I've been to Salty's twice, for dinner. Â The first time I ordered chicken and shrimp scampi with broccolini, expecting something light, and got a mediocre fettucine Alfredo that was lukewarm and made me feel immediately guilty, bloated and gross without the "but this is worth it because it tastes so good." Â All the fat, carbs and sodium but disappointing to the palate. Â My boyfriend got fish and chips, and it was soggy and bland. Â Our friend ordered pierogis and she recognized them as the same ones she buys frozen to have at home.
The second time we thought we'd do simple - maybe ordering food that tries to be fancy at Salty's is hoping for too much, other such thoughts. Â I ordered the Roasted Beets, Goats Cheese salad, which is described as " 'Salty's Classic' fresh roasted beets, goats cheese, young arugula, Champagne vinaigrette, crostini & crispy onions." Â I expected a nice bed of arugula with some beets and goat cheese, but I got a pile of lukewarm and soggy diced beets with a tiny bit of goat cheese, 5 or 6 leaves of arugula, and the "crostini" was mediocre garlic bread. Â The crispy onions didn't pair well at all with the other flavors (nor the crostini). Â My boyfriend ordered chicken nachos and the cheese was clearly a mix of shredded bag cheese and canned nacho cheese that was starting to separate. Â They were edible, but nothing to write home about.
I don't think I'll eat at Salty's again - the food is REALLY bad and the prices are fairly high. Â It's disappointing - I want it to be GOOD since it's a homegrown independent little venture with a cool theme, but they need to just throw everything out and start anew if they want to stay successful or attract any new customers. Â Perhaps a better direction would be "stop trying to be innovative and foodie until you are able to make exceptional classics."
I'm fairly certain I'll be able to turn my meal into three - I easily have enough leftovers for two days' worth of lunch.
First, because I am 5 years old on the inside, I was extremely excited to see "Chocolate Mousse Shake" on the menu. Â That's right. Â A whipped chocolate milkshake, topped with whipped cream (if you're not me) and hot fudge sauce. Â YUM. Â I was also pretty excited by the risotto balls - deep fried risotto served with marina sauce. Â Of course, then I discovered that they have risotto specials of the day - today's option had cream sauce, asparagus, crispy onions, spinach, and tomatoes, so I didn't actually wind up getting the appetizer (but I was excited to see it, anyway). Â There are several protein options - pork loin, chicken, shrimp, scallops (and I think a beef option? Â I don't remember). Â Since it's a seafood place, I went with the scallops. Â The portion was huge, and it was really good. Â Parts of it were a little too al dente for my tastes, but I realize that's a personal thing. Â My boyfriend got the Mac 'N Cheese with BBQ chicken, and it was really good. Â The side salad was exactly what I'm looking for in a salad - field greens, tomatoes, onions, carrots, and croutons (I had them leave the olives off), in a good size, and the champagne vinaigrette was so good, I was dipping my bread in it. Â The bread was a little too crusty for me - I like soft bread.
I was intrigued by the plates I was seeing around me - a giant tortilla shell filed with fried clams? Â Maybe? Â i want to try it. Â Also, I was so very torn between what I got and the blue-cheese crusted pork loin with sweet potato fries (and the dessert menu) that, really, I think I have to go back.
Our pepper shaker was missing the top. Â Had I been so inclined, my delicious risotto uptopia would have become a sad mess. Â Luckily, it was well-seasoned, because I didn't notice the lack of top until I was done eating. Â Also, the waitress brought us someone else's check (oops!). Â So, maybe not a five-star experience, but a solid meal with good food.
Just had a wonderful meal. Wife had the Alaskan salmon which was very good. I had the pot roast which was spot on. My parents had gumbo, and stuffed shrimp We had a fried banana cheesecake, and rice pudding for our desserts. Both wonderful! Very nice waitress with some nice suggestions. Quick service for a Saturday night. We're adding it to our regular stops.
