I have been coming here for years. In the early 2000's I used to be in this joint at 3 in the morning with only six other people. Needless to say, this place is one of the coolest spots in Montgomery partial because it has been around for sooooo long. My mother used to frequent the place. And she remembers the bartender and the man on the keyboard. It was pretty cool sharing memories about the place, but during different time periods ;) The drinks are ALWAYS strong, and everyone is family.

Fast forward to present day, Where in the hell did all these people come from?!?! This place was my hide away. My spot to cuddle with a date underground. This was my cave. Although I am glad that the owners are getting the business, but I fear that many can'r appreciate the history of the place.

This place is truly a Montgomery gem. It is not your typical club, but it so laid that you will fall in love with the people.

Sous La Terre keeps the party going into the wee hours every time!  When you're leaving other spots and you know it's not time to end the night, this jazz bar is so perfect.  The music is awesome in the background when you're talking with your group and then occasionally, the piano player will shine a light on a young lady and she'll be placed up next to him until some gentleman asks to dance through the song.  It's fun.  There are couples dancing the majority of time.

Drinks are crazy strong.  You certainly get every penny's worth and they are priced right.  Bartenders are always ready for witty banter and serve quick.  They'll come around and serve some quick food items, like some great french fries, which is always a hit with a late night group.

Can't say a single thing bad about this place.  I've been twice in last two weeks and it's an overall superb time.  Everyone in there is always buzzing with a great vibe!

I love this place!!! It is underground & the smell proves it...you get use to it very fast! They open at midnight, band comes on at 1 or 1:30 am depending...live blues & jazz. They have popcorn, one flavor of wings (which are good) & very strong drinks...I was like do I get any cranberry with this vodka?!?!? It is smokey (you can smoke here), diverse, you can sit & people watch or dance. I was surprised that a place like this existed here...it had a very Soho, NY feel about it. Great place for the SUPER late crowd!

Whenever I get the pleasure of "going back home", I try very hard to make it here.  The drinks are strong, the employees are a trip, the people are entertaining, and the overall feel of the establishment takes me back to a scene from the movie Ray.  One of the last places in the Montgomery that reminds you of the old southern vibe that has been mostly lost.

Sous La Terre is one of my favorite places in Montgomery.  A friend once (very accurately) described it as, "like being inside an old trumpet case."  Don't let that scare you; it's actually a favorable thing in my book.  The place is one of a kind, and when you're underground at Sous La Terre you feel like you could be in any one of the country's major cities.  Or in a David Lynch movie.  Either way, the music is cool, the drinks are strong and the crowd is always entertaining.  Ladies, I suggest going with a group if you're going to go.  It's not unsafe, but it can definitely be a lion's den at times.  I've always had the most fun there with a crowd of friends, the later at night (read: earlier in the morning), the better!

Trying to decide what would be my first review...then I saw Sous La Terre. I havent been in a few years but it never seems to change. This place is classic!! A Montgomery landmark!! There is not a place in Montgomery that looks, sounds or smells like Sous La Terre.
After you open the front door - you go down steps to go "under the ground" - the unique smell of the place hits you. Not bad - just very unique. Great drinks - VERY STRONG!! GREAT mix of folks - from old school black gentlemen & ladies who still dress to impress to young white college kids. The college kids can be overwhemling sometimes but as long as you have a table of friends (old or new) you wil have a good time. Henry Pugh plays the organ and sings classics from "what a wonderful world" to "Strokin'" - plus he likes to serenade the ladies on a stool. Some other things I'll mention but you'll have to go to find out what they mean - "MUDDY WATER" & "the Zodiac dance". The last thing I'll mention is they don't open until midnight - so take a nap early on a Fri. or Sat. night and then get there around 12:30. Don't be surprised if the sun is coming up when you leave.
