Went to The Press Room on a Saturday night around 10 to catch the Mike Dillon Band. Good show, semi-crowded but still able to get some seats up front. There were some people dancing, a lot were sitting or standing. I think it was 10 dollars or less for each of us to get in, so all in all very much worth our time and money.
Review Source:The Press Room is pretty great. Â I have a particular fondness for places that are capable of selling craft beer without being dicks. Â Normally, I bolt for the door when a bar advertises live music, but it's kind of fun to watch awkward dads sit around bashfully noodling on mountain dulcimers and mandolins they bought after their retirement and there's a nice community feel to it. Â Traditional sessions tend to attract a particularly obnoxious breed of snobby musicians on occasion, but none of that going on here. Â Also, the jazz combo is pretty competent.
Review Source:We stopped by here on the way back to Boston. Read some reviews and it sounded like a family friendly and popular local place to eat at so we thought we would try it. There aren't a lot of big tables to sit at for a family of 5 (3 kids) but we went  early for dinner and it was still fairly empty. The big and nice surprise was the pizza that we ordered for the kids. Thin but crispy and the sauce was very tasty. Definitely a place I would go back to just for the pizza.
Our table ordered the fish taco which was quite abundant for one person. Good crunch and flavor, fresh fish, served with some type of slaw. We also ordered the nachos grande which had good chips but overall was OK, we've had better. I ordered the Fried Oyster Po'boy. The  oyster was done perfectly with good batter and crunch but the bun was a bit too thick so it made it difficult to eat. I just ended up eating it without the bun. My husband ordered the hangar steak which was cooked to his request but the flavor of the beef itself did not seem to be too fresh. Or maybe it was the quality of the beef which I can understand it's not a high end place but I would expect it to taste decent. Overall, I would come back and would recommend it for a casual dinner or lunch. And don't forget to order the pizza!
Service was good and the live jazz music was very nice. A little confusing when you first walk in, because there is no host, signs, directions, etc. It's a very laid back environment. Sit where you want. Upstairs opens at 9pm. The French fries and sweet potato fries were cold when they got to the table, but it's not a deal breaker. I don't like sauerkraut and the ruebenator was fantastic. The grilled cheese with pesto was great! If you like spice, get the fish tacos. And I mean SPICE! It was so hot, I couldn't eat it, which is not warned anywhere of the intensity of the spice. Try asking for the mayo on the side, because the fish tacos were fantastic! The nachos had a cheese that really made them taste unbelievable. The chips were very tasty. In my opinion, I would have liked more fresh veggies, but that is merely my desire, because the nachos were good!
Review Source:Love the two floors. Â Full bar on both levels, easy to get to. Â Friendly service and great prices. Â I have never eaten here, so I cannot comment on their food. Â I will make that a priority, and update when I can. Â The bands they select to play are always awesome, from Irish bands to cover bands to local bands. Â Again, a classic Portsmouth staple. Â Worth the visit every time!
Review Source:yeahhh delicious food, comfortable atmosphere and great cheap drinks!
thats all I am going to say about this place. went here because I was hungry and had a Ruben. Can't go wrong with those. This place did a phenomenal job with the sandwich. it was full of flavor and just complete delicious. not too expensive either.
the beer there is also pretty damn cheap! which is also a big plus.
Its a kind of tiny place but they have a second floor that they play bigger live bands on.
it looks awesome in there and is comfortable.
I'll be back.
I came to visit Portsmouth on Halloween night after the parade and the restaurant/bar was packed. There was no room to walk in front of the bar so I just ordered our beer at the bar corner and simply stood around with my friend talking to locals. The place seem very interesting but a bit cramp since even the dining area seemed small and narrow. There was stairs that led to an upstairs but it might be used for private functions.
Service there was fast and the price of a draft pint was normal around $5. The decor was filled with local paintings and art work throughout the restaurant. It certainly added to the charm of a local Portsmouth restaurant/bar. I will definitely go again the next time I am around the area.
This is a review of the Press Room at lunch. Â If you really want to see the place in its best light, you'll go at night when a band is playing, but our little office felt like going out and we had never been to the Press Room. Â The food was good. Â 4 out of 5 of us were happy with the food and drink. Â The 5th one is hard to please, so this was really good. Â The service was quick and efficient. Â The atmosphere was that of an empty bar. Â It looked like a fun place, but hardly anyone was in there. Â It seemed clean.
While we were there, some musicians came in and started playing some bluegrass up front. Â I was waiting to hear a medley of Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt tunes, ending with the theme song to The Beverly Hillbillies. Â It was good stuff and it wasn't loud enough to take over. Â I'll go back for sure.
This is the quintessential locals pub. Food is very good. Run by a man who loves what he does. Beer is also good. Live music. I knew I was someplace special when I saw the back of the menu. It was the music lineup. Music every night, but the jaw-dropper was that they had a DIFFERENT ACT almost every night. Wow. Hip kids go to RiRa's or to the saloon/sports bar and please and leave this wonderful place to those who like good beer, food, and company.
Review Source:One of the best places in Portsmouth. I am glad it's still around.
I do miss the old dark wooden booths. If they still had them, I would have given them 5 stars.
This is a locals joint with great music choices every night.
The food is good bar/pub food with a good value to portion ratio.
The PBR here is cheap ($2) and solidly carbonated on tap. Â The downstairs space is heady, but the upstairs is a jazzy shitzone. Â Sometimes it can be the funspace up there, but only if the crazies are out in their slick, fancy sweatshirts and jazzpants. Â In general, I stick to downstairs and get shitty. Â Once I made out with some chick in the alleyway between this place and Daniel Street Tavern. Â That was sick.
Do you ever think about how fucking rad it is to take a girl to a bar when you both have the intention of getting tippy-tip and being gross later? Â The Press Room lets you get into that nitro space. Â I'm vividly picturing some perfectly-assed babe that will ask me to grab her soft areas at the bar tomorrow night.
I've hesitated to write this review, but I'm not sure why. Â
I love the Press Room. Â Its where I usually go if I need to grab a beer while waiting for pizza, or am out doing errands, or am out period. Â
As a music stage it is legendary.
As a pub, its one of the  truly authentic public houses I've found (up there with some of the greats, like the Brendan Behan in JP.
The food? Â Its good! Â I'm even pleased to be one of the impetuses for the pizza on the menu (we once referred to it lovingly as ghetto pie...order this and you'll be a favorite). Its pizza made on a tortilla shell. Â Really quite good!
Play some darts if you dare. Â But I'll warn you, if I'm there, you'll lose :)
Press Room is 5 stars, without no doubts.
Great food, atmosphere, drinks, music upstairs, the back area of the first floor could not be better for gathering to make merry. Â
It's on Old James Magazine's must-visit list for your post-Kittery outlet shopping booze and food jones.
Portsmouth has gotten more cosmopolitan in the past 10 years or so, but the Press Room has remained unchanged and will always be in style. Â Timeless real-deal publick house.
I love this place. Â Downstairs are tables & chairs in the restaurant area with a bar, and in the back of the room you'll find locals playing traditional Irish music late Friday afternoons and into the early evening with a family-friendly atmosphere. Â Upstairs after 9PM, the bar area has cozy tables & booths and live music happens on stage. Â Known far and wide as a blues and jazz haven, the room has great acoustics and regulars that make for a diverse and enjoyable crowd.
You'll find me onstage there several times a year with the 2120 South Michigan Avenue blues band, and I'll tell you now it's one of my all time favorite venues for performing. Â Good food, great service, and awesome music - what more can you ask for?
