After reading all the "glowing" reviews, I am not sure what people see in this place. While on vacation, we wanted something different so we stopped here. The place was not very busy at all. Tamie took our drink order and then came back and took our food order. I opted for a hamburger and my wife opted for the Chicken and Mushrooms. I am not sure what was going on in the kitchen but it took entirely too long to get our food. The fries were cold. The hamburger was more "filler" than real meat and overcooked. The chicken breast was tiny. The only good thing was the buns seemed a little homemade. Tamie never came back to check on us or give us drink refills.
Sorry Rickster, your food quality is not up to par nor is your service.
Not exactly sure what place all the one-star reviewers are eating at because the new Ricksters is awesome. Almost everything is homemade and delicious. Â I think the fries and tater tots are frozen, but hey, can't win 'em all; the other sides (mashed potatoes, veggies, rolls) are from scratch and awesome. Owner gets his shrimp and a lot of his veggies from locals---you can taste the difference. Our faves are the chicken-fried (I like the chicken, hubby likes the steak), the shrimp po boy, the soup bar, and the fried mushrooms (hand-battered, not frozen). But everything is good. Seriously. We have never had a bad meal here. Â I hear from others that the breakfast is great, too. Congrats to the new owner for turning this place around. Â We've become regulars because of it!
Review Source:My mother loves this place! I haven't been only because I live in a different state! However, when I go visit my mother I will be eating here! The stories she tells me about the chicken fried steak alone is enough is a reason to fly to Texas. It's my favorite! It is in an old building, but who cares? Portland has needed a good resturant for years! Thank Goodness, it now has one!!!
And there is a new bar with flat screens! Perfect!
Old high school friend and his dad bout this place and I heard they had changed the menu. Went there on a recent visit to my hometown and had my sister and her family in tow.
Don't judge a book by its cover folks. The place has had some lipstick put on it but could use a remodel. Inside they have added a nice bar with flat screen tv's and it looks like a great place to watch a game.
I ordered the large chicken fried steak with mash'd taters and grilled veggies and it included a trip to the salad bar.
Salad bar was mediocre and is part of the reason I didn't rank 5 stars. Our meal came in an adequate amount of time and all I can say is WOW! Look at how much food they put on your plate. They don't want you leaving hungry.
I dove into the CFS and oh sweet Jesus!!! Cooked absolutely perfect. Tender, hand breaded, right amount of meat:breading ratio, great flavor. This is one of the better CFS I've ever had! Mash'd taters with gravy were spot on. Great peppery flavor in the gravy with just enough tater chunks to give you something to chew on. Now on to the grilled veggies...I need a moment. ~sigh~ ok.... Mushrooms, onions, zucchini, yellow squash all grilled and seasoned perfectly. I could eat a plate of this stuff by itself. I wanted to rub those zucchini all over my beard and take the aroma home with me.
My sister, a self proclaimed food snob, had the steak salad. She said, "I think I found my new favorite restaurant."
My niece had the Ahi Tuna salad and ate it all...which actually says a lot.
My bro in law had a burger with their self cut sweet tater fries. Yep...it too was ate up.
So Ricksters isn't a fancy place and the building is kind of ugly. BUT, the food was great and how can you not enjoy a small town, friendly conversation with one of the owners, Mr. Dawson. He alone is worth visiting this establishment. Listen to his stories and enjoy his company. He's been in the town longer than most of the buildings have.
Would I go back? Absolutely!
