Hold up....the same beers as vine st pub and mountain sun? Â BUT with plenty of seating and parking? Â
Um....HECK YES. Â
This place is huge and for the first time ever, I didn't have to wait for a table like I usually do at Vine and Mountain! Â
This place is still cash only but they have an ATM there.
Same beers, same delicious hummus, and same chill vibe. Â Heck yes I'll be back!
I went here in the summer of 2013 with some friends, and was largely disappointed. Â First - and this is important - it was pointed out to me just before ordering that the restaurant does not accept credit cards! Â This was not communicated to me by a waiter, host(ess), etc. but rather one of my dinner companions. Â Â As I had been planning to pay for all, but was (customarily) not carrying cash, this could have led to catastrophic problems if this hadn't been noticed and my friends had not been carrying cash. Â I suppose we might have been able to wash dishes and mop the floors? Â Â In any event, we survived because we collectively had cash. Â But no credit cards? Â And you don't ask your waiters to tell the guests that? Â Â This is 2013, after all. Â Â Very strange.
The meal was okay.  I ordered steak frites, and the meat was good as were the fries.  No complaints there.  One of my friends had a pizza, and complained that it had virtually no toppings, which was true.  It was largely a hunk of bread that tasted faintly of cheese.  As I had been considering ordering the pizza margherita, I was pleased with my choice.  I don't remember what my other friend (the husband of the pizza-eating observant soul that noticed "no credit cards" on the menu) had, but he didn't much care for it.
Finally, my beer (which was good) was brought to me in a quite warm glass that was clearly fresh from the dishwasher.  It was a hot day, and a cold - or better yet iced - glass would have been great.  The warm glass didn't appeal.
I think this place has a long, long way to go.   Nearby is the Tandoori Grill, which is a good Indian place (that even serves beer in cold glasses!), and I will be choosing Indian instead of Brew Pub in this shopping center from now on.
And come on.  Accept credit cards.
Stopped in with a large group last week. Â Annapurna Amber for me was tasty. Â Wait staff was great and we had no problems with entrees being delivered considering the number in our party.
I don't think anyone if the group had complaints about their food. Â I had a burger but only at the meat patty. Â the burger was as thick as it was wide, meaning it was too thick for me to take a bite, instead i ate only the meat patty and one side of bun with knife and fork - kind of takes the fun out of eating a burger.
Appetizers - fries, nachos and wings were good.
Ambiance is loud, busy and perfect place to kick back.
Got seated quickly. Food came out quickly.
The problem? We ordered the happy hour crab fries and the plantains. Plantains were overcooked, thus they were very dry and hard. The light green sauce that came with it was really bland, but the dark green dipping sauce was actually really good. If you let that sauce saturate the plantain, they become much more edible. The crab fries were way too salty, and all the smaller fries on the plate were over cooked.
The tempeh rueben wasn't too bad. The tempeh itself needed a little more seasoning, but all and all, I recommend it.
My wife had the half order spinach salad. All the tomatoes were mushy, as if they were cut five hours prior and left out to wilt. They looked like it too. The salad should come out on a bigger plate. The serving size was nice, though.
Ordered a java stout. Delicious!
If you are looking for a pub style restaurant for the summer, where beer and salty food will make your day, this will suit that desire just fine... but, if you're hoping for the Boulder standard of food, accompanied with affordable pricing, don't expect the former.
Oh, and the really strange, outdated part of the whole affair...? They don't take cards. The funny thing is, they take checks or cash. Yup, I said it... they take checks instead of cards. 2013? There is a cash machine in the back, though.
Somehow I have lived within a few miles of Boulder my whole life, and I'd never been to Southern Sun. When a friend was visiting from out of town, he told me we had to go there, as he loved it in college. Late-ish on a Friday night (9:15 or so) we headed over.
I will say that there are MANY delicious things here: the wings are literally the best I have ever had. They are amazing; not spicy enough (we ordered "hot" but they were basically mild) but really amazingly cooked. The nachos were huge, with tons of toppings and were reasonable for the serving. The beer was delicious, the menu is diverse and I have no issue with the food or drink.
