A welcome addition to our burger joints here in S.M. Â The atmosphere is great, outside seating with pool, ping pong and horse shoes. Â The service can be a little slow but it gives you time to just relax. Â They allow dogs outside which is a huge plus! Â The burgers are delish and served on a sweet bun with a choice of regular or oh so yummy, sweet potato fries. Â Prices compare to fast food joints with much better quality and did I mention sitting outside with your dog? Â Anyway, check it out!
Review Source:I'm the type of reviewer that likes to leave positive remarks, but today I could not bring myself to do that. Â I will say that at a prior experience at the Railyard I had a yummy hickory burger. Today, I was greeted by someone that could have cared less that we were there and in fact it felt like we were a burden. Â I get my cup of water that had something nasty and crusty right at the top on the inside of my glass, it was clearly not clean...I didn't even bother sending it back, because it felt like the waitress would have just been annoyed. I ordered the tortilla soup (which I thought was chicken tortilla, more like chicken broth with a rogue piece of beef) and a side salad, which tasted good, but it was served on this metal plate and it kept falling off the edges so I was constantly picking pieces of my salad off of the presumably just as unclean table as the cup. Â The only reason I was inclined at all to give two stars was because everyone has bad days. Â But I doubt if I return.
Review Source:I've been here once before and it was decent, that is the only reason it is getting two stars. Â The food is not bad. Â It's mostly appetizers, sandwiches and burgers, but it's nothing outstanding, either. Â
The reason I'm giving this place such a negative review is the service. Â It is TERRIBLE. Â The bartenders forgot drinks with my orders, but they got all of my tip because at least they listened to me. Â I asked the waitress at our table if I could order my food through the bar, since I already had a tab open. Â She said it would be fine, got my order, confirmed it, and I waited. Â And waited. Â And waited. Â Finally, an hour and a half later, I asked if food had been ordered on my tab, the bartender replied "no." Â I ordered my sandwich, finally got it, only to have the waitress ignore me the rest of the night. Â I ended up ordering all my stuff up at the bar, but when I asked for an itemized receipt to make sure I was not overcharged, they forgot that too.
I will not be going back.
I found this place on yelp when i was in San Marcus on a school event and i figured i would give it a try,I ate a hickory burger and tasted fantastic!! Â The onion rings were really good and the fried pickles were awesome my kids loved them..Emily my waitress was friendly and kept on top of things..I will eat here again when im in the area..Great Job!!
Review Source:San Marcos sure has changed since I graduated from Texas State. Â I was surprised by how much things have changed, and how many new establishments there were. Â We were driving through here on our way to Austin, and thanks to yelp came across this place. Â The place wasn't overly crowded, and we were served quickly. Â The fried pickles were very tasty, and the fried corn was something different. Â The parmesan fries and veggie sandwich were very tasty too. Â The drink prices weren't bad, and they had a decent selection of beers too. Â Overall, I wish it had been there when I went to school for I would have been a regular.
Review Source:We very much enjoyed our experience here! Son was graduating from Tx State and our group of 6 went here for lunch. Service was boffo! Food, sensational! Ambiance, perfect for what we were in the mood for! I had a Mandarin Steak Salad that was delicious! We also ordered guacamole, chips and salsa which were very good. Played ping pong. Had fun and had happy tummies!
Review Source:This place is somewhat hidden in the corner of town, but well worth the stop. I went in there after reading a review on here and was not disappointed with their burger! Just order any burger, you really can't go wrong. There is plenty of entertainment to host you and your friends, from horseshoes to a personal media room they have available for rent.
Review Source:It's nice that San Marcos is getting a few more restaurants, this one is ok. As a bar, it looks ok and there's quite a bit of parking. What is nice is the outside area with the ping pong tables and a few other things. Inside is a nice stage so I imagine they have live music from time to time. I got the burger (that's kind of my milestone for a place) and it was above average. There are reviews here that say the wait can be a while for food, for me it was average or maybe a little longer. I guess when I go to a place that is really a bar and has food, I don't mind waiting a bit longer, especially since sitting outside is quite pleasant. We'll be back...
