Great place for a variety of local wines! Extensive selection, not just cabs but also Mouvedre, Sangiovese, Barbera, and some really great Pinor Noir (Mann and Savannah Chanelle. Fantastic service!!! We were given just the right amount of attention and the waiter really was attentive giving us plenty of time to talk and have fun!. We sat outside and it was a wonderful evening people watching and enjoying beautiful Los Gatos weather

Used to live in Los Gatos, this place opened after we left and my boyfriend & I were dying to give it a try. LOVED Enoteca La Storia, but they closed at 10pm tonight so we went here instead.

Bar was full so we grabbed an open table. There were 3 two tops in the place besides us. Our server (the only server) was ready to go home. No smile, no warmth (I'm a server, I know), I get it, but every customer deserves great service.

Ambiance and a good wine selection are not hard to come by, so don't rely on it to overcome bad service. I sat for 5 minutes with an empty wine glass as our server had a personal conversation with the bartender. I had to ask the bar for more bread for our cheese plate (still only 3 tables). Server only bothered to check on us at last call.

Piss poor service. Take your business elsewhere.

A relaxing and pleasant surprise! Sightseeing and shopping on a family trip we paused to enjoy a glass of wine. The staff was cordial and recommended the watermelon beer. Deliciously Interesting. We came back for a light meal a month later on our last trip out. The food and service were exceptional.

An unexpected turn of events got me to check-in at Rootstock for the first time tonight...

I have to say that I was very pleased with the whole experience. Food, wine and service was excellent.  Price was also fair (by Los Gatos standards).... Good wine selection too.  Recommended.

I came here for lunch with my husband.  I had a salad, he had a sandwich, we split a little appetizer, and we had two beers and one glass of wine between us.  I thoroughly enjoyed all of the food and beverage we had.  The service was good, but we were close to the only people in there which made it a little uncomfortable.  Our server seemed really young so I was dubious of her recommendations and knowledge, but it turned out she knew what she was doing.

This place does seem to suffer from that problem common amongst wine bars - which is that the wine is really pricey.  Where you would probably get a 6 oz glass at a restaurant, here (and most other wine bars) you get to choose between a 4 - 5 oz glass for $15 or 2 oz for $8.  Not actual prices--just an example. The pours always seem small at wine bars considering they are actually "bars" and not tasting rooms.  The tastes are always tempting so you can try a few different wines, but having a couple glasses worth of tastes costs a fortune!

I dropped by Rootstock a few weeks ago, and I loved the service. It's wine and beer only, and with a large selection of wine I was unsure what would be the best option. A woman behind the bar was very patient, and allowed me to try a couple sips of different varieties before selecting. My boyfriend also discovered a new favorite beer, 21st Amendment's Hell or High. Watermelon flavored, it's light and made right here in the Bay.

What a fun surprise in Downtown Los Gatos! We just happened on this place after dinner and noticed the outdoor patio was packed with a bustling crowd. Inside there are plenty of tables and seats around the bar. The service is very professional and on point. The menu is pretty big and offers a good amount of affordable wines and the food selection looked promising as well.

Awesome service and wine selection!! I was really surprised by how great their food choices are. I had  the cougar toast beef sandwich and some bubbly, the sandwich came with these amazing homemade potato chips(I'd come back just for those!) I felt that the whole meal including my wine had the perfect balance. Not too light not too heavy. I was so happy after coming here that I almost didnt go back to work. John and Jaime are great bartenders and so personable. Loved it! Five stars!

I love me some Rootstock! What a perfect addition to downtown LG. The outdoor seating is not only social and fun but so comfortable with high top seating and fire pit type seating as well. On a warm day these seats are the best in town. Very fun to grab a glass of vino and people watch or be the ones being watched :) Rootstock has a very nice selection of local wines and wines from all over the world. Happy hour is from 4-6 I want to say and well worth it- $5 glasses of vino and craft beers- leave work a Lil early and enjoy a well deserved drink. Then stay for dinner because their flat breads, cheese plates and apps are all something to write home about. Enjoy this treasure and tip well because the staff here is quite awesome!

