I stopped by for a drink and ended up staying the whole night. I had a blast and bought some books for future reading. That's a bonus.

The whole structure was once a custom house. I found the blueprints scatted about the building to be quite educational. The barkeeps kept me entertained all night. When you're from out of town, it's very comforting to have friendly bartenders. I'm sure they were glad someone wasn't crying in their beer. The kicker was the topics weren't typical small talk. We talked of authors and travel. It made a favorable impression on me.

I ordered the Turkey & Cranberry Chutney sandwich. It was quite enjoyable. So much so, that I still remember it over a month and a half ago. The chutney gave it a SweeTart flavor while the cheddar and turkey worked in their own way. It came highly recommended, and I'm glad I chose it.

I'm just a little bummed out something like this isn't available in my area.

    Interesting collection of discounted books
    ..... Real books, not e books !!!
Decent snacks and drinks. Free wifi, but limited plug in locations. A nice literary crowd
Forget lousy Starbucks food and overpriced mediocre coffee

    This is the place!!!

Happened upon this spot while wandering around town looking for breakfast. Turns out that the owners used to have the Bookmill in Western Massachusetts, bringing back fond memories of college trips there. Anyways...Portsmouth Book and Bar is a real find. I had a lovely breakfast of yogurt, granola and fruit. My friends were equally impressed with their orders. Not living in the area, it's a bummer that I cannot return for happy hour as the offerings looked splendid. No comment on the book selection or prices as I didn't have time to wander through the aisles - guess it leaves something to discover on my next visit!

Don't look for recent releases here its no borders. Great little spot for used books, coffee and tea or a nice lunch ... Beer too. Reasonably priced books. Warm and well lit place to relax.

This place is really fantastic - you will not find a better selection of books at a better price anywhere. I am really partial to the art/photo books, and they get a great variety of both. Also, as a bit of a "beer snob", I gotta say that these guys are doing it right! If you like carefully selected, mostly regional craft brews, you need to check this place out. In addition, the almost fanatical attention to detail makes this place unique and special. No trip to Portsmouth is complete without a stop at Book & Bar!

Went to meet some friends on a Saturday afternoon. It wasn't that crowded, which I liked. The girl at the register was super helpful when I was trying to pick out a beer and let me sample one before buying, which is always appreciated.

However, we got a few food items, and pretty much all of them were sub-par. The only good thing was the Spanish almonds. The turkey sandwich had a cranberry sauce, that my companion likened to ketchup, and the polenta was cold and too light and had absolutely no flavor. We spent about $30 on food and wish we had eaten elsewhere.

Went in one afternoon for the first time and trying to figure where we could sit, when a person told us "you are in the way". Not excuse me then we turned to leave after that she came back by saying your still in the way. I have never in life been treated like this by an employee so rude we could not believe. She went to the back room I asked who that was the counter person said that was the head chef, I asked if she was always this rude! Then the woman heard me talking and came out. I asked if we did something wrong she still argued never even offered an apology. I would never recommend this dump to anyone!

Three of us went for lunch today.  Everybody was happy & full, and we all wished it was less expensive.  The food was slow to come out but it was worth the wait.  The beers were good and even though the selection seemed to be picked by someone who's more into hops than I am, I found one that I liked.  I don't think it will become a regular lunch spot for us because at $18 it's expensive for a salad and a beer, but it was a really good salad and beer.  The small amount of service we needed was quick and friendly and the place was clean.  I liked my first meal at the Portsmouth Book & Bar and I will gladly go back, but not too frequently.

A crunchy crowd. Cool to drink in a bookstore, even if the pickings are sparse. Wish they'd leave the screaming babies home this time of night. (9:30pm) Not quite my crowd, and I really wanted to love the place, too, but it tries to be both a used bookstore and a bar. Sadly, it doesn't excel at either.

As are many brilliant ideas, the Book & Bar concept is simple. I now have an excuse to buy books every time I feel like a cup of tea or a beer with a friend. Plus, their book selection is excellent and the prices are remarkably reasonable. Also, they did a great job modernizing while retaining the details of the historic space. I'm hooked.

In my dreams there's a bar that's unlike any bar I've been to before - where I have the choice between a great craft beer (no Budweiser need apply) and a great cup of coffee, where I can relax in a cozy atmosphere away from the typical bar crowd, where I can thumb through any number of books or chat with a friend, where parents can enrich their kids with some time at the bookstore (win) and enrich themselves with some time with a pint (win win).

And now that place exists, and my only complaint is that it's not in Somerville/Cambridge!

Greatest place ever. You can thumb through great books while eating amazing food with a beer. The acoustics are perfect for socializing, unlike most bars. Best espresso this side of Milan. The space is so bright and fresh - perfect for fending off winter. I can't wait for the outdoor terrace to open in the spring. The book titles are excellent and current. It is a "used" bookstore in name only.

Look at my photo of the charcuterie plate- duck rilletes and Serrano ham. There was also some herby warm biscuit that came with an assortment of bread and crackers.

It is kind of a good thing I live nowhere near here.  I would spend way too much time here- all my time. They have everything I need and no TV above the bar- amen. No TV anywhere.

Awesome concept. Warm interior. Great coffee, beer and food. The perfect place to relax by yourself or with friends. A beer and a good book? Don't mind if I do!

Perfect addition to Portsmouth!  It feels like it has always been here.  Terrific bargain books new and old (not the place to look for the most recent NYT bestseller--leave that to RIverRun), but great deals on art and photo, cooking and all other subjects.  Nice bar and tables where you can enjoy coffees and creative small plates along with beer and wine.  Gorgeous location with huge windows.
