Stopped by here with the owner of The Brews Cruise (the original owner) to check this place out and learn my way around a bit.  I enjoyed the setting, brewery tour was cool, but they all kind of blur together after you've seen a few of them.  I remember they had a lot of outdoor space and seemed like they had some really good music acts coming through too.  This would have been around 2009 the last time I was there.  I enjoyed the beer and just hanging out, got there early on a weekday, not much happening then.

We stopped in the afternoon prior to the taproom being open. One of the brewers have me a taste and sold me a growler. The beer was great and this guy certainly went above and beyond . If you are in this area please visit them

What a fantastic brewery with a great selection of organic brews! This is coming from a major beer snob....

The brewery is conveniently located in an industrial area right off hwy 40 and a few minutes from downtown Black Mountain (try The Trail-head for dinner/lunch). I have the West Coast IPA, Pisgah Pale Ale, Pisgah Triple Ale (fantastic belgian ale), and the Vortex II Barley Wine. My favorite being the IPA and Triple.

This place was sorta hard to find considering the sign is tiny and the building looks like an old warehouse. Look for the large mural on the side of the building to know you've arrived.

If your in the Asheville area looking for somewhere different to explore, check out Pisgah Brewing Company! You want be disappointed.

-Our next stop on our Asheville beer tour was Pigsah. I respect Pigsah since I was told it was one of the original breweries that really helped Asheville gain it's microbrew popularity. Now I read all over yelp that the place was damn near impossible to find and boy were people right. It truly is hidden! I don't mind hidden, but what I don't like is that there is next to NO signage anywhere to be found. Luckily we saw a couple people drinking at a picnic table so we determined this must be it.

-Stepping foot through the garage door you are blasted with a yeast smell that is extremely over powering.  I have smelled this faintly at other breweries in the past, but this was the potent I've experienced.

-As for the negatives...the lay out is huge, but a lot of wasted space.  All the tables and chairs look like street side pick ups or garage sale furniture.  The bathroom is further into the warehouse area and is the type of bathroom I expected in this area.

-As for the beers..I had a sampler of about 10 of their house beers.  I will be honest I came strictly to try the Bacon Stout (wasn't very good). I also had the Vortex II, Nitro Stout, IPA of course, Pale Ale, Porter, and a few others that I didn't get to write down.  All the beers were decent as best, with my favorite being the IPA but unfortunately my least favorite IPA on the entire trip.

-All in all I will say that the drive was worth it for the history but if I ever went back to Asheville I wouldn't waste the gas and time.  I wasn't there for live music but I think once the party starts at night I'm sure its a fantastic place to hang out for the locals. As for the beer however I will say I wasn't impressed by any, and the setting would look so much nicer if they just bought a few sets of bar height tables and stools.

Pisgah Brewery puts out some of the best beer in WNC!!! The taproom is great & features a rotating cast of beers made on site and other great local beers from other high-quality local craft brewers! Dogs welcome in taproom outdoor smoking/fire pit area!(except summer outdoor field shows for safety reasons)

The taproom features an indoor stage that was recently expanded to accommodate more music/beer loving patrons! I have seen many shows inside and really enjoy the intimate setting that allows for great crowd interaction with both local and national touring acts. The New Mastersounds, Cedric Burnside, Charlie Hunter, Shane Pruitt Band, to name just a few shows we have seen in the past year:-) Food trucks set up out back for most indoor shows along with a nice fire pit and picnic tables for outdoor chilling. Large doors open the venue up to the picnic area giving it a great indoor/outdoor feel!

Late spring all the way through the summer, outdoor shows are held in the field located onsite, which features a full-size stage big enough to accommodate most national touring acts! Sharon Jones, Maceo Parker, Dark Star Orchestra, Umphrey's McGee, Toubab Krewe, Leftover Salmon, Keller Williams and may more have made appearances outdoors in the field @ Pisgah Brewery! Most events feature a variety of food trucks and venders set up in along the outside of the field area! Go see an outdoor show for some beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains!