My girlfriend and I have been here a couple times and each time has been amazing...
Staff is awesome, they cater to your needs and are very knowledgable about their wines. Super chill people and make you feel right at home.
The place itself is very nice. The chill vibe makes us want to come back again and again.
If you are looking for a great place to converse, drink great wine, and feel at home, this is the place to be...
A must in the South Bay.

Rootstock has a great patio right on Santa Cruz Ave. It has sofas, a patio fire pit, and sleek bar tables. They have a great selection of wines. The wine flights are a great way to sample the menu.  We also enjoyed the cheese plate with the sage cheese, creamy brie, and goat cheese. The service was great as well! All around this is a great place to hang out.

Cute little wine bar on the main street in Los Gatos. Came here after dinner for dessert+ drinks and really liked their bread pudding. The cherry cheesecake was also pretty good. Always see people sitting outside enjoying wine outside on a sunny day.

    The good:
Wine and food options are pretty good. Local wines offered.
Ambience is nice even though tables are close.
    Service is good.

    The bad:
On the expensive side for wines and corkage fee if you buy a bottle there and have it opened.
Sat near the door which doesn't close on its own so we had to close it every time someone came in or left!

We were a little hesitant to try this out having seen the 3.5 star average ...... but decided to go in for at least one drink, and potentially go somewhere else for dinner.

James started off by asking whether they had a bottle of Pliny the Elder.... And they did.... So that was FAB! .. And then I found a nice Barossa Shiraz to start.  We then ordered olives and the 'sampler platter'.  The olives were all what I've come to call Godess olives.... Dark green, lovely!  And the sampler platter had four different culinary delights!  We then decided to stay for dinner.... And ordered 3 salads to share which were all delicious!!!!

The lovely lady who served us was interesting as a person and very helpful.  I moved on to her favourite red .... A Mourvèdre from Poetic Cellars, 2009, Muse Vineyard...... And it was simply STUNNING!!!

...and the music was fun too!!!  Beach boys, songs from Dirty Dancing, Uptown Girl, Billy Joel's best........ Really enjoyed it!

    We'll be back!

Went for happy hour with my wife.  This is a nice little bar.  Weather permitting, the outdoor seating allows you to take in the downtown Los Gatos scene.  Good wine list, including a few Santa Cruz mountain wineries, and a small, but certainly decent beer selection.
On a subsequent stop, we shared a sampler appetizer platter.  The smoked salmon was a definite winner.  The staff is certainly friendly and outside is doggie friendly.

    3.5 stars.

Prices and quality of wines are a touch above San Francisco-caliber. I have been to many wine bars in the city and have been extremely disappointed in their cabernet flights. Rootstock's  cabs were dry, flavorful, and generally much better than what I've experienced in SF.

The drawbacks lye in pricing,  and inconsistant service. The servers seem to cater more to the late-aged wealthy Los Gatos crowd, and downgrade their service for young professionals. Although I absolutely appreciate and enjoy this venue, its simply too expensive. A couple glasses of wine, a beer or two, and a cheese plate, and all the sudden you are $200 deep if not more.

The price point may be a preventative measure to keep ghetto people who want to get fancy out, but for me, a late 20's tech-developer guy, it still makes me hold that receipt up to the light in hopes its not as expensive as it seems.

I really like the ambiance here and the service is really nice. The waitress seems to know her recommendations. Sadly the food selection is not great. Also, the wine flights are really overpriced.

So I am a regular customer. I have brought my 12 year old daughter there for dinner
at least 5-10 times  - she likes the mac and cheese and I like the beverage and sandwiches. Tonight we were asked to leave. It was humiliating and unprofessional. Evidently they have some law about kids are now not allowed in the dining area. I think the actual law is that kids cannot sit at the bar. We tried to sit in the dining area as usual.. The dude claimed that they may have made an exception in the past... ok for the past 5-6 months? wtf?! The waitresses have even suggested specific food for her saying thats what kids eat there when they come in. We have also seen families in there before...soo is this a new thing or ?

