I have lived in the Gresham and sandy area all my life and I just found out about this place! It is amazing! Great food for such a good price! The $$$ yelp gives is misleading. Everything comes in huge portions so it is totally worth every penny! We went in around lunch time but got breakfast anyways and we split The Logger breakfast which was $18 (I don't know how much or if it extra it costs to split the couple we were with insisted on paying so I never saw the bill) which was such a bargain you have no idea. The meal comes with 3 eggs, hash browns, sausage, thick slice of ham, 4 pieces of bacon, biscuits and gravy, and 2 pancakes. Oh and toast too! After noon they stop making pancakes which was sad but I tell you this, there was still NO lack of food! The eggs and hash came on one plate, all the meat on another, and the biscuits and gravy on another heaping plate. We both pretty much had no breakfast that morning so we were very hungry. My husband has a very good appetite and I have a decent one as well. I tell you though we still had a third left that we couldn't possibly have eaten and we didn't even get the pancakes that it usually comes with! My hubby and I will be going there again and again! We haven't even tried lunch or dinner yet! There portions are huge! The price Is right, and service was great too! The outside seating was great and the place was so clean! This is a must go to place! I highly recommend!

Had breakfast there with six other people.  Not one complaint, waitress was good, food was good, and was quiet enough to talk across the table to each other. Shirley has done a great job with this place, hope many of you who read this and give it a try. Also has a great outdoor patio in the summer.

Last night I had dinner at one of my favorite places in the Gorge. Shirley's Tippey Canoe. As usual it was wonderful. From the hostess to the waiter all went flawlessly.

I decided to have the clam chowder. It was thick and creamy and not held to long in a holding ban marie. The vegetables were still crisp and fresh lending to their claim everything there is made fresh.

I then went into the house salad and added bay shrimp. Nice crisp lettuce and shrimp full of flavor accompanied. The 1000 island dressing was some of the best I have had.

I ended with the appetizer of crab cakes. They were very good but the filling seemed to overtake the crab. I don't know what crab costs these days but they seemed to have cut back from other times I have had them.

Overall a very good experience and Tiffany the waiter took great care of us. BTW...it looks like they are going to have a wonderful Easter buffet today.

Whoa! I've been meaning to visit this place for some time now. I'm always on the lookout for places to eat and get a post-hike beer between the Gorge and Portland. So I finally went.

When my friend and I walked through the door we both gasped. We literally gasped! Ohhh! The interior is stunning and neither of us was prepared for it. You walk through that door and you are transported to some twisted Lynchian Pacific Northwest wonderscape a la Twin Peaks. The interior is all blonde wood--Doug Fir I suspect, and full of odd and wonderful knick-knacks, football team pennants, fishing paraphernalia, and bric-a-brac. The bar figures prominently and glistens with glasses and bottles and taps. The place is huge inside, and it's immaculately, impeccably clean. Shirley runs a tight ship. And in the back, when you step around to use the restroom, you see this massive, magnificent patio, complete with huge marble Fred Flintstone tables, overlooking the river! Holy shit! How did I not come here before? This is one of those strange gems you only occasionally run across in small town America. It's spectacular.

I visited on the Friday before Easter, so the place was decked out with bunnies and pastel eggs galore, adding even more deliciousness to the twistedness. Apparently they're having a big Sunday brunch. In summer apparently there are barbecues on the deck outside.

The place clearly prides itself on its bar. There is a huge drink menu divided into categories to make it navigable: The "Beach" Twisted Teas. Martinis. Billinis and Toddies. Quenchers. Margaritas. Champagne Cocktails. Ohmygod! I don't even know what a Billini is!!! I saw the margaritas. They're huge. They have a decent set of taps as well.

As to the food: I'm loathe to form an opinion on one visit. I had the Ruben, which was recommended by the waiter. It was decent, if a bit on the spendy side. Nothing spectacular (which is why I've not given a full 5 stars). I'll have to try again some time.

    You simply must visit. Really.

I love Shirley's Tippy Canoe!  I had driven by this place numerous times on my way to the falls (on the Historic Highway) and always wondered if it was good.  I finally went there with my BF for breakfast and was not disappointed.  Generous portions (too big, like most places), good service, and down-home decor.  I've also eaten lunch there, and again was not disappointed.