Took the Brewery Tour!  Loved the hang out bar while we waited for the tour to begin and of course same place where we ended the tour sampling. Kind of hard to find but worth is (the gps are a a bit off). The guide mentioned the Chocolate Bacon Snout...sounds gross so I had to try it! Still gross, but the porter was great and came home with a growler of it.

Disclaimer - I'm not a beer snob but do enjoy an occasional libation or two. A beer fan told me about this place and I'm glad he did as it didn't disappoint.

This place has a super local feel to it. I grabbed a flight of beers and could have easily gone for two - the selection is pretty vast for a smaller brewery. There wasn't really a week link in the bunch. Bartenders and patrons are super friendly and laid back.

I see where many people say it's hard to find, but it's right where the GPS shows and then pretty obvious once you walk in the door. They have a large mural on the side of the building - if you don't see that, you're in the wrong place.

great place for a local brew.  loved all of their beers especially their pale ale.  They also have a very cool concert venue located right behind the brewery.  highly recommend going to concert here and grabbing a few cold ones before the show.  i will be back!

First off, this place was a bit hard to find.  The 8.5" x 11" sign on the first building on the right in the industrial park was small.  Once we circled around and found the door & the bar, things only got better!

Tried a flight of 4 of their beers for $4 and got a pint of the Blueberry Wheat, which was excellent.  The Coconut Porter was probably the darkest beer my fiancee and I ever liked.  We both kept sipping our sample of it and saying, "We don't like dark beer or coconut, but there's something about this that's actually quite delicious!"

My mom thought the place looked like a dive, but soon warmed to the location and actually had the first beer I've really ever seen her drink.

After a while we wandered into the "pool room", pas their outside tables and in a little hanger-sized room.  Loved the clock permanently stopped at 4:20. Ha!  Played pool there for a half-hour or more.

Fun place, good beer, and boy was it hopping at 2:30pm on a random Thursday afternoon!

Well off the beaten path, Pisgah sets itself apart from the Asheville breweries simply by their location, a 30 minute drive from Asheville.  Combine it with a trip to the cute  Black Mountain downtown area and you have a nice half day trip from Asheville.  On a Saturday afternoon, Pisgah was hopping, which was surprising since there is literally nothing of interest within walking distance.  On that note Pisgah does a great job of offering concerts to help entertain guests.  The brewery itself though is not that cozy.  There's no tables inside, just barstools and simple picnic tables outside, baking in the sun on a hot day.  So unless you're up for cozying up to the bar, it's not that welcoming.

Another score for Asheville here. This was our stop after French Broad and Highland on Saturday, so we came in at about 6pm. Black Mountain is about 15 minutes out of downtown towards the Northeast, it wasn't super easy to find but a sign nearby helped us get there.
It's located in an industrial area with big warehouses around, and the door to go in just leads to a long hallway that finally opens up into a large area, bar directly ahead of you and not much else besides a garage door leading outside to picnic tables. Beer list wasn't as big as I'd hoped, but they had a variety of other breweries on tap too so there maybe wasn't room for their own stuff or they didn't have enough kegged at the time. I tried two beers, the Leaf Amber was my fave, and we sat and relaxed for a bit. Not a big crowd here but maybe it was early, but they definitely have room for it if a big crowd was to come out, the outdoor area spills off into the receiving area for numerous other businesses.
Very cool place. Anxious to go back.

I don't care what people say about the service here, the beers are the best around. Try something unique (bacon porter) and then get a Pisgah Pale. I'd argue that it is indeed Asheville's best all around beer.  You won't regret the drive, and finding the place is half the fun.  Make a day of it or plan to see a show at their outdoor stage.

If you get a chance to go to a show here during the summer it will be heaven on earth.  The brews are all amazing.  I haven't tasted a Pisgah brew I didn't think was spot on.

To wrap up the afternoon of August 6, a friend and I headed to Pisgah Brewing Company and arrived just before the pouring rain started. Pisgah makes a number of certified, organic beers and the tap room is open daily, cash only. In addition to their award-winning beers, the brewery often has live music. The atmosphere is very casual - it's a brewery, after all - mostly standing room only except for bar stools, outside picnic tables, and people sitting on the music stage when there isn't a performance. We both had one of their new brews, Pisgah American Wheat, and by the time we left, the place was packed. It was a very nice ending to a great afternoon in Black Mountain.

