Last night was my first time here, and this place is great! My friend and I were looking for a place to sit outside with our dogs, and Speakeasy is the perfect location. They have a few outdoor tables right out front. Our waitress was very nice and gave us recommendations and opinions about the food. We started off with blueberry beers, which were delicious. For appetizers we got the cheese plate, some type of wedge potatoes/fries, and the butter lettuce salad. All were good starters and decently priced for their size. My friend got the veggie taco trio and she enjoyed it. For my main meal, the waitress recommended the Croque Madame. Its basically a really good ham and cheese sandwich, grilled panini style, with a liquid-y cream cheese sauce and topped off with a sunny side up egg. To die for. Probably not the healthiest thing on the menu, but its worth the calorie splurge. Will definitely be returning soon!

ok, the food is probably about a 4, but the service and casual setting can't be beat! Try the fried chicken and waffle  with strawberry compote combo. Amazing. Great local beer selection too.

Good service and food, and the beer was alright. This is definitely the kind of place to chill with your friends and enjoy the crowd outside...

Amazing food and service. Excellent value for such a fantastic meal.
    We had:
    truffle deviled eggs-delish
crab cakes-very fresh, lightly breaded and seasoned perfectly
skirt steak-this was incredible. I'm not even a red meat person. Paired with asparagus and a puff pastry.
lobster mac and cheese-ultimate comfort food

What are you waiting for? Go here. It's that good. One of these days I am going to venture away from the veggie taco trio. Fried plantain, tempeh and pulled jackfruit? Yes, please. All 3 are ingredients that can easily be messed up in a kitchen. Speakeasy has perfected each of them.

I have ventured outside of the tacos, just not as my main course. Everything I've tried is inventive, flavorful and ultimately comforting.

Bonus points for the gourmet menu without pretentious side effects from the folks that run the place. Score!

Wondering why the 4 stars instead of 5? Bring back the bourbon cheesecake! Wine list could use a greater mix - in price and varietals. And I'd love to see more cider options on tap outside of the Ace Pear...

Edamame hummus, tacos, jalapeño poppers, bread pudding...Mmmmm. Get after it!

    Speakeasy is now serving brunch!

Four of us went to try Speakeasy's new brunch so we could get a taste of everything, and I can report back that everything is as to be expected - INCREDIBLE.

    We had:

    1) Maple Bacon Donut Holes!!!  Don't bother...just stop...don't even tell me 'I don't like donuts' or 'bacon on donuts?...ewww' or 'I'm on a diet, I can't.'  Just order them.  I know my bacon and I know my donuts and will never have either again anywhere, in combination or as separates without thinking about these awesome donut holes. (I likely won't ever have brunch again without thinking about these awesome donut holes.   Did I mention they have bacon on them?)

2)Buttermilk biscuits and homemade sausage gravy with two sunny side up farm eggs.
-I am a HUGE fan of biscuits and gravy, even when it is thick and gummy as paste and gives you a mini heart attack with each bite.  I always order it as a test of a breakfast place's meddle.  oh baby are Speakeasy's spectacular!  I recommend you get this even if you don't normally like biscuits and gravy.  This is on a whole other level.    It retains enough of the hearty flavor that is required from a biscuits and gravy dish but has an incredible grace that is hard to describe.  Comparing this to your standard biscuits and gravy is like comparing a mixed martial artist with a big dumb thug.  The thug will get the job done, but will leave you feeling like he forced you to eat a bowling ball, where as the mixed martial artists, with finesse, class, artistry, strategy, intelligence, and sophistication, will leave you feeling like you did your part, and will congraduate you afterwards for putting up a good fight.  This biscuits and gravy will lull you in because you think you have seen (and tasted) it all before.  But like the mixed martial artist, it will put you under its spell with the artistry of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Krav Maga before submitting you with Kimura, Omoplata, or a straight up Rear Nake Choke.  You won't even know what hit you, but after it is all said and done, you will feel like you were part of something special, not just the victim of what showed up on the plate in front of you.

    3) Baked eggs with chevre, parmesan, crumbled bacon and fingerling potatoes.
-I had never had baked eggs before but am now a huge fan.  I'm thinking of moving my egg cooking from the cast iron pan on the stove top into the oven to see if I can try to replicate Speakeasy's flavor and texture.

    4) Smoked salmon toast with avocado, tarragon creme fraiche and two 5 minute eggs.
-There are a lot of words in that description that I don't know...but I suspect some of them are French...but I won't hold that against them...this time.  As a native of the area I'm grew up on salmon.  Although not a huge fan of fish, I try not to pass up on smoked salmon and boy am I glad I followed that habit here.  This dish has such a wonderful combination of flavors...which is saying a lot considering I am not normally a fan of avocado.  But as with everything I have tried already at Speakeasy, I have learned that no matter what ingredient I may not be fond of, if Speakeasy puts it in there, I'm not going to question it or shove it aside until I have tried it.  So far, the plates have all been licked clean.