So why 3 stars? So glad you asked:
1. Cash only. Come on, you're not a mom-and-pop hole in the wall. Pretty damn sure the fancy counterpart Under the Sun takes cards, so, uh, yeah, get with it. At least the atm has minimal fees ($1)
2. I left my debit card at the bar after visiting the ATM and asking for change. Not the bartender's fault, but we were one of 2 tables in the entire restaurant, and they just pocketed my card and waited for me to come find it. Would it have been that hard to just freaking bring it to me?
3. We never had a waiter. THe GM came over and was admittedly awesome, super nice, but told us he was only serving us because our server sucked, basically, and then ignored us for our entire visit. So, we never got water refills, etc. unless someone was delivering something to our table.
4. Their "growlers" are just freaking stupid. They use large mason jars. Oh, how cute. Yeah, except that no one else will except them and they don't seal them properly. How do I know? Oh, because they both were filled so quickly they were fizzing and overflowing as I left the restaurant. Within 30 seconds in my car they had flipped over and the lids just popped off, meaning they just weren't sealed at all, like they were mis-threaded. I lost half of my "growler" to my floor mat because they want to be all twee and use mason jars.
So, the food and drink is awesome, but the attitude is super Boulder-y. Take home point: eat here, insist on using your own growler. Southern sun: take cards, use jars with CAPS not lids, and just get over yourself.
I have a sub-mission in life ( not the same as submission) to find the best chicken wings I can in the area.  It doesn't hurt if the restaurant  has a multitude of amazing microbrews like the Southern Sun does.
So...the wings...they are good! Â You can get them hot or naked. Â We went hot. The wings had ample meat and were perfectly cooked and arrived hot with the typical carrot and celery accoutrements.
Thumbs up to the Sun for their wings!
Great beer selection, one of the better ones in town I've found, so far. Â It is loud, as others have commented, so I wouldn't take a date here. Â It's a little bright inside and the decor caught me off guard, it wasn't what I expected. Â Kind of reminded me of a bier tent in Munchen with its long wooden tables. Â
Here's my one complaint and I've experienced it elsewhere too. When the servers offers a sub for the chips that come with the sammy they should inform you of the cost of the upcharge. Â
OK, I have two. Â How come they charge you for additions to the salad but don't give you a credit for subtractions. Â For example, I don't like onions or tomatoes so I had them held from my sammy and salad. Â But when I wanted to add avocado or nuts to the salad it was going to cost extra. Â I think in the future I'll ask for the items I don't like on the side and then leave them behind. Â
Cash only, which I like. Â Doesn't impact their business, it was packed @ 7:30 on a Wed.
I really enjoy this place. Â It is very kid friendly, and laid back. Â The food and beer have always been great. Â The only downside is that it does get quite busy so there is usually a wait for our family of 6....but they are always giving out free fries and beer samples while you wait, so it's not too bad!
Review Source:I just got charged $9.50 for one pint of nitro :( Â My server nor the menu warned me of such costly beverage. Â Ouch.
At any rate, the burgers are great here. Â I especially like the Basil Bleu Burger. Â The beer is muy tasty too. Â Other than the occasional service hick-up, this place is A-OK. Â The biggest downside? Â This place fills up super fast, so get there early.
I hear rumors of an addition being added on??
There is some HUGE love going on in Boulder for Southern Sun. It came off as your average bar, with the kind of bar food tailor made for the Boulderites it caters to. Psuedo-healthy bar food. Â Pretty good, not out of this world but pretty good. Â I've never had any of their brews but have heard some great things.
The service was prompt and friendly which is about all I ask for.
Once when I was leaving Southern Sun, I came close to hitting a bicycler. No, I hadn't had any alcohol. Â I sincerely felt really terrible. Â I wanted to apologize but he just went on his merry way without so much as flinching. Â It seemed like "he gets that alot". Â There are so many cyclers in Boulder AND motorized vehicle traffic that eventually, I'm certain everyone (at the very least) ALMOST gets hit. Sorry, bro.
