The atmosphere is cool, if not a little odd. Â Heard the building was once the city morgue. Â Bartender told of some creepy ghost encounters which was entertaining. Â The cheese plate was good...5 varieties. Â Wish they would have left off the mozzarella though...too bland. Â And to the waitress...it's Manchega not Parmesan. Â Ordered the roasted beet and goat cheese salad and the Mussels. Â Mussels were good but a little overcooked. Â Beets on the other hand were undercooked. Â I love beets but not al dente! Â Would probably return for a drink but would definitely go somewhere else for dinner.
Review Source:Cool atmosphere and all. Â I'd call the food imaginative but lacking in flavor for how unhealthy it is. Â A bit overpriced and I've had waitstaff either not check on us or cop an attitude the few times I've been there. Â I've even sat at the bar here and struggled to get another drink with my meal.
Review Source:This was such a good dinner! Â Their white rabbit drink is one of the yummiest I've ever had. Â We had the sausage appetizer and it was wonderful! Â The steak, meatloaf, and sides were excellent, and the moon pie for dessert was outstanding. Â Our server was delightful and I really liked the ambiance.
Review Source:I heard about the rabbit hole long before I moved out here, from my husband who swore this was the best establishment in the springs. Once moving down here I went a few times for drinks and absolutely loved the staff and atmosphere, but was too scared to try any of the food (I am one of those people that ONLY eat the standard burgers chicken and hot dogs) Last night I had the meatloaf from the rabbit hole and literally could not believe how amazing it was. Because of this experience it deserves an all around 5 starts for a great location, atmosphere, staff, wine and drink selection, and mouthwatering food! *I'm hooked*
Review Source:Not only is the food impeccable (preparation, presentation, aroma, and flavor), the service is always incredible. My absolute favorite place in town. The escargot and shrimp appetizer was so good I almost ordered another, and the carrot cake with sweet potato cream cheese frosting is utterly divine. Fine dining in a classy place in jeans and a tee shirt. Enjoy!
Review Source:Pretty cool place. Â It was packed and had a good variety of menu items. Â
The Mojo Chicken Chicharron Lettuce Wraps were good.
My friend had the fried Chicken and Waffle Roulade. Â Looked more like dessert though, as it had ice cream and chocolate on the fried chicken! Â She wasn't too impressed, but the ice cream was good.
Couldn't get myself to eat rabbit, even though I had been trying the more "exotic" fare while in Colorado. Â I opted to have the ribeye to be more normal on our last day. Â It was a good steak.
Meh. Was not impressed at all. I really wanted to love this place because it's so unique and cute. The food, drinks, and waitstaff all underwhelmed. I kept thinking the food can't be this bad, maybe the next thing will be better...but it didn't. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is great which is why I gave it two stars.
Review Source:Straight to the Point: Amazing style and location but completely lacks follow through with their food and drinks.
Details: I must mentioned we had one of the worst waitresses I have ever had in my life (which actually says a lot) so my review will be a little bitter because of this.
However, I am a trained critic and do my best to keep these kinds of emotions out of my critique.
The waitress immediately made us feel rushed and I asked her for her opinion on drinks. Â I took her best recommendation (apple brandy with "fresh" apple juice). Â No way in hell was the apple juice fresh and I hadn't had a drink all day and I swear to you the bar tender must of missed out on the alcohol because I tasted and felt nothing. Â Since I was on a road trip, I had to double check I wasn't in Utah (Utah has extremely ridiculous alcohol rules and you are best not even drinking in public bars or restaurants.) Â But rest assured, we were in Colorado Springs. Â I've been a bar tender, and to be honest I have made mistakes. Â So I forgave them and ordered an old fashion, which is very hard to mess up. Â It came out with the cherries below a huge layer of crushed ices . . . . . . Â Doesn't one want to eat the cherries in one's drink?? Â And who the **** puts crushed ice in an old fashion!!!!! Â
The food arrives! Â I ordered bacon wrapped rabbit meatloaf and my lady orders the truffled cauliflower mac n cheese. Â Immediately, I was unimpressed by the portions. Â I was given way to much meat and my lady's dish was very small. Â I tried one of the two carrots on the dish and they were basically raw! Â Maybe steamed for 3 seconds. Â Raw carrots with cooked meat????!! Â I couldn't taste if it was actually rabbit since there was way too much bacon (I don't think I have ever said that before). Â All I could taste was wonderful salty pig, but nothing else. Â I didn't order bacon, I ordered a rabbit meatloaf, something elegant and rarely seen. Â To be honest, I doubt it was rabbit and believe they used the bacon to cover up the fact that their menu does NOT reflect their food.