If you happen to be on the way to Multnomah Falls and are on the Historic Highway, drop in and check it out.  But come hungry..... :).

Stopped on the way home from the Oregon Coast.  Well worth the 2 mile drive off I-84.  Right along the Sandy River.   Would be awesome to sit outside in garden type setting on a warmer day.  Food was great, portions were plenty.   A bit pricier than we anticipated- but good food & service- we will go back!   I had halibut & chips, hubby had halibut burger. Clam chowder was really good!   Bloody Mary's looked awesome but too far to drive.

A warning: if you purchased a "groupon" type certificate from Double Take Deals which was advertised in the Clipper Magazine (Dec. 2012 - Jan. 2013, Gresham/Clackamas Edition) be forewarned that you will not get $30.00 worth of food for the cost of $15.00. As you go through the process of purchasing, there is no mention that this restaurant will only allow you to use 1 certificate per table. You don't actually find this out until after you have paid and printed the certificate - it is in the fine print. We thought it was just a fluke, because who in their right mind would purchase a certificate for $15.00 to turn around and get $15.00 subtracted off their bill? I guess Tippy Canoe just wanted me to pay for a portion of my dinner ahead of time on line. Needless to say, they would NOT accept both certificates and repeatedly told us that the owner, Shirley, had signs up in the restaurant for the servers to absolutely not allow more than one. It sounded like the staff was threatened in some manner, because they would not budge, even after they agreed how silly it was to get $15.00 worth of food for $15.00! They said they do this so they can get repeat customers - I'm not sure what kind of customer would come back after realizing they had been taken advantage of though?!?

We went to Tippy Canoe for a birthday celebration. When they brought out the initial bill, the total did not reflect a subtraction yet for either certificate. So in the confusion of trying to reason with the server, Monica, and the manager, Allen -- no amount was subtracted at all! And we gave them one of our certificates, plus 15.00 more dollars for what we thought we owed for the second certificate. So all in all, we paid them $30.00 extra for both of our certificates, plus we are out the $15.00 that was initially paid for the purchase of the certificate to Double Take Deals!

We have called the restaurant twice now, and have "gotten the run-around." We don't want to go so far as to say that they are dishonest, but it sure seems like that is what is going on here. We have been told to call back and speak with the owner, who is mysteriously not there when we call. A reputable business would ask to take your name and number, and ask when a good time to call YOU would be - not the other way around. We have been very polite and reasonable, but told them when we left that we would probably never be back.

Oh, by the way, the food was definitely not worth the price - it is more of a diner type quality restaurant. And my wife felt sick the whole night after eating the crab cakes, which were fluffy on the inside, but overcooked on the outside, and had very little crab. And I had watery, freezer burnt halibut. But the clam chowder was quite good. In fact, when the server realized that she forgot to serve a bowl instead of a cup, she insisted on sending us home with a to go cup of chowder. Please think twice before going to Shirley's Tippy Canoe - because your boat, er umm...canoe might get sunk! We will update if this ever gets resolved.

I had a great afternoon here last summer and Afternoon turned into evening after several drinks. The service was efficient the entire time, which is probably why we stayed for so long. The outdoor seating makes you feel like you're at a well manicured camp ground. They also have live music on the weekends by local artists. Apparently they decorate the whole place during the Christmas season and have some great parties too. I can't say anything about the food, the good times here are more about the drinks and atmosphere.

We visited Shirleys again this morning for breakfast on a weekday morning. First a quite and beautiful drive in the country instead of the traffic to go to some of our other favorite spots. Then we had a wonderful home made breakfast.  great waitress.

The first time I've ever heard of this restaurant, was when I won a $50 Gift Certificate from a church raffle price, 3 years ago. We went there once, and I wasn't that impress.

The other day, another group of us from church went there.  But,  this time, we sat in a place where I can do more observation, and actually used their restroom!

The restaurant is interestingly decorated with a ceiling of bronze-colored metal roofing and recessed lighting (see photo).  This is the 1st time I've seen ceiling indoors used outdoor roofing. The wall background is a black paneling, covered with a nice design made from pine wood strips.  The posts are wrapped in pine.   All in all, the restaurant is very well- decorated throughout.