As many have mentioned, SS only takes cash.
Alice,
Remember how you went to the Southern Sun's sister restaurant, Mountain Sun, last week and forgot cash?
CASH ONLY, damn it, cash only!
Annapurna Amber is always a good fallback but other seasonal ales have been equally delicious. The veggie quesadilla was a little disappointing (try it with chicken next time), the Buffalo Chicken sandwich pretty good, and the Junk Burger.. always.
Good beer, good food, but cash only.
I had the Nitro Special Bitter, XXX Pale Ale and the Nitro Stout. The first two were excellent but the stout was just okay. Had Nachos for dinner which were more than enough to share and delicious. No complaints about the service.
Luckily I had cash on me as this place doesn't take cards. I guess it must be a Boulder/Hippie thing - but get with the 21st century!
Southern Sun is my favorite place to be in Boulder. I'm lucky enough to live within walking distance and I head to the Sun far too often for my wallet, but it is always worth it. It is fun to be there, plain and simple. The servers are great and always friendly. I never have to wait long to get a beer and although it can take some time get a table on the weekends, our food always comes quickly once we order it.
The beer is fantastic. FY is my normal choice, but I will always make a special visit if I hear that Vagabond IPA is back on tap (please please please please please make Vagabond more often!). I also really like the food. I normally order whatever vegetarian option is on the specials menu, but the Boom Boom sandwich is always tasty. And I have no idea what to say to the people who don't like the fries. They are soooo good with malt vinegar and always make the hangry disappear.
All in all, the Southern Sun is a great place to be.
I like the atmosphere but the food is horrible! Â The fries are ALWAYS greesy and soggy....and they seem to acknowledge that they know it!! Â I ordered the crab cake burger and it was all breading and no crab (and deep fried, seriously). Â I have been several times but I think I am done giving them a try.
Please care about your food!!! Â Some people want more than just a beer.
Sometimes I don't know if I go to a place for the food or the beer in Boulder!
Here, I think I can say I go more for the food; but they have quality beer as well.
My first time here was during their famous brunch, everything was fantastic.
Second time, was a random night just for drinks with a friend that turned into a bit of a party with others joining us.
Overall, our service was great to start off with, but as we moved to a bigger table, a server was quite the asshole to us. Then we never got our tacos we ordered. He also complained about how many tabs we had open. I'm sorry, that we had a group join us later. Big deal.
Since we never got our tacos, the manager came and took care of our bills. That's right we didn't pay a dime, over five dollars worth of tacos. Now, do I think five dollars in tacos was worth the rest of the things we ordered...not really. But, I appreciated their compensation for their service never providing. I think not paying compensated for the asshole we dealt with overall.
Any who, I'd say go for the brunch! :)
They get props for naming one of their beers after my screensaver photo which is the 5 star route in Joshua Tree National Park The Illusion Dweller. Love the Illusion Dweller.
Cash only. Totally Hippy Food. Healthy, clean and good for u. Right next door to Neptune Mountaineering so I guess that's to be expected. I like Hippy food. I like healthy, clean tasting,  flavorful  food. I just want to know why the hippies don't take credit cards? Conspiracy.
I can't possibly say enough good things about this place! From the top notch service to the incredibly delicious and varied selection of hand-crafted beers to the yummy food on the menu, visiting the Southern Sun is an absolute must!
My wife and I (fiancé then) were looking for a place to throw a pre-wedding party for about 80 out-of-town guests on the evening before our big day. After checking at a few other local places and being astonished by what they were going to charge us to host such a part, we decided to make a trip down to Table Mesa to visit one of my favorite local breweries. Mike Absalom and his incredibly friendly and capable staff jumped in and offered to host our party and truly blew us away. They went way above and beyond to make the event something that we and our guests will remember forever! Thank you so much!