    5) Savory brie popover with pear, apple citrus salad
    - I don't know what this is...but know that we liked it so much we ordered a second one.  'Nuf said.

I have posted a few pictures.  These are admittedly stolen from Speakeasy's Facebook page because our brunch plates were cleaned off before I even thought of snapping any pics.  (I highly recommend 'like'ing their Facebook page - they post great pics and special events that you might miss otherwise.)

The food easily gets 5 stars. The chef deserves a toast.
    We had the
    1) Jalapeno firecrackers - Extremely hot....I have no idea how anyone can call these bland
    2) Pork medallions - Really incredible sauce
    3) Skirt steak - husband got the chimichurri on this rather than the wine sauce that was on the menu. The chimichurri was phenomenal and the steak was perfectly done
    4) Lobster Mac N Cheese- Incredibly rich and great comfort food.

The lost star is solely due to the service. The Mac N Cheese was forgotten, so it was a wait to get it. Then there was only one server on shift and a full house, so the service was incredibly slow and inattentive. I think that if they want to stay competitive they need to put another waitperson on dinner shifts.

How do I count the ways????  This place is my new go to!  They have amazing beer, a fantastic staff and veggie and vegan items on this insane menu.  Sit outside and take in the sites....great people watching in this little niche.  The tacos are fantastic, I have them make mine all salmon, asparagus soup is yummy (yummy....like I wanted to lick the bowl) and the miso cashew tahini burger blew away my meat eating guy!

The bar is also cozy and everyone is super nice.

Amazing menu and food that is prepared with the best ingredients and delicate touch. Everything is used to make the main ingredient standout and flavors really work well together. Awesome beer selection and open til 2:00 am. I can see this place be THE SPOT late downtown Petaluma and we will be back for sure!

Had the best dinner at Speakeasy last night. Everyone at the table agreed it was a landmark meal. We started with the Asparagus Soup, tried the squash and goat cheese panini, Lobster Mac and Cheese, and had the Wild Salmon for entree. Every bite was fantastic. The service could not have been better. LOVE THIS PLACE. This is the fourth time we've eaten here and each time it's been fantastic. Their trio of tacos is also not to be missed.

I really wanted to LOVE this place since it's location is so great and I have heard and read good things about it but I am a little puzzled about the fanfare.

The service is great, our waitress was nice and informative but the food is just, well, bland.  I don't know how Lobster Mac & Cheese can be bland, but it was.  There were 2 pieces of lobster in it and it just didn't taste like lobster.  The cheese they used was flavorless too which is really puzzling because the Petaluma area has some pretty world-class cheese makers if you ask me.  I also had the jalapeno firecrackers and they too, were bland.  They looked great, the plating all around is great, but that's it.  All show and no substance.

The prices at first glance of the menu seem pretty good but when you see the portions it then seems really expensive as they're very, very small.  Some of the smallest portions I've ever seen.  It was kind of a joke.

    I don't think I'll be going back.

Love this place. Owners are fantastic. Working in a restaurant, I am off work late, so their late hours are a huge plus for me. Favorite dishes are the burger, edemame hummus, and the pork belly.

We had a great meal at Speakeasy!  Super cute place, and all the food we had was awesome & incredibly reasonably priced

Edamame Hummus - very flavorful, pumpernickle toast
Jalapeno poppers - two were pretty mild and one was HOT, kind of like russian roulette :) the avocado cream was a perfect way to keep the heat down
Burger - good quality meat, very juicy
Lobster Mac & Cheese - OH YEAH - super creamy, perfect hint of bacon, and lots of lobster pieces
Bread Pudding - toffee flavored & a perfect way to end the meal

    Absolutely wonderful!

Rolled into Speakeasy last night 'round 11. Ordered a burger cooked rare and a glass of Sav Blanc to wash it down (I know white's an offbeat choice with red meat, but it felt right). Roger, the proprietor, was all smiles and charm as usual. Asked the chef for some mayo for the fries, and he slid over chipotle-infused. Delightful!
Don't tell your friends about this place; it already has the perfect crowd.

This just became our "place to go", especially late night...open til 2am every night! We've been there twice now for the lobster mac and cheese, and the taco trio. Beer, wine, tea - all good.

We also ordered a bunch of food on our first visit - all fantastic.

