    Food OK. Service bad.

I've been here twice. Once during restaurant week and things went well. Good steak. Went for July 4th, and pretty disappointed. Sat on the patio, ordered steamers and  both my friend and I ordered lobsters but didn't want succotash and mashed. Our server said we could have house salads and rice. Place was pretty empty and took 30 minutes for steamers to come out. Then salads came out and my lettuce was wilted and the tomatoes even had sweat on them so I knew they had been sitting there. My lobster came out and it's claw was cracked off but the meat was there. If I was a chef, manager or server I would've been embarrassed to serve that to a customer. The best part was at the end of the meal she tried to charge us $6 each for the salads that came with our meal. I guess this place is hit or miss, but the steamers were great and my steak the first time was good. Just dont expect too much from anyone working there.

I don't enjoy going to bars and having the cover band yell "SOCIAL" as a filler between songs. I'm not 16 anymore and having a SOCIAL ever 3 minutes is wildly unnecessary.

But when there's actual music happening, Speakeasy isn't so bad. It's a typical bar-turned-club-turned-high school dance party...just the thing to ignite my youthful spark...if only for one night. Plus it's nice to hear music that, you know, I actually heard back in the Summer of '69...or at a Party (like it's) 1999.

The location is good and the patio right in downtown is nice but the service is absolutely horrible. Every time I've been there I had to deal with one of their miserable staff members. Their food is mediocre and I will never go back there.

We were here on a Saturday night, when the place basically turns into a club.  There were 2 talentless frat boys on stage...who, it should be noted, were quite entertaining.  Bar service was quick, and even a bartender I remember from 20 years ago that works there.

Absolutely packed, so if you need your personal space, this wouldn't be for you.

Horrible service.  Waited a long time for food longer for our drinks.  Then after that got chased down the street by an employee acusing  us of walking out without paying because the server that waited on us couldn't find a charge slip that was under a napkin on the table. After being humiliated you would think a manger would have apologized.  Obviously there is no management.  Never would step foot in that establishment again.

Went here by chance during restaurant week. One of us ended up doing the deal and the other ended up just ordering off the menu. Although there were three folks that came to our table...all were very friendly and very helpful. The last was our waitress and server and she was really friendly and offered a lot of opinions on the best items on the menu. Food was amazing and the service was just as good if not better. Great place to eat or drink.

Went here the other night as part of restaurant week in Newps.....this place is offically legit.  I've drank in here like 50 times but never eaten there until now.

At the panko swordfish and it was the best piece of swordfish I've had on the island.  Boom.  easy call try this place.

I'm quite surprised about the negative  reviews. I spend my summers in Newport and this has quickly become a favorite place for those who frequent there.

The food is great. Some items are better than others. I'm not the biggest fan of carbs, but you MUST try the mac and cheese with chorizo. It is literally the best I've ever tried. The calamari is very unusual but great and I love the homemade potato chips. The entrees are all great too.

But what has made this place really popular is all the people behind the bar. The friendliest guys you'll ever meet and really give you that "Cheers" sort of feel. I've never had a bad time here and have frequently had a great time when I least expected it.

I went here on a very crowded Friday night with my buddy Isaac.  The drinks were great, but it was seriously crammed in there.  Also, the design of the bar is strange in relation to where their live band performs and the door.  I did like the band though, and though they were worth the experience.

Went here for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon...one patron at the bar, one occupied table outside...Benjamin's next door was packed so that should have sent up warning flags. Nevertheless, we sat ourselves at the bar as there was no hostess...placed an order for some oysters and iced tea...ten minutes later I had to flag the inattentive bartender to place our food order (oysters had not come yet)..ordered a salad, mac and cheese and fish tacos...salad came with the oysters(which were very good) and salad was all spinach with very little else, raspberry vinagrette was simply oil, not a hint of raspberry anywhere..,fish tacos were ok, mac and cheese looked as if it was reheated...bartender never came back once to check on us to see how food was and if we needed anything else...he was apparently busy eating, texting and giving out free shots to friends who walked in...cannot recommend this place at all!

This was not our best meal in Newport, very good fish chowder, but otherwise unspectacular & the beef entree was subpar. The previous restaurant at this location - the Quahog Company was much nicer... Oh well.

Went in for a quick lunch.  The food was great and reasonably priced.  The waiting staff was attentive and friendly.  Next time I'm in town, I will be sure to stop by for another visit.

It's ok. Had a few beers - semi flat, not all that amazing. The lighting is kinda weird - really dark and cavernous. Didn't eat any food. Bartender was nice, but hostess reprimanded my friend for bringing in a soda from the outside. I get that it's just her job, and maybe her manager was watching her and that she'd maybe get in trouble if she didn't say something... but it kind of put a damper on everything. So we left.