Review Source:Good food. Good service. Came on an easy Saturday afternoon and the place was not very crowded so I cant speak to what the service is like when it is really hopping. Red and blue burger was superduper with some sort of sweet gourmet bun and right on fries. Many good beers on tap but the frosted uber thick glass made it just that much better on an oppressively hot day. Place seems pretty brand new so of course it appears super clean but it did get  a lot of light and looks pretty set up for  all kinds of Patio dining and games outside when the weather improves. Think if I lived here I would come for the pub-grub, get my drink on, and play some table tennis out back while listening to whoever they have planned for that stage in the corner of the yard.
Review Source:I've had better is the first thing that comes to mind. Â Food was pretty average bar fare. Nothing we had was a standout in either a good way or bad way. Â It was a nice place to cool off after a long hot day and catch some of the Olympics.
Service was almost non-existent. It was obvious our food had set a while before being served and getting drink refills was on request only.
Know what it is going in, and you won't be disappointed. Just be prepared to hang out for a while while the process works at its own pace.
Two words....BOMB TIME! As an 80's guy wanting to get some grub after flowing down the river with some compadres, I had a decent hunger coming on. So we Yelp'd(duh) this place up. It wasn't hard to find and the aesthetics of the place seem SO legit. I winded up just getting some appetizer tacos, now I'm not a fan of Cilantro and Pineapple, it's just weird to me but the Tacos were grand...I highly recommend them. I also got a Shiner draft to go with it and the tap seem to taste fine(watch out for flies getting in your beer, it happened to me but they replaced the beer). If you and your buds need to compete for any reason there's Horseshoes outside...THATS RIGHT...anyways it was a good tiiiiiime.
Review Source:Yum! We stopped here to eat between my nephew's baseball games. It was perfect relief from the heat! The restaurant is cool, clean, and airy. Nice setup of televisions and a great looking outside space though it was way too hot to even check that out closely!
Food was delicious - we had a couple different kinds of burgers at our table and they were big hits. Someone had the street tacos and said they were excellent. I had the special which was the bar-b-que sliders. They were really good - bread was just a little sweet, perfect amount of sauce, onions...yum! The presentation of the special was a little off - it looked like two smears of BBQ sauce on the side of the plate.
Only complaint is cost - my plate literally had two sliders each with a few slices of onion and one sliced pickle and nothing else for $8. The meat wasn't overflowing from the buns, no onion rings as garnish, no shredded lettuce...just seemed steep especially for the special!
Other than that, I'd definitely return when in town!
After a long day in training at Texas State and a trip to the gym, I headed over to this place to completely undo my hard workout.
First impression was apprehensive- I pulled up and there was hardly a soul around and only a couple of cars in the parking lot, right at dinner time.
Walked in and the impression got more positive- there are three or four distinct eating areas, including tables and chairs, bar seating, nicer covered outdoor tables and chairs, and picnic tables with benches under some umbrellas. It's also worth noting that they had a pool table inside (with a lively game going on) and a stage outside (which I was informed hosted live music on weekend nights).
As I sat down and was helped by a young hispanic guy, I settled in and looked at the menu. I'd come prepared and had already pulled it up on their website (how else do you think I pushed through my hour at the gym?), but wanted to see if anything else grabbed me. Though it all sounded good, I wasn't that hungry so I went with what I'd originally planned: the black and bleu burger with parmesan fries. As I waited for my food, the atmosphere in the restaurant was casual and fun, and a few more couples came in for dinner. Throughout the course of my meal, my waiter, Hector, kept relatively out of sight but always popped up right around the time my water glass got empty- which is a huge thing for me! He had perfect timing.
