One of the last of a dying breed of supper club style joints left in this neck of the northwoods and one of the handful of places left in Rhinelander where one can receive a high quality meal. Â The food is usually pretty good and the atmosphere is hard to beat: Â sparsely lit, fish mounts on the walls, low ceiling, booths and tables sprawling and good cheer.
Review Source:My family has been visiting that area between Rhinelander and Eagle River for 25 plus years, mainly Sugarcamp Lake area. After several bad experiences with local supper clubs, we visited a proven local restaurant that the residents go to.
Very comfortable setting, prompt seating and attentative waitress staff. They actually know how to make an Old Fashion (pressed) drink. They have daily specials which are limited and go fast which is understandable. I had the 16oz. blackened ribeye that was cooked perfectly, with garlic mashed and cream of mushroom soup that was homemade. Its nice to know that when you plan dinner in the Northwoods, you can always bank on Rhinelander cafe.
I look forward to eating there and hope they go another 82 years..
Located in downtown Rhinelander, the Rhinelander Cafe & Pub impressed me with its quality service and its atmosphere.
Upon entering the Pub, I was welcomed by its warm atmosphere, that is characterized by its wood ornamentation and casual feel...
Pulling up a seat to the bar, I was impressed by their drink/spirit selection and their extensive menu that had everything from lobster and steak to something as simple as a greek salad. Â I opted for their special which was a french dip with provolone cheese, onions, and mushrooms. I wasn't in the mood for steak fries so they allowed me to substitute it with a side salad at no extra charge. Â The meal was filling, tasty, and happily paired with one of their tap beers...
I found their staff extremely accommodating and friendly... Compared to some of the bars nearby, I felt instantly comfortable and "at home" in this pub. Â
I will be returning soon.
What can you say? Rhinelander Pub is celebrating their 100 year anniversary in 2011. Quite the accomplishment.
The food is decent. Unimaginative, but reasonable. The soup was very good, and the rest of the meal (burgers, a steak, and potatoes) was average. This is basic, standard fare. It won't blow your socks off, but it will satisfy your appetite.
The service is pleasant and prompt. The waitress was old enough to be my Grandmother and then some, but this was somehow comforting. It was nice to see an establishment that employs those who want to get out and work.
The decor is something to be seen. Nothing has changed since at least the early 70's. This may sound like a negative, but somehow it works for the Rhinelander Pub. It is old school and dated, but it works for this place because despite that, it is clean, well kept, and although "out of style", somehow feels current and comforting.
Classic Northwoods supper club - it needs to be cast in a film. Total comfort food. Had both breakfast and supper here. This is the real deal - Â not for those who give Applebees 4-5 stars. Â If you're looking for something local and authentic, and need a lot of tasty food on your plate, don't hold out in hopes you'll come across something better in town.
Review Source:My sis, bro in law and I stopped here today for lunch. Â It was hopping! Â Friendly server took our orders in a timely manner and the wait wasn't long considering how busy the place was. Â I had an open faced Reuben with sweet potato fries; both were very good. Â The burger my sister had was huge and she was happy with it as well. Â When visiting downtown Rhinelander, this is a good choice for a meal!
Review Source:Okay, edit. Second night here was one of the best dining experiences of my life. The staff is beyond friendly. The bartender introduced my party to  all the local beverages. This was by far one of the best nights I've had while traveling the country (and I travel a LOT).
Loved the blackened rib eye steak and scalloped potatoes. Bar staff was super friendly (waitress wasn't but it seemed like she was just having a bad night).
The real treat was Larry Jarkowski the Electronic Orchestra! Floppy disks and a smooth jazzy keyboard made this our favorite place to eat in Rhineland!
Also bonus points for the plaid carpet.
An OK place for downtown Rhinelander. Â I had the lamb shank special one night that was very good. Â You should maybe reconsider ordering the lasagna though. Â It is sweet and salty, which I prefer in my candy bars, not my lasagna.
One night a week they have an accordion player. Â The music is LOUD, and he only takes a 5 minute break, so there's little reprieve from the music. Â Its nice to listen to for the first few songs, but then...
The atmosphere is VERY authentic Northwoods Supper Club as described in another review.
I think this is the best Rhinelander Wisconsin has to offer. Â I had the Rib Eye steak and it was very good. Â My wife got her first taste of fried cheese curds and I think she is a fan. Â She also had the Prime Rib and loved it. Â Older decor but clean and very friendly (how could any place in the North Woods of Wisconsin NOT be friendly) Â We had a very good dinner for a very good price. Â I had rated this as three stars but then realized I would gladly eat here again and again.
Review Source:Went here on a trip to the Cranberry festival in Eagle River, a Saturday night. The sign on the door says they have been in business since 1911.
The restaurant is decorated as described here, a cafe in the morning with a coffee counter in front, dark paneling, 1970 decoration, plaid carpet..in short everyting an up north supper club should be. We both had prime rib, Caesar salad, I had green beans, my wife had gorgeous Au Gratin potatoes. The food was spot on for what we had, was served in a timely fashion, tasted great and was not expensive. We didn't have to dress up or sustain blows  from snotty, pretentious staff. The place was packed with nice people and the kitchen put everyting out like clockwork. We got  much more than we expected...
Red glass candle holders, a bar, and choice of potato place the Rhinelander Cafe & Pub firmly in supper club territory (but with the benefit of also being open for breakfast and lunch). Reasonable prices, dark wood paneling, and an ancient waitress added to the charm, and everyone was pleased with their meal. My only gripe is that I ordered my sandwich without Swiss cheese (it had American as well), but ended up getting only Swiss. Wah-wah. The rest of the sandwich was great, so it wasn't worth it to me to send it back to the kitchen and waste it. On your way out, be sure to go around back and take some pictures with the Hodag, Rhinelander's mythical mascot.