I love this place. Â Great beer, good food and good service. Â I've liked nearly every beer that I've tried and especially like the Rye, the FYI, XXX and FYX (half FYI and XXX). Â The nitro options are also good.
For food, the nachos are about as good as it gets. Â We also love the Tims Blackened Chicken Quesadillas which are a great take out option. Â We have tried several other options from burgers, to sandwiches and are never disappointed. Â
On service, they have generally been fast and have made corrections (like giving me a free beer) if they thought that I waited too long for food (and this is without me complaining). Â At busy times they will put out french fries or other snacks in the waiting area.
My daughter, who is tough to feed, says it's her favorite restaurant, which means that I get to go there and drink that great beer.
The downsides? Â It's crowded, loud and yes, they only take cash or local checks. Â Also, there are no TVs so even though it has the feel of a sports bar, you won't be watching the game here.
Dates, poblano peppers, goat cheese and bacon on a burger?? To quote David after Dentist, "IS THIS REAL LIFE?" (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv159%2Fstone_princess%2Fgifs%2Ftumblr_lxeximizbE1qcvth1.gif&s=9d25bb19fdab31d29c43105fb4408885011b4c1e8c52ba523e22c4ead55e78b8" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://img.photobucket.c…</a>) Great combo, Southern Sun. My java porter and hummingbird brew were both really tasty.
Bummer that they're cash only, but there's a Wells Fargo really close by. I really want to try to replicate that Date Night burger. It has been haunting my dreams.
Great pub and low key eatery with some good beer choices. The good is simple, but always good, with some unique specials and meals to accommodate pretty much any needs. Good beer selection of in house brews, and February Stout month is amazing if you like dark beers.
Plenty of seating, so even when busy it moves fairly quickly, much better than Mountain Sun which is always over crowded with no seating. It can be quite loud on a busy evening, so not a good place if you are looking for quiet and upscale. One thing to always remember is that Southern Sun/Mountain Sun/Vine Street only accept cash and local checks. There are a few ATMs within a short walk of Southern Sun.
This place is wonderful. The people who work there are all very nice. The beer is awesome (they brew it there) and the food is really good. The burgers are some of the best in Boulder.
It's a very family friendly place, lots of families with young kids there as well as groups of just adults getting together. The combination makes for a really nice ambience.
And the only alcohol is beer, which means you rarely get anyone who's really drunk.
CASH OR LOCAL CHECKS ONLY! Â I guess it is nice that they take local checks. Â Who the hell takes checks anymore?
After reading the reviews, which I should have done before going, I clearly should have gotten a burger. Â I got a carne asada burrito and it was not good. Â The tortilla was hard, crispy and stuck to the plate. Â The burrito had big chunks of chewy meat. Â It kind of reminded me of my undergrad food coop. Â Their heart is in it but they are still trying to figure out how to make food after leaving home for the first time.
Nice folks, good service. Â I like that the beer growlers are mason jars. Â And the ginger molasses cake was to die for. Â Someone back there knows how to bake!
I tried three beers here. Â The Illusion Dweller IPA was ok. Â Certainly not one of the better IPAs I've had. Â The Nihilist tasted mediciny and I couldn't finish it. Â But the XXX Pale Ale, which my husband had the fortune of ordering, was excellent. Â
So in a nutshell - XXX Pale Ale and ginger molasses cake. Â And bring cash.
I drank a Java Porter and a  ginger beer (real beer, not ginger ale, that was made by someone other than Mountain Sun but I forget....there are just sooo many to choose from) and they were both delicious.  They went nicely with my grilled cheese, tomato and bacon sandwich. Â
This place is homey. Â I think out of all the restaurants that the Mountain Sun people own, this is the most comfy/homey. Â I guess cause it is the most spacious. Â I just feel like I am in a stoner's basement when I am in these restaurants. Â Good conversation and nothing pretentious about this. Â Decent food, good service and splendid beer. Â I'll go back. Â This is a place for friends:) Â Its always busy.