As for the food, my  husband had the clam chowder (I liked this one) and a cheddar cheese burger.  The chowder had a unique flavor and was excellent.    The cheese burger was perfectly cooked and tasted great.   Others in our group had the Fish and Chips, which they deemed on par with the best they have ever had.   I think visit, I had Fish & Chips. There were 4 fish and I couldn't eat it all!

This time, I ordered Shirley's Homemade Sloppy Joe Sauce piled high on top of our 1/3 lb Burger Patty. Served with homemade French Fries.  It came with French Fries with skin on. I liked these a lot! But, I didn't know the burger was 1/3rd POUND.  I was craving for sloppy Joes, and I didn't care, but if you LOVE LOTS OF PROTEIN, then you'll like this one!  I brought my 3/4th home, and I ate the rest for dinner, but there's still the patty on my bread.

The service was very good as well - even a carafe of ice water was replaced with fresh before it was empty.

One negative:  When I went to use the bathroom, their pantry shelf was in the hallway, filled with large cans of 'sauces' etc. . . I happened to see one of the cans was DENTED.  I would never buy cans @ the grocery store with cans that had dents on them.

I had the worst experience with one of Shirley's waiters. He scolded myself and my friends for sitting at a table that still needed to be cleared (it sat uncleared for far too long without anyone addressing it), which was completely uncalled for.  He continued on an unnecessary rant about having to work on this beautiful day while we were out enjoying it so we should give him a break.

The grand finale....he said in his rude sarcastic tone, "don't forget who is handling your food...now what do you want to drink?"

I'll never be back. Shirley should assess her staffing as there are handfuls of people that are more qualified to be working in the service industry than this piece of work.

Our lunch visit was less than impressive.  I was served fries that were obviously from the bottom of the pan,.(over cooked scraps).  Are there no standards? I mean at 15$ for a chicken sandwich it ought to be outa sight.  This was my second visit in as many weeks and it will be my last for a while.

Shirley the owner? Seems to be on top of things in terms of being onsite but the food served in no way reflects the price you pay!  With a few tweaks this could be a real gem, I hope they get it going right.

    Breakfast at the Tippy Canoe:
I ordered: Chicken Fried Steak with gravy on the side, hash browns, eggs over easy, and sourdough toast.
The CFS was greasy and tasted a bit off.
The hash browns are homemade from small red potatoes thinly sliced with onions. Unfortunately they are missing one of the basic elements of hash browns: the brown/crispness.

My Girlfriends ham and cheese omelet was a bit sad as well. Its was brown like it was cooked on a dirty griddle.

We wont be going back to the Tippy Canoe for breakfast but we will go back for drinks and/or dinner.

I base a lot on service.  We ate here and the prices were a little high for lunch, but not crazy for fish.  I had the crab cakes, halibut and chips.  Halibut was awesome!  The crab cakes had too much breaking.  The cole slaw had been left out or uncovered as it was dry and wilted on top and was tipped so all the juice soaked my crab cakes.  The fries would have been yummy if they had been warm (preferably hot), but they were cold.  When I pointed this out to the waiter he said that was standard temperature and didn't offer to get me new ones really.  Fries are cheap.  Small uninteresting wine list.  Nice location with good outdoor seating.  A little more effort to hide the garbage can would be good.  I had a great view of that.

Impulse trip to Tippy Canoe today. I went off my usuals (Club or Reuben) and ordered a special- The Meatball Sandwich. Very good for a change in pace.

Served with nice, homemade fries. Excellent service. They continue to impress.

Next time, I'm definitely getting the Prime Rib Dip, if they have it. Sounds freaking awesome.

Okay - so I grew up in this area and remember when this was one of the few places to hang (crummy as it was then). I admit they did a nice remodel, so that scores them one star.  However, the service, well...we left without eating.  Therefore, I cannot comment on the food at all. See,we had reservations for over a week for outside seating for 10. They called a few days before our time and confirmed, however, when arrived on time and oops...no reservation, no outside seating available and to top it all off they decided to quit serving from their menu and switch to their most expensive buffet before their published time.  We specifically made reservations early and before their published buffet start time so we were not stuck paying $25 a person. They had signs posted all over the place about buffet start time at noon. Shirley was even there and would not be flexible and claimed that their kitchen was so backed up with orders that they had to stop fixing regular meals and concentrate on the buffet.

