    Tastiest breakfast in the area!

I go here just about every Sunday morning for breakfast and have gotten to know some of the quirks of the Sawmill. First of all, as a reviewer, I've only ever had their breakfasts so I can't vouch for their lunches or dinners.

First of all - the setting. The Sawmill is in a weird, nay, an almost invisible location in Richfield just off 41/45. Although I've been there plenty of times, I nearly miss the turn almost every time, so heads up! The building inside is very tastefully decorated in a logger style with lots of vintage logging ephemera. Even the waitresses are required to wear a plaid shirt. It's thankfully not overdone - just the right amount to provide a theme/decor to the restaurant.

Now onto my LEAST favorite part of the Sawmill: getting your name in and waiting. Sunday morning/noon is hectic. Due to the position of their register, the hostess area, and the front door, everyone gravitates towards one spot and clogs probably the most critical area of the restaurant. There is a very small waiting area, but I typically wind up standing next to the door because of the crowds trying to both register and pay. Which, in winter/early spring, lets in a gust of frigid air every time someone comes in.  If I could change one thing about the Sawmill, it would be the configuration of this entrance.

Some have complained here about the waitresses. For the most part, they all seem to be older high school students (and all female - seems like the men are all in the kitchen!). We have never had a problem with rude waitresses, but perhaps their lackadaisical attitude is to be expected of their age group. It's not de rigueur, though - for the most part, they're friendly and accommodating.

One random fact for folks with kiddies: every time I've been there, there has been a magician/balloon guy walking around that will treat your kids to a balloon creation.

Now, onto the FOOD! I typically order the Sapling (an ample-sized pancake, egg, and bacon/sausage) breakfast or one of their delicious omelettes which come with potatoes and a large (we're talking CD-size here!) English muffin. If I want a treat, I'll ask for some additions into my pancakes which are offered at an additional 99 cents - apples, chocolate chips, blueberries, etc. I think their pancakes are the best I've ever had - big and fluffy.

Their drinks come in cute mason jars. For anyone looking for alcohol, they have a very cool, full sized bar in an adjoined area and their bloody marys looked amazing!

This place has local character, good food, and they've carved out a niche as the best breakfast joint in the area (as far as I know, there's nothing nearby!). Give them a try, but be prepared for some quirks that come with a small town joint.

the Sawmill Inn is very much a small backwoods cafe, as evidenced by the log cabin style building, country music being played and drinks served in mason jars. A little dim lighting but still bright enough to see the menu. The eggs i had with my chicken fried steak were nothing special, if not a little worse than others. Everything else was phenomenal. Portion size for the money could be a little better.

My wife and I ate there years ago, now I remember why!  It was over priced dreck. They told me my fried chicken dinner was homemade, so I thought yum, I love good fried chicken!  B.S.!!!  This had to have come from a box. I used to sell food to restaurants and we would taste product at trainings, I recognized this flavor right away. Plus it was a small bird, that's a give away every time. Prices are too high for this area and the quality was poor on its best day.
So if your thinking of a trip to Holy Hill and want to stop for something to eat, keep driving.

    Avoid.

The service was the worst part, if that tells you anything.  Sorry, hostess, to put you out that I need to be seated in order to order lunch.  Waitress, sorry you have to talk to me to take my order.  Oh you forgot half of my meal, again my fault you have yet another inconvenience.  I am finished and I know you were too busy to ask how my meal was throughout my dining experience.  Please don't strain yourself to take away my dirty dishes when you bring the check.  Oh good, you didn't.

At this point, do I need to describe the food?  It was fair at best and a couple dollars too high per meal, especially considering where the Sawmill Inn is located.

    Big Let-Down!

First time venturing to the staple restaurant in Richland: Sawmill Inn. I was pleasantly surprised when I pulled up. A full parking lot tells me I've discovered the promised land. I was eager to lick my chops and dive in head first.