This place isn't all that. The waiter was completely inattentive. I mean didn't bother checking to see if we needed anything after the food was brought. From when we ordered until we got our food we didn't even see him. Um what is that about, you're not that busy & avoiding us isn't the proper thing to do. Out of all the places we could've gone to & stumbled on this one & shouldn't have bothered. Their portions weren't that great. Not anything to write home about, not many veggie options either. Total disappointment, specially considering the amount of money wasted on this place.

Not many choices for a place to eat because it was a busy night all over. Stopped in here and found a table and was a disappointed. The Portuguese mac and cheese sounded great and tasted good but but it was extremely salty and the swordfish sandwich was dried out. The service was good though and they were very nice. It looked more like a bar atmosphere than a place to eat . I'd go back for drinks but not eat.

The Speakeasy is on the top of my list of restaurants in Newport. I have spent the last 10 summers in Newport and eat out frequently on the weekends. Since we discovered the Speakeasy we usually eat there 1 night a weekend. Why do we keep going back? The food is delicious, the waitstaff and bartenders are extremely friendly, and we've made so many good friends from going to the restaurant so we are always welcomed by familiar faces. My favorite app: baked oysters

I am newport local.... I have eaten in nearly every restaurant in town.  Speakeasy is hands down the best food in town for casual fine dining.  Pork chops, sword fish and seared tuna are all awesome.  The kitchen has recently reopened after a six month construction improvement.... i think most of the negative food reviews here were during that period when they were serving a very limited menu.  The chef came from the West Deck restaurant which was widely thought of as one of the best fine dinning places ib newport.  I love their food and eat dinner here twice a week.  One of the best stops on thames st.

Really nice atmosphere. Food has been great when I have been in. Some of my favorites are the baked oysters, filet, rosemary chicken, and the chocolate desert. Mmm...  I am a newport local and would reccomend speakeasy as a good choice.

The staff is amazing - from the hostess to the busboy, to the waitress, to the random servers clearing our plates - just amazing. The prices are so reasonable and the food is great! We happened to wander in here for dinner on Saturday night and got a high top at the bar. As we were finishing up a band was setting up to play!

Ran into this bar after freezing our toes off walking around on a windy Saturday night. We needed a place to warm up - defrost our toes & warm our bodies with some drinks. $10 dirty martinis? I thought I was back in NYC! But the bartender made it well - according to my dirty martini expert friend. According to her, he knew what he was doing and definitely was experienced at making the cocktail. He also gave us a free shot which was nice. The crowd was very random in age range (young college guys to a much older crowd). We left when the band was setting up to continue our Newport bar hopping quest.

While in Newport at he beginning of December i didn't think that there were going to be many people there but this place was packed. it was also a very fun atmosphere. the place itself is very nice and homey feel to it.
Just like many other Newport restaurants the menu is filled with seafood entrees.I had a skirt steak and it was good over cooked to my liking but i was able to switch it with a friend who had her steak under cooked. It might be because we were sitting at the bar or since it was a busy but service was not very good it took a while for the waiter and waitresses to get to us.

Newport in November?  Sure!  The crowds are thinner, but that might mean that you get lucky and arrive during restaurant week.  Yes, I know, many of you give restaurant week all the respect normally given to a watered-down drink (and for roughly the same reasons), but it's not a bad way to get to know a place.

I think the name "Speakeasy Bar and Grill" is intended to evoke a sense of the risk and excitement of the days of prohibition, forbidden pleasures, and all that comes with it.  Unfortunately the effort to create this image stops at the sign on the door, but the food is artfully presented and good enough to earn at least three or maybe four stars.  Dessert was a slight disappointment, so I'm going with three stars.

For my appetizer, I tried the grilled flatbread with prosciutto.  This was ok, but mostly forgettable.  I think I'd try either the fish chowder or clam chowder app next time.

For my entree I had the seared tuna with cucumber slaw, wasabi, and ginger (see photo).  It was well proportioned and carefully arranged on the plate.

Unlike the other reviewers, I found the service to be friendly and as prompt as I wanted it to be.  All in all, a good spot that I may return to, but not before trying out many of the other excellent destinations that Newport has to offer.

Good friendly service, terrible food. Weak apps. Native Lobster and portobello pizza was a cracker crust with no sign of portobellos and a scant three pieces of rubbery lobster. Just overall disappointment with the kitchen. Two stars for great location and attentive staff

1 star.. order drinks here. DO NOT EAT HERE! - even the waitress admitted they shouldn't be serving food here. The kitchen is dirty, the bathroom is dirty, and even the glasses and plates they brought to the table were greasy and dirty. our one meal came with black flecks floating in the water, a dirty wine glass, a greasy cheese plate, and a corned beef sandwich that was wet, greasy, and tasted off. To the waitresses' credit, she took the corned beef sandwich off the bill. Stop here for bottled drinks if you find it convenient, but leave before you get buzzed and hungry.