Now for the food review. Remember how I said I wasn't that hungry? Yeah, well, I ate every single scrap of food on my plate and left with a belly ready to burst. The burger is a medium-well black angus patty with melted bleu cheese and carmelized onions (go ahead and wipe up your drool now, it gets better), with roma tomatoes, a special mayo sauce, and a lettuce leaf on a giant, soft, sweet bun. Oh, and the fries? I asked for parmesan fries, though it was a tough call between those and the sweet potato fries. They did not disappoint at all- the fries were light and crisp with just the perfect amount of salt and some herb sprinkled on them and a generous sprinkle of fresh parmesan melted on top. The whole plate was devoured in record time, and I'm pretty sure I licked my fingers afterward, too. I was very satisfied with my meal- and it was priced well, too!
San Marcos is quite a drive for me, and there honestly isn't much in this town for  me to come back for, but I'm already seriously considering a drive out here so I can introduce my boyfriend to this place- and to try out the Veggie Stack, too!
Thanks to Carl F. who sent me a much appreciated message with a list of dog friendly places to eat in San Marcos we ended up here! Â I frequently kayak in San Marcos with my dog so I am sending out a big virtual hug to Carl for turning me on to the Railyard!
We arrived to a large outdoor seating area with picnic tables and  high tops built from tree trunks plus horseshoes, washers and ping pong tables! Wowsers!
We also arrived during Happy Hour on a Saturday! 3-7 Happy Hour Everyday including $1 off appetizers!
I started with an above average frozen Margarita and my friend had a beer and the dog's water bowls were filled while we decided on food.
We decided to share several dishes and everything was Woohoo! or maybe it was the heat + Marg + company on an awesome patio with our dogs snoring under the table. Me thinks not cause...
Fried Corn on the Cob and Fried Wickles! served with a cucumber slaw and spicy Ranch dressing!
We also shared a Chicken Quesadilla and House made Guacamole off the $1 off Appetizer menu. The quesadilla was prettily presented and included grilled red bell peppers, onions, mushrooms and less than I would prefer cheese but the crisp filled tortillas were a perfect compliment to the House made Guac and fresh Tomatillo Salsa.
Already looking forward to our next visit!
I will start off and give this place a 4star for atmosphere and quality of food.
The reasons that they will recieve 2 stars for everything else I will discuss.
Having 25 years in the restaurant world as GM/manager for private and corporate restaurants, I have a good grasp on how things work. I know that all restaurants have the same issues, its how you deal with them that makes the difference.
This was a Sunday afternoon, we were a party of four... Ordered 4 burgers.
Patio was fairly busy, inside only had 3 tables.
There were 3 Servers, 1 Â Bartender, and 2 Manager/Owners
1. We waited 30 mins after sitting to get order taken. Another 45 for food to show up.
2. Entire expereince with server was below par... She had no real concern about the quality of her service/guest experience.
3. Bartender had two bar patrons, and did very little to help other servers. She sat at end of bar rolling guest silverware touching her face and everything else without signs of washing her hands.
4. Both male manager/owners did not touch tables to check on guests expereince, but did help run food for servers off and on... However were more interested in playing touchy feely grab ass with female employee's at end of bar in front of guests. (Take it to the back where people arn't going to witness it, and enjoy the eventual lawsuit)
5. One manager/owner sat down at picnic table beyond patio guests and smoked & spit while patrons ate and watched. (Take that out back of the restuarant)
All personal business in the restaurant business belongs out of your customers sight... For example... Smoking, bathrooms, off duty eating, flirting, and so on.
This place has a lot of potential. Great overall idea and concept, but currently has very poor execution!
The food has been nice and tasty every time I've ordered here, including the few times I got it to go. Their happy hour is awesome including every time a train rumbles by (which is pretty often). Their margaritas are tasty and actually contain alcohol not just juice! I've tried the street tacos, burgers and sandwiches and loved them all but they have killer sweet potato fires and onion rings too.
We've had a mix of service sometimes but there are some really attentive waitresses there. It's pretty busy on Friday nights, earlier with families, later with college students. Don't be in a rush when they are busy. The owners are super friendly and I did that they don't mind letting kids run around outside.