You know as a kid when you come down the stairs Christmas morning and see the tree shining brightly and full of beautifully wrapped presents? Deep inside you know everything on your list has got to be under the tree- right? This is how I started.

I walked in to a homey cabin feel that was not over done with tchotchkes. The receptionist was welcoming. A homemade ice cream case was present along with various local vendors like honey makers displaying their wares. Then I was seated.

The waitress came to the table and delivered a welcome that lacked warmth and sincerity. It was a quick "Hi, what can I get you to drink?"  I'm sorry but this girl needed to drink a cup of coffee, get some fresh air, and try it again. A smile would have been a good start.

The food came and my veggie omelette was in a bath of butter that could fill one of those butter pumps at the movies. You know the ones that give a waterfall on a bucket of popcorn. Yuck!

I finished my omelette and you would think 'ill Miss Morning Glory would have at least stopped by to check on our dining experience and refill our water glasses. She was nowhere to be found.

The best part of the meal was the Neuske's bacon. It was incredible. I should have just stuck with a double order and skipped the butter omelette.

At this point the meal is over and Morning Glory has turned to Faded Glory. And.... it's been over 40 minutes.  She's vanished like David Copperfield making the Statue of Liberty disappear.

Finally, the waitress comes. She doesn't ask how my meal was or if she can get me anything else. Probably a good thing because if she did I would have responded that she should consider a career change.  She just laid down the check and "poof!" She was outta there.

Overall, I wasn't impressed. I was let down similar to Christmas morning when Santa failed to deliver one of my toys on my list.

Looks good but fails to provide even a basic dining experience one would expect.

Been here a few times for breakfast and just keeps getting worse! I usually go with a few ladies and its never busy. A few ordered pancakes, you would think the syrup would come out with the food but no and by the time the waitress came back she checked on other tables. There is never silverware at the table so you have to wait for that also. I hate cold eggs and it has been that way every time we go here. The wait staff is totally rude especially when asking for more coffee or soda.
We won't be back we have given you 3 try's and you have failed!

Just got home from the Sawmill Inn. My fried chicken dinner was frozen in the middle. Yes, frozen. They cook and then freeze the chicken before frying it again. The owner was rude and could care less about our food not being cooked. It says a lot about a business when the owner doesn't even care.

Sawmill Inn was a great find after a long day of shopping! My friend and I had no clue where we were so we used yelp to track down a lunch place.  So glad we did!  Sawmill Inn was the perfect spot for a glass of wine (they don't have bubbles) and salads for us.  Tried the mexican/taco salad and we were not disappointed.

Service was quick and friendly.  They serve breakfast all day (bonus!) and the place was hopping on a Sunday around 1pm.  The building is a pretty large cabin-y type place.  Rustic and charming with lots of parking.  I would definitely go back if in the area again.

Great atmosphere! Food is terrific. Bathrooms are clean. Have had breakfast, lunch and dinner, it's all good. Love how they always decorate for holidays. Prices are average for a nice dinning experience. Staff is friendly and attentive. Baked goods for sale too as well as their cool mugs.

Every visit here has been great. Food is always done right, and tastes good too!! Only one time I was unhappy with the corned beef hash and service gladly took it back and didn't charge me. It's a quiet atmosphere no loud music. If your looking for a good breakfast or Sunday brunch meal this is the place.

First time here with my wife and two teenage kids. We all thought food was good, not great. All at my table received their food but me. As they ate i waited till finally our server asked how we were doing.  To which I said im hungry. Food came in less than 10 seconds. And it was good. Would I come again only if i have time to kill. Still waiting for mu pie. Lol

I've driven to Fon du Lac, the Fox Valley, and points North hundreds of times. Never knew this place existed.

Club sandwich was ok.  We were in a rush and didn't try the desserts, which looked really good.

