This place just knocked my socks off. I was just coming for the food and I was impressed on multiple accounts.
Fried mushrooms:perfect, fresh, not greasy, large serving and homade ranch
Ribs and pulled pork (pick 3)
I think I got the Thai pineapple and raspberry. They were fall off the bone and not a bit fatty!
Corn grits side- better than zia's
Green beans side- best cooked green beans I've ever experienced. Couldn't stop talking about Green Beans!
I don't care about all the tv's or amazing selection of beer. Most would come just for that. Seriously y'all. The food is legit.
I really want to like Rookie's. There really isn't another fun sports bar type place in the area, so I had my hopes high.
The first time I went I was not impressed. I gave it another try and they had improved significantly, but there is still room for improvement.
One thing about this place is the amount of television screens. A massive screen sits behind the bar. They claim it is the largest HD screen in the country, but because of its size, the smaller televisions have better resolution. The booths along the sides each have their own screen.
The last trip we ordered cheese fries, a smoked ribeye, a wrap and some kids chicken tenders.
The cheese fries were pretty good and topped by liquid cheese. Add a side of ranch and chow down.
The smoked ribeye had a great smokey taste, but was a tad dry. This could have been due to the smoking process. It comes with a side of au jus and I enjoyed it.
The wrap was well made and tasty.
The kids tenders were overcooked to the point of being burnt. We sent them back (something I rarely do), and they brought back two properly cooked tenders. I appreciated the effort, but the original order came with three. None had been eaten, so I didn't understand why they only brought out two.
Our server was ok, but seemed new, or a little clueless. I will go back to Rookie's because I really want the place to do well. The atmosphere is pretty cool, and the food wasn't bad. Next time I go, I will post an update.
Food Awesome...pulled pork best i have had in years and certainly the best on the Northshore. I have eaten there 3 times now.
Service: just what you expect from teenagers - it is average
TVs there are 24 or 25 i lost count......and 3 that are mega sized
The biggest issue for not rating higher was being lied to on the phone about actually "watching", as i was told, the baseball regionals while speaking to the man on the phone. As a sports cafe you would think that they should know more than the lay person about TV coverage and CST (Cox) having control of the regional market whenever they choose. Especially LSU and the Hornets
- You should Never lie to a die hard sports fan my man.
Despite the ranting negative on another site, I decided to give Rookies a try. It's only five minutes from my work and I was hungry and pressed for time.
I called and placed an order by phone so I wouldn't have to wait. I ordered a half pound burger, medium well, dressed with may, lettuce, tomato, red onion and pickles. Burgers also come with a side order of fries. I placed my order at 11:44 and was told it would be ten minutes or less for it to be ready. I arrived at 11:56 and had to wait a grand total of about one minute until I had my order in hand and was leaving. Perfect timing.
The whole minute that I was in there didn't give me enough time to check out the atmosphere. I did notice that the place wasn't too crowded yet. I supopose that I beat the lunch crowd. I was greeted by two hostesses immediately as I walked in and they told me where I could pick up my order at the bar. The bartender greeted me immediately. I did notice the giant screen tv the advertise. It's right above the bar, hard to miss. TV's were everywhere. I think you would get a sore neck looking at the giant screen while sitting at the bar. Further away wouldn't be so bad.The burger was cooked to medium well. Wasn't as juicy as I expected. Actually, the patty looked a little like a foodservice patty. I don't know if they make their own patties or not. I sort of expected that they would. Either way, it was a good burger. The bun was a sweet mesquite roll which was toasted perfectly and was very delicious. The fries were thick and were perfectly cooked as well. I came back to my office expecting to have to put some Tony's on them, but opened my box to find they had already dusted the fries with Tony's. Not too much and not too little.I would like to give this place another try and actually dine in as well. Â
The menu seems to offer a little bit of everything. Prices range from $4.95 to $20.95. They also offer a family pack that claims to feed a family of eight for $74.95.
Sorry, but I was so hungry that I didn't get a picture of the burger or fries. Maybe I will include a picture or two along with a review after the next time I eat there.
The three star rating is based mostly on the food. I would possibly give it more if I had dined in and had a chance to check out the service staff.