What happened to customer service? I hope she does well and I am glad that she worked to fix it up...however,the incompetence of the staff, the not honoring their published information and being inflexible about it...sorry Shirley, one star for you and your dirty floors.

Coming back from Dabney, I remembered seeing a bar along the road. On first impression, it looked like an old dive left over from the Old Highway 30 day tripping days.

My buddy and I walked in expecting beer and a pool table. Instead, we were offered the cozy lodge-style ambiance of Shirley's. We went in the summer, so the back patio was open. Seats and tables carved out of rock, with small firepits (clean burning gas) located around the tables, with live jazz the night we were there. Pretty killer.

The only other thing I can say is, while the food is terrific, you will pay for it. I think we racked up a 150 dollar tab for a few drinks and breakfast for four a couple weeks ago.

Ummm....how can I say this....I'll just be direct. Have you heard of meat glue? Well, Google it.  Turns out inexpensive cuts of meat are sometimes served as expensive cuts by gluing things together, forming it and wrapping a damn slice of bacon around it. Their filet mignon is NOT what it pretends to be, but you still will lay down a few hours wages for it if you order this meal.

My husband and I came out to enjoy dinner and after paying $75 for two plates I could have cooked better myself, I'd rather eat fast food.  The filet mignon as mentioned wasn't real, the menu said we would get garlic bread with our order, but we were instead served average, out of the package dinner rolls instead. When I asked about the garlic bread (which I was looking forward to) they explained that dinners didn't come with garlic bread. So I grab the menu and SHOW them what their own menu says and then they went back in the kitchen and brought some back.  They made it seem like they were "so great at their customer service" for serving me something that I was expecting in the first place. Which, they shouldn't have bothered because what the brought was warm, buttered bread with a few sprinkles of parmesan cheese - AND NO GARLIC!

The server was brand new, as in her first few hours and she didn't know the menu at all (isn't there training before she hit the floor?). The dining room wasn't that busy, thank goodness as the waitress kept having to go seek an answer to every question we had about the menu. Although we were eating in their dining room, there was live music being played outside which sounded good - jazz, I believe. Most of the crowd was outside, and the door was left open, leaving the inside diners to deal with the knats that kept circling our heads while we ate. My husband was recommended this place by close friends who SWEAR this place has great food, but he was as dissappointed as I was.  It was a lovely drive along the Sandy River at dusk to get here, but I won't be coming back.

Jazz and nonsmoking shady patio drew me back here.

Ordered the Crab Louie again but this time I knew to ask them to mix up all the veggies and pile the crab on top.  And what a HUGE portion of fresh crab it was!

Still on the spendy side but healthy sized portions at same time.

This was certainly a great find after a day of hiking in the Gorge.  My friend and I were in the mood for some good steaks and Yelp led us here.

The running theme of the other reviews is that this place is expensive and overpriced.  It certainly doesn't help things when Yelp lists this as $$ instead of $$$ and the restaurant's website doesn't contain prices.  Just so there are no surprises, be prepared to pay what you would at an upscale restaurant downtown.

I happened to luck out.  I went here the Sunday before July 4th and they had what I would describe as a "Backyard BBQ Buffet" with scalloped potatoes, beans and bacon, salad (egg salad and regular), and a discounted entree all for $22.  I got the Filet Mignon and for the price and quality, I'd say it was a good deal.  To top it off, they had a live band, the "Belltones Quartet", playing some sweet jazz music out on the large outdoor patio.  The service was wonderful and I'd say the only thing missing was a view of the river.

Finally, a word of warning to people sensitive to cigarette smoke: the smoking ban doesn't apply to the patio area and there's no shortage of patrons eager to light-up.

    Food: 5
    Service: 5
    Ambiance: 4
    Value: 3
TL;DR: Great food, but pricey when they're not doing their specials

I'm not a big seafood fan, and I realize this is to my detriment, especially in places like the Tippy Canoe. Fresh fish and clam chowder and shrimp and all those things that other people seem to find so much pleasure in. It would be easy to write off the Tippy Canoe as just another spendy seafood place.