As we planned to dine at another nearby place, a litle bird put the name Speakasy in our ears... Finding the first place and not being impressed we began the trek of finding the Speakeasy.  Must have walked by it 4 times as we marched up and down the alley and main streets.  I kept saying, it should be right here...  The last pass a sign came on "OPEN | SPEAKEASY". Just opening, the nice manager let us come in early, got seats for us and we ordered that first thing we saw -- Asparagus Soup. Ideal for a cold day.  The soup was incredible.  Creamy, tasty, fresh.  SOLD. So good we stayed for the Crab Citrus salad, and Spring Rissotto dish.  Exceptional quality, presentation and most important delicious food.  The chef works magic.  Wonderful wine selections.  Small, cozy, European feel cafe with a very friendly, easy, knowledgeable staff.  We were thrilled to have found this place and it is on the list of returns!!!  Give it a try, you will NOT be disappointed.

Finally, a great restaurant in a location that was problematic in the past, from Thai to pizzas.  I don't give five star ratings lightly, but this was a great dining experience.  It is a tiny space, with limited seating inside so you have to plan carefully.  Our group of 9 had a fantastic experience with a plethora of dishes, from salads, soups, escargot to mac and cheese with lobster (yes you heard that correctly) plus a wide range of desserts.  Choice of beverages ranges from Bella wine to Anchor Steam beer.  Waitstaff (ours was Jessica) were right on it.  Portions are modest, but enough to satisfy.  Each item sampled was special, and with an expansive menu it needs to be revisited in the future.

I had dinner and beers at Speakeasy this past Tuesday night. It is tucked away in the downtown square across from Petaluma Pie Company, it's easy to miss because its very small and they do not yet have a large sign. I had the pleasure of meeting both of the owners, Amber and Roger, who were very accommodating and both had a deep understanding of their menu and have an appreciation for the town of Petaluma (all nine beers they have on tap are craft local brews). Roger built the beautiful bar out of rare redwood and granite and he decorated the walls with very cool mystique photos of family, contributing to the relaxing feel of the place. I found myself constantly admiring the neat and tasteful decorations (old school cash register, beautifully embellished mirror behind the bar, neat stained glass window between the bar and kitchen).

They serve primarily tapas (small plates). I split four of them between myself and my girlfriend and they were all very tasty, unique, and crafted with care. Great beer selections as well.

This bar is open until 2am EVERY DAY, which makes it a perfect random stop for a quick bite and a drink at any hour of the night or day. They also have ample outdoor seating which is going to be awesome come the summer time. In the mean time, they have large fire-lit outdoor heating elements to keep you toasty during the cool winter nights in Petaluma.

Finally a place to get food in Petaluma after 10pm, and they're open until 2am!

The owners and staff have been very friendly and pleasant every time I've been in.

I had a burger and it was wonderful, yummy and just enough food to make me happy but not leave me feeling bloated for eating the whole thing.

    Good beer and wine selection.

I had really yummy soup here too.

The food is fantastic! So far I have tried the butternut squash risotto, taco trio, apple parsnip soup, lobster mac and cheese, pear and beet salad, crab and mango salad, jalapeno poppers, (uuh. in many trips) and ALL is really good with the exception of the jalepeno poppers which were not that great. BUTTERNUT SQUASH RISOTTO IS MY FAVE!

Great local (some not) beers on tap, 101 North Brewing Heroine IPA is my fave, wine and also excellent deserts. We tried the Bullet Bourbon Cheesecake and chocolate bread pudding...which were delish!!!

I appreciate the portion size / tapas style...you can order 2 things to yourself or 2 people can share 3 (or 4 if your hungry) and the prices are very reasonable for the quality.

It's a small place but it has such a unique and inviting feel...and not the greatest for families and babies however we've brought our 6 mo. old a couple times right after they open (before it gets too busy) and it was fine and they're very kind and accommodating to us.

I'm disappointed after that meal. For the price point, each dish was very bland and over priced. Presentation tricked us into believing we were going to get something better than expected.

    - Jalapeno popers is a shared dish?!?! there are only 2.... how is that shared....
    - Vegetarian tacos.... meh. Not that impressive. They just reused the same sauce that was boring.
    - Chicken wings were good, not as spicy as they should be.
    - Apple cream sop: didn't wow me. just allll cream and butter.
+ Lobster mac and cheese. ONLY good thing that was good, but how can you screw that up? Its got a buncha butter, cream, cheese.

All in all, they think they are better quality than they are. I tried to convince myself to love it, but it just didnt happen. And for a $80 bill for 3 people??? Common. There are better places to eat in the area.

    So far, so great!