Review Source:Bad service, no fresh produce with cherry stained lemon wtf. Her truck wasn't in. Then sudden it was. I hate liars! You never cut the fruit. The waitress was new but not the best. 2 Stars for this trip
Just went again this weekend for Oysters on a Friday night and what a difference! The staff was spot on with everything an no excuses what so ever! Â The oyster were amazing and that's all we really came in for. 4 Stars for this trip.
My wife, my son and I went this mothers day and i have to tell you right from the all most start it was bad. We got reservations so we ate with others as well. Our high chair for our son was broken. I alerted them of this and the hostess expressly asked for another for us that was not broken. When we got it, it too was broken! The staff didn't even check after messing it up the first time and with us calling ahead and letting them know we need a high chair! No one seemed please with our request.
We ordered two appetizers. Mild wings and potatoe skins. They both came out at different times with not enough dip for either one of them and we wanted to share them of course but NEITHER came with any plates. The wings where the worst. You could tell they boiled the chicken, which is one of the worst ways to make them in my opinion. On top of which they had not even a hint of heat but you could still see the butter on it! Very light on taste!
I had to go wash my hands at one point and i had noticed that they didnt even have hot water. This is a sanitation issue that would get some places at least fined!
For the main dish, we where all very upset to find that the menu was really bare so a lot of us had to get the same thing. Those who got fish and chips got them as a huge chuck of fish and fries scattered around but for some weird reason they came in a big taco shell! Over all they did not mind them but they did need more salt to bring out the flavor. I ordered the New England Pot Roast which came out very very dry yet had gravy all around that tasted premade or ready made. It was said to have onions straws on it but it was clear they simply opened a can Frenches onions and LIGHTLY scattered them about. The smash potatoes where very unremarkable as since there was gravy everywhere, it made them runny.
To make that all worse, i of course could not finish my meal as it was just inedible (no one ask me if i liked it or wanted a refund or anything), I had over heard another wait staff mention the specials and an expanded menu! We all felt like they purposely limited us for some strange reason!
Finally, as one party behind us got up, they had to rearrange the seating. A wait staff member then after moving the chairs around herself said we my child was in the way and may get bumped even though they put him in that spot in the first place despite where i wanted to put him. SO my child was in a bad spot BECAUSE OF THEM and yet they still told me that we where in the way.
And this doesn't even go too far into the fact that so many foods where so greasy and the price was way above average. I would not recommend this to anyone and i would certainly NEVER go back there again.
I've been to Salty's a few times and the seafood is decent considering it's landlocked location. Â They have a very large, diverse selection on the menu, so if you're with a larger crowd of people that aren't seafood fans, they will be able to find something else.
The first time I tried the food here, I actually had the turkey dinner with "all the trimmings" (it was around Thanksgiving in 2010) and everything was great. Â Subsequent visits I've tried the raw oysters - pretty good and shucked well. The gumbo is average and the Ahi tuna special was very good. Last night, one of the guys at the table had the (Alaskan) king crab legs. They were already cracked in half which is a bonus for some, but he complained that it dries out the meat when restaurants do that.
The service is a bit slow at times but generally friendly. They do have a good drink selection as well.
I was hankering for some seafood so we decided to check out Salty's. Started out with a lobster bisque and french onion soup. The french onion was good with tons of onions in it, the bisque was pretty good, by far not the best I've had but still enjoyable.
For our entrees my wife had the chicken parm and it was the single largest chicken breast I have ever seen. She liked the chicken and rather than getting it over pasta she substituted it for grilled zucchini which was awesome. I had the Tilapia Mediterranean which had tilapia, shrimp, and scallops over cous cous in a garlic, tomato and artichoke sauce. It was a little underwhelming but good, it would have been better if the dish wasn't drowning in the sauce. It made for some good left-overs.
This place has a pretty decent beer selection.
The service was a little lacking but not terrible. And a little slow to remove empty dishes.
Overall I would go back again.