BUT. A couple of evenings now, after disc-golfing at Dabney state park, my posse and I have stopped by this place, and it has impressed me in spite of my misgivings re: fish content and price. Yes, most of your dishes are going to be about $15. Yes, they are going to be delicious. In particular, someone in the kitchen is a demon with the sauce. The Swiss Dip sandwich and the mushroom appetizer both come with the sort of mouth-watering brown ambrosia that all other gravy aspires to be: meaty and rich, just salty enough, soaked into their particular medium and irresistible.

So if you're in the mood to pay a little extra to eat a little extra, I would advise that you patronize the TC. Hang out inside and listen to the live music, or wander out back and eat on stone tables, around the faux campfires (gas fixtures) scattered around the back patio. Splurge a little. You'll be glad you did.

"ORIGINALITY is unexplored territory. You get there by carrying a canoe -- you can't take a taxi." --Alan Alda

I guess you really could take a taxi here; It would sure cost a lot though!!
The food here is ORIGINAL recipe and homemade says Shirley; other than the buns everything seemed scratch made. The sauces, the sides, the dressing. Everything was very tasty. I had the BBQ oyster sandwich deluxe with a salad. The oysters were large and pan fried, covered with a sweet tangy sauce, crunchy lettuce and sliced tomatoes. Coworker had the veggie burger (see his review and see how behind I am at writing this).. I thought it was a very good meal, the portions were large enough. But I can't award more than 4 stars because it is EXPENSIVE! The location and setting are great, I bet this is an amazing place in the summer, I might have to venture back out this way in a couple months to have lunch under the old growth next to the river. The outdoor patio seating looks like a wonderful place when the rain stops.  When I save enough change in my piggy bank I will be back, there seems to be a LOT of different food to try!

I've been wanting to go here for years.  Finally went with a couple of coworkers.
    I was pleasantly surprised.
The place is set along the river with huge fir trees.  They have a large nice outdoor area.  I'm looking forward to coming here this summer.

The interior is fun.  Raw wood walls and quaint country feel.  Nice bar without the annoying Lottery machines.
They claim to make everything themselves (ie, homemade).  I believe them.  They have lots of seafood options, but I had the homemade veggie burger.  PERHAPS the best veggie burger I've ever had.  It was huge and came with fries.  Only con:  it was $12.50  and probably the cheapest thing on the menu.

We even met Shirley (who was bartending).  All the staff was very friendly.

Appearances can be deceiving. Shirley's Tippy Canoe lured us in with its charming exterior. A rustic cabin with a fishing theme along the banks of the Sandy River. It is conveniently located just a few miles outside of Troutdale and just down the road from Dabney State Park. I thought, 'What a perfect setting for lunch."

However, once you enter, the river is nowhere to be seen. Instead you are in a dark restaurant with a labyrinth of eating areas. There is a large outdoor patio that would be pleasant during the summer months, but it is fenced so there is no view of the river. Almost every room has at least one TV and since we were there during football playoffs, it was a good spot to catch a game. So in many ways this place is set up as a casual sports bar. Unfortunately the menu prices tell a different tale.

We were there for lunch and most of the sandwiches and lunch entrees were in the $13 range. I would scoff at this in Portland, so the price point seems way of line in the wilds of Troutdale. I'd give you the exact prices, but their on-line menu conveniently omits this information.

For the price, they will serve you a large portion of food. Since we weren't starving, we ended up ordering one item from the kids menu ($5.95, including drink), one burger and split a sandwich. They charge $3.00 to split a plate and each diner gets their choice of a side. The salad and clam chowder were fine, but not outstanding.

The bartender was the highlight of the experience for us. Unfortunately, due to the odd seating in multiple rooms, things can be a bit on the slow side. One table out of six was occupied in each room. Really odd. Ultimately we were happy with the experience, but it isn't one we are eager to repeat.

I've been driving by this place for years.  Yesterday, a friend suggested that we meet there for a drink.  I said, a drink, I have to have lunch first.