I have only been once so far, but my experience was phenomenal. I started with a tasty Anchor Steam Christmas Beer, which i was very happy to learn they had on tap. Then I had their soup du jour, which was an apple parsnip soup. It was so warm and flavorful. The perfect soup for a cold winter evening. Then, although there were so many tempting options on the menu, I decided on the Lobster Mac & Cheese....because who can turn down two of my favorite meal options, together in one gooey dish with a bit of truffle oil.

I was very happy with my food and beer, and the cozy atmosphere was perfect for my date night. I think you can tell from my review, that I think the Speakeasy is a very welcome addition to downtown Petaluma.

The owner, was very personable and gave us the low down on the specials, and i was also very impressed with the vegetarian options. I will definitely be going back to Speakeasy and recommending it to my friends.

The food is fantastic and the beer selection is good. Service is friendly and prompt. As sad as I was to see that my favorite Thai restaurant had ceased to be, I was thrilled to find that the food at Speakeasy is at least as good (and most likely, better). We had the Edamame hummus (holy crap! the pumpernickel crostini was SO SO good -- I would eat that for DAYS), jalapeno firecrackers (delicious!), and I had the veggie burger of the day -- I have no clue what it was, but it was AMAZING. My only complain would be the price/amt. of food ratio, but that's to be expected of tapas AND of Sonoma county. I'll definitely be back next time I'm home for the holidays.

First off - the food is delicious and I hate writing this but I would like to be the only person this happens to so hopefully Speakeasy is listening.

They do not know how to handle food allergies. Their gluten-free claim and good reviews are what attracted me to the restaurant since I have Celiac disease and eating gluten will make me sick for at least a week. So, I order and speak to the waiter and the manager to let them both know about my allergy and they say "no problem". They both confer with one another and the chef to let them know how to prepare my food.  They got it wrong and only found out after I'd eaten a full taco made with a flour shell (I had to point out that it seemed weird - they didn't check before serving it since both flour and corn tortillas are served).

So, off to the bathroom I go to force myself to barf it all up and then they have the gall to ask my husband to pay his half. They poisoned me!

Again, great food - incompetent staff. I am writing this review in an effort to give them feedback because their food is fantastic but it is a liability if it could put people in the hospital. Perhaps it would be better if they didn't claim to be allergy-sensitive until they get these types of issues under control. Had they double-checked, this would have been a 5-star review.

We are so thrilled to have found this place! I had seen their website before visiting and was so happy to see that someone in the area is finally doing a Jackfruit taco! This vegetarian specialty is hard to come by and they did it perfectly.

We stopped by on an impulse on New Years day (I had forgotten about it until a passerby mentioned they were open.) We had our 2 year old with us so I was a little worried how we would be treated as I knew this wasn't necessarily a "family"restaurant. They were really sweet to us and never made us feel uncomfortable  about having our kid in their restaurant/bar.  As a side note to parents, they don't have any child's seating.

Our waitress was very kind and accommodating with our many questions and specific requests (my husband is vegan, I am vegetarian and we had a toddler with us.) They even went so far as to come back after we ordered to make sure I wasn't vegan as well so that all food was prepared properly. Thumbs up!

All of the food was superb. My son loved the edamame hummus with spiced toast and so did I. My husband LOVED the vegetarian taco trio and we will definitely come back just for that. My butternut squash risotto was cooked perfectly and the toasted almonds added a lovely crunch. I also liked that they offer half pints of their beers and ciders, just the perfect amount for tasting.

All around we had a wonderful experience, but next time we will leave the little one at home!

we had the short ribs and polenta, and lobster mac and cheese, desert , salad, rissoto.  all amazing.  the lobster mac and cheese had enough calories for two days, i let my husband eat most of that..

Let me begin by saying do not the look fool you, this is high end food at a small cozy place.

The service is amazing and excellent, and the personality of the place is just amazing.

I had the special African stew. It was well seasoned, the right amount if heat, just Spicy enough for a kick but doesn't overwhelm the skilled seasonings. Be sure to eat it with the flatbread, the almost sweet aspect of the bread pairs perfectly with the spicy stew.

I also tried the butternut squash risotto, which was excellent. Perfect cooked risotto and the flavorings were complex but perfectly intermingled. This is on the regular menu and I recommend not passing this up.

