The grocery store is gone (it was apparently not a money making venture) but they are still there - and the food is still good!
The chef did not flip my quesadilla over on the grill though (the crystallization of the cheese really makes it!) so it was a bit of a bummer.
I hope that they make it - still one of my favorite restaurants in town!
Really good fresh tacos! Asada tacos were good, Pollo taco was better a little more flavorful and the el pastor taco was very good and exactly what I was craving! It was deliciously flavored. AND they have horchata!! Very happy about that - I've been to some 'Mexican' restaurants where they didn't even know what that was... then again it was run by white people.
My husband had the pozole - which is offered only on the weekends. He really enjoyed it, it had a lot of meat. Get it only if you're really hungry, it's a lot of food.
Staff there was really nice. They were also making everything FRESH right there. We saw them making fresh guacamole and ensuring all the avocados looked good before adding to the sauce. The store too is very clean and neat - restaurant is in back - check it out!
Oh my how I used to love this place as a teenager. I have fond memories of getting out of school and gathering here with groups of friends. So, naturally I was disappointed when a fire struck and they closed down. After sampling many taquerias in the area I figured it was about time to see if this place was truly as good as I remembered or if my extra curricular activities that I would partake in before eating here had given me rose colored glasses in addition to my blood shot eyes. The bad news? Yes they had for I have now broadened my horizons in Mexican cuisine and have found much better food to be had. Now, the good. The food was good but the variety that the menu used to have is now lacking as they only have items on a billboard. The assembly and ingredients of the burritos has changed and I wasn't as big a fan of the new way as of the old. The tacos also lacked something special as well. They used to have a vertical spit roasting their al pastor with big chunks of pineapple layered in between the thinly sliced meat. Sigh, no longer. Overall, good but not the best.
Review Source:I have to say I loved this place till I realized they reuse the chips and salsa from table to table. If you want more proof just go in there by yourself and see how much salsa they bring you, and then look at the ring around the salsa dish of where it was before you arrived.
Gross!
I wont be eating there again even though their Tortas are really tasty.
Okay, the insanity of the holidays is over, so I can get down to business and catch up on reviews for all the places I've been to in the last few weeks.
We'll start with my trip to visit the in-laws in Amish Country, IN and review... a taqueria?
Surprisingly, Goshen has a really excellent taqueria in the back of a Mexican grocery store in the heart of its downtown.
The place had a fire a few years back and took a particularly long time to reopen and even with that in mind the place looks kinda like it was rushed to be put back together, especially the grocery store part.
But that's of little concern when the food is this good. Â My wife stayed traditional with tacos, I got chicken flautas, everything was flavorful and cooked to perfection. Â The chips and salsa to start the meal were also fantastic, which I always use as my measuring stick for a good Mexican place. Â And the default drink of choice is a nice bottle of Jarritos, so how can you go wrong.
In the Chicago area, where I'm from, good taquerias are pretty common, but in an area where "good" Mexican food is Hacienda or *shudder* Taco Bell, this place is especially notable. Â Plus it's inspired at least more more authentic place to open in town.
Ohhhhhhh tacos tacos tacos.
San Marcos, I missed you. Please never get burned down again.
We were treated to Mexican delights on a Saturday night with my mom and her significant other, and it was as good as I remembered.
The menu is limited (it always was) but the space is a bit brighter and cheerier. No more dingy booths, now it's all tables. There is waitress service and you get chips and warm, VERY spicy salsa roja and a delightful salsa verde. We were also issued a bowl of some freakin' fantastic guacamole, which was complimentary but I'm not sure why. :) We ordered tacos (I got al pastor and steak), flautas, and the man-friend got a burrito that was enormous. You can get rice & beans as a side if you like, though it's not on the wall menu. If there's something you want, just ask -- they probably have it or can make it.
The meat is super-tender, everything is fresh and tasty -- my only small disappointment was the refried beans, which didn't strike me as all that great. But no matter -- we devoured everything else.
Since it was my mom's treat, we didn't pay, but I know the prices are low and the food is some of the best Mexican in town. Which actually is saying something, believe it or not.
P.S. Pro tip: If you don't feel like parallel parking on Main St., there is a lot behind San Marcos and you can go in the back door right to the restaurant area.
San Marcos has delicious Mexican food that is as close to authentic as you can get from a restaurant in Goshen. Â The prices are cheap and the meals are yummy. Â One cool thing about the restaurant is that it is in the rear of the grocery store, so after you eat you can buy great Mexican products to take home and make your own food.