Decent burger and onion rings. The wickets should be tried.
We met a friend here based off the reviews on Yelp and had a good time. The decor is pretty cool and this place is set up to have a great nightlife but we only came for lunch. There is inside seating but the outdoor portion is what really makes this place look like fun (well, they have garage doors on the building so technically when you open it up it is all outside).
The wait staff was average an it seemed like it took forever to get refills of water. We all had burgers and they were pretty good, but nothing tremendous. The one cool thing were the fried pickle chips which were tasty (then again, most things fried are tasty). The prices were fair and I would come back. I would really like to see it on a Friday or Saturday night though.
Tucked away on an inconspicuous lot on Edward Gary Street next door to Ted Breihan Electric Company across from the Farmer's Market is a real gem of a place in Railyard Bar and Grill.
I hadn't been to Railyard before this past week. Â For a long time, I didn't even know it existed. Â Then, I wound up here with friends on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for lunch. Â Call it "Hooked On a Feeling". Â A good feeling.
Railyard is a built-from-scratch restaurant, with ample lot and street parking nearby, so, unlike many restaurants in San Marcos which build first and think about parking later, that's not an issue here. Â There are three sections: Â indoor, patio, and blue sky outdoor. Â The indoor section is connected to the outdoor areas by garage doors, and usually kept open-air. Â The patio has overhead fans and radiant heating panels to allow more all-season use. Â The outdoor area features a horseshoe pit, ping-pong, picnic tables, umbrellas, and propane heaters. Â Flat screen TVs are available in all areas, but definitely not obnoxious.
The food is basic pub grub: Â appetizers, soup, salads, burgers, and sandwiches ("Sandys"). Â Wings are available and inexpensive at $4 per dozen. Â Vegetarian choices are limited but available. Â The draw is an emphasis on their fried accompaniments: parmesan fries, sweet potato fries, fried corn on the cob, fried onion rings, and fried "wickles" (pickles). Â A dessert menu and kids menu also add to the total menu package. Â There are daily off-menu specials posted on a colorful chalkboard stand-up sign as you walk in the door.
I've yet to try their full service bar. Â Happy hour is from 3-7 daily, with $1 off mixed drinks and appetizers, and $0.50 off beer. Â There is always a happy hour when the train whistle blows, which, if you know anything about San Marcos, means it's always happy hour.
Service is friendly, prompt and attentive in my experience. Â Drinks are refilled often and to go cups are offered. Â Separate checks are no problem, and frequently offered unless you ask the ticket be combined. Â Standard gratuity doesn't kick in until a party of 8, which is nice, although the service usually merits more than standard gratuity.
I've enjoyed the De-railer burger twice, which is huge and comes with lots of cheese (queso and Jack) and fried jalapenos on a sweet bun. Â I've also tried the Cajun Hammy, which, while it isn't reminiscent of any Cajun food I've ever tasted, is loaded with delicious ham. Â The onion rings are thin and cooked perfectly in my opinion; they are the perfect companion to the enormous burger if you aren't out to gorge. Â The fried wickles are a real treat: Â bread-and-butter sweet pickle slices fried to a golden brown. Â The paremsan fries are also very good, although I'd have to give most of the credit to the fries; the parmesan topping just doesn't add much for me. Â I really recommend the candied walnut fudge pie with house whipped cream; the pie is light, not too fudgy, with plenty of walnuts.
In short, I can't say enough good things about Railyard. Â Their burgers fall just short of my favorite in San Marcos at Chimy's, but, for the same price or less, you get full service instead of self-service. Â I see value in that, as well as a more relaxing atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown square.