    A tale of two reviews:

Tale one (or why I love Pisgah beers and will visit the brewery again): Pisgah beers are amazing.  In my opinion, Pisgah beers are the best in Western North Carolina.  Slightly better than Wedge or LAB, and more consistent than French Broad or Jack of the Wood--I've never had a bad Pisgah beer.  The IPA is perfect and the dark beers are a great way to get through a long winter.  Yesterday was my first visit to the brewery and it's a fun, relaxed place to hang out. As Kassandra K said, it's hard to find and you won't be excited when you first drive up, but I was pleasantly surprised once inside.  Lots of seating--indoor and outdoor and a fun atmosphere.  5 stars.

Tale two (or why I won't ever take a tour of Pisgah brewery again and why I'm for the first time concerned about their quality control).  Being the good beer dork, I asked for a tour--fortunately they had one scheduled for 2:00.  At 2:20, a bearded hipster with a trucker hat (what were the odds?) started the tour up.  Now, I don't want to disparage him--he seemed like a nice enough guy--but the tour was the worst brewery tour I've ever been on.  He knew almost nothing about the brewing process, said many things that were incorrect, and didn't seem real interested in figuring out what the correct answers were. The worst part was the cleanliness (or lack thereof).  I honestly don't know how they passed inspections--think cobwebs and peeling paint.  The closet with the grain mill had an unidentified growth on the ceiling and a bucket with spent grain had flies swarming around it (seriously).  The cleanliness clearly doesn't translate into bad beer, but it does make you question what the hell they're thinking touring people through there.  I know they've only got 5 employees, but you'd think they'd either (1) train the dude doing the tour, (2) have someone else do the tour, or (3) cancel the tours all together.   If tours are supposed to help customers understand the process of brewing beer and sell them on the quality of the product, this one isn't helping.

I'd give the tour one star, but since I love the beer and atmosphere so much, I'd give the Pisgah Brewing Company as a whole 4 stars.

Good lord. How have I not reviewed this place before now?  This is one of the few places  in the region that, as a resident of the GREAT Asheville,  makes me jealous.  One of the best breweries in the region.  I put it up there with Wedge for some beers and much better for others.

The setting is remarkable and they have started  doing  outdoor concerts in an adjacent field with a well built wooden stage. I saw Steel Pulse there.  They just had Galactic and Cowboy Mouth.  They  will have Dark Star Orchestra.  Hippies galore! (I like Indie rock).   Loved it though.  Honestly, you really get the feel of all the cool people that I just want to know in Black Mountain/Suwannee area.

The dark beers are special to me.  Porter and  stout are great.  One is often served at French Broad Chocolate Factory as a chocolate porter float!  The IPA is really great, but Wedge beats it by a nose.  The pale ale is the best by far in the region.  And one time...back in January...they had 13 dark beers.  Many of them are theirs and  specially made seasonal.

Two that I can't get out of my head are the Valdez Coffee Stout and the Bacon Stout.  The latter is so rice it almost gets too much for a second one.  The Valdez is just simply amazing.  I miss it as it is usually a winter beer I think.

    Buy Pisgah...put on a bumper sticker...go there...and see a show  there too.

No credit cards...but  they have an ATM.

First of all, this place was SUPER hard to find.  Their website also didn't work on my phone.  My friend and I who love great beer went in to have a couple flights and see what they had to offer.

The beers were mediocre.  The only one that was even slightly worthwhile was the Belgian style Balkan Porter.  Everything else was pretty one-noted and some were just not good.

To top it off, the bartender was extremely rude (we had also heard this from other friends who came last week) and was EXTREMELY pretentious. Every time we ordered more beers he would scoff about something we would say.

It is a cool place in the back of a warehouse, but don't expect great service! It is great that their beers are organic, but I just wish they tasted better!

