What's all the fuss over Rudy's??!!?? Â Can somebody help me here?
I guess it's more a solid 2 1/2, but I keep coming back, hoping I'll finally see what the attraction is (at least among the locals/die-hards) here in Springfield...
The brisket is incredibly fatty/gristly, don't order it; chicken and turkey are both better options. A few interesting bbq choices keep things somewhat interesting. Â One, two, or three meat Platters are ok, esp. if you want a taste of what's available. I like the corn souffle side, and you can go for other standard fare, including green beans (limp/salty, taste like can), beans (ehhh, ok), mac and cheese (ok, I guess), suuuper greasy chips, fries, hush puppies, etc... I ordered the side salad (ha!) which was an ENORMOUS plate of iceberg lettuce-- they direct you to the fixins', which when we were there (on a Sat. night) **one** torn up tomato, a ton of red onions, and two scary looking (deli-style) containers of jalapenos and black olives! Â
There are not a lot of stand out dining choices on this stretch of Rt. 72, but I think here's one case where you might just be better off w/ fast food...
Stopped at Rudy's on my way from Columbus to Chicago. I usually eat chicken fingers from Culvers during this drive (yes, I do it often) but, decided to stop and patronize a local spot.
Rudy's is an interesting place. The BBQ is pretty good. The sides that I had were pretty yummy too. So, thumbs up on the food. The place itself is a bit weird, if I'm being honest. The price point is pretty high as others have noted. Therefore I award Rudy 3 Yelp stars.
If you like BBQ and are sick of McTacoKing at each exit, give it a try.
We were on our way back to Chicago from Columbus, OH and saw the sign for Rudy's Smokehouse. Â My husband and I really thought the brisket was delicious! Â We both thought the whole meal was good. The beans and coleslaw were tasty. Â We got our food to go and the service was fast and friendly. Â We will definitely stop there again when we are traveling.