While I don't really think that the southern sun is the best at anything, Â they are DAMN good at lots of things and almost all that they do.
Warnings about this place:
*As many have said, they only take cash, be prepared.
*Lunch hours, not always open
*Special Tappings, can frequently be gone by the time they say they are going to tap it, so get there early.
*Asking for chili means red chili to many of their servers, when we all clearly know that it should be their green chili.
Other than those things, I am a big fan of this place. Â They have very solid beers, as many have said, not my favorite brewery, but they usually have a wide enough selection that you will find something that fits your pallet. Â They are also pretty generous with the tastes, to help you find what will work best for you. Â They tend to be a bit heavy on the hoppy beers outside of stout month, which is Feburary and is fantstic. Â
As far as food goes, I am also a big fan. Â Their french fries are great, but unfortunately so are their salads, which always makes the side order question a tough one. Â I am a huge fan of the Date night burger, which got promoted to a constant spot on the menu after a recurring role on the specials list. Â Their green chili is also great, and really should be on top of most anything you order.
The service is usually pretty good as well. Â They do the swarm server style, in which not one person is your waiter, and everyone is supposed to be. Â Most days this works out great, but you do get the occasion where someone thinks someone else is taking care of you, or just did.
This is a frequent stop for me and will continue to be. Â I encourage your to do the same, unless I am behind you in line :)
First off, the customer service as soon as we walked in was fantastic. The floor manager pulled us aside as we were waiting and offered us a couple of tasters in order to help us choose the beer we wanted to drink while we waited. They also had a basket of fries available to munch on until our table was ready.
We came in during Stout Month, so the beer selection was large and focused around dark beers. They had a lot of quality to choose from. The Imperial Coffee Stout was my favorite.
The reason we made the trip was because I had had the nachos a few years back and remembered that they were the best that I had ever had. The only weird thing about them on our return visit was that the beans and salsa were split on different halves of the nachos. We were able to mix it a but, but I wish it was fully mixed. Either way, I couldn't find a chip without some toppings on it.
I had the mushroom sandwich, which was tasty, but was just below memorable. My friend had the buffalo wings, which ended up being some of the best I had in a long time. The Spicy BBQ sauce was well balanced between sweet and spicy, and they had tons of meat on them.
The service was fantastic, and our server was extremely helpful in recommending beers and food.
The place was packed and full of high energy people enjoying their meals and conversations.
If you are visiting from out of town, you MUST come here at least before you leave. Â This is the heart of what Boulder is all about. Â They brew their own beer, which is the best I've ever had, and they don't sell it anywhere else. Â Get a java porter; if you like dark beers, this will rock your socks! Â I'd also recommend their nachos (a half order is more than enough for two people to share, and make sure you ask for it "one love" style). Â This place is always packed (even more so on the Pearl St. Mountain Sun location). Â
If I had one complaint, it would be that they only accept cash. Â Don't even try to convince them to start accepting credit cards. Â They won't do it. Â They get plenty of business as it is and probably just don't want to incur the cc fees. Â Well, hopefully that helps to keep their prices reasonable. Â Ah well...
I have been eating and drinking at the Mountain and Southern Sun for many moons now. Sure there are a few things that irritate me about each location but overall, I always have a good time.
If you like beer, taste a lot of them. I love the blackberry or raspberry wheat, the Anna Purna and if they have it, go for the ginger beer as it is outstanding. If you don't like beer, they have in house root beer that is absolutely fantastic although a bit pricey :/
One reason the Southern Sun trumps the Mountain Sun? Pub Chicken Wings. Get them 1/2 and 1/2 - half spicy wing sauce and half sweet BBQ. You will be really happy.
I love their nachos - they use a convection oven to ensure every chip and every piece of cheese is heated through, crisped and melted. The burgers are great here as well. A lot of people I know are fanatic about the french fries but they aren't my fav. I usually get a salad with my burger because they make KILLER dressings here. The homemade ranch is some of the best around.