One of my favorite brewery tours I've ever been on.  While visiting  Asheville on a short trip, I made time in my schedule to visit here twice.  It's great to see how a small operation like Pisgah runs and their beer philosophy.  The beers are cheap, and the atmosphere of the tasting room is fun.  Pisgah serves up excellent local craft beer in a fun way.

    This place is great!

The beers are PHENOMENAL, the staff is friendly and laid back, and the vibe is soooo cool.  It's literally the back room of a warehouse in an industrial park.  Absolutely no pretense what-so-ever.  If you don't know it's there, there's no way in hell you are going to just happen in for a drink.  We knew about it, and still had trouble finding it.  There is a sign next to the door with 1" high letters.  So, be on the lookout.

There is a small stage in the room which apparently hosts original music regularly... mostly derivatives of the jam band genre... not my cup o' tea musically, but harmless enough, I suppose.  Certainly no where near objectionable enough to forgo the opportunity to drink Pisagh's amazing brews.  By the way, they don't just have their own brews on tap.  They also offer lots great beers from other breweries.

From talking to the bartender, it seems they have outdoor concerts when the weather is warmer. (We were there in January)  On the way out, I checked out the outdoor stage, and it looked pretty badass.  Those outdoor evening concerts, nestled between remote Appalachian hills with a frosty pint of Pisgah in your hand must be sublime.  I will definitely go back for some of that.

Pisgah rocks. Though I didn't go on the tour, I love the beer and the tasting room. Don't go expecting a shiny brewery stocked with tons of branded merchandise. As Anna R. says, it's warehouse-ish; I sat on a picnic table indoors. And as others have noted, it definitely needs a sign. I wouldn't have found the place if the BF hadn't been there before. The IPA is seriously killer!

I love this place! My boyfriend and I sat and had a few in the tasting room, and then took the tour. Everyone was nice, it was laid back (and the tour was free.)

The beer is excellent. I'll go back again for sure.

How are there only two reviews of this place?!

I'm new to Asheville area and went here last night for the first time. Yes, it needs a sign. Not sure I would have found it if I hadn't been following a local. But it was a lovely warm evening, and there was certainly no better place to be.

Warehouse-ish bar area, with a band that started kicking around 8pm. Usually I feel a little put-upon when bands just appear, but the music was great and funky, if a bit loud. Chilled out on the lovely grassy area out back - it has a little stream running through it and the kids were loving it. Reminded me of where Winnie the Pooh might hang out - you know, if he were a beer-drinking kind of bear.

Up near the warehouse, a Jamaican guy was grilling and selling some delicious jerk chicken. Had another beer as the stars came out and the bonfire kept things cozy. The crowd was friendly and fun. I predict many a summer afternoon/evening hanging out at this place....

This place SERIOUSLY needs a sign.

It's inside an industrial park, with almost no signage at all to help you find it. My friends and I were about to ditch, when I just walked out of the car and into the building.

With that said, it was totally worth the frustration. This place was the first name given to us by a total beer fan. Pisgah is essentially a small home-brew operation with a small batch of loyal employees who produce organic, micro-brew beer, about 2,500 barrels a year. It's truly local, since they don't ship outside a 30-mile radius around asheville, and they don't outsource any brewing. It's been voted best beer in NC 2 times out of the 4 (almost 5) years its been around.

But that's just numbers. My personal opinion: some of the best beer I have every had. They had variety, they were friendly (we showed up before they were open and they still gave us a tour), and they had a bar and music venue that looked very cool. We tried tons of samples and walked away with a growler of pale ale and a 22 of barley wine for about $20. Absolutely worth it.

If you're around asheville and you like beer, you must make it out here.

Now that i've written such nice things for them, they should get that sign ASAP.

Thursdays Pisgah Brewing Company hosts a sort of "open house."  It is located across the street from The Black Mountain Center on old 70.  They accept donations for "tastes" of their brews.  This is such a wonderful "Asheville" experience.  They're open from 5-7 pm on Thursday.  Get your beer and go hang out with the locals in the fenced in grassy area.  It is kid friendly thing.