    Absolutely atrocious.

We arrived near the end of the first quarter of the Patriots game and were told we could put our name on a list for a table while we had a drink. After watching two high-top tables be taken by people who had arrived after us but not seated by the hostess, we asked if those tables were first come, first serve. We were told that they weren't, but that we were the only ones waiting.

Eventually we were seated, and about fifteen minutes after we were seated, the hostess came to fill our water glasses and said that she wasn't our server, Dan was. After another fifteen minutes she said, "Has Dan come by yet?" He hadn't, so she said she would send him right over.

When he came by, he took our beer and food order - the beers took about 10-15 minutes to arrive. As we waited for the food, halftime came, and halftime went. By the way, our food order was chips and salsa, and fondue. As we waited, we saw our server hanging out behind the bar, in other parts of the dining room, and in the back by the kitchen, doing anything but working.

After 30-40 minutes, we decided to leave - 10 bucks for the two beers, and we won't be back.

I sat out front and my waitress may have had other things on her mind. She definitely was distracted and forgot to bring 3 things to the table through out the meal.

The clam chowder was watery {if you're into that] and I can't remember the rest of my meal. I just wanted to settled up and move to the bar.

The bartender redeemed that place. Quick with refills, very attentive. It would've been 2 stars if it wasn't for him.

This place was meh.  I completely disagree with the $$ rating on here, which played a big part in our choosing this restaurant for dinner.  With most of the entrees in the $20+ range, I'd be more inclided to give this a $$$ price rating.

The atmosphere was nice - dark decor and black table cloths.  We were there on Saturday night, which was relatively hot and humid, so we were a little bit uncomfortable when we sat at our table after walking around outside most of the day.  They had opted for the al fresco climate control method that evening and had the whole front of the restaurant open.  I personally felt it was a bit too sticky out for that, but once I sat down and stopped moving it did get a little bit better.

Service was decent.  She didn't seem super welcoming or accommodating... she just kind of did what she needed to do with friendly enough disposition, but she just didn't come across as particularly cheerful to me.

Food was good.  I'd say the appetizers stole the show, actually.  We split the Portuguese mac n' cheese with chourico, and I enjoyed 2 chilled oysters while the boyfriend made gross faces at me.  For our meal, he ordered a burger, which he ordered medium, but it came out definitely more on the rare side.  Rare is for really good steak., not for burgers.  He said it was otherwise decent.  I got the lobster gnocchi, which was also decent.  There was a good sized hunk of tail meat on top of tomato cream sauced gnocchi, all garnished with some yummy strings of yellow and green squash.  The lobster and squash parts were good, but the gnocchi was just okay.  A few of them seemed to have an odd rubbery texture, which I wasn't a fan of.

In fairness, I think our experience may have been tainted a little bit by the couple next to us, who had decided to bring their two very young and very loud children to a nice dining establishment and let them sit next to each other so they could beat each other up and scream the whole time... all while they ignored them and continued chatting away with the other (offspring-less) couple with them, who were likely thinking to themselves "Oh no... they brought their little screaming demons with them!"  Take note: this definitely isn't the type of restaurant to bring the little ones to, folks!

Overall, it was a nice (albeit warm) place with decent food... but I'll probably be dining elsewhere the next time I'm in the area.

When my wife & I found out where the previous owners of the West Deck Restaurant had moved to, we were anxious to experience their new restaurant. As I expected, the food was INCREDIBLE. We shared the
calarmi appetizer which by the way, a few years back,  was featured in the Providence news paper. As for the meals, the encrusted sword fish doesn't get any better and the filet mignon was as good as it gets.

We had a great meal at The Speakeasy.  I had the filet mignon, and my friends had the shrimp and clam scampi and the pan roasted chicken.  We all really enjoyed our food, especially the appetizer special, the fresh potato chips with black bean dip and sour cream and cilantro dip!  I hope they put them on their permanent menu.  The only disappointment was they did not have a martini/specialty drink menu.  As a side note, the Speakeasy is owned by the same people who own Pour Judgement, which is also delicious, but I like Speakeasy's location and set up better!

Not bad! I've heard this place is pretty new, and it seems like they have their act together. I went to Speakeasy last Friday for dinner with three friends, and everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. They have an interesting beer selection (yay!) and a great outdoor terrace area. They also have these AWESOME fresh potato chips that come with a sour cream dip & a bean dip... sooooo delicious! The service was great, especially compared to what I experienced elsewhere in Newport. I definitely recommend this place!