The waitress never asked us how our food was, how our drinks were, never gave us eye contact, never let us know about the actually amazing specials they had and made us feel like we were wasting her time. Â She stopped by for our initial order, then we had to flag her down to get the rest, and took a long time to give us our check, which she dropped off at the table without saying anything.
It''s so sad because the art and the decor really are something special. Â Even the menu is beautifully written, BUT THERE IS NO FOLLOW THROUGH. Â What you read it NOT what you get. Â
I will never go here again. Â If I would of had energy (i did not since I was coming back to Colorado from New Mexico) I would have very calmly explained to the manager all of the latter. Â Pitty on this place.
Was visiting Colorado Springs for the weekend and heard great things about the Rabbit Hole. Â Based upon my research, I thought the Rabbit Hole would a great place to celebrate a special occasion. Â I was extremely impressed. Â Right from the start, the staff fully embraced our celebration and went out of their way to make it a very special evening. Â From the hostess, to the waitress to the bartender, everybody contributed to the fun and was great. Â By the way, if you have a party of 4-6, I would strongly recommend that you reserve the back corner table. Â It is tucked into a back alcove and provides a little added privacy for special occasions. Â
The cocktail list is fun and inventive. Â There are also several excellent dessert cocktails that are a wonderful way to end a fun evening. Â However, the delightful surprise for this hidden gem was the outstanding dinner cuisine. Â I was impressed from the beginning with the mussels. Â However, the lamb, shrimp and grits ( a real surprise for Colorado!), and fillet with truffle sweet potatoes (a real treat) were absolutely delicious. Also, the full menu is available late into the night. Â A super place to stop by for a fantastic late dinner. Â
As outstanding as the food was, I can't speak highly enough about the customer service. Â The Rabbit Hole is an excellent restaurant with wonderful food that you will truly enjoy and the staff works very hard to create an atmosphere that is very difficult to leave.
My wife and I love this place. From the Queen of the Hearts to the Champagne Cocktail and all the interesting food choices...it never disappoints. Perfect on a Sunday evening for a relaxing dinner or just a couple of drinks. Also, as many others have stated, a great place to go late and still get a full menu. One recent addition, the Whiskey Maple Bacon Ice Cream...I think it's even better than the Chocolate Bacon, but I'm more than willing to go back to make sure!
Review Source:So we decided to head to The Rabbit Hole to enjoy the half-off happy hour special. Â We enjoyed a few glasses of Penfold's, a couple glasses of Scotch and a cheese plate. We were cut off without warning and our server and the manager on duty could only offer the explanation of "You have spent over ninety dollars." We were not invited to stay nor encouraged to eat anything. It just felt like they wanted us to go. Â We have come here many times before, but we have never been subjected to such sub-par treatment. If one plans to enjoy themselves here, prepare to suffer the scrutiny of the accountants behind the bar!
EDIT AFTER MANAGER/OWNER'S RESPONSE: Joseph, I appreciate that we can use this forum to resolve what could not be resolved while we were still at your restaurant. Â For the record, I am the man that was at the table. I was not argumentative with our server, I simply asked why we were being asked to leave. Â As for the manner in which we were served, you just told me that 16 drinks between two people is more than enough. I agree. Â I might even agree that we were OVER-served by your staff. Â I understand that you needed to restrict service to us to protect your business. Â But in our case, it was too little, too late. Â
When I studied Culinary Arts, part of my training was being certified in the ServSafe Alcohol program. Â It helps managers, bartenders, and servers understand how to safely and responsibly serve alcohol to their guests. Â I might still have my book around here if you want to borrow it. Â There is some great advice in there! Â A few highlights are:
Serve water to your guests - Your server was providing us with water to drink the entire time we were there. Â Our glasses were never empty.
