or take a book off the shelf and chill. The music is always good, too.
All the staff are supper nice.

Paschall bar is new to Denton. The prices are about what you would expect for Denton and the atmosphere is great. The setting is sort of a mix between a 70's lounge and a cigar shop. It's on the 2nd floor above Andy's bar and gives a good view of the downtown square. They have several vintage couches and chairs that are actually quite comfortable. They have board games available if you feel like lounging around. They do allow pipes and cigars which makes it a good place hang out and get warm for a while.