I have a new favorite place for amazing food

I work right across the way and for some reason never stopped by! What a mistake, my dad and I went came here in the spur of the moment. It was so good! We got the butternut squash soup, spare ribs, chicken wings, and the lobster mac! Mmm mmm mmm! Butternut squash soup was so creamy, rich, and delicious and the fried sage on top made it just pop even more.  Great starting dish. The sweet and spicy chicken  wings were so perfect, I am very picky about my wings and these were just the perfect amount of sweet and spicy sauce well dressed on a crispy fried chicken wing. The Short ribs oh my gosh...tender, fall off the bone, full of flavor, pure yum! Lobster mac was creamy and delicious love the lobster and bacon together with the crunchy breadcrumbs on top. I want more now! I have been looking for a good tapas place forever and I honestly just thought this place was a bar. I will have to keep myself from eating here all the time now since I stare at the building at work.
I really thought this place deserved a great review, I don't know what they do back there but I left full and happy!

So much awesomeness in one place, I can hardly stand it! Really.

Where to start? First of all, I've known one of the owners (Roger) a long time, so you can imagine how excited I was to learn that he and his lovely girlfriend opened a little eatery in town (where Thai Ginger used to be)! Couldn't wait to see how it was, and it did NOT disappoint.

The food was crafted with such a relaxed artistry, and the mingle of flavors deliberately seduced the taste buds in ways that made you contemplate for a brief moment before letting the Chef's creativity really sink in... before showing absolute gratitude in your expression. Every single dish at the table was pleasing.

My fare, the house made veggie burger and edamame hummus with pumpernickel: exquisite. The spicy ketchup they served with my three steak fries: delish! I couldn't believe how perfect my burger was. It was smoky and burger-y! Heaven in a bun. My only teeny tiny complaint would be that it was served in a potato bun when I asked for the local focaccia from Bovine Bakery. Still, absolutely thrilled with the service (Fraser, who also works locally at Dempsey's, has to be one of my favorite waiters in town) and the cool vintage atmosphere and the vast array of eclectic menu offerings cooked to perfection.

The rest of the table tried the lobster mac 'n cheese (loved it!), the butternut squash soup (yum!), the crab salad (curried goodness!), and the taco trio (chicken, pork and salmon!).  Everyone was happy as can be with their choices... we also did dessert.  SHEER PERFECTION!  Bravo to Speakeasy and to Roger and Amber and the amazing creative Chef able to pull off things you might not have ever thought to put together.

There are so many plates I want to try there, and since the other owner is a vegetarian, the mix of meat and veggie options is well balanced. Not the typical ONE veggie option on the entire menu making you feel a bit alien. Thankful they are there and hope they stay!!

One more thing, they are open daily from 5pm to 2am. A rare and daring offering in the north bay! Spread the word!! Make the trip late at night when those hunger pangs creep up on ya. You will not be displeased! Trust me. ;-)

    It good.

It was a late rainy night. The skies were pouring and we were out of gas. The target restaurant was closed. After traveling all night, we were dying for food. The only respite to be had was a warm fire in front of Speakeasy.

    We took the bait.

The risotto, squash goat cheese panini, and pork belly hit the spot. Satisfied. You should get the same.

Petalumans who eat out weekly here in town- We have our favorites but after eating here.....
You know when you go somewhere new to eat and you compare the new place to one of your favorites? Well this quickly became one of our favorites.
Smell was exotic searing when we arrived with soft jazz in the background- Menu was simple and easy and they had my favorite Lagunitas so that added a star right there. Cozy- simple-
I had seen others postings on facebook and wanted to try- We are going back tonight- we do not do that often. The three of us shared 5 plates and we were even trying to pick on something- like, well I would do this different or that but we did'nt find anything. We had called and got reservations from Amber? I think- we got there at 7 and I can see how this could become a regular stop again and again- They are open late- My only regret is we were too full for desert- so we are plannig accordingly tonight!
Croque Madame was my wifes favorite I think- my daughter like the Pork belly on the rice- she asked me how we could make rice that good at home- I could'nt answer that one- I told our server I think they made one mistake-
Should have opened a bigger restaurant because I can see where, once discovered, you will have to get reservations in order to eat- for now we are just happy to see a great restaurant open in town and I think they are a "Keeper"!

A very lovely place in downtown Petaluma.  The service was great, the owners are very friendly.  The star of this show, however, is the chef.  The food was awesome.  I really enjoyed the Lobster Mac 'n Cheese and the crab-cakes.  They had a delicious puree of celery root and cauliflower which was fantastic with the crab.  Also, have to point out that the lemon trifle was smashing.

It will be very interesting to see how these folks do in Petaluma since they are trying something new: open 'till 2:00 am.  I can't imagine that would be profitable.  But, I am glad they are giving it a shot and I wish them the best.

    We will be back!

    It's about time.

They have a badass chef who takes his food very seriously, it's affordable (though not cheap), and they serve a full menu seven days a week until 2am(!). It's almost enough to make you forget you aren't in the city.

The best parts: the patio and the burger. Omfg, the burger. Get one.