Also business tip.. Geee maybe that was an awful deceiving thing to do to a regular customer so maybe offer them some incentive to come back with adults next time?
Was really handled poorly - felt more like being bounced than inconvenienced and them really apologizing and offering something for their screw up would have been a logical business move on their part.

I love that they will allow you to taste before you buy.       The wine selection by the glass is phenomenal.   Food selection is limited but good quality. Don't like sitting on the outdoor furniture covered in dog hair from customers who put their dogs on the furniture.

This new(ish) wine bar is a pretty nice place for a Sunday cocktail. I liked that they open the patio to pets, and their menu was decent. I'd probably come back because of the extensive beer and wine menu without having to go to a sports bar.

A great location and lovely atmosphere.  Wine selection is a little pricey, and food menu was, IMO, a little austere.

I love it here.  I love how laid back and casual this bar is.  The owner is super nice, and easy to work with.  The waitstaff is friendly and quite knowledgeable.  We had a happy hour here, and all our guests joined their club.  It's nice finding a place that mainly pours Santa Cruz wines and have some gems like the Downhill Barbera.  The pickled veggies are too die for.

I see people compare Rootstock to Cin Cin and I think they're both two different type of wine bars.  Both great - but special in their own ways.  This is where you'll find me on a late afternoon with friends and yummy wine :)

Pliny the Elder served here! One of the best beers in the world.

Problem is this is a wine bar, and the wine list was just not up to par unfortunately. Did have a lot of local wines, but nothing that stood out as fantastic.

The service was not great both times I have come here, and one time I had to order drinks myself at the bar.

A little overpriced, and the food was just OK -  Come for multiple rounds of the Pliny and you will be safe.

My bf parents live in this area, we were in town for a wedding as well. What a cute downtown area!!! We stopped in this place for a glass of wine. It had a lovely outside area, dog friendly if you have one, and a small fire pit. It was cute!

I didn't get food but some ppl next to me did, and it looked amazing.

First off AWESOME MUSIC PLAYING-everytime I am there I never want to leave because they keep playing my kind of music...classic rock at a comfortable volume

Service: great! Never without a drink or a snack. I dropped my knife and before I could get off the barstoo to retrieve it l, the server in the back was next to me holding a new one!  Staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and nice.

$ over $50 for lunch: 2 salads and two glasses of wine...a bit over the top. Food was good but....still think that is a bit pricey.

Been there twice and plan on being back real soon.

Good cellar, nice location, and good for a very casual summer day. Service was a challenge. The setup makes it difficult to get the attention of the bar.

The ambiance is challenged by the din of the clientele. The noise level does encourage more drink, since that is the only way some (including myself) can take the edge off.

Poor quality food....compared to Enoteca and Cin-Cin Rootstock is just not worth the time or money.  Only saving point was our waitress who was so sweet and friendly.  She was the only one there serving the house as the other 2 waitresses were not in that day and she did it all with a smile on her face still.

We stuck around for a glass of wine each and a smoked duck flat bread and left right after and went to CinCin.

Their McCarthy 2007 Cabernet was delicious though...we ended up buying a botle at $68...sigh..so much for a cheap Wednesday date night.  =(

Let's face it, for the location and customer base that they are trying to attract, they need work.

I hope they read these reviews and look closely at the service (attitude) and poorly presented food. The service was poor, but that happens to all establishments - get new help.  The food was a joke.  Hint... If you order food that should be warm and its cold, don't take it back and rewarm it in the microwave ... and if you do, remove the toppings that should be presented cold before nuking it!

    Nice wine = +2.

I wish I had taken my money somewhere else.

Was walking around downtown with my girlfriend and we needed a relaxing glass of wine so we stopped in. They had both of our favorites! I don't remember hers but it was $18 a glass (ouch) and they had mine for $12. Both were well chilled, the service was great, the ambience sitting on the seats outside was nice and we had ourselves a great girls day. Much needed!

Beverage selection is outstanding. Crowd is great. It was a lot if fun. I don't know how to rate the wine... Other than they had a large selection of wine and beer.

