This is probably my favorite bar around. Â It's a super chill hole-in-the-wall dive bar with cheap strong drinks and friendly staff. Â They have little tables and padded benches to sit at. There is also a parking lot and plenty of off street parking too.
I like coming here for shows (there's a stage) or dancing for girl's night. Â FYI, people can smoke inside so be prepared.
Great place!
I would have loved this place if it were not for everyone chain smoking. The decor is amazing! Bartender seemed cool. But the smoking was disgusting. Not even a door or window cracked open for ventilation. I don't understand how they are still in business. This is definitely I place I could see myself enjoying on a weekly basis but you will never see me here again until they get rid of the smoking. Sad
Review Source:Alright so I guess if you're about 40-50 years of age or a hipster, this is a good bar for you. Â Also, if you're into a bit of the country-western feel. Â Not really my type, though.
The drinks are very reasonably priced, but they're cash-only. Â Personally, I like to just give the bartender my card and leave it open. Â That's me, though.
The smoke! Â Oh, dear, god, the smoke! Â I understand there's a certain appeal to being able to smoke in a bar, but please, for the love of all we find holy, open the doors! Â I choke back tears when I walk in here and reek of cigarettes when I walk out, and I don't smoke!
I suppose if you're a regular here, you're ok, but if you're like me and only show up once in a blue moon (pun intended!) or if you're a first-timer, it can get pretty boring.
Cass is a pretty cool bartender, though. I'll give props on that.
Overall, a decent bar, but not for me. Â Like I said, if you're more into the country western type and you smoke three packs a day, here you go.
Being a livermore native, I MUST give props to my favorite local watering hole. Â Polomonies is cheap, their drinks are strong, and the interior decor hasn't changed since 1961. Â
People do have a... Â tendancy to smoke inside. Â But this only gives the place a 'speakeasy' type feel. Â Whenever the police arrive, all patrons snuff their smokes and the ashtrays 'magically' disappear. Â I've always loved that.
Mostly, I go for the aesthetics, as I don't usually go out drinking, but I'm almost assured of running into friends when I do.
Every once in a great while, I will find myself in a seedy bar in a seedy part of town and, despite clearly looking out of place, can somehow manage to blend in. I mean, my friends who don't know me from my hometown (Livermore! What what!) days always ask, "you went WHERE?!" and bar patrons always ask, "what's a girl like YOU doing in a place like THIS?!"
And, well, that's because most people don't know that I earned my drinking stripes here. And maybe that's the best way to describe this bar. It's not for everyone, but it's lovable to those who love the finest (or sketchiest) of dive bars.
I went here for the first time in years this week and it was just as I remembered it. The smoke is intense though...so be warned that smoking is somehow overlooked here.
I also love how it looks like Santa gizzed all over it during the holidays.
People always say you should give a place more than one try before writing a negative review soooooooooooooo,
Had to do laundry at the local wash and dry. Â My machine couldn't accommodate the bedding and other large items I needed to clean. Â While waiting for these items to dry, I decided to get a quick beer at the Polomoni. Â
I walked in to the awful smell of cigarettes. Â 5 of the 6 patrons were smoking. Â As well as the bar tender!! Â Didn't this sort of thing get outlawed back in the 90's??
There were a couple of TV's on, but neither was showing a pivotal Giants playoff game. Â I asked if the game could be put on and one of the smokers spouted out "Screw the Giants!" Â O.K. Â Whatever, I wasn't planning on being there long anyway. Â The old hooker who was bar tending must have smelled fresh meat and started hitting on me. Â Um, sorry lady, I just want a beer and besides I'm married. Â I drank my beer quickly and left. Â Never to return again!!
I'm really not one to judge a place to harshly.  But this dive really needs to close because it is straight out of Livermore's  past and not it's future.
Beside the smoking violation, I have heard they buy their liqueur from Costco, which is also a no-no...
Update 3/5/11:
My review was apparently "flagged", but it was determined by Yelp staff to be within the guidelines of their review policy. Â I have ammneded it slightly at Yelp's request.
Sorry to whomever was offended. Â But the truth does hurt (doesn't it)...
It's fine. It's a bar. My sweetie and I saw a show there for free, our kinda people go there, and it's close to my house.
I'm cool with people smoking in bars, but if that bugs you, stay away. There is no fresh air, even with the front and back doors open. The bartender wasn't exactly rude, but I really hate it when bartenders snort and roll their eyes when you dare to ask for a water with your drink. Dude, it's hot. We've been running all over Livermore. My boyfriend is sweating. He ordered a beer and he tipped you. He's not fuckin' up by asking for a water and he's not playing the diva, making you run from one end of the bar to the other for his amusement.
Whatever. It's part of the ambience.
This was the ending of our evening out in the town. Â The girls and I walked 4 blocks and ended at Plomonis. Â definitely was a better setting, location, completely clean, friendly atmosphere, great lounging area, and it was creeper free even. being able to put a coin (or several) in the jukebox and dance around like no one was watching with my pals was the best EVER. Â The cab ride was even better he cracked us up.
(Over all my weekend was great. I don't get to see the ladies very often due to  mommy time, work or distance. I missed my honey and monsters like crazy though.)
Ab-so-lutely! After so many places in Livermore have gone the way of Ed Hardy, it's was nice to find another dive type bar where people were still friendly and doing what should always be done in a bar...have a good time!