Serve food to slow the rate of drinking - While we enjoyed the cheese plate at the beginning of our visit (The wine cheese was outstanding, as always), our server served us alcohol seven more times (by your own count) without suggesting we ate something a little more substantial. Â
The "Green, Yellow, Red" System - Servers should be able to assess the level of intoxication of their guests and be able to assign them with one of the above colors. Â
Green means the guest is not exhibiting any signs of intoxication (flush face, glassy/bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, poor motor function, etc.). Â
Yellow is assigned to guests that have exhibited some signs of intoxication and should be closely monitored, offered food, and perhaps slowed on their service of alcohol. Â
Red, as you may have guessed, is assigned to guests that are too intoxicated to continue enjoying alcohol. Â It is possible they have been over-served or that they have a reaction with alcohol and medication, or they are just lightweights. Â
It is also the server's responsibility to keep their manager apprised of any guests in the yellow or red zones. Â This allows the manager to work with their staff and guests to ensure responsible service and above all, customer satisfaction. Â
From a guest's prospective, getting cut off can be embarrassing, frustrating, and can cause hurt feelings. Â Couple that with intoxication and lowered inhibitions and the guest could become angry or loud. Â We were neither. Â We understood why we were refused additional alcohol service, but the manner in which we were told was confusing. Â While we bear some responsibility for the number of drinks we had, it takes two to tango. Â We never saw you (I assume the manager we spoke with was you) until after our server cut us off and we asked to speak with a manager. Â A quiet conversation between me and you about you wanting us to enjoy ourselves while not becoming too sloshed would have been a nice approach that my wife and I would have appreciated. Â We may have even ordered dinner as we were enjoying our time there. Â Instead, we were told service was being suspended because we had "already spent over ninety dollars". Â Nothing was offered from the kitchen to keep us around a little longer. We were rather unceremoniously shown the door. Â At no point in our conversation did you offer us water (that doesn't make sense anyway, we still had water at our table), nor did you offer to call a cab. Â You can't re-write history by posting to Yelp.
We are almost always 20% tippers. Â Due to the way we were dumped at the end of our visit, we certainly did not tip 20%. Â I feel bad for our server because up until that time, she was friendly, attentive, and helpful. Â Telling a guest that they have spent too much money (words you echoed) is a terrible way to get your point across. Â A little more diplomacy would have gone a long way and ensured a 20% tip. Â
In short, while we may have chosen to drink a little too much, responsible service is a two-way street. Â Courtesy and respect for your guests should be exercised at every opportunity. Â You failed at this during what may be our last visit to a restaurant we used to enjoy.
One of my favorite places for drinks in all of Colorado Springs. This place is a trip--you're definitely going through the looking glass when you walk downstairs here. The door upstairs looks like a bus stop so you've probably driven past it a hundred times and not even known that it was a restaurant. Did you know this place was the County Morgue decades ago? It's got an almost indescribably creepy/cool vibe. It's very nice inside and they have a great wine selection and lots of strange food choices (Rabbit, Rattlesnake, Duck, etc). Give it a shot!
Review Source:I only give one 5 star review per city and this is it. Go-to place for Colorado Springs. Interesting meals. Â AWESOME hours (till like 2am sometimes). Â And very reasonable pricing. Clever Colorado beer selection. Â I hope to see this place up and running each time I swing by the springs.
Review Source:Holy Innovation Bat Man! Â Delicious food, amazing cocktails, and very very very unique location! Â Definitely an experience unlike any other in the springs. Â The only thing keeping it from being a 5 is honestly the service, it wasn't bad, just nothing that wowed me. Â It could be me though, but I always feel very forgettable when I am there, for the life of me I can't even think of any of the servers names, the bartenders however, are always spot on.
Review Source:Like the other reviews the atmosphere is quite amazing. The artwork is beautiful and well done. The food however was a little plain. Fine dining appearance and portion size, but I found the flavors to be lacking. It was just a bit bland. I got the seafood pasta and my husband got the rack of lamb. Not terrible but not the best
Review Source:By far the coolest place to eat in Colorado Springs. Â The ambience there just makes you feel so welcome and glad you are there. Â It's excellent for a romantic evening out for two...or more. Â The menu is really trendy and the chef does an outstanding job making sure you're never disappointed. Â The martini selection is long and creative. Â Do yourself a favor and take the red lit staircase.
Review Source:Not worth the price at all!! The food here is terrible as I've tried it twice now. Chicken wings tasted like they were dipped in rancid "buffalo" sauce or whatever it was. Rabbit meatloaf was like eating a seasoned linen napkin. Chicarrón lettuce wraps were boring and the chicken was dry and lacked flavor. The atmosphere is pretty and comfortable and the servers/bartenders are nice. The only reason for 2 stars. Definitely not worth the money in any way.
Review Source:Yep, I like it.
First off, the ambiance is pretty darn cool. Â I saw about four tables where I wanted to sit. Â It's a cool underground space that, as we learned, used to be the city morgue. Â You wouldn't recognize it as such now, but just knowing gives it a cooler vibe. Â "What do you think's in the burger?"
We started with the vegetable pate. Â It was surprisingly good. Â I highly recommend it if you want a starter. Â It's made with white beans, red peppers, and something else and comes with some homemade crackers and vegetables.