I recently attended a party at the Railyard and they couldn't have been more accommodating. Â There were ~15 of us and the service was great. Â All our food & drink came out in a timely manner. Â All the wait staff was friendly and helpful with any questions we had. Â The menu is straightforward with an eclectic sense which was refreshing. Â There are the standards for it is a bar & grill but interesting flavors are put in the mix to make the Railyard not your average bar & grill. Â I had the Red-n-Bleu burger which was very tasty and cooked to my specifications. Â The fried pickles were my side dish. Â THESE FRIED PICKLES ARE GREAT! Â You MUST try them! Â Atmosphere is friendly, inviting and I would definitely go back. Â I highly recommend the Railyard for a party or just a casual outing with friends. Â Even though it was too chilly to be outside the night I was there there is a spacious area to sit and various games to be played (ping pong for example) Â and TV's when the weather accommodates. Â Give Railyard Bar & Grill a try. Â You will not be disappointed.
Review Source:This place was just OK. I like the patio atmosphere and am glad to have a new restaurant in downtown San Marcos. I had a fruit infused tequila margarita which was good but pricey.
Tried the fried pickles, and the red and bleu burger with sweet potato fries. The fries were my favorite part. The burger was disappointing when compared to nearby Tap Room burgers. I'll give this place another try and order something else!
Went there with some buddies this past Thursday, the place had a decent crowd. We all had different types of burgers which were pretty tasty, but the serving of fries was pretty skimpy. Tried the fried wickels which were pretty tasty in small amounts....I mean to say that they were sliced bread and butter pickles which kinda have a sweet taste to them (personally didn't care for it...).
The outdoor patios pretty big and can hold a lot of people. We ended up playing washers right outside. The only bad part about that area of the yard is the lighting. The washer pit have very bad lighting for trying to see the hole in the ground at night.
Overall I would rate the food mediocre nothing great.... the burgers are GOOD don't get me wrong, but there are plenty of other burger places in San Marcos that offer a GOOD bigger burger for same price. Everything is Bigger in Texas or at least Should be!!
Really good fried pickles! Decent menu, general bar food but nothing too spectacular or notable.
Definitely would hope that they improved their menu so San Marcos could have a new good restaurant... The food is mediocre and better at Tap Room.
Decent atmosphere, a little "fratastic" if ya know what I mean. Kinda like Harpers on the Square but with food.
My boss and I headed out to the Railyard today to see what all the fuss was about. Gleaming reviews and word of mouth had reached myself (27) and my boss (62) in like fashion. Having a taste for good food and a curiosity that would definitely kill a cat, I had to check it out.
It was Tuesday around noon when we swung in to a moderately filled restaurant, despite the recent downpour that had just released itself all over the downtown San Marcos area, the place had more customers than I expected.
We sat at the bar and were greeted relatively swiftly. The menu was less than spectacular, a few burgers and random assorted bar foods, I was less than impressed with the depth of the menu. I've heard they have quite a few items that are not on the menu, but I wouldn't know this as no employee told us of them, nor were they displayed. Maybe it's one of those things only for the regulars, but they just opened, so I doubt they even have regulars at this point.
I ordered my standard burger (Bacon Cheeseburger, only ketchup/mayo/onions) I opted for raw onions instead of grilled as they offer red onions (my personal favorite.) My boss ordered the Hickory Cheeseburger. I got fries, he got onion rings. I thought it was a little odd that they only offered american and jack cheeses and didn't carry cheddar. Nothing tops a burger better than a good sharp cheddar, and I was disappointed they didn't carry it.
The food came out relatively quickly. Mine was missing bacon and my bosses was missing cheese. I don't see how you could forget to add bacon to a bacon cheeseburger or cheese to a hickory cheeseburger
but they somehow managed to do this. The barkeep fixed the issue pretty quickly though and we sunk right into our food. The burger was pretty decent. Great roll (which is essential) and a decent sized patty, I was happy with the burger. I would hardly say it's the best I've had, but it was good. The fries were generic bag fries, but they were cooked to a decent temperature, and I enjoyed them just the same. The onion rings were the extremely thin style, almost like onion strings. They had a sharp spice to them, but my boss and I both enjoyed them.