Beer was cold, ashtrays were being used, and karaoke was bumping. If you need anything more on a Saturday, feel free to try one of the other establishments down the street. I'm sure you'll be able to spend $9 on some sort of blue cocktail concoction, get into a "bro-fight" with another aspiring ultimate fighter, and tongue lock all night with some girl you met on facebook. Cheers to you.
But as I plan on making this my local spot in the "Livamo", please stay out.
Good times.
One of my favorite bars in Livermore, hands down. The bartenders are super friendly, the jukebox is in phenomenal taste, you can smoke inside, the drinks are cheap, and the meatheads tend to drink elsewhere. Can you get any better for a divebar? If you're a snob or a clubber go elsewhere, but if you're looking for a very down to earth watering hole to avoid the hustle and bustle of the bar 'scene' and hang out with friends, this is your spot.
Review Source:Friendly place. Â What a bar should be.
Found this place while strolling the Livermore Wine Country Festival. Â We were attracted by the sounds of a good blues band (Honey Chile) playing inside. Â We felt welcomed in this classic bar. Made some small talk with some of the regulars. Â Nice young lady working the bar. Enjoyed some beer and music. Â Met the lady who is the morning bartender. Â We plan to make a morning visit here sometime.
Don't get me wrong. Â I LOVE dive bars.
Just......not......this one.
It looked dumpy from the outside and that is what drew us in. Â
At first swing of the door to enter we were greeted by clouds and clouds of billowing smoke trying to escape. Â Another, don't judge me, I do not smoke. Â My husband does. Â It does not bother me AT ALL when people smoke I just prefer some ventilation if I'm around. Â I don't know, maybe crack a door? Â A window? Â Turn on a fan and circulate the smoke? Â Something! Â There are some underground bars that we frequent because my husband can smoke (and the drinks are good) so don't trip.
The smoke aside, we make entry.
There are maybe six people inside and someone is playing some old tunes from the 50's and I think I heard some Elvis - it was so loud it was obnoxious. Â The bartender had to lean across the bar to meet my mouth to take our order. Â I could see if it was packed full of people but please turn it down twenty or thirty decibels at least.
It's big inside - they have a bunch of rattan looking couch sets if you feel like getting cozy - we didnt partake.
The drinks - they were 8.00 each and did not do much for us. Â The bartender was very nice - he gets the second star added.
We quickly sucked them down and crawled on our hands and knees to feel for the nearest exit.
I hope I don't offend any native Livermorian's but this place was awful.
Local, old, downtown watering hole. Polomoni's tries to be nothing else and they succeed. Do you want an inexpensive cocktail or cold beer? Do you want a lot of inexpensive cocktails and beer? Do you want to listen to a jukebox? Do you want to watch the local football games with a bunch of regulars? Do you want to b.s. with your friends or dance and sing or just get loud and have fun? Well, here is your place. No frills, no attitude, no hassle. A good pour and good prices. This is one of the good ol' joints that every town needs. i have Benn in here early in the morning to meet people, blue collar weekend side job guys, and I have been in a happy hour and I have been in too late some nights. Always been a good crown, if not always a large crowd, and I don't see the drug thing or dead beat thing going on here.
Stop in for a drink in a bar. Not a night club, not a meat market, not a restaurant, not a fancy place to hold your pinky high. Just a fun place to drink. And, that is all they are trying to be.
Saturday afternoon ... driving along 1st street looking for a hangout ... see the Polomoni's sign and BINGO! ... that looks like the kind of place we need!
We go in and are given a friendly "welcome!" greeting by the bartender, who takes our order and pours VERY generous drinks for $4 each... I had a Beefeater G&T and my girl had a Stoli & cranberry. Â
Bartender was showing off her cleavage too. Â Bonus!
We stayed through the changing of the Bartenders, and the evening guy came in. Â He was also very friendly and knew enough about the local area to recommend some good local dinner in walking distance.
Very clean inside, not too dark, fun jukebox, darts, and lots of seating.
Had a nice conversation with the patron at our end of the bar too. Perfect dive bar discovery experience!
VERY cool place. Very friendly. Very clean. I can't find anything to not like about the place. The beer is cheap and when I stopped there on a Saturday afternoon waiting for some tires to be put on my car, they pulled a roast pork off the BBQ in the parking lot and let me know I could help myself. I've been in about three of four times and it's been great every time. While the 'updating' goes on unabated at the other end of First St, I hope that Polomoni's can hang onto the woodgrain panels, lava rock and formica for another 50 years.
Review Source:Pretty good neighborhood bar at the quiet end of  First Street in Livermore  There is never much going on here, just a couple of small TVs, no pool. They do, however, have an above average jukebox with lots of classic rock.
As a previous reviiewer mentioned, Polomoni's main distinction is its funky retro-looking interior. Its not intentionally trying to be old school, it just hasn't been updated for fifty years. The rock wall and vertical wood paneling remind me of my dad's rec room remodel circa 1965.
Update: 6/27/08. I just discovered Polomoni's is a great place to go for (Baileys and) coffee in the mornings. They open at 6:00 a.m., 365 days a year. They haven't missed a day for the last 20 years. Every morning, there's a few people in there drinking coffee, sometimes including Livermore cops, which I initially thought was strange, but I now think is kind of cool.
Also, the bartenders, espcially Cass, run an amazingly tight ship. Check out how clean and organized it is behind the bar.
I love this kind of place. It's a bit different to your average bar. If you stayed for long enough, you'd get to know everyone in the place (that's not many people). Barmaid is pretty cool. Don't know about the rock decor. With the front and back doors open you expect a tumbleweed to roll through. Funky for the fifties - come here and step back in time.