The decor isn't outstanding, but fine! We were sat by bar on a fri nt, little loud. We weren't attended to for over 5 minutes. While another table sat at same time had their drink orders! After finally getting served, it was fine! We had the garden salads which were good for only $1.99! Fresh warm sourdough bread is given to all. My bf had Yankee pot roast, I, salmon w crab stuffing! The servings were gigantic! I made 2 meals out of mine!
Review Source:this place amuses me. Â the decor is very coastal-touristy, which is more than fine with me. Â I can almost pretend I'm on a Maine vacation!
Plus, a good dang old seafood restaurant... up in this region? Â
i have never had a bad time here. Â i tried it again last night to make sure.
the waitress was friendly, lovely & not too intrusive -- just right.
my pal & I split a plate of pierogis with grilled onions - YUMMO. Â the apps & salads sounded really great -- not your typical middle-American fare, very creative stuff -- but we settled on 2 bowls of lobster bisque.
then of course we were way too stuffed to see what's up with the desserts.
I dig Salty's. Â It's a nice, casual neighborhood pub that happens to serve very decent seafood... & sweet potato fries too! Â That always scores points with me.
Weather's getting colder, I bet I will become semi-reg over there.
Salty's is a solid "A-OK" for me. I've never really had a dish here that has stood out and excited me. It's average, but not in a _bad_ way. The food is good. I've certainly never had a negative experience here because the restaurant staff seems to put forth a very diligent effort to offer reliable, good service.
I would absolutely go to Salty's again, but it wouldn't necessarily be a first pick when I'm in the area and looking for something to eat.
My only complaint about Salty's is actually their website: It sucks and it's kind of ugly. Many restaurants have terrible websites which often try way too hard to LOOK fancy, with Adobe Flash and PDFs all over the place, but lacking in any real level of usefulness. Salty's website is one of these offenders in my opinion. When I click on "About Us," for example, to learn a little about how you describe your restaurant, I don't want to have to download a PDF that turns out to only contain a short paragraph saying that you sell seafood in Clifton Park, followed by a list of your hours in plain 12-point Times New Roman. That's stupid. Why do I need to download a freaking PDF for that? The website doesn't even seem to be finished. Hire a professional web designer to get this site done properly.
I get the idea behind the theme but it could be done a lot better. I almost feel like I'm looking at a MySpace page. You just need some terrible animated GIFs in random locations and a shitty Lil Wayne track looping in the background. Then the MySpaceification of the website will be complete. At least that would be kind of usable on mobile devices. In this age of technology and on-the-go society, it's unfathomable that a business -- especially a restaurant -- would have a website that falls between "cumbersome" and "unusable" for mobile devices.
So...
...Is it messed up it that I spent more time criticizing their website than their food? Seriously though, Salty's is good stuff.
I started going here when one cold night in the dead of winter I had a craving for seafood. Â I had seen many coupons and advertisements in local booklets like the Clipper Magazine, but I had never been there. Â You must be forewarned that the restaurant is in a strip mall, and a pretty empty one at that. Â But inside the decor is varied and, I think, charming - and decidedly nautical kitsch. Â It is much bigger on the inside than it looks, and I've sat in a distinctly different area of the restaurant each time I've been there and had different atmospheres. Â There's more of a tavern-style area near the bar with small tables and booths, and then there's more of an old family restaurant on the other side. Â It can feel a little crowded but never to the point where you couldn't hear your dining partners speak. Â The service is extraordinarily kind and welcoming. Â And the food is always good. Â
I don't eat a lot of seafood and when I do it's very specific kinds of fish, so already the menu is a bit limited for me. Â But I never have trouble finding something to eat... usually the trouble is picking just one entree! Â The food tends to be more on the indulgent side (read: slathered with butter). Â On my last visit no one went home hungry and in fact had to pack some to go home. Â Among our favorites: the fisherman's platter (not for the feint of heart or appetite), the salmon and crabcake special, broiled scallops, jumbo stuffed shrimp, and the Italian stuffed clams appetizer. Â I've never had room for desert but it always sounds good.
