Even though this place is suppose to be just as good as XXX in my opinion the food in here doesn't taste as good as in there. It's good enough and they have some more items on the menu so it's worth a visit to try something different or if you don't want to squeeze in down at XXX on those super busy hours down there.

A little piece of "The Mother Road" in Indiana! We've eaten here a couple of times after returning from an Illinois Route 66 trip and have enjoyed the decor and food.

Good, friendly, quick service.  Have had about half of the breakfast menu so far and the biscuits and gravy along with the Albuquerque omelet are my favorites. Wife loves the biscuits with jam.  One of only a few non-chain restaurants in town and by far my favorite of any breakfast place.

Terrible. Put our name on the list and they started skipping around on the list and skipped over us.

Route 66 (and the same-owner Triple XXX on campus) is a Lafayette/West Lafayette institution, even featured on Food Network.

My wife and I have been to '66 numerous times - usually for lunch/dinner food, but a few times for breakfast as well.

The food's always good.  We usually get burgers, and they've got an interesting assortment, including one with peanut butter on it - which is surprisingly popular.  Of course, you can also just build a burger any way you like in true diner fashion.

Basically, it's old-school "American diner" type stuff; good enough, but not "super awesome."

Personally, I think it would be cool if they advertised "... with locally made D&R Market bacon" instead of "... with OSCAR MAYER bacon."  Local is better than hardcore-mass-produced, every day of the week, in my book.  Ditto if they used local meat, hand-cut potatoes for fries, and so on.

But, they're obviously doing something right to be such an institution in the area.  The food IS good, it's just not "awesome" - and the ingredients used are very industrial/mass-produced.

My friends and I were in town for a wedding over this past weekend and we just happened to fall in to this cute little diner tucked away in a strip mall!  Like most hometown diners, the decor (and clientel) scream "wholesome plain-jane country"...assorted knick-knacks, the required amount of junky memorabilia related to Route 66. This is the type of place  you expect to find exactly what you expect: pancakes all day, hamburgers and fries, nothing particularly "special".

Except for the part where they serve PEANUT BUTTER HAMBURGERS. Yes, you read that right. Peanut butter. On a hamburger.

Now, I confess I am adventurous, but pb on a burger?  Being the macho foodie that I am, I instantly decided we must try it so we could see just how bad this idea was.  We ordered and I proceeded to watch with gleeful horror as the cook pulled out this industrial size can of JIF (one of the sugariest, crappiest peanut butters out there) and adds it to the mix on the grill. We got the burgers (on plain ol' grocery-store sesame buns) and were fully ready to blast the heck out of this joint...when a miracle occurred. Yes, that burger was in fact a miracle. Somewhere along the way, the Jif had turned into pure magic and light, and my meal was now amazing. Holy crap.

So, while on the whole this place remains an average hometown diner - certainly wouldn't drive two hours for it alone - if I am back this way, I will be honored to take on the PBB once more :)

The Route 66 diner is the "G-rated" cousin of it's sister diner, The "Triple XXX" on the campus of beautiful Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. Don't get me wrong. Both Route 66 and Triple XXX are family establishments (not strip clubs) and you will likely have a great experience at either location. The difference is the regular clientele.

The menu at both the Triple XXX and Route 66 are similar if not identical. The lunch/dinner food is fine, but if you're going to either location for the first time, you should be going for breakfast regardless of the time of day.  For mostly sentimental reasons, I highly recommend the Drew Brees Favorite (2 eggs, 1/3 lb. burger, potatoes covered with sausage gravy & 2 grilled buttermilk biscuits W/ jelly).

    Back to the clientele:

As you might imagine, the Triple XXX has a strong following among the local university students, and the atmosphere reflects that. It's fun and at times extremely entertaining if that's what you're looking for, but if Granny is in town to watch her baby girl walk for graduation, you're likely better off taking her to Route 66 for a more family friendly atmosphere.

Let's just say that people don't get arrested for public intox after falling off of their stool and through the plate glass window at Route 66, where this might be a more probable occurrence at Triple XXX.

Again, both establishments are great, just pick your location with the desired experience in mind.
