After several hours of riding the back roads i decided to try this place out. Â According to the building it was voted best little cafe in East Texas. Â Who knows where the votes came in from and as far as i know it may have been the only cafe within 50miles. Â Either way I would like to find the source to validate this.
Call me stupid for ordering the reuben sammich at a place like this, because that's what i am. Â You had a typical menu and there like a sore thumb stood out the reuben. Â I thought this was funny, but then again i figured if it was out of place it had to be good right? Â Nope nope nope, i was wrong! Â Corned beef was not thinly sliced, but a whole slab. Â Slight amout of cheese slapped on some soggy dark break. Â The disappointment started to set in. Â I should have went with the typical menu cafe food for a country place as such. Â
Service was good with no complaints and prices were very respectable for what i had. Â Prices would be awesome if the food was. Â This is out there in BFE and i see me going there once or twice a year to ride. Â I will give this place one more shot the next time i am out that way. Â Update to come after.
Beautiful Saturday, arrived at 10:15 with the parking lot half full. Â Food was good but cold, service was fine, but the kitchen was really slow. Â Did I say slow? it was beyond slow and it wasn't real busy in the restaurant. Â We didn't get out of there until close till noon. Â Doubt I'll go back.
Review Source:This place was just as amazing as I hoped for and then some. We stopped her as a recommendation and was not at all disappointed. My son and I both had the chicken fried steak. It was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The crispy crust also stood up to the very tasty country gravy. We had fried okra and mashed potatoes as our two sides which made a great accompaniments. My husband had the catfish. He was very impressed with the size of the filets, especially for the price. I talked him into the onion rings since we didn't get them as an appetizer. They were as tasty as they looked on the menu. Just the right thickness and perfectly seasoned batter. I also had to try the blackberry cobbler as my mom passed away several years ago and no one makes me cobblers anymore. It was not to sugary and had a great consistency. Took me back to my childhood.
I had been hoping to get my husband down here on a motorcycle ride now I think since he has tried the food and felt how the staff treated us like part of the family I don't think the twisting of his arm will be to difficult.
This is a definite come again for us and must try for anyone who has not eaten here.
Way above average place in the middle of nowhere. Â Food is simple, competent and hearty. Â This is good quality, country comfort food.
The only knock is that the kitchen and wait staff seem to get overwhelmed pretty easily. Â Not sure what's going on in that regard, but the quality of the meal offsets the slower than average delivery of service.
We'll go back whenever we are in the area.
Even though this breaks my heart, the food at The Shed has gone downhill. On a recent visit, we were totally disappointed in the food. I ordered my usual chicken fried steak which was hard to chew and not very tasty. My potatoes tasted like they were from a box. My daughter had fried chicken which was good, but she commented on the potatoes being like boxed potatoes, also. The rolls were their saving grace. It makes me so sad, maybe they were having an off day, but the service was horrible and the food not so great. I didn't want anyone to read my previous review from 2010 and be mislead.
Review Source:.my boyfriend and i always take the motorcyles from Dallas to East Texas because we like the nice long roads and less traffic. On one of our many rides we stubbled upon this cafe with a dirt parking lot full of motorcycles and cars and decided to stop. theres not much scenery inside but the food was delicious hot and fresh and the dessert was good too. since then we have been 3 more times and i just love these little town cafes'
Review Source:The Shed is slightly more refined than the typical small town cabin diner, but it still offers all of the hospitality, affordable grub, and nitty gritty atmosphere. It is spacious, it has a shopping area, and it just feels a bit more comfortable overall. Also, the menu is quite varied.
The single biscuit and gravy, at $1.25, may just have been one of the cheapest orders of this Southern staple that I have laid taste buds on. Additionally, the biscuit was borderline one of the largest that I have filled my stomach with. It was not as flaky as I would have liked, but the crustage was awesome. The gravy was spot on, as well.
They also offer 1 hotcake for $1.99. These large, thick puppies boast a nice fluffy texture and a phenomenal starchy, yeasty flavor profile. Well-played, The Shed, well-played.
The hash browns are good; nothing fancy, though. There is an interspersing of crunchy bits. As long as you can bring that to me, I am fairly satisfied with your offering of griddled shredded potatoes.
If you some how find yourself in Edom, TX, while trying to reinact "I Know What You Did Last Summer", going to find the most hole in the wall eateries in Texas, or taking a wrong turn from I-20 (which could lead you to the first option....and who the heck misses a turn on I-20?), then drop on in for a bite to eat. The people with treat you with all the love you deserve as a hungry traveler.
The boyfriend and I drove pretty far out of our way to get back Dallas to go to this place. I have some friends that live in Chandler that have told me about this place and so it has been on my list for sometime.
I had the chicken dumplings and my boyfriend had the chicken fried steak. It was your standard home cooking. Everything was good, there were no standouts or surprises. We also split a piece of buttermilk pie based on another Yelper's suggestion and thought is was good, but not "to DIE for". Given the lack of good restaurants in rural areas, I totally understand the appeal. It is a piece of local charm and totally worth visiting for that reason alone and you will get good food, just maybe not anything that will knock your socks off.