The outside patio area looks like it could be a good time! A few ping pong tables and HD tv's made it appear to be a fun place. It was rainy when we were there so we avoided the outdoor areas. They had a little stage area set up on the inside, but the sound system appeared sub-par as they only had a few small speakers that didn't sound great on the music they were playing at lunch, let alone with live instruments.
Overall I thought this was a decent place, I doubt I would be a regular, but I could see myself coming every once in a while or with friends for drinks when trying to "switch it up" a little. I'll come back when its a little busier one of these nights to get the full vibe, but as of now it gets a solid 3/5!
Order and Red-n-Bleu burger ($8) and enjoy the best burger in San Marcos. It is outstanding. And it comes with your choice of what I'd call premium sides, including onion rings or Railyard's incredible fried pickles.
The Railyard is dog-friendly out on the patio and is a (very) welcome addition to the San Marcos restaurant scene.
And they serve St. Pauli Girl NA, my go-to non-alcoholic brew.
Total Woman had the Veggie Stack ($7) and loved it. Â Niblet liked, though did not love, her spicy shrimp tacos ($7), and I agreed with her that they weren't the least bit spicy. I think she didn't make use of the spicy chipotle mayo.
We'll most definitely be back to give their candied walnut fudge pie with housemade whipped cream ($5).
Service is friendly if not very speedy. (A group of 20 came in when we did so it took a while for the food to show.)
But all in all, I had a five-star experience today, so that's what Railyard gets!
Railyard is one of my favorite places in San Marcos. It's one of the best burgers I've had and the sweet potato fries are also delicious.
Most of the drinks I've had here are also good although the vodka and beer they drink they recommended us I (nor anyone else there) was not a fan of.
Still, this place is cheap, delicious, and big. Definitely a SM staple.
I was in San Marcos for something else (OK, ya got me - shopping) and had a sudden hankering for a good burger, so I turned my trusty Android over to Yelp and came up with a couple options. I picked the Railyard for its handful of great reviews after only having been open a couple weeks.
The Railyard used to be something else - like a tractor store or repair shop or something - so the structure is garage-like, with three Overhead-style garage doors opened up to the outside; gorgeous shiny stained concrete floors, industrial-looking atmosphere.
Parking was plentiful, with additional parking nearby. Service was seat-yourself, written clearly on a big chalkboard sandwich sign outside the door. Seating was four options: outside on the patio, or inside on the dining tables, at the bar itself, or some high bar tables tucked around the edge of the bar area. I was alone so I picked one of those.
Immediately a server came by with a menu and took my drink order; this place has a couple of excellent craft beer choices that I'll try next time. When she returned I ordered the De-Railer burger. She didn't ask how I wanted it cooked, but I don't know if it's one of those legal things about undercooking burgers so they all get done in that medium-well-no-pink-or-juices-ever kind of way.
It comes with a choice of Fries, Fried Wickels (battered, deep fried pickle slices), Half Cob or Onion Rings. I was hemming and hawing about the Wickels when the kitchen manager overheard me and offered a couple samples so I could decide.
There. That's like the one second it took to earn a couple stars. Railyard, congratulate your staff for their attentiveness and service. (Other restaurants, take note.) After sampling, I went with the parmesan fries, because the server told me the pickles were bread-and-butter (sweet) and I am a dill (sour) loyalist. Funny; if they hadn't told me sweet, I wouldn't have known it. If I were the restaurant, I wouldn't tell people unless they asked - because if you're like me, you immediately dismiss them if they're sweet - even if you can't taste it, you just know it.
While I waited I looked around. It was very student-y (I wouldn't go so far as to say hipster-y) but after all I was in Texas State territory. I wasn't the oldest person there by a long shot, but still I felt kind of like a less creepy, female version of Matthew McConaughey's character David Wooderson in Dazed and Confused, where the guy who's been out of high school for years keeps hanging out with students ("That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age"). I have a feeling that if I did hang out during happy-hour times, then the student ratio would creep up and the creepy factor would set in.
