I've been going to SLO Down Pub for a few years now. Â We like to go for the beer and live music. Â The food and service used to be better under the previous owners. We were there tonight to listen to the band. Â We had no service at the table at all. Â We had to order our own beer and food at the bar. Â It took a long time to get the food and when we did, it was overcooked, dry and very unappetizing. Â The live music, dance floor and cold beer are worth going for, but definitely not the food or service.
Review Source:We used to love this place. A lot has changed. We walked in after a nice dinner out for a drink and to listen to music. Only 2 members of the advertised trio were playing. We walked up to order a drink and we were stared down by several men at the bar including the owner who was the worst offender. We have never been treated so rudely in a place of establishment that we have patronized for several years in our life. The owner should be ashamed of himself for turning away good customers. We felt awkward and unwelcome in a place where we used to have a great time 2 to 3 times a week. We will not be back. Very sad place...
Review Source:Well a nice little bar, simple, plain, and small town. The staff is quite friendly, the food is bar food. Just average bar food. I did like the hot soft pretzels, with the mustard a nice touch. I had a vege sandwich which was very nice, fat and fresh. she had the salmon sandwich which was a C minus at best. The wine pours are very hefty.
We went for the live music and were very pleased with the entertainment. Come on by for a beer or a wine.
This place is pretty eclectic and I would say you have to be bit of a weird duck to fit in here. If you are not 50+ forget it for sure. They seem to have a decent wine selection but as far as beer it's all Firestone. Nothing wrong with Firestone but odd they have several taps that are all Firestone. There is a separate place that does the food here.... somewhat odd again. They sometimes have good local bands. I've been here several times trying to like this place but maybe at 46 I'm still too young.
Review Source:Whenever there's a sign for wine waving high from the street, say no more and sign me up!
This place was strange.. we approached curiously because it seemed like a cool, artsy lil joint...even from the front with the sculpture surrounded by beautiful flowers (see pic)
There were NO cars in front. So, we entered totally expecting to scope it out and hurry up and get the fuck out of there.
However, when we entered, it was a vast space full of local art on the ceiling and on the walls. Piranhas with large teeth and sea horses swing from the ceiling, next to chandeliers made from cut wine bottles. It was pretty awesome.
The bar is way at the back.. there are couches and plenty of places to sit... a stage for bands to play and even some room in front for peeps to dance.
The man and I grabbed wine (Riesling) and a beer (Velvet Merlin Oatmeal Stout) and decided to play some backgammon. He won (I let him) :).. The game was  weird though and missing pieces so, it threw me off my game..yeah that's it.
I enjoyed perusing the art tables on the tables and just the over-all cool vibe. Definitely a great place to stop for a drink if you're in the area.
The servers were super sweet and advised us of their Thursday night 1/2 priced burger special. But, the place just didn't seem like the kind of place where the food would shine, so we passed. The place seems new and trying to find it's niche.
Maybe they should keep it as a cute wine and entertainment kind of bar with minimal appetizers instead? Ahh who knows? Â I bet Robert Irvine would.
Once we finished our game and 2nds on drinks, there was some sort of Bluegrassy lookin band setting up and so  - we left. I'll do anything to avoid Bluegrass.  Not to be confused with blue grass, because I think a lawn full of blue grass would be pretty awesome.
I love this place. It has a casual/cool vibe. Good wine and often times live music of various assorts. I also enjoy the lounge areas and local art work that is displayed around. Linked to the pub is an adorable cafe, Ellie's Place. They have delicious food and you can order tapas and enjoy wine in the pub!
Review Source:Fun place with an unusual compressed dance floor- imagine entering when a band is playing, and having to time your trip to the bar between the dancers and the small (usually packed) tables.
Aside from the machinations for getting a drink, this is a place to check out for it's various bands, the 'regulars' (Norm!) and the encroaching restaurant kitchen - which is the reason for the compression in the dance area.
Fun people, friendly atmosphere, and fairly good selection of beers, as they carry a lot of wine labels, just not my favorites.
I think I dance better on beer, anyway!
Found this place when I was doing some ER nursing on the Central Coast. Great music! Very cool art to look at. The food is simple, reasonable, and very good. Wonderful, friendly locals. And, I found Firstone Double Barrel Ale..amazing beer! (The bummer is that when we headed home for NY..its not there..boo) We are back in Cali for a stint now, near SF and are definately making the trip to to hang there before we head back East again.
Review Source:I worked in this building as a kid when it was a hobby/pet store. Anyone else remember the monkey or Mayan bird?
Good local beers on tap. Local art on walls. Only been here while having lunch at Ellie's, little diner/breakfast type place that shares the space, but I see the huge parking lot packed on a regular basis on the evenings, I think it's the new middle age and up hang out for the good beer/food/music/art crowd.
SLO Down has some good beer on tap, if you like Firestone. Â Which I do!
I made the journey over to watch open mic night and had a pitcher.  I wish I had not eaten before I showed up because some of the grub  I saw coming from the cafe looked real good. Â
Decent selection of wines.  I would definitely go back and try a little more of everything.  Probably on a Monday so I can hear some more music  too.
This Pub is a landmark in San Luis Obispo. Great location, tons of nice people and friendly bartenders. I never have to worry about feeling out of place or ignored. It's always a friendly group of locals who make you feel welcome. Now that music has been added, I enjoy it even more. The locals love the bands and people are dancing all about. Wonderful place to have fun and hear good music .
Review Source:Wow what a great place! The husband and I feel right at home here. The wine selection is wonderful and decently priced. They pour you HUGE glasses too. The husband loves the Porter and Chai beer. It looks a bit strange in the back of the parking lot but it's sooooo worth it. Great live music as well, we usually go for bluegrass jam sessions on Sundays. Hope to see you there!!!