Service is always great - every member of the staff is on constant rotation. For instance the line cook on Monday will be a waiter on Tuesday, a bus boy on Wednesday and a FOH Manager on Thursday. Because each staff member does every job at the restaurant, they really do take care of business. Love this idea.
Atmosphere and noise level are the two irritating factors for me. It's usually packed to the gills, there are tons of tie-dye clad kids running around with ketchup on their hands and often the wait can be up to an hour. That's cool, I get that it has kind of turned into a sceney place (not much else in South Boulder either) so I go during off hours.
Pro-tip: Call ahead, get your chicken wings extra crispy with sauce on the side. When you go to pick up your food, grab a growler of your favorite beer and bring that shit home with you!!!!
Strangely for me, the best part about this place was the atmosphere and service. Â Normally my face is too buried in my food to notice these things. Â Since all I ate was part of a shared plate of nachos, and the rest of the time just watched my friends drink their beer, I was free to notice everything else. Â A makeshift bluegrass band hanging out at the table in the back! Â The friendliest, goofiest waiter who dished out crap quite as well as he took it! Â A man jumping from table to table excitedly warning people about the DUI checkpoint on Broadway and Baseline!
I ordered a quart of root beer to bring home to my root-beer-connoisseur of a boyfriend and they forgot to add it to the bill, but I paid for it anyway. Â (I should mention in all fairness that my boyfriend hated the root beer and I ended up having to drink all of it myself, which was hard because it was essentially boiled down fennel.)
I definitely prefer hanging out in this pub than in most of the other bars in Boulder (which tend to be stuffed to the gills with half naked, grinding, puking college students and earsplitting jam bands). Â Southern Sun even carries a beer that I could tolerate a sip of (something with mint) and that's pretty amazing!
This review holds true for both the Mountain Sun and Southern Sun, so you will see it posted at both.
What the Mountain/Southern Sun gets right the others just don't seem to get: just be authentic, unassuming and unpretentious. Be consistent, be friendly, and don't try to upsell or push appetizers or desserts. The Suns hit the mark on quality, and they don't seem to try to do anything more. And why would they, when they're succeeding at what they do best. Â I believe the quality of the beer and food and the friendliness of the staff and commitment of the management team shines through to reflect the spontaneous community ethic advertised in the pub decor homage to touring jam bands like the Grateful Dead (whose following was, by all reports, a friendly and communal atmosphere).
Many restaurant chains and "concepts" try to imitate this subtle feeling through decor and advertising, but they're just imitating. The Suns are the authentic item, the real deal.
5 stars for the beer: easily the best beers I've had at any microbrewery in the State of Colorado; far surpassing those of any brewery in the Boulder area. The waitstaff have been, in my experience, extremely knowledgeable and helpful when it comes to picking out the right beer to suit my tastes for the evening. They know a lot about what's on tap, and how it compares to beers of similar class made by other breweries small and large. Â Beer is a fine art at the Mountain Sun! Â It's worth your time and liver to sample as many as you can.
5 stars for the nachos: served piping hot with real cheese, whole black beans and excellent salsa. Â A whole order is a perfect filling split between 4 when paired with a pitcher.
4 stars overall for the food: it's very consistent and always good. Â It's so much better than any other pub fare in Boulder. Â Places like the Walnut Brewery try to be "classier" but end up falling on their faces when it comes to consistency. Conner O'Neil's tries to have that Irish Pub atmosphere but feels fake and the food is rarely of the caliber to stand up to their standard imported beers. Â The Suns have figured out how to make consistently good food and are sticking with it. I recommend coming in for the specials, such as fish&chips night.
3 stars for the atmosphere -- pure Boulder -- crowded, noisy, and people hanging around for a long time over books and games. Â The interior hand-painted and hand-chalked art is wonderful in a summer concert jam band traveler sort of way. Â People who frequent the Suns are friendly types, usually kind and polite, not jostling and rude and creepy as it can be at similarly crowded places (The Med). Â While it's loud, it's not frat-boy loud nor sports-bar loud --it's just loud because everyone is conversing and trying to hear/be heard. And I'm really glad there are no TVs. Whoever needs an electronic feed should seek elsewhere. Again, the Suns focus on doing what they do best, not trying to be like everyone else.