I felt the service was a little "uppity" for a trendy place and not as nice as I'd hope. I expected slightly better from a place like this... Especially since all the bartenders were doing was serving my group drinks. But the service wasn't terrible... Just slightly below average.

Another newest wine bar in down town Los Gatos and somehow it's still pack at a week night. Offer plenty of local Santa Cruz Moutain Wines here, you can try out from Downhill wine to Kathryn Kennedy and much more. Reasonable, friendly service, especially Stefani, she works at the bar early on week night. We got to chat up about local wines, since I'm just starting drinking local wines since last year. I'm an old school all Bordeaux by heart! So there's always more room to learn more and taste more, right?

    - Arugula salad with prosciutto is good here.

    - Dates wrapped with bacon, if you like sweet, this would be nice with dessert wines.

    - Veggies pickled is nice snack.

    Wines:

    - Downhill Torrontes, nice crisp white wine; perfect for a hot afternoon;
    - Silver Mountain Vineyard Alloy 2005 Red blend, great "Bordeaux" style;
    - Kathryn Kennedy - Sauvignon Blanc, can't go wrong with any wine from this winery.

Reasonable price point, 1 of my regular spots.

The food and wine are excellent. The service needs improvement. My sister (who waits tables at another restaurant) and I agreed that we had no confidence that our waitress understood our order, based mostly on the fact that she seemed to ditz out and not really listen when any of the four of us ordered our food.

It's a place that will continue to improve, and I look forward to coming back in a few months when they have worked a few more of the kinks out.

    I totally love this place.

Let me add a caveat though:  I never really stepped foot inside.  I was way to comfortable outside on the couch enjoying the cooler weather and the portable heaters that took the edge off.  There is also a firepit available.

I have been to a place with the same name in Chicago, but its a totally different vibe there.

The wines are local, which I love.  I enjoyed a great glass of wine and the relaxed atmosphere to socialize in.  Totally great for a date.

Service was decent.  Nothing spectacular, but you know, she could like totally tell you where a good sushi place was.  If like, you know, she could only, like totally, remember the name of the place.

Wine bar that features many local wineries? I'm there. But really, wine? I'm there.

The interior is very sexy and has an organic feel to it. The wines range from basic to high end and I believe flights are available. This is a great place to start or end your night, or you could even make a whole night out of wine tasting.

After catching a movie in Los Gatos, I talked my boyfriend into trying out this new wine bar. He's a big fan of beers and therefore reasonably hesitant to go to a place that was centered around wine.

As soon as we walked in we were greeted by a friendly waitress/hostess and opted to sit at the bar. The bartender was really sweet and helped talk my guy through the wines that would be good for a young palate, and to our surprise she also offered a fantastic beer selection!

We decided to hang around for a little bit and ordered some small bites from their menu, and switched from the bar to one of their tables. The food was amazing and prompt, especially for being as busy as they were, and the service didn't skip a beat.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this place. The people were welcoming and engaging, and the food and drinks are well above par. It's a breath of fresh air for a town that at times can be a bit stuffy.

Liked the local brew and wine but the food menu needs work. Not many choices and things they do have are bla. We ordered the sandwich (was ok) and the flatbread which was an appalling $11 for a toasted tortilla with barely any cheese. Bland and boring.

I would return for drinks but not food. If you are hungry walk a couple blocks to Enoteca.

Finally, a wine bar that caters mostly to local vineyards. With beautiful blue walls, wood cabinetry, music and perfect lighting, this is the perfect spot to catch up with friends, a date or anything in between. The ambience is pretty great.  When you walk in, you'll likely run into someone you know. This wine bar will no doubt draw in a local crowd and those interested in the latest hot spot. Let's face it- wine bars are where it's at.

Glasses start as low as $8 and top off at $17. They serve bottles, carafes and 3 flights of 3.3 oz pours.

For a $10 corkage fee you can enjoy a bottle you purchase from Rootstock's selection.

Of course there is also food and reasonably priced.

This is without question my new spot.

    P.S. they have free wi-fi