The bar looked really good and had plenty of variety. I've read that there are ping-pong tables, but nobody was playing that I saw. Some sports on TV. It was easily 2PM by the time I was there, and lots of tables were filled inside and out; decent noise level - definitely a happening place. And I must say, excellent music choices playing over the P.A.; there's a benefit to being college-oriented. Wish I paid more attention to the songs so I could find them on iTunes.
I made the right choice of burger, I think; the nice and melty cheese made up the moistness for not being able to order a medium rare. The hamburger bun was fantastic - a sweet-ish flavorful roll nicely toasted (and soaking up the melted cheese - yum!), and fried jalapenos was a really nice touch for flavor and juiciness.
The meat itself was only OK, again with the uniform, no pink allowed, that meant not very much in the way of tender or moist. Actually, half of it did seem adequately juicy but by the time I got to the second half it was dry and rubbery. I ended up leaving a quarter of it, but couldn't resist the roll and using it to sop up some of the melted cheese. The parmesan fries were only ok, not as good as I thought since it's such a great concept.
This is a brand new place. The food, already pretty good, will only get better as everyone gets into the swing of things. In the meantime, you just can't beat this service. What a great crew, all the way around. I'll be back and will bring some friends for some of the good beer options - hey, at our age we're pretty good tippers.
The atmosphere of this place for a weekday lunch time was very relaxed and nice. The BF and I enjoyed the open-air feeling of the patio and the restaurant itself.
The service was not too bad, a little slow even though we were the customers aside from the bar area but our server wasn't a bar tender, so I think we were his only table. He also only refilled my date's water when asked-i guess holding two glasses was too much trouble. But he was friendly and offered good menu suggestions. I had the smokin' sandy which I felt was a little dry (so I put some lettuce on it) but had a good flavor. The BF got the veggie stack which boasted a portabella mushroom, but he didn't realize that it was chopped up with the other  ingredients... so it was like a vegetarian sloppy joe. It was pretty tasty though. I definitely recommend getting the fried wickles and ask for chipotle ranch to dip them in. Yum!
I live in Austin, so this place is bit of a hike. However, I made the trip to check this new place out after hearing about it from some friends.
WOW! So worth the trip! I went for opening night and other than the fact that next time I go I'll likely need to get a room for the night, I couldn't find anything at all that I didn't like about this place.
The design is wide open, unpretentious, comfortable, etc.
The prices seemed reasonable to me. A bit more than I usually spend, but the quality was high enough with what I had that I felt it was definitely worth it.
I can't recall the name of the burger I had, but I think it was the priciest one on the menu and it came with some awesome onion rings. They also give you a choice of sweet potato fries, and regular fries... but the parmesan fries sounded really nice. Will likely try those next time.
Their frozen margaritas with a fruit-infused floater have to be the tastiest I've ever had! Dangerously good!
Plenty of room around the ping-pong tables too, but I think the ritas seriously hurt my game that night. ;)
Glad I made the trip and will definitely be back.
A breath of fresh air for San Martians!!!! Just got back from a nice happy hour here a couple of hours ago. The Railyard is a well laid out place with a variety of options drink and menu wise. Their prices on food are pretty affordable, even for college town standards and their drink prices are pretty fair also. Its nice to see a place in San Marcos that carries Stash I.P.A., & at 3 bucks a pop for happy hour that's not too shabby either:) I enjoyed some fried pickles and a pastrami and egg salad sandwich along with the few cocktails. The fried pickles were great, they were a thick sliced bread and butter pickle, deep fried  but not too greasy with a smoky chipotle ranch dipping sauce. It complimented the sweetness of the pickle perfectly! The pastrami & egg salad sandwich sounded a bit odd, but thought I'd give it a shot on the premise of a different offering from the run of the mill burgers and what not that plague san marcos. Is was unexpected surprise ! I will definitely return to the Railyard for food and drinks. It is a prime example of what San Marcos needs!
