You always wonder about a place that has all 5 stars. The other reviewers have it right, this is truly as good as it gets for a pub/lounge.
My Fiance and I ordered their Lamb dip and fish tacos; along with two pints of their brown beer (the name slips me). The waitress who served us was just delightful. We thought this was the start of a great meal. It was. The beers, great. The lamp dip and fish tacos full of flavor. Everything was very fresh and well made.
A few hours later we both commented on how great we felt. We'd had a less desirable experience elsewhere on our road trip.
Great food, great service, great brews and a nice atmosphere. 5 all around!
Great place to eat and the beer is even better. Â I don't think you can get a bad meal there. Â We have been several times and everything has been great. Â We had a burger with everything on it, including Jalapenos. Â The onion rings are not to be missed, they are made with beer batter from the beer that is made on the spot.
Review Source:We stopped in Susanville at the Lassen Ale Works at Pioneer Saloon, this place looked sketchy from the outside but it was very nice on the inside. A true example of not judging a book by it's cover. The food was delicious and freshly made to order and the staff was attentive and on top of everything. They were very friendly and helpful. The bathrooms were clean. Our party enjoyed everything that was ordered; cheeseburger, fish and chips, brat sandwich and beer sampler.
Review Source:The Pioneer is now the home of the Lassen Ale Company so the reviews that state that there are no beers on tap are out of date.
They have several excellent locally brewed ales on tap and I was able to try the IPA and Porter, both are excellent. If you're in Susanville with a group the pitchers are a bargain.
Service was very friendly and laid back. The place was quite busy when I visited and it was clear that they had recently converted to new management. I'm not going to ding them a star for growing pains because the beer and food are very good.
Susanville is surrounded by cattle ranches and I recommend that you try their burgers and steaks. I'd like to see more local meat options on the menu.
There is a sea of fast food restaurants in Susanville, but I think you should skip them and go to the Pioneer, it's awesome!
By the way, the building is pretty cool and has been in use as a tavern since like 1850!
Susanville is not known for its fine restaurants, but this is the best in town. Â Pioneer has the oldest continuously operating bar in California and it is a beautiful long wooden western bar with brass taps. Â The owners added a microbrewery in back (very spacious) that serves good brews. Â The food is standard American fare but very tasty and well prepared.
The Pioneer is definitely worth your patronage!
An oasis in Susanville. Great atmosphere, very friendly service, excellent food, and darn tasty beer!
Was passing through Susanville the other day and wanted something different to eat than the normal small town fare one usually gets. Â Asked around and heard about this place from a grocery store clerk. The seating area and bar are surprisingly upscale for a small town restaurant and the menu is pleasantly bold for small towns as well. I had the lamb dip and was very pleased. I also tried their eight beers on tap and very much enjoyed many of them. (tasting flight). A great find for the area.
Heading to Reno, we stopped in Susanville for much needed grub. This place was a wonderful surprise! We got a table right away on a Saturday night, though the place was definitely hopping. My companions ordered the Bizz Johnson Golden, and the Almanor Amber Ale. Since I was driving I went bubble water, but had to do some sampling. The Golden was light and went down easy, but I preferred the Amber Ale.
As an appetizer we got the Bizz Johnson beer-battered onion rings. A good sized portion, the batter was excellent and the rings disappeared quickly. Good stuff.
I went for the fish & chips. Again, the Bizz Johnson batter served well, giving the 3 healthy sized pieces of battered Cod an excellent flavor enhancement. The fries were fresh cut, a healthy sized portion, but stuck under the fish, they ultimately got a bit soggy, but were excellent.
All in all an excellent meal for the road weary traveller. 5 stars.
Ok I'm a fried onion ring expert..and theirs where fabulous. Â Not to mention she dipping sauce made them better than perfect. Â I had the Fish and Chips for dinner and they where just as good. Â Huge portion could be shared! Â Now for the service, we chose to sit at th bar and had one of th sweetest, efficient bartenders who made a great Martini and a wonderful personality..Thank you Jenny
Review Source:This is the old Pioneer Lounge. Now Lassen Ale Works. Anyone who has been coming to Susanville for a while knows the history of this space. And what a colorful history.
But this new place that has opened has done extensive renovation to the old Pioneer while still keeping some of that old bar feel with the long old bar in the usual spot, the nice wood floor still in place, the pool tables in back, and the off-blood colored floor and wall tiles in the restrooms. They added in some brewing equipment and make various microbrews on premises. They did a nice job trying to keep some of the old feel while upgrading the facility substantially.
The food menu is pretty basic. Just a few salads, a burger, some fish and chips, some chicken sandwich, and not much else. I would love a larger menu. But hopefully they are keeping things simple to start out.
The fish and chips are the house specialty so I ordered those. They are made from cod and come in a large basket, very "English style" in presentation, with the customary fries, tarter, and such. The fish is really good, well breaded with breading that is just a bit spicy, very crispy, thick, moist, really good tasting fish. The fries were pretty standard, I went back and forth as to whether or not I thought they were fresh cut or the usual frozen fries. I am going toward them being fresh cut.
Service was okay. One of the owners was coming around and checking up on everyone and did a good job filling in the gaps when the server was avoiding some tables for long time periods.
I really hope this place survives here, I think they have a really good chance since Susanville is really limited when it comes to finding places to eat and the food here at least what I tried is really good, the atmosphere is nice, and the price seems to be reasonable. It is great to have a very good restaurant option in Susanville. I hope to try the brews, when I don't have more driving to do!
I went in early evening on opening weekend at the new microbrew, Lassen Ale Works. They were out of a couple of theirs beers, but maybe a good thing. Hopefully they underestimated the market for a pretty cool pub. I had the stout. The flavor was  great! Hint of bourbon. Wow! Fish and chips were ok. Batter not my favorite but not bad. Fish was cooked pretty good.  Staff was great and everyone seemed friendly.
Review Source:I came here in the middle of the day looking for lunch (someone had recommended their food to me). Â Alas, they serve lunch... but only if you are willing to *drink* your lunch. Â All their beer is bottled (nothing on tap) and prices are good. Â It was pretty dead at 1:30 p.m. but it seems like it would be a more fun place in the evening. Â Bartender was super friendly.