It is seafood so you will be spending more than if you had gone to Applebee's, yes, but you'll get a much better quality meal for it.
If you're prone to feeling chilly in air conditioning or in the winter time, you may want to bring a sweater with you. Â It's casual dress and a comfortable atmosphere that isn't as pretentious as other seafood restaurants. Â Four stars because it's very good and very reliable - so good that you wish they didn't use plastic tablecloths.
We went here last winter when we were craving some seafood but didn't want to drive to Colonie for Red Lobster.
The decor and ambiance leave something to be desired. Â I just wish they would update a bit, maybe bring in some more comfortable chairs, some different music, something... even with the new management, the restaurant hasn't changed much.
The food is good. Â I got a seafood sampler and much to my dismay it all tasted the same. Â I know, I know, how much variety is there to be expected from a platter of fried seafood but I was sad at how much the haddock, shrimp, scallop and crab tasted ALIKE. A fish fry is one thing, but I know what each of those taste like and I didn't get a hint of it - at all.
For what we got we felt like we paid far too much. Â However, because it is a local favorite and the food was decent we will probably go back.
Went here becuase I was craving french onion soup and one of my friends said they have a good french onion soup. Â Boy he was right, the only think I could say about it was it was just a little salty but I would definately order it again. Â For dinner I just ordered a grill chicken sandwich which was good. Â As I was reading on here someone else review the service got slower when the restaurant seemed to great busyer, I totally agree with that. Â Over all I like what Salty's has done with the menu since the new owner took over. Â The food is always hot and pentaful.
Review Source:I love that they have a 4 soup sampler, Every soup I have tried there has been great so its tough to decide on one. But the French Onion really stands out as one of my favorites anywhere around. I usually end up getting seafood as an entree, and the portions are always abundant. The mashed potatoes are really good and plentiful as well, so don't be afraid to try them. I always leave stuffed and with leftovers, but i couldn't pass up on fried banana cheescake, and you shouldn't either. delicious. I almost forgot, they have a combination Chicken Parm and Fettucini Alfredo. Brilliant. I wish every Italian restaurant I go to would think of this. And the Alfredo was some of the best I've had. It was a different approach than most places but very rich and cheesy and left me wanting more.
Review Source:I've been here four times since coming back to this area in July. Each time, I've come away impressed. Food quality has been quite high. My father and I have ordered everything but shellfish here, so my ratings are drawn from that experience.
What's keeping this place from being 5 star is a disjointed decor when compared to the menu's samplings. If you're into fishing, you'll dig the remaining decor (which is borderline overdone). If not, you will find it tacky. Risk you take in being unique? Jazz music dominates the house music system, which does not fit the motif of dining room with "picnic table" style table cloths. Just strikes me as odd. Although, what kind of music do you place in this type of setting? Swarthy pirate tales, yar?
OK, the food - good lobster bisque, *very* fresh salad greens (claim to be organic, I believe it). Huge portions. Seriously, come hungry or bring a cooler to take it with you. Pricing is reasonable considering the oversize portions - I'd almost prefer seeing a price drop with a corresponding reduction in serving size.
Quality selection of draft beers - their bottle list is long too, but I don't drink bottled beer when out so I didn't pay much attention to it.
This place is the one of the two default places when my Dad and I don't want to make something at home. And he is *picky*. Definitely worth giving it a chance. If you don't like it, wait a few minutes as the owner/chef does make rounds to the tables asking how you like it.
Salty's is one of the few restaurants in the area where you can find fresh, and reasonably decent seafood. I feel it is expensive for the type of strip mall, bit tacky pub place, with multiple bar TVs with a large overcorwded fish tank, poor miserable fish inside.