Went here on a Saturday night after it was recommended by a friend and I wish I had gone somewhere else. First the positive the waitress was very good and very attentive so if this review was just about service I would return. Now the problem the food is below average a trip to the local Applebees would have been a better choice because you know exactly what you get and average meal nothing more. The problem with the Sawmill Inn it doesn't even make it to average. I had the prime rib which is the cut I have most often when I go out for steak it was nearly tasteless. Large pieces of fat, Yes prime rib does have fat but it should be trimmed not over an inch thick in some areas. The fat should also be translucent not white if cooked correctly. The veggies were also very salty but the baked potato was cooked fine. I would like to say I would return as it would be a nice place to stop to eat in my area but I will not give it a second look. Because no matter how good the service it can not make up for a below average meal.

Great homemade cornedbeef hash. Service was a bit slow. Had to get up and ask for coffee refills and a different favor of jam. But food was worth it.

Sawmill Inn is located in a rustic cabin. After a morning of shopping, we used Yelp to find a spot to grab a quick late breakfast/lunch. Sawmill Inn was the perfect choice for us. From the moment we walked in, we fell in love with the charming artwork and pictures on the walls. The menu was sizable and we were glad to find out that breakfast is served all day!

We had a sampling of sandwiches, salads, soups, and breakfast meals and all of us were quite satisfied with our choices. We were also intrigued by "George's Steak & Rib Feast" - all-you-can eat ribs and steaks, potatoes, salad, and dessert, plus two pitchers of beer - for 12 people. We didn't attempt it, but might need to come back to check it out.

If you're in the Richfield area, stop by for an all-around solid meal, kind service, and great atmosphere.

This was such a great little place.  We found it on Yelp on our way back to Chicago.  We pulled up and it was a cute little log cabin. It has a huge front porch where you can sit outside and eat.  My sister ordered the Baked Mac and Cheese which was decent but had TONS of rosemary in it which just completely took over the entire taste. She said if it would've just had a touch it would have been great.  I had a burger that was pretty darn good.  The service was pretty good also.  They make some great homemade ice creams here also.  I definitely loved the atmosphere and environment.  Its pretty difficult to find.  If you don't know where it is you would never see it because it is behind a huge bank.  I would for sure recommend this place to friends.

I think the Sawmill is a 'best kept secret' to those of us who live in the area.   I say that it's a 'secret' because it's now somewhat hidden behind a bank so it's not as easy to find if you don't already know where it is.

Even though I could drive just a few more miles down the freeway to quite a selection of chain restaurants like Uno's, Chili's, etc., my wife and I much prefer the Sawmill for it's cozy cabin feel, nice wait staff, and tasty menu items.   There is a full bar with televisions at one one of the restaurant for those that just want to watch a game and have a drink.

My favorite items on the menu are the Crosshaul Cobb Salad and the Sawmill Chicken Ciabatta sandwich.  I've also had several types of quiche that were all excellent and the pistachio ice cream I had there was quite the treat.

On occasion, there is a magician that walks from table to table to entertain the kids.  I'm not sure who he is, but it's a nice perk to an already nice restaurant.

When my wife can't cook, getting take-out from the Sawmill is the next best thing... it's like a home cooked meal without the home!

Very good basic sandwich menu and excellent wait staff.  I particularly enjoyed the Reuben sandwich with their special potato fries.  Fish fry was not very good as the fish seemed like something from Van De Kamps frozen food section at your Piggly Wiggly. A better selection or grade of fish would vastly improve the Friday night experience.

The restaurant has tables and booths to accommodate seating which is roomy.  Conversation levels were good, with minimum noise intrusion from other tables.  Bar area is off to a separate part of the restaurant which helps the noise factor.

We have been back  numerous times and enjoy the laid back casual dinning.

    Loved it!

In fact, I loved it so much, I went back within a week.  The first time, I came on a date and between two dinner entrees which included soup or salad and some delicious sourdough, and a bottle of wine, I think I ended up paying about $42.  The Sawmill's a spectacular value and the food couldn't be better.  It's simple downhome cooking that everyone should be able to appreciate.  So next time you're out west or close to Holy Hill, don't forget this place for breakfast, lunch or dinner.  You won't be disappointed.