I ordered the blackened striped bass and it was awesome.  Most notably, the risotto had huge pieces of broccoli not just little wisps of broccoli residue.  It was very good.  Wife got some seafood pasta which she enjoyed and my son got the butternut squash ravioli which he also enjoyed.  It was essentially covered in  mixed vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, mushrooms, and rhubarb.  The veggies were great and the ravioli was too.  My only complaint about the food, was it was a touch salty for my taste, but I'm notorious for not putting salt in anything when I cook which Wife hates.
We also had the German chocolate cake which was good, but not amazing. Â Next time, we'll try the chocolate covered bacon.
Now, to the drinks. Â Oh, the drinks. Â This place has such potential if they made a real dynamite cocktail, but they don't. Â We tried several and weren't disappointed, but also were far from impressed. Â Next time, we will stick with wine or beer. Â Unless they develop some real cocktails, I recommend you do the same.
Bottom line is you should go and experience Rabbit Hole. Â It's got a great vibe and a lot of really good things going for it.
Okay on first appearance this place is Awsome. Â From the entrance to the cozy corners it has an uptown charm in downtown colorado springs.
I really wanted to like this place, solely on the space, and menu descriptions.
It has alot of potential.... But
We sat at the bar, the wine prices are quite reasonable, with a very low mark up. The food was just all right. A little more salt would have rounded out the two items we tried.
They did take the slider special off our tab as that out of the three we had, two were dry and inedible. Â
The staff behind the bar, made a few comments towards us, in regards to a "smell" but we had to tell them that the heady sent they were enjoying was not us, but rather the gentleman next to us with his herbaceous sent.
Will i go back? Maybe? Was it Cool for Downtown Colorado Springs? Yes!
Went back for round two -- still two stars guys!
I really want to like this place, because it is a great set up, and has a great late-night feel to it.
The waitstaff are not foodies, so don't ask for their recommendations. I was talked out of a corn chowder as a starter by my waiter, and was told their green chili was amazing -- it was mediocre at best (should have just gone down the street to King chef's for truly "amazing" green chili.)
I ordered something I seldom do at restaurants, and that is a hamburger, since I have heard people rave about the burgers at this place. I would say it was decent, but I don't come to Rabbit Hole for a burger -- for that I would pop into Conway's Red Top. My dining partner had the sea bass that was pretty bland.
Service is not very attentive, having to flag down server several times for simple requests.
Tried this place twice now, doubt there will be a third return visit.
Had my Birthday early evening here. Â We ordered five different Appetizers of duck wings, fried ravioli, Colorado mushrooms, veggie pate', pork belly and the house Shiraz. They brought me a slice of German chocolate cake with a candle.
Everything, was amazing. Â Had a fabulous time and love this place.
The Rabbit Hole is COOL!!
The Springs really needed this place. While all the old dog  Restauranteurs are doing the same old thing and wondering why the crowd has disappeared, The Rabbit Hole is nothing short of progressive.
Happy Hour is great  and I think the entire menu is super affordable. The atmosphere is chill and they have some of the best known bartenders in town.
I usually only have drinks however the two times I've had dinner it has been exceptional.
Nice to see a restaurant raising the bar in this town.
Tonight I visited the Rabbit Hole based on a great review from the Colorado Gazette. Â I truly hope this isn't an indication of the other restaurants on that list!
The Rabbit Hole has two things going for it-- great atmosphere, and pretty good service. Â These aspects alone were the only thing that kept me from giving the Hole 1 star.
The food was pretty terrible. Â My boyfriend ordered a beer, which was lukewarm at best. Â The waitress replaced it with an icy glass, but the next beer he ordered also suffered from improper temperature.
The Butter Bibb lettuce salad was uninspired, and the leaves were starting to turn brown. Â The butternut squash ravioli was ensconced in an over-fried wonton-like skin, and served with a too-thin hoisin sauce on the side. Â We sprung for a bread with our dinner (which is not complementary), and it was dry and tasteless. Â We ended up wiping up salad dressing and hoisin to try and impart a little moisture. Â
Our dinner, however, was the real disappointment. Â I had the goat cheese-stuffed chicken, which, aside from the goat cheese, lacked any flavor at all. Â The mashed potatoes and bechamel sauce were legit, but the asparagus served with the meal was the diameter of a quarter, and overcooked to compensate for its toughness. Â My boyfriend had the buffalo ribs which were...well, they were just bad. Â They were tough, dry, and not tasty.