I said you probably will have to buy me lunch and he agreed (wow that was easy).  Ok, I bought the last time.  :)

We walked in and it was fairly empty.  To be fair, it was a weekday at around 1pm, it is off the beaten path so you aren't going to get too many people there for lunch.

The waitress said have a seat wherever you like and we chose a table just inside the door.

The decor is kind of cool.  It has a gas fire place, which wasn't in operation at the time but I could envision that, that would be nice on a wet rainy day.  They had plates and cups with a fly fishing motif which perfectly suited this place.

We ordered cheese burgers and fries and my goodness there was a huge plate of food (see pic).  The burger patty was huge and obviously hand created rather than the preprocessed patties you normally receive in many restaurants.  The fries were hand cut potatoes and plenty of them.  I should have had a nice salad but, alas, I'm week and did not.

Being it was a day off from work we had drinks I ordered a cosmo (I know total girl drink) and the boys ordered beers.    They mix a mighty fine cosmo there.

So, after a while I sought out the restrooms, they are clear on the other side of the restaurant but it gave be a chance to check out the place.  It is bigger than I thought and has a great deal of outdoor seating.  I look forward to checking it out in the summer.

The bathrooms were two unisex rooms.  I selected the one on the right which had no toilet paper in it at all.  Bummer, but I'm always prepared for that.  It looks like someone thought of that as the spool from the dispenser was sitting on the closed toilet lid but yeah none to be found.

The flooring in the place is carpeted, I think to hide the unevenness of the flooring (perhaps subfloor) issues (and no it wasn't the cosmos talking haha)  I can imagine after a few drinks you would get to wondering.

There is a small dance floor on one side of the bar and occasionally they have live entertainment.  I would imagine you could have a rocking time in here on one of those nights.

We sat and chatted for a while and generally enjoyed the place.  I'm sorry I waited so long to check it out.

    I'll be back.

The setting for Shirley's Tippy Canoe could not possibly be better. The restaurant itself is out among the trees and right up next to the Sandy river. The interior of Tippy Canoe feels like someones riverside cabin. There's a fish theme throughout the restaurant with interesting artifacts. Cozy, warm, and comfortable.

The menu is so Northwest. Humongous breakfasts, seafood, BBQ, sandwiches, and burgers. Shirley's Tippy Canoe thinks outside of the box and serves things like the "Italian sausage burger." Shirley even puts her own spin on clam chowder. The clam chowder is just as unusual as it is delicious. At Shirley's Tippy Canoe a diner has the choice of french fries, soup, or clam chowder with the burgers at no extra cost. My advice? Go for the clam chowder!

Service here is friendly, attentive, and caring.

The prices at Shirley's Tippy Canoe. Ouch! This is an expensive restaurant. My companion and I had breakfast/lunch and our bill came to way over $40. It's true that Tippy Canoe has large proportions and it's true that they serve gourmet food. However, the prices did not seem congruent with a cozy restaurant out in the woods.

Whatever, Shirley's Tippy Canoe gives you an excellent Oregon dining experience in a truly idyllic setting.

Hooray! Huge breakfast portions, homemade fruit preserves like strawberry and peach with pineapple, possibly homemade poppy seed bread, gigantic Ramos Fizz and Mimosas and the best service by a lively waitress that rattles off all the specials so fast at you it makes your head spin.

Hubby had eggs Benedict scallops with a huge side of thinly sliced potatoes and onions.  I had the bay shrimp cheddar cheese omelet which had to be 5 eggs, it was seriously huge. Potatoes on the side there as well and they were delicious. The owner of the place used to have restaurants out at the coast, so she knows and understands all about the importance of fresh seafood and it was all super fresh and tender.

We'll be back. In fact I can't stop thinking about the preserves and toast. I would drive out there just to eat that and sit on the back patio.

They offer live jazz and blues bands Fri and Sat nights out on the huge back patio. We were invited to attend and we just might have to check it out.

The breakfast prices are pretty steep but for what you get in return, an extra meal in leftovers, it is well worth it. Go check this place out, and then enjoy a lovely drive out historic HWY 30.