Review Source:Quite by chance we dined at the RAILYARD BAR and GRILL  on its opening last night  and im  so  glad we did,  we are from kyle and  always looking for new places to eat and the friends we were  with had heard  about his place  ( was,nt sure it it was open yet )  and suggested we try it .
when entering  we where created  by a smiling staff member who welcomed us with  * sit where you like * a appreciated  change from  the usual we have a table  for you and then you are  escorted to a table  close to  other dinners  presumable for the convenience of the servers ,
within  a minute of us selecting a table  (on the patio) a server welcomed us  and asked if she could get us drinks while we browsed  the menu
the place was almost full and it was early but even so the service was exceptionally quick and attentive .
its set up for sports followers having 3 screens and two more to come  for set up outside   with games like  ping pong ,  horse shoes  & washers set up along one side of the  grounds ,a  stage is ideally set on the far wall and i do believe i saw a pool table to the right of the main  door , there is  also a media room for public use at a  * reasonable rent *  this along with a well equipped and plentiful seating bar makes this a ideal dining establishment for all types of age groups  including  those with small  children  .
imagine a sean patricks  WITH CLASS .
the owners wife came over and introduced herself to us a little while  later the owner himself  approached introduced himself and again thanks us  for dining there
the whole atmosphere was casual  and staff very personable .
prices for both drinks and food where reasonable i didnt see any item on the menu  for more than  $10 , the menu is not extensive but  ideal for those who enjoy  a informal night out  .

thoroughly  enjoyable evening  out  we will make this one of our regular venues when we venture  out to san marcos for a night of dining out
My wife and I went for our date night yesterday, which was the first day they were open. We had read about this place while it was being put together, and were anxious to check it out, as it was looking like a really nice facility.
The short review: good food, but still has some bugs to work out.
When we walked in, there was no indication of whether we should seat ourselves or wait for someone to assign us a table. We asked one of the numerous people in the area wearing Railyard T-Shirts, and were told to sit anywhere. We found a table out back, and then waited for quite a while as waitresses tended to people at nearby tables, walking by several times without saying anything to us. I eventually got up and went to the door to the kitchen, where there were a solid half-dozen staff standing around and asked if someone would please take our order. To their credit, they were pretty attentive from there on out, apparently just needing to sort out their assign-waitstaff-to-a-table process.
The outdoor area is as nice as we'd expected from a drive-by we did a month earlier. Horseshoes, washers, and (glory!) ping-pong vie for your attention near a mix of patio and courtyard seating. There are some neat cedar benches, and a fair bit of attention to detail in the outdoor areas. One problem is that the lights are hung low over the horseshoe pit, and we managed to promptly break a bulb. My wife, feeling guilty, told one of the owners who happened to be nearby, and he actually gave her a little bit of a hard time about it -- kind of disappointing, given that it seemed like such an obvious design flaw, and one he admitted he'd thought about.
The indoor area had a bunch of tables, a decent bar, and a nice-looking stage, sadly unoccupied the night we went. Since we were eating outside, we didn't get as good a feel for what the experience was like there, but it looked reasonably pleasant. The management apparently has plans to put in more speakers and TVs outside, which seems like it would actually detract from the feel of the place. Booking live bands is clearly planned as well, which should be a nice addition.
While the printed menus didn't quite match up to what was available from the kitchen (there were actually more choices than were listed), the food was really tasty. My lovely bride enjoyed a burger, and I a chicken sandwich, and we shared chips and salsa; all were quite flavorful. (A good chicken sandwich is surprisingly hard to come by in San Marcos, so this was especially welcome in my book!) There were also a few desserts that sounded outstanding, but we were simply too stuffed to sample.
Another fun touch was that happy hour prices apply whenever a train goes by on the nearby tracks, which happened a couple of times while we were sitting there. (The beer prices seem a little high to begin with to make up for this, apparently.)
Overall, this place has some good promise, and I think will do well. The crowd was surprisingly robust for an opening night, and the addition of live music and the ironing out of their operations will only serve to improve the place. I'm looking forward to seeing what it becomes in another couple months!