If this food had been fabulous, it would have been expensive for what it was. Â But given the freshness and quality, it was just terribly overpriced. Â It was nearly $80 for two people. Â I wish I would have skipped the meal and saved my money for the pizza we stopped and bought on the way home.
I first visited this establishment with the Leadership NOW! group, here in the Springs. Â We had just finished one of our bi-weekly meetings and wanted to find a nice place to gather, enjoy drinks, and snack on appetizers. Â We first stopped by a local sports bar, however the evening found this establishment busy, so we moved along and around the corner until we fell into The Rabbit Hole. Â What a splendid, charming restaurant and bar. Â I enjoyed the "library" room - what a wonderful idea for decor! Â After visiting once I made it back again with some other friends - they all enjoyed as well.
Here are some tips...I would consider this an "above thirty" aged bar. Â Its more of a professional crowd - quiet, relaxed, enjoying conversation. Â However, very chic! Â
The prices are a bit on the high side, but the menu is unique and the food is great!
And what a wonderful selection of drinks! Â :-)
I have been back for a third time with my boyfriend and boss...they also enjoyed it. Â I'll be back sometime soon!
Mostly inspired but with a few odd choices.
Ambience: Terrific. One of the best places to go for a quiet, intimate dinner for 2 or a small group.
Food: I'd agree with Sibby here - sometimes it seems like they are trying a little too hard. But some are very good. I liked the fish and risotto, as well as the lamb. meanwhile the beef filet was ordinary (the idea of sweet potato with truffle was a good one but ruined by using truffle oil not actual truffles). The rabbit stew was good (and cheap too) but the butternut squash ravioli was over-sauced with too much hoisin. The wine list had some nice items.
Price: About right.
I'm hoping that given a little time they will work out a few of the kinks and not try so hard. I will be going back and will update when I do.
I consider my self very particular when it comes to great tasting food. As Colorado Springs is not New York or Seattle sometimes great food and atmosphere is hard to find. Â Well this time to my surprise I was truly transported to a different place that made me feel like I was in the big city.
The Rabbit Hole is unlike any restaurant in the Springs, period.  To the mysterious trek underground, the perfectly lit bar, the curious book shelves...let's say my curiosity was peeked.  Though they have the most creative menu this side of the Rockies, I decided to go more conservative and order the filet cherry Demi-glacé with truffled potatoes. A modest price of $20 I wasn't expecting much.  PEOPLE... Best steak I have ever had.  To the presentation to the last bite- I was captivated by the taste.
This little nook, called the Rabbit Hole won my heart. Â From the bar tender, the owner and the chef I was greeted as a friend and treated like a prince. Â You won't go wrong trying this one! Â I'll be back for sure.
I've been to this spot many times in the past when it was the Metropolitan - another A-OK place. I read a review in the CS Indy about The Rabbit Hole and the menu sounded intriguing to say the least. I'm a Jew and a vegetarian to boot, it's hard to justify chocolate covered bacon, but I gave it a whirl (The Rabbit Hole, not the bacon).
The space is as beautiful as ever and the menu sounded delicious. I settled on the butternut squash ravioli which I must say was delicious but had way too much ginger for my taste. Too many flavors competing, I suppose. I've been back a few times since but only for the apple-carrot cake with sweet potato icing...this is quite yummy. I'm giving it three stars. Based on ambiance alone it gets 4 easy but for the money - the food wasn't bowling me over. It's good just not fantabulous!
Although this place has a very cool setting and atmosphere and an initially pretty interesting menu, it failed to seal the deal, leaving me with a pretty significant case of culinary blue-balls.
The menu has a bunch of very interesting appetizers and entrees, many of which I had not really seen the like of before - like the rabbit meatloaf. They were, unsurprisingly based on the venue they were being served in, a little pricey - but I wasn't picking half smoked cigarettes and half empty bottles of MD 20/20 from a dumpster moments before, so it wasn't too daunting; especially considering some of the entrees looked very good.
Unfortunately, they failed to wow. I don't want to make it seem like it was total trash, it wasn't ; it just wasn't very good and never was really able to get past the "meh" boundary for me. Based on the prices, it probably should have crossed that threshold.
It is, however, a newer place. I'd like to come back when they switch up the menu and see how they've grown or what they've added.
Note that aside from the food menu, there is a pretty great cocktail list, a lot of which are very good. The place really lends itself more to a night of cocktail drinking, and I would certainly recommend dropping in at night for a few drinks -it seems that this place is a much better bar than restaurant
I'm going to give this place another shot a few months down the road - I think it deserves it.