3 stars for the service: I've been coming to the Mountain Sun at odd intervals throughout the year for 5 years, and the service is consistently friendly every time. Â It has also recently improved to be more prompt, even during the busy times. Â I do have some friends who've received poor/unfriendly service, however, and due to that simply refuse to join me at the Mountain Sun. This is sad because part of the appeal of the Mountain Sun is that it's a friendly place to hang out with friends and share a pitcher. So, while my experience is always good, I am concerned about my friends. I think this is an area that could still use some investigation, but the improvement in the past year is noteworthy.
Many reviewers complain that the Suns are cash-only. Â I know that there's a very high cost involved with using credit cards at a business--a significant percentage of each transaction. Â Usually, this cost is passed onto the customer in higher prices. I appreciate that the Suns are keeping customer costs down at the expense of a tiny inconvenience. Really folks, is it so hard to stop at your bank's ATM for cash on the way, or to use the ATM in each Sun location?
Issues I had with this place...
1. CASH only. Â This is a large establishment, the fact that they do not allow plastic is incredibly inconvenient.
2. They will not separate the check.
3. This place was jammed packed and our service for a table of 6 adults was not very good. 2 of the people had to wait for 10 minutes for their food while the others were already served.
The food was mediocre, basic brewery food. The beers were the only reason I would ever come back.
On the plus side, they did give free fries to people waiting to be seated in the wait area.
Curse my attempt to be healthy. Do NOT get the wraps here. You will be disappointed.
Food: When something is advertised as a chicken masala wrap, you expect some masala. Not the case here. My wrap was completely dry (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/KPH5CzOEnLejOk-cswJAYA?select=QWQg1E30HeZVvcbr4EgpdQ">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>) and was filled with pretty lame ingredients like lettuce and carrots. Basically, everything that was in the salad in the picture was also inside the wrap. There was absolutely no sauce on it. The salad was also pretty bad as it seemed like it was just slapped together in 2 mins. I sampled some of the fish and chips dish my coworkers had and was pretty upset that I hadn't ordered that (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/KPH5CzOEnLejOk-cswJAYA?select=g3aQhBPgFHRIYVCV8rHjjg">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>). The fish was flaky and fried with a crunchy exterior and moist interior. Still, the wrap is basically inexcusable. I also tried the raspberry wheat beer and couldn't distinguish it one bit from a regular brew.
Service: Pretty good. Some of the waiters here are hot. You may have to wait for a table due to the popularity of this place.
Atmosphere: Boulderesque paintings coat the walls. It definitely looks like someone was on something while working on that. If you get bored you can whip out one of the many board games they store in the restaurant for patron use.
Synopsis: Didn't enjoy the food much, but the beer was decent and the atmosphere great.
I love me beer and the Southern Sun does not disappoint. Â I had the fish and chips special as well and they were quite tasty. Â The service was hit and miss. Â The waitress would come by when everyone had full beers on the table and ask if we would like another. Â Then soon after when the beers were empty she would be nowhere. Â Weird but the beer makes up for it. Â Good styles done right with quality and variation. Â Their IPA was quite good as well as the pale ale. Â The java porter is always a crowd pleaser. Â Just don't add the ground during the boil.
I recommend this joint highly to anyone I know who is visiting Boulder and knows a good beer.
We just moved away and I MISS this place more than anything else.
Favorite Summertime memory: After hiking the Mesa trail from Eldo to Chatauqua, sitting on the patio watching the sun set over the Flatirons, drinking Razzy Wheat, eating corn chips and hummus...hmmmm. hippies and beer and mtns, can't beat it! Â
It doesn't hurt that the EMS is right next door, and it's the heck out of town so you don't have the crowds to deal with.