With a large menu and tempting selections (and good beer options), it is yet another place where the food is hit or miss depending on what you order. The rare Ahi tuna special with black Asian rice was super, but the New Orleans Special left a a little to be desired. Good, fresh catfish was just a tad underdone, remoulade sauce needs major work (it is tasteless), sweet potato fries could have been a lot more crisp. The fried oysters on this special were terrific, plump and juicey -and not greasy. But the gumbo looked very unappealing and was way salty (Oh, yeah, we're eating at SALTYS)--- but I am too harsh. Desserts make up for ALOT!! Home made Tiramisu packs a big WOW! Easily enough for two people....the best anywhere in the area. YES.
There is also a good carrot cake, rice pudding, bread pudding among other choices. The service is always friendly, (though she forgot to refill our coffee).
Back 9/13/09. Forget the new "Golden Carrot Cake". IT was awful, my husband even politely told our server - but she did not remove it from the bill, even though he only took 3 bites, then pushed it away. He NEVER complains- so I know it was bad. Rock hard, the "golden" does not work. Carrot cake should be deep orange/brown - let's you know there are carrots and spices in there. Yuck - what happened? Makes me think twice about returning. Though I have to say the fish and chips look incredibly appetizing- enough for 2 people easily. I did not care for the raw Louisiana oysters either. Swordfish and salad entree was good except that I made the blunder of mentioning that I like my fish cooked through- I knew as soon as she walked away I would regret it. 'Got a dry overcooked piece. My bad. Arugula salad was delicious, and the oyster po-boy looked good, but hubby had a nasty stomach next 2 days. Oh dear, does everything go downhill all the time?
The place needs an infusion of a lobster tank, less salt (ha) better prices, an outdoor dining area, and for heaven's sake train your staff; Â "The customer is always right". Take the darn cake off the bill if someone complains! As it was,$58.00 for the dinner for two - consisting 2 beers, 1 soup, 3 oysters on the half, Â 2 entrees, one (yuck) dessert, and one 10% off coupon.
One thing they got very truly right- I asked for a chilled glass for my blue moon- and it was frosty-frozen cold. Excellent place for a blue moon! Keeping the 3 stars because I can't take off a half.
Oh man! We were very hungry and stopped at Salty's Pub & Bistro (located in a strip plaza at the corner of Guideboard Rd & Route 236) for a Tuesday evening dinner.
Salty's Pub & Bistro is known for serving up good food at moderate prices. We've usually seen the parking lot full on the weekends. The restaurant has a long bar area and separate casual dining rooms. We were seated in the upper dining room with the hardwood floors and maritime artwork on the walls, sorta like the similar atmosphere with the guy singing on the freecreditreport-com commercial. (Hopefully our waiter is not in that situation) See the food menu at http://www.saltyspub.com
We started out with two Diet Cokes and some Perogies ($6.95-6 potato dumplings skillet fried with caramelized onions, parsley & butter) served with sour cream, which were pretty good! The complementary loaf of bread was served warm.
For dinner, the Fried Fisherman's Platter ($18.95-lightly breaded haddock, clams, jumbo scallops, gulf shrimp, fries, slaw, tartar & cocktail sauce, served in a large fried tortilla shell) was slightly greasy and very filling. The San Francisco Cioppino ($18.90-haddock, jumbo shrimp, jumbo scallops, calamari, clams, & mussels simmered in a tomato broth, topped with onion strings & served over capellini) had great flavors and scallops were very good, but the shrimp were a bit tough & chewy and some of the capellini in the broth was pasty, not a bad dish. For dessert, the hot Apple Walnut Crisp ($4.95) served with vanilla ice cream was a good ending to a very good meal.
The service towards the beginning and middle of the meal was pretty good and attentive since our section wasn't that busy yet. However, the service became delayed as the place began to fill up with more diners arriving. Our waiter became busy serving the new tables and I had my credit card ready when our waiter walked by.
Overall, Salty's offers great tasting food and good portions with the service dependent on the customer volume. We were happily filled up!