Went here with my husband after reading all these great reviews and the only positive thing I got was the great clam chowder. I had 3 different people tell me what they aren't serving which was annoying then I ordered the Philly cheese steak and fries, can't go wrong with that... I thought, the meat on the cheese steak tasted stale and tough the cream cheese (btw who puts cream cheese on a cheese steak but whatever) the cream cheese was hard and the fries wow, they were frozen and then burned and then were sitting and getting soggy!
My husband got a hamburger and he liked it not the fries though. The clam chowder is the only reason this review isn't one star. This is just my opinion but this place is definitely a place I will drive right past next time.

Stopped by for Breakfast.  The food was awesome.  We dined on the patio and it was great.  The service was superb, coffee rich, tasty and served in huge mugs.   Only reason it's not 5 stars was the price was a bit high.  Otherwise no complaints.

Great back patio, very tasty refreshing mojito, and nice decor.  I believe they grow their own herbs and that everything including the desserts are made in-house.

They do have a happy hour menu!. The ham sandwich was tasty, and so was the artichoke dip.  I will go back and try the wings and nachos.  Smoked salmon and cheese plate might be good off the other menu too!

The only thing I didn't like was paying $10 for one drink.  Come on!  I can see paying $8 at the most, and would have considered getting two.

Stopped by for breakfast this morning. Greeted by Shirley the owner with lengthy list of menu items. When we got the menu I noticed the prices were over the top. $17 for a breakfast item?  I ordered pancakes and egg off the kids menu for $6 and was quite happy with it. Amazing home made peach preserves. Food was really good but really over priced. Great outdoor area with interesting stone tables and seats.

Anyplace I can get fried oysters served Benedict style with Hollandaise sauce and a big ol Bloody Mary for brunch is a winner in my book. Plus the old-school roadhouse/cabin with epic outdoor seating area is awesome. River, trees, fried seafood and booze! Smells like fun!

The Tippy Canoe is a great stop on the way back from a day of hiking in the Gorge. It's an old-school 1940's cabin-style riverside lodge, renovated in 2009 with low ceilings and all wood paneling, several dining areas, a big bar, fireplace lounge area, and HUGE patio out back. I love the artist-crafted Fred Flintstone tables!

Shirley makes good home-style cookin' taste great with local, fresh ingredients and homemade sauces. Ridiculously gigantic portions! It IS  expensive for what the place looks like, but the quantity (GIANT) and quality are there, so you get what you pay for. Share your meals (with maybe an extra side salad or appetizer), so you'll have room for  dessert!

Good Happy Hour (page 244 of the Portland Happy Hour Guidebook), and now they have great drink specials too! Woo hoo!!

My family and I went to the Tippy Canoe for the first time after Christmas.  We were pleasantly surprised with the welcoming environment and the menu selection.  In fact, their special of the day was fresh seafood sandwiches with your choice of either Dungeness crab, shrimp, or lobster when we were there.

Our waitress was friendly and helpful with menu selections but overall the service was a little slow.  The meals were very generous in portion size and VERY rich (a little rich for my taste).

Overall, a good experience and we try this restaurant again.

This place is cool. I mean really cool. Apparently it used to be a rough and tumble biker bar which may have made it even cooler back then, but its still pretty awesome.

Tucked out the Historic Hwy just about 4 miles outside of Troutdale, backing to the Sandy River the restaurant is a large wooden structure nestled in some trees. The first thing noticeable is the spacious natural outdoor eating area that is seasonally filled with goofy decorations (at Xmas its a hoot) and the uber tall sign of a cartoon Indian and a canoe.

Inside is just as "interesting" as the outside and I really feel like my great-grandmother has risen from the dead to spread all of the ancient artifacts of decoration she had in her house around the restaurant. Everything is just a bit cheesy and hoakie but it looks like someones holiday family reunion and is warm and welcoming and instantly one expects something magical.

When you look at the menu prices you will also expect something magical, however, that is not the case. Overpriced and under supported by food quality makes for a mood killing combo. Mostly of seafood and steak fare it isnt a restaurant for the lover of salad or money in the wallet. However, if you want a nice evening out, in a good spot, with good service, this would be nice convenient spot... especially if on motorcycle.

Highlight: BIG ASS GOURMET BLOODY MARYS. Have one. Have two.

I felt compelled to take a pic of my Bloody Mary last time I was there... will post when I figure out how.
